AE wireless works- but can't connect to configure

I'm trying to configure my AE over wireless. It will allow me to connect to it, and I can browse the internet without a problem. But when I try to connect to it in the Airport Utility (which does find it) it pops up a dialog that says "Detecting wireless devices" which last a lot longer than it should, then ends up with an error dialog "Unable to connect to wireless device, error -4".
I've tried hard and soft resets with no effect. What's going on here?

I've tried hard and soft resets with no effect. What's going on here?
A "hard reset" will not always clear out all the stored configuration settings and get the AirPort Express back to original factory defaults.
Suggest that you try a Factory Default Reset as follows:
o Power down the AirPort Express for 5-10 minutes
o Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in while you now plug the Express back in to power
o Keep holding the reset button until the amber light begins to blink more quickly and hold another 3-4 seconds when you see this
o Release the reset button and the AirPort Express will restart in 40-45 seconds with a slow blinking amber light
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times without success, it is unfortunately likely that the firmware has become corrupted and the device will need to be replaced.

  • I can VPN into my work but can't connect to any devices inside that network

I authenticate fine and get an address but I cant connect to any devices inside my work.  I am connecting to Cisco Lan controllers, routers, and switches.
I thought it was a routing problem but I can connect with my iphone and open the webpage for my lan controllers and I even tested it on a pc laptop with Windows XP and it works fine.  I have a 2012 Macbook pro.  I prefer to use my Macbook all the time.  I haven't used my Windows laptop until today since I got the Mac.  Do you think I have the V-Word?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Airport is connected to my wireless network, but can't connect to internet

I'm a first time mac user. Earlier today our power went out, and when it came back on, our wireless router reset. We currently have 4 computers that we connect to the internet; 2 of them are Macs, 2 of them are PCS. Both of the PCs are connected to the internet with no problems, but both of the macs refuse. I've run diagnostics on both computers, and it says it can't find an error. I've contacted my provider, and my internet service is not the problem.
It keeps saying that AirPort is connected to the wireless router (my wireless router), but cannot connect to the internet. I've been trying to fix this for over 3 hours now. I work nights, and need my computers for work, so as it sands i'm currently losing money over this Can anyone help please?

    Welcome!
Can you clarify what model iMacs you have? This forum is for the older G4 iMAcs with the articulated monitor and a hemispherical base. However, due to poor forum labeling, many people with newer iMacs are lured to this area. Reset procedures may vary with model so it's important we know which variant you have. Use "About the Mac" in the Apple menu to find your processor type--that should be enough for now.
Once you you figure out the processor type, append it to the equipment info in you profile, Example: it now says "iMac." If you find yours has a G5 processor, change it to read "iMac G5." That will save you a lot of keystrokes down the road.

  • Can See Wireless Network, But Can't Connect

I am able to see the linksys wireless network under my wireless options, but when I try to connect, it says there was an error joining the network. I have been able to connect before with no problem. Two other wireless enabled computers in my house are able to connect to the network, but not mine. If I plug into the ethernet port on the wireless router, I can get internet. I've already tried the instructions from the "Getting Association (signal strength), but no Internet access" article, but nothing changed. Also I've upgraded the firmware and restarted both the router and my computer, but nothing helped. I don't know of anything that I did to my computer from the day it was working to the day to the day it stop working. I have Mac OS 10.4 fyi. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is it my computer that is the problem or the router?

After you upgrade the firmware in the router, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Also, in the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall, and see it this helps.

  • Airport card working but can't connect to internet

    hi all,
airport card (just plain airport card) is working and is connected to a verizon fios router. signal very strong. just can't connect to internet via safari, camino or firefox. running 10.3.9 os. i've rebooted twice to no avail.
altho, i can connect on my g4 powerbook using the same router.
why isn't the g4 flat panel imac connecting? any ideas?

In the Network system preference panel, is the wireless component
selected and in the list of items in the configuration the Mac sees?
You can drag the item(s) into preferred order of use, if there is more
than one, ie: dialup modem, ethernet connection, airport base.
If both computers have a similar operating system, it may be an
idea to look carefully into each, and not change anything in the
one which appears to work correctly; to look for differences.
Does the wireless router provide support for 802.11/b as well
as wi-fi 802.11/g? The older airport card runs on the older spec.

  • MacBook can see wireless network, but can't connect; no error message

This one has got me stumped: my father has a new D-Link wireless router. His Windows laptop connects to it just fine, but neither of our Apple laptops (an old PowerBook G4 and a brand new MacBook Pro) will connect to it. The network does appear in the Airport menu, but when I select it, nothing happens. It pauses for a second, and then I'm left disconnected from all wireless networks. No error message, no connection, no check appears next to the network's name. No security of any kind is enabled, and I've turned off "n" support on the router. I'm at a loss, and can't seem to find anyone with similar problems. Any ideas?
The console gives me the following:

I've tried that (every time I've changed the D-link settings, and seperately). No dice,

  • Airport is on and working, but can't connect to internet with MacBook

I have a green light on my airport Extreme, my laptop can join my network fine and get 4 bars of connectivity.
But I cannot get on the internet with my laptop. Websites don't work.
    What am I doing wrong?

