AEBS "Connecting to ISP..."

I have an AEBS (rev 5.5.1) that connects to an ISP via dial-up (there is no broadband where I live). One Airport client computer (iBook G4). I have two issues with the AEBS:
1) About every 10th connection attempt, it gets into a "Connecting to ISP... Connecting to ISP... Connecting to ISP..." loop. After waiting a minute or two, it does not go away, so I open Airport Admin Utility and reset the base station. Clicking cancel from the Airport menu (the one with the signal bands and the time connected) has no effect. It seems that the AEBS ignores external commands when it gets into this state. Is this a bug ? Is there a later software rev to fix it ?
2) The logs on the AEBS never seemed to have the correct date or time. Logs can be viewed with the Airport Management Utility. Using the AMU, I reset the NTP server host to time.apple.com. I suppose this is the correct solution for an AEBS that has a continuous connection to the internet, but it caused the AEBS to dial the ISP every 60-90 mins (all night long). Is there a better solution (like not to inquire to the ntp server unless already dialup connected) ?
Otherwise, the unit works well. Very pleased (other than #1 above).
iBook G4 (mid 2005)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

According to the Actiontec website, the device is both a DSL modem and an NAT/DHCP router. If your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is still configured as a wireless network, it will also be acting as a NAT/DHCP router, which will confuse any clients connected to it.
I suggest that you first do a "hard" reset of the AEBS. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451) Then, connect your iBook to it's LAN (<->) port directly, using an Ethernet cable, and run the AirPort Admin Utility to configure it. You will want to disable the "Distribute IP addresses" option on the "Network" tab. This way the AEBS will pass-thru the private IP addresses from the Actiontec router to any wired or wireless clients attached to it.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to ISP

TC won't connect to ISP (Charter) after resetting modem due to lost Charter connection. Have reset TC using all methods suggested in troubleshooting (pushing TC reset for one, five seconds, unplugging and pushing reset during plug in). What gives?

Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, Time Capsule (TC), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the TC; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, TC, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the TC; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Is it posable to connect 2 ISPs to Airport Extreme?

Is it posable to connect 2 ISPs to Airport Extreme for Redundancy and load balancing?  If not with Airport Extreme woudl it be posable with 2 airport extremes or some other hardware.  I know there are Cisco rauthers taht suport dual WAN but trying to stay with apple products for easier integrations as our office is primerely mac oriented.

You will need a dual WAN router to be able to do what you want. Cisco would be a good choice for this.
If you use 2 AirPort Extremes, you will have two completely separate connections....and no way to balance the load between them.

  • Mail can't connect to isp server. provider says it's an internal issue

mail can't connect to isp server. provider says it's an internal issue, mail is set up corectly.

Are connecting exclusively through IMAP or through POP?   IMAP automatically stores all the e-mails on the server.
POP gets them onto your Mac.   The advantage of IMAP, unless you desire, you are not downloading all the attachments to your hard drive, and bandwidth issues of downloading slowing you down with lots of large attachments are avoided.   The other advantage with IMAP, you can try a web based e-mail to see if your e-mail program missed downloading everything.    http://www.mail2web.com/ is my favorite web based e-mail.  I recommend at least trying it to see if it will let you see your e-mail.  Any custom folders will be invisible, but at least anything in your inbox should be visible and usable.
Are you using any other e-mail software for forwarding, such as gmail?

  • The never ending Connecting to ISP mesage-but never happens

For the last week I have had no problems with my Extreme base station which connects through Dial up and is extendeded by a Airport Express station to provide coverage to several of my families laptops. Today - I asked airport to connect like always (I dont have it configured for automatic dial) and while it began dialing like normal got stuck on the message connecting to ISP. Needless to say I have tried everything including resetting it, (which by the way is the only way I can stop the connecting to ISP message on Internet Connect) I have disconnected and turning every computer off as well as the express station and physically I reset the base station via paper clip and used the Airport assistant to set the base station up like new - but no dice. Everytime it dials (and I have actually picked up the phone to listen) it makes the call but when the message Connecting to ISP is displayed the phone goes silent and the computer is stuck displaying the scrolling message that it is connecting to the ISP. But NADA! Do you think my ISP or phone company changed something??? Could it be new firmare or airport software taking effect? Man if you have any ideas - please help.

Well I got ahold of (AppleCare) - more specifically - Sean in Austin - a product specialist who took me through - tons of stuff annnnd - NADA - had to escalate it to engineering who probably won't be able to answer until Thursday. Interestingly we were able to hook up to a Apple Server without a problem but my ISP still gives the never ending "Connecting to ISP" message - later I called my ISP and they said if your able to connect the computer to there ISP but not the router - then it isnt there problem - its Apple.
STUCK till Thursday without my EXTREME! REAK

  • Connect to ISP thru router - new setup

Connecting a new E2100L Linksys router to ISP through DSL modem produces no connection, but I am able to connect to ISP when modem is connected to computer.  This is my first router setup and I followed setup dvd.  I'm not clear what issue is.  I have shut everything down and restarted in order: DSL modem, router, computer as suggested in Documentation with same result..  Router display indicates Power; Internet Connection and connection to Computer 3.
Present internet connection through computer bypassing router.  DSL is usually connected manually through the computer .  Assistance appreciated.

