AEBS 5th gen - question about interference & mounting location

My base station is mounted on my desk about a foot from my iMac. The iMac isn't obstructing the transmission or receiving path to other devices (iPads, iPhones, laptops). Intermittently the wireless network seems to bog down. There are no other wireless devices within 25 ft of the base station. Is it possible that the iMac is causing interference that would intermittently slow down the wireless network operation? The symptoms are slow or hanging page loads in Safari on the laptops and iPads/iPhones, and very slow downloads at times.
My next experiment will be to turn the iMac off for a few hours and see if things improve

Not really. With locations servers off but connected to internet you can send a message via Lost Mode that will be display on the screen.

Problems reading AEBS 5th gen. configuration

Since purchasing an new model Airport Extreme I've been having difficulty consistently reading it's configuration using the Airport Utility from a 4th generation model wirelessly. Has anyone encountered similar issues? Without making any changes to any one of the devices in my wifi network, I'll be able to see the 5th generation model after the Airport utility is opened and scans for devices. I can then connect to any one of the other devices on my network, except the 5th gen. one, (which is the device connected to my internet connection). It will try connecting for a few minutes and finally stop with a notice telling me to check my connection and re-scan. Now this shouldn't be necessary since I've confirmed that all of the devices on the network still have internet access, including theone I'm running the airport utility on. This means there is a connection between the two devices, but the airport utility cannot read the configuration. I have a strong suspicion that there is a firmware/software problem with the new 5th gen. airport extreme, communicating to earlier models via the airport utility.
So I was wondering if anyone else has seen anything similar?

I am having a similar issue it looks like with my 5th generation AEBS; this is my first AEBS, though, as I switched after my other wireless router died.
Everything is kosher when I first power up or reboot the 5th gen. AEBS.
I have an iMac (wireless) and a wired PC laptop (non-apple) which I use for work connected to the AEBS, plus a few other Apple devices. I use VNC to remote connect to iMac (running Snow Leopard) and this works well right after I reboot the AEBS. I've also got a USB disk attached to the AEBS for use with Time Machine, which again works well right after rebooting the AEBS.
However, after a few hours the AEBS appears to disapear; Time Machine stops working because it can't find the disk anymore, the Airport Utility on my iMac can't even detect the AEBS when scanning but the Airport Utility on my Windows laptop can connect to it, VNC stops working from my PC and iPhone/iPad because it can't find the iMac anymore, I have been able to access my USB disks by using the IP address and "connecting to server" in Finder but Finder doesn't report it automatically anymore and Time Machine still can't see it when I do this. However, each of these systems can connect to the internet still as well as my PC can still talk to the network printer I have.
The only solution is to reboot the AEBS at which point everything starts working again.

IPod touch 5th gen question

Hello I am thinking of buying an iPod touch 5th gen off a private party. How do I check to see if it has been reported lost or stolen?

You really don't. Apple doesn't keep a public list of stolen devices.
The main thing you want to look for is that it's not locked. iOS7 came with an activation lock requiring the owner enter his/her apple ID to wipe the device. So if you open that device and it's up and running you can't wipe it and remove that apple ID without entering that apple ID.
Do you know this third party? Can they give you any sort of background? If you turn that device on and it's passcode locked and they can't give you the passcode, that's a sure sign of an issue and you should not buy it. If the iPod is not passcode locked but is up and running, go into the settings, reset, erase all content and settings and try to erase it and if the person cannot give you the apple ID to wipe the device then that's also not a good sign.
(the passcode lock is on the main screen and can be a series of letters or a simple 4 diget code. it's to protect your data on a daily basis. The activation lock is deeper adn something you only run into when you're trying to wipe the device. If your seller doesn't know either of these they're either very forgetful or may be dealing with a device that isn't theirs)

Questions about TV mounting

I noticed the fireplace mounting thread below and I understand the heating concerns if you actually burn (we will, eventually) and the height problem and that it is possible to mount on a fireplace, but I have a couple other questions....
We are currently working on building the fireplace that is the centerpiece of the room. It is also, unfortunately, the only reasonable place to mount a television in the room. This particular fireplace is not exactly a flat, plain brick fireplace. This is going to end up being a very uneven, stone surface and will present a major problem trying to mount. I'm looking for any suggestions there. I really don't want to go with a ceiling mount.
I don't own the TV as of yet. My mantle is 7.5" wide. Would the stand for, say, a 42" be too big for that? This seems like by far the easiest way to go about it, but the mantle isn't all that big. Thanks for any insight!