Were you able to copy the DNS addresses to the MacBook? Were you able to delete the incorrect ones? Did you restart the MacBook before trying to access the Internet again?
How about the IP address for the MacBook? It should be in the address range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200. Is it? Of course I'm assuming that you did not change the default DHCP range of your AEBSn. Your iMac should also be assigned an IP in this range.

  • Wireless working, but devices cannot connect

Just recently, my FIOS wireless router started acting up. Regardless of what Wi-Fi enabled device I use (laptop, phone, etc.), sometimes the devices cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. When this happens, I would have to turn off and turn on the laptop's or phone's Wi-Fi and it will immediately work. This only happens on all my wireless devices because anything connected to the router via cable does not experience this issue. Anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Sound like you're possibly having a radio signal problem.  Did you possibly just acquire a new wireless phone?
Try logging on to the router and select the wireless tab and change the channel your router is broadcasting on.

  • IPod touch recognizes Wireless Router, But Can't Connect To Internet.

    Hello everyone,
My iPod Touch 3rd Gen 3.1.2 recognizes the router and connects to it, but no WiFi meter is showing (the one at the top left corner near "iPod")
15 minutes after I had been using the internet on my iPod touch 2G, I find that my iPod's WiFi connection was disconnected. At first I thought this was a router/modem problem, but I am able to use WiFi through all my computers at home. I tried forgetting the network, resetting my router, and resetting the network settings, but the results are the same.
When I go to Settings>Wi-Fi>[more router options] , the iPod does not show any IP address or subnet mask or router info. But there is a checkmark right next to my router's name.
When I try going to Safari, it gives me a "cannot open page" error: "Operation could not be completed. Invalid argument."
    I am using a Linksys WRT310N under WPA2 encryption.
    Please help!
    Thank you

Nevermind. For some odd reason, it decides to work again a couple of hours later. Really weird, but at least it's working fine now.

  • AE detects my wireless network but can't connect to the Internet

I have a DELL PC with a Linksys WRT54G router. I recently had an Airport Express installed into my Mac Mini so that I could access the Internet wireless. Although Airport Express detected my existing wireless network, I am having problems connecting to the Internet. I read several of the helpful articles in this discussion forum and using the information I learned I was able to successfully connect. But then I accidentally tampered with the settings on my Mac Mini and now for the life of me I don't recall what I did to get back onto the Internet?
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    1. unplug the DSL
    Modem and router
    2. plug the router back in and wait for the display
    lights to indicate ready.
    3. plug in the dsl modem and wait for it to display
    ready.
    4. turn on the computer that is hardwired to the dsl
    modem and router
    5. then try to get online thru my Mac OS.
Is this correct? Or should I do something else?
Perhaps disconnect everything including the computer
    and attached ethernet cables?
Close, but you need to reverse the power-on order
that you described for the modem and router, as
    follows:
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the DSL modem, Internet Router, &
computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off
    overnight.)
    - Power-on the DSL modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the Internet Router; Wait at least 5
    minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
You don't need to disconnect any of the cables.
Thanks so much for your help. Everything you suggested was right on. I am not running both my desktop PC and MAC wirelessly.

  • I reflowed my wifi chip, nothing for day's, and now it's working, but can't connect to a network

So yeah, what is the solution to fixing this problem?

So it's coming up on the list, but keeps saying the password is wrong.
My wifi has been broken for a good 18 months (Greyed), meaning not working at all, just a half second spinwheel, and never showing a single network. Now they are all showing up after I pulled it apart & wrapped it in tin foil & torched it with the heat fun 5 times.

    Hello lucky3480;
I don't know what else to do. I'm thinking of possibly returning the unit and purchasing a wireless internet card to install in the tower. Any help you can provide would be great. Even suggesting a good wireless card at this point
Well it looks like you're not having any luck at all with this AX set up but please don't give on it just yet, it's a good choice for extending your Network. Your on the right path, just going backwards and in the wrong direction. You'll learn a lot about stuff this way but may lead to other issues.
Before I continue, let me know if you have returned the AX or still need help. Here's a link to Apple's PDF about [Designing AirPort Networks|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Designing_AirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf] Click on it to open in Safari but then save it to your desktop. Now open it from your desktop and start reading Chapter 3, page 42.
    Later...

I had the same problem.  I did the reset networks on my iPhone & it did not work.  My husband read somewhere that changing the channel on the router to manual & selecting the highest available channel number might help.  I did that & it solved the problem.  I have not had the problem since.