  • Why does Airport Extreme frequently lose connection to ISP?

Today my Airport Extreme purchased in March 2011 has lost connection to the internet 4 times.  I have had to reboot it each time to resume using the internet.  Does this indicate a problem with this new airport exteme.  If so do I return it to an Apple Store for repair or replacement?

Today my Airport Extreme purchased in March 2011 has lost connection to the internet 4 times.  I have had to reboot it each time to resume using the internet.  Does this indicate a problem with this new airport exteme.
Possibly, but it may also indicate that the communication between the modem and the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is faulty.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Setting up CF mail server to connect to ISP mail server

I would like to setup a testing evironment and use my ISP's
mail server to test and create CF mail applications.
When I tried connecting to the ISP's mail server which is
"smtp.comcast.net " I received the following message from
CF admin "Connection Verification Failed". I also tried
entering my user name and password before the server name
    (e.g.: [email protected]:[email protected]
What would cause the communication failure from the CF server
    to the ISP's mail server?
If I cannot get this to run what alternatives do I have?
I am using WinXP pro. Can I install a mail server on my local
machine and configure CF admin to connect
to the mail server on my local machine?

You can install the SMTP server on your computer.
    Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove
    Windows Components >
Internet Information Services > Details . check the SMTP
    Service checkbox
Then use localhost as the mail server.

  • No connection to ISP

    Hello,
I've bought a Linksys WRT54-GL router and when I use my Cable Internet connectivity for a laptop I use direct DHCP. The DHCP server of the modem from the ISP gives me an IP address with DNS servers and so on and I can connect to the Internet.
With my WRT54-GL, I can create the Wireless part of the device, though I can't get a connection to my ISP. I have selected DHCP in the basic configurations and when I check with status it remains 0.0.0.0.
As the cables are okay (working for laptop), lights are all green/okay (both on ISP device and router), I am lost to what I need to do next.
Anybody has a good next step (tried several of the other setting, PPPoE, PPPTP but also no joy).

    Binky,
Many thanks for your response, though I got this working with the following action:
Power down the ISP modem for 30 minutes, power the ISP modem and get the Linksys connected again. Result it works (no MAC cloning was required).
Reason (imho): ISP is using a MAC filter on the modem, when I connected my laptop it cached my laptop MAC address (to check Internet connectivity even before I would start looking at the Linksys ;-)). This worked so I started with the Linksys and configured accordingly, though as the Laptop MAC address was cached this couldn't work.
Not sure what the aging time is for the modem of the ISP, so I just poered it off for 30 minutes (should clear the cache already by just taking iff the power, but wanted to be sure) and think this is the culprit.
So again thanks for the help and you can now become a senior specialist :-).
Ps: Do have the weird behaviour that I configured the SSID not to be broadcasted but this still occurs (even after power cycle). Will read the site if others also had this and if there is a known solution, otherwise I'll start a new thread so this doesn't get confusing/polutted.
    Cheers!

  • Disabling IPv6 seems to solve AEBS connection drop problem

As I posted earlier, I have had (like many others) a lot of problem with my Aiport ExtremeN base station. Connection was dropping every 20 minutes or so, for ethernet as well as Airport. I know it's not my DSL connection, I have used a NetGear WRT300N with no issue whatsoever in over a year.
I was really frustrated with the 180€ spent on the AEBS and about to try downgrading to earlier 7.1.1 firmware when I tried to switch the default IPv6 setting ("Tunnel") to "Local link only" (sorry if the translation is not accurate, my Airport Utility is in french).
3 days now with not a single connection dropout or AEBS reboot !
Can't explain why that is, but it works for me with the 7.2.1 firmware and Mac OS X 10.4.10 with last updates.
I thought I'd share and see if anyone has had the same experience (or can explain why !).

    Glad I could help
I thought this was worth having a topic not buried into the forums.
Funny, now that I have found this, the Google search for "IPv6 AEBS" gives quite instructing results raising security issues :
    http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/2/14/7063
    http://www.karppinen.fi/2007/04/17/turning-a-feature-into-a-flaw/
    {quote}If you don't block incoming IPv6 sessions, you can actually connect to a Mac sitting behind the Airport Extreme from the outside, using SSH or FTP over IPv6, assuming those services are enabled. Long story short, you've lost your first line of defense on your home network for IPv6-enabled servers on your Macs.{quote}
Now I am warned about it !