I would say the best idea would be to go into Best Buy and schedule a consultation. When the geeksquad installer comes out there he will be able to design the whole set-up with you. Everything from how easy it will be and what it will take to mount the TV to the fireplace and what size would be fit for the room.
There is probably a way to mount the TV to the wall and the size would really depend on what you think is too big or too small as you have probably seen the picture quality is very good even when close to a larger screen.

Question About Project File Location

I was wondering how important is the project file location when it comes to performance?
Currently, I store all of my adobe project files(AE, PRP, ENC) on my SSD along with my OS and applications.
Btw, I am familiar with the guidelines for disk usage, but cant seem to find anything that has covered this specific question.

My C:\ is an SSD, and that is OS and programs only. My D:\ is a fast WD 500 GB Raptor, and is reserved for Page file, My Documents. digital photos, and Video Projects. E:\ and F:\ are both WD RE4 RAID0s, so all my drives are fast.
I keep files which are frequently re-written, or replaced, off my SSD to avoid any risk of degradation due to repeated re-writing to the memory.

Question about Sharing My Location through iMessage

My friend has shared her location with me through iMessage using OS8 on her iPhone 5S.
My question is, will she know when I am locating her using the access she has granted me? Will she receive an email or any other notification or indication when I click on LOCATE?

recently i switched to an encrypted home partition on my laptop.
/dev/sdb2 has been encrypted with
cryptsetup options luksFormat /dev/sdb2
After booting i login as root, and do the following:
cryptsetup --allow-discards luksOpen /dev/sdb2 home
mount -o defaults,nodev,nosuid,noatime,discard /dev/mapper/home /home
I want to use pam_mount to automate the luksOpen and mount commands when i login as user.

As the wiki does not say how to change the login file, and i do not use a login manager, i am a bit lost here.
Also i do not know where to add the --allow-discards option.
What i have done so far:

And when it comes to LUKS, once unmouned the partition is unaccessible, leaving it "hidden" from all other applications, including a possibly backgrounded transmission (there may be your reason why the unmount did not work sometimes - a partition, in general, cannot be unmounted while there are opened files there).

5th gen iPod won't mount on G5 and screws with keyboard!

Is it since the itunes upgrades? I don't know, but I only use my iPOd rarely and so was surprised on plugging it into the computer that it didn't mount on the desktop
restarted: not only does it not mount but the keyboard+mouse has become unresponsive - seriously weird!
Checked all cable conections
had to force shut down
restarted: keyboard works but intermittantly,repaired permissions. Restarted - no change al locked up
Forced shut down
Removed ipod - restarted -everything is fine
except the iPOd which is totally unresponsive and is ON with the 'do not disconnect' sign
I guess it'll stay that way til the batterydies - I hope it isn't completely done for!

IPod touch 4th gen question about restoring to factory settings

I smashed the screen on my sons iPod still working but I bought a new one for him. I synced/backed up the smashed one and then connected the new one to the computer (iTunes) and restored it to the apps photos etc from the old one. We run on wi-fi. Now both iPods are working with all the same stuff on them both have the same apple Id and password and are synced to each ogher. My question is if I restore the old one to factory settings on the actual device will it also restore the new one?? Please help and Thankyou for your time anyone who replies.

No. How you sync one iPod does not affect the other. The same goes for restoring your iPod. It will have no affect on the other one.

the AEBS is acting as a bridge here? (off (bridge mode)) can the AEBS pass out ip address using a different network address here? and if it does so there will be no NAT functionality?
what does it mean to have DHCP functionality and no NAT. does using DHCP and no NAT mean that each computer, on the local network connected to the AEBS, that segment, must have a static address?

In your first configuration, where connection sharing = share a public IP address, the AEBSn is still acting as a wireless router and, effectively, has created a second wireless subnet.
In the second configuration, where connection sharing = Off (bridge mode), the AEBSn is "passing thru" the NAT/DHCP services from the router it's connected to so any devices connected to the AEBSn will still be on the same network as the upstream router.

Question about the PNG location

I've created a swf/fla simple slideshow with 5 fireworks png images.
1. Should I be using jpgs instead?
2. When uploaded to the internet, is the png now a part of the flash movie file, and not a seperate png any longer? i.e., If I had to make a change on one of the png images in the slideshow, do I have to go info Flash and re-import it, or is it pulling it from the origanl png file that also resides on the server?

If you right click on the image in the library, there is an option in the menu to Update. Also, in that same menu, if you select Properties, the interface that appears has an Update button in it. You will then have to publish the swf file again and replace that wherever it is being used.

