AEBS Graphite & Snow and Express Questions

Just moved my mac mini into a refinished basement and now am having drop out problems with the AEBS Graphite & Snow (it's now having to go through several walls, carpet and a new ceiling). The Graphite & Snow is on the main floor, where the cable modem is, and where it has to be since my wife's work computer is there; her PC cannot be wireless on account of work security.
I was wondering if getting an airport express would help strengthen the signal, since it can be used as a range extender?
Or would getting a new Airport Extreme serve the same purpose as adding an Express to an older model Graphite snow?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

The problem is that the Graphite and Snow can't be extended wirelessly. Even WDS isn't an option with them.

Typically silly IT nonsense. Do their meetings require Maxwell Smart's Cone of Silence? (What???)
I suppose they don't allow cell phone use either.

  • Axiom 25 and Express Questions

    Hi guys!
Ive got some questions about syncing up my M-audio axiom 25 to Logic. My goal right now is to be able to write bass and drum parts (addictive drums) into the piano roll in write mode using the midi controller.
    1. first off how do I make the rotary controllers, say B1 to command logic to change the quantize parameters for when i'm writing drums in piano roll. turning clockwise will change the quantize value from 1/4 to 1/6 and counter clock wise will turn from 1/4 to 1/3.
    2. After that, how can I set B2 to transport left or right in piano roll (clock wise counter clockwise) so the playhead can move to the quantized value, which would allow rests.
    3. How can I set so my keystroke hits are placed between a certain velocity range? Like notes i play can only sound between 100 and 127 velocity.
    4. Could you maybe give me some other cool functionality ideas for syncing the two up for my work environment? Im sure there are things I haven't thought of because im new to the whole concept of a MIDI controller.

    Hi,
i don't know the Axiom, so maybe i'm wrong.
First, read the chapter on Control Surfaces in the Manual. Especially the Learn function (CMD-L) which can quick assign functions to a midi controller. Maybe this is all you need to get the knobs'n'buttons work. Select the function in Logic by clicking on it, press CMD-L and move the desired controller. That's all there is. You can, however, assign it manually in the control surface setup.
The second thing is the velocity range. This can be done afterwards with the transform function.
Usually i don't say this, but: Have a look in the manual. The tasks you want to perform are very specific, and it would be a long run to explain every little step here. However, feel free to ask if you have further questions

  • Coming over from the dark side.....many questions...Extreme and Express

My 1st apple product was the iPhone so now I believe!
Recently, I purchased an Airport Extreme 802.11n from eBay.
Question #1: Are there two versions of the Airport Extreme 802.11n? How do I know if I have the dual-band version? From the Airport Utility, I can choose the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band but not both. I can see that there is a "b/g" compatible mode but what does it mean if I choose the b/g compatible mode? It seems that I have the older 802.11n Airport Extreme model?
I also purchased a used Airport Express b/g model. I thought it was the "n" model because it looks like the "n" model (all white). I have a bad feeling that this does not have the WDS feature. If this is the case, does that mean I can't use this Airport Express to extend the Airport Extreme Base Station?
Can I use bridge mode wireless to extend the wireless signal in my home although I will have two wireless ID's in the home? Basically, with the Extreme and Express that I have now, can I set it up to extend wireless coverage in my home?
My Extreme is currently on 7.3.1 because 7.4.1 is not stable. My Windows pc's disconnects all the time.
    My Express is on 6.3.

Hello westladog. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Are there two versions of the Airport Extreme 802.11n?
There are actually three "versions." Here they are in "oldest" to "newest" order:
    o Non-Gigabit Ethernet (Part No. MA073LL/A)
o Gigabit Ethernet (Part No. MB053LL/A)
    o Dual-Band (Part No. MB763LL/A)
Based on your description, you have either the non-Gigabit or Gigabit version.
I can see that there is a "b/g" compatible mode but what does it mean if I choose the b/g compatible mode?
That would mean that your AirPort will support both 802.11n and 802.11b/g wireless clients simultaneously.
I also purchased a used Airport Express b/g model. I thought it was the "n" model because it looks like the "n" model (all white). I have a bad feeling that this does not have the WDS feature.
Both the newer 802.11n or older 802.11b/g versions of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) support WDS ... so either could be used to extend the wireless range of your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).
Can I use bridge mode wireless to extend the wireless signal in my home although I will have two wireless ID's in the home?
With a WDS, you will only have one "wireless ID." The AirPorts use the term "Network Name." It is also known as a SSID.
Basically, with the Extreme and Express that I have now, can I set it up to extend wireless coverage in my home?
    Yes.