  • DSL disconnects randomly, still connected to ISP

    Hi!
I have an Actiontec GT784WNV modem, and it will randomly disconnect from the broadband. When I open up the router settings, and go to status, it says disconnected from the broadband, connected to the ISP. When this happens, my service drops, and when I open a webpage I get a DNS error. I either have to wait circa 2-3 minutes or hit the connect button and pray for it to reconnect quickly. I can find no rhyme or reason behind it, it is not only during peak hours, not weather related at all. Sometimes I'll go 2 hours without it happening, and other times it'll happen 5 times in a row until I reboot my modem. It is not an error with the modem, as I replaced it with another modem of the same model (both of them are new from Verizon), I replaced the phone line, etc. When I checked the NID box it was screwed in tightly and the verizon rep told me that it should be fine, and not to touch it at all. I was on the phone with them for hours, they could never find a solution.  My modem is configured to PPPoE properly, but I got the idea today of tinkering with the "DSL Settings" page in my router, but I honestly don't know what to adjust so I don't want to screw it up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The modem settings should be fine if you are connected and working fine otherwise. One thing you may want to look for and check is a setting for what mode ADSL uses. This should be set to MMODE or automatic so the modem can use the best mode supported with Verizon's equipment. Away from that, see if you can supply the DSL statistics from your modem. They should give us an idea of your package and line condition.

  • AEBS Connection Time Out - No Connection

OS 10.5.4 or 10.5.5 tried both:
Within the past couple of days my MacBook can no longer make a reliable connection to my AEBS. The MacBook sees about 8 other wireless networks in my neighborhood but at time, my AEBS is not even on the list of available networks. When it does appear, I can't connect it using the correct password. MacBook scans persistently, the number of networks change. I'd suspect my internal card but it's the AEBS that seems to be the most illusive for it find and hang onto. When I do connect, the transport rate is very sluggish and at times stalls out.
    Clean install twice yesterday.

    I appreciate the suggestions.
In some ways, the problem began with the installation of OS 10.5.0 some time ago. It cleared up in 10.5.1.
The base station has not changed in location for 4 years and no new wireless devices have been added in the house.
It's one of those intermittent problems that has worsened. Often my AEBS is not even on the list of available networks. I CAN see the networks of what is probably my nearest neighbors. That list is not always the same either.
When my AEBS shows up, I often cannot connect with it. When I do, transport is slow - if not non existent. Just now, I was able to both see it and connect. To see if I get transport, I'll have to send this message as I am in the "bridged" mode with a CAT5 cable running to the base station which is psychically connected to the hardwired router.
It's an issue between my Intel Macbook and the AEBS circa 2004. Older iBook hanging around - no problems in finding or connecting.
I've been traveling. Sometimes but not always logging into free WiFi at airports. This happened the same way last month after going across the US. Similar issue after returning from another cross country trip. I've deleted all but a couple of familiar networks. All the ones from airports are at least out of the list. If some public Wi-Fi drops a cookie on me and it takes some time to expire - my only guess.
On return, things seem fine for a day or two - then the problem occurs.

  • Wiki for home user connecting with ISP who blocks the port 80

I setup a Standalone Wiki at home with a connection to an internet router but the ISP blocks the default port 80. I'm not experienced in Advanced Server mode and wants to get it done in server preference instead of Server Admin.
I did a risky procedure by run the Admin server to tweak the Web service - change the port from 80 to 16080. And managed the users sometimes in workgroup Manager and sometimes in Server preference ->groups. It runs well in the first days but then I restart the server I found, "Not Found
404: No group with that name (mac) hosted on this server" error.
the folders were still there but the server reports this error. I attempt to delete and add in Server preference for another group but in vain. the user blog is prefect. you can try http://khszeto.dyndns.org:16080/users/
    username: mac1 password: mac1
What I want is getting my old wiki group back and I can create new group.

It's likely Server Admin being referenced.
You can change the port using the Apache configuration (text) files and setting up a virtual host on an alternate port, or you can use Server Admin to set this up for you. The Apache files are pretty clear around how to do this, and SA is itself pretty easy.
I'd probably not use a direct connection into the Apache port (16000 + the "real" Apache port) for web access (when the performance cache is enabled) as the base reply here has used, I'd tend to stick to the designated port. I'd tend to use one of the "traditional" alternate ports for the web server. These can be 81, 8080 or 8000. There's no tweak for 16080, as that port is part of how Apache works when the performance cache is enabled on port 80.
The other aspect here is usually dynamic DNS, as most folks that are seeking this lack static IP address, and the lack of a static IP makes dynamic DNS a requirement for in-bound access. The IP addresses on some ISPs can shift fairly frequently. This was mentioned earlier.
And FWIW, Mac OS X Server generally wants a static IP address.
I'll leave you to deal with the terms and conditions and requirements for your ISP. Some will explicitly disallow server access. Many will monitor network traffic. Most want you to purchase static IP and related.

  • RV180 router will not connect to ISP using PPPoE

I had the same problem.  The RV180W would not connect to an AT&T DSL connection using PPPoE (modem in bridge mode), or behind the DSL Modem/router with the DSL modem/router providing a dynamic IP to the RV180W or a cable modem (TimeWarner Roadrunner dynamic IP).  I upgraded the firmware yesterday and now the RV180W will connect to a dynamic WAN IP, but it still will not connect using PPPoE.
I have also noticed the admin interface is only accessible about 75% of the time.  When going to 192.168.1.1 the login prompts either don't come up or if they do, after logging in, the screen never fully loads after that.  I have to reboot the router to get it to work.
Also, the router has not yet pulled DNS from either the DSL or the cable modem.  I had to manually enter those addresses.
Any suggestions on the PPPoE issue?  Any thoughts as to why the admin interface is not always accessible or the DNS?
    Thank you,