Problems after iOS 7.1.2 on Ipod Touch 5th Gen

At about 3 hours ago my Ipod Touch 5th Gen turned off on me. It came back on itself, so I accessed the lock screen correctly put my password in and thats where my problems started.
I put in the correct password it accepted it.
The screen then changed to my background screen colour.
Very quickly the screen went black and the apple logo came on (as if it was turning on)
I repeated the process again and I can not access my home screen or any of the apps. It repeats itself.
I've had all my apps crash on me ever since I downloaded the iOS 7.1.2 update.
On the lock screen I can still access the flash light and both cameras?
What I have tried:
Turning it on and off.
Charging it.
Plugging it into iTunes.
Reset where I hold the lock and home button.
Nothing works.
Its a 32gb Ipod touch 5th gen with about 6gb of storaged unused.
I haven't dropped it or done anything unusual.
At the time it crashed I was playing on Farmville 2 app. This app crashes alot could it have something to do with it?
Please someone help me, I've googled it and can't find any problem like mine on here!

Brand-new iPod Touch 5th gen often freezes win7 while charging

I've had a new iPod touch 5th gen for about two weeks now.
I also have a laptop that runs Win7, that has had no problems whatsoever until now, and that has no problems when the iPod isn't plugged in.
Here's what happens:
I plug in the iPod Touch to update files and recharge the battery
All goes well, iTunes sees iPod, battery's charging
Lalala
Bam! Some 15-30min later:
Laptop freezes over.
I have had to manually shut down the laptop more than a dozen times in a couple weeks now.
The iPod is killing the laptop dead. Slowly, but surely, it's happening.
I love my laptop. I NEED my laptop. I otherwise love the iPod too
This happens whether the iPod is ejected, but still charging, or not; whether iTunes is on or not
I unplug the iPod: nothing; laptop still dead.
Sometimes, it happens when I change songs, as I simultaneously listen to the iPod while it charges.
Other times, it happens while fiddling with playlists and tag infos in iTunes. (<-- I am particularly weary of this one, since, it seems to me, the iPod takes a few good seconds to access tag infos/change songs, much longer than, for instance, did my iPod Nano 5th gen, though, understandably, that one did not have an OS)
Other times, it just happens suddenly, with no apparent cause other than that the iPod is plugged in.
Could it be the cable? (any way to find that out without investing in a new cable? )
The iPod runs iOS 6.1.3; the laptop runs iTunes 11.0.5.5.
The laptop is equipped with a fairly new SSD, no HDD [does that matter?!]
Any help/ideas to get these two to get along would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks.

If yo mean the iPod freeze and does some things when charging. other users have experienced that problem. However. I have not seen a reply concerning the resolution.

3 day old ipod 5th gen won't work! Scan and Fix spam message...

I have owned an ipod for about 6 years, upgrading to a new version whenever I could afford it, and for Christmas my father bought me the new 5th gen nano. The last one I had was a 2nd gen nano... I have always kept my itunes up to date and so on and so forth and I have used my new 5th gen for about three days when suddenly I plug it in today and; I start getting a spam of error messages saying that there is something wrong with the ipod and that I need to Scan and Fix it. When I click Scan and Fix it closes out and says that it can not read the disk. iTunes tells me that there s something wrong with my ipod and immediately ejects it before I can even restore it.
In addition, winamp also will not recognize the new ipod but it sees my old one...
I tried using the command prompt thing but I have no idea what driver my ipod is plugged into so I keep getting errors...
I have no idea what to do about this and I am not finding any answers, I'm getting pretty upset ):

I have a few questions about 5th gen ipod

My iPod has a very sluggish transfer rate for my music and I wanna connect it with the firewire cable I got with my old mini. When I do I get a message saying it's not supported on the ipod. Does anyone know if that is just me or if there is a firmware update.
Also I have both a iMac G4 flat panel and a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. I've had some video problems with my iMac(as you might have seen) and I am thinking of selling it on ebay, does anyone know how I can transfer the music from the mac to the windows laptop without networking or installing the ipod on the windows and transferring through that?

The 5th Gen iPods do not support Firewire for data transfer. You can only charge via Firewire. This is not a firmware issue. There's no firewire controller in the 5th Gen iPod.
does anyone know how I can transfer the music from the mac to the windows laptop without networking or installing the ipod on the windows and transferring through that?
Your iMac probably has a CD-RW drive. If so, just burn the tracks as a Data/MP3 CD, and then import that CD into your iTunes library on the Windows machine. You can fit hundreds of tracks on a DATA/MP3 CD.