  • AEBS(802.11n) and WDS with Express or Extreme

This problem is making me doubt my sanity.
I have an Extreme Basestation and and Express and a new AEBSn.
I previoulsy set up the Extreme as the WDS master and the Express as a Relay.
Now the AEBSn is the master and I can NOT get either of the other two Apple routers to connect and function as WDS Relay stations or WDS Remote stations. I have attempted both using manual configuration following exactly the same steps I did with the Extreme/Express combination.
But it will not work. Neither the Extreme nor the Express will connect to the AEBSn. I do note that the AEBSn does not have a WDS page or tab in Airport Utility but I did select "Allow this network to be extended" and I selected Create a wireless network.
Does anyone know how to make this work? Does it work?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

.. the automated system, i'm assuming that you mean selecting next, next next.
Correct - except the word on my Airport Utility is "Continue"
then after the first reboot and the configuration is loaded, go into manual and select "Allow this network to be extended",
Correct - and be sure to turn off Access Control and turn off "Create a closed network". Once you have both basestations configured and working, you can go back in manually and set those options if you need those two extra levels of security.
..it tells me that it can't find any networks to connect to!!
Always make sure you have updated the software and the firmware for both basestations and for your computers. There have been several Airport connect bug and fixes, both to the basestations and to the Airport cards in the computers. And make sure you have the lastest version of the Airport Utility.
(When I first loaded 10.4.10 I screwed up all my wireless connections. I had to go back, reinstall the OS and use the Combo updater to update to 10.4.9 before my wireless would work. Later, on these forums, I learned that the 10.4.10 update had some issues in the first release. About two months after the initial release, I updated to 10.4.10 - using the Combo, NOT Delta - updater and finally had reliable wireless connections.)
Once other note: I have done a LOT of work on my neighbor's LAN. I finally figured out that their ISP's modem had NATs and DHCP running on the modem. I could not make their network work until I turned off NATs and DHCP on the LAN router (bridge mode). Make sure you do not have DHCP/NATs conflicts with your ISP's modem.
Leave the second device unplugged until you have the first basesetation configured and you can connect to it wirelessly. Disconnect your Ethernet cables to make sure there are no conflicting IP addresses or host names.
Once you have connected to the first basestation, then open Airport Utility and wait for the second device to come up.
Do not double click on the second basestation. Just click it once to select it then click "Continue" . Read all of the options carefully. I do not remember the exact language but one option is to connect to or expand and existing network. Once you get to that point, it is fairly simple.
Good luck! Let me know if it works.

  • New Extreme vs. Graphite & Snow

    Hi all
I'm considering the new airport extreme for the simple reason that we remodeled our basement and are now having mega connection issues with our airport extreme graphite and snow which is upstairs. Now with the addition of walls and a ceiling, and the fact that my mac is in the basement and the snow and graphite is upstairs, the reception is horrible: drop outs, weak signals, difficulty connectimg.
the question: since the new airport extreme is supposed to broadcast further with a stronger signal, will that mean it can penetrate walls and ceilings more efficiently than the older technology?
    thanks in advance

Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.1)

I wouldn't count on it. There seem to be no answers to the poor performance problems with the AE in various firmware levels.
Go with a cheaper dLink or LinkSys with g & n capabilities. I think you'll be much happier.
I speak from personal and painful experience. The AE is much slower than the dLink I bought, and connections are intermittent with the AE, whereas with the dLink, all is well. This with an iMac from 2007 with all the latest Leopard patches.
Best of luck with your issues.

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • HOW do I get my Extreme base station and Express to join a Linksys network?

OK... so I have FINALLY enabled my SLINGBOX to view remotely by totally removing my Airport Extreme & Express from the network look. I was told they are both routers and I have to pick one. The Linksys network works fine for all networking purposes... what it WON'T DO is connect my USB printer or stream iTunes to remote speakers. NOW, I have been told by using the Extreme & Express in "client mode" I can do this.
Basically HOW do I get my Extreme base station and Express to join the exsiting Linksys network?

Sorry but the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does NOT have a client mode.
The AirPort Express (AX) does have a client mode. The directions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Issues while building formulas and expressions

    Hi,
I have a couple of questions regarding the formulas and expressions in MDM. It would be a great help if someone could us on these:
<b>1</b>.While creating a Syndication map in MDM Syndicator, we need to do some calculation on some of the attributes/fields and need to store results in new Custom fields.  The problem is when we create a new Custom Item and use Formula to create a formula like <MM Number:mm number> * 12, it is showing us result in Destination Preview as 100*12 rather than computing the value as 1200. The same is the case is for UOM conversion where we want to convert inches into feet. Can we do such such asthmatic calculations in syndicator? Is there any other way to get the same result?
<b>2</b> Calculated Filed Expression Builder screen for any table field in Console has Attribute List option always disabled. Only the Fields list is available on this screen. The same is the case for Validation and Assignment builders in Data Manager. Is it possible to select Attributes as well while creating “Calculated field Expressions” (Console) Validation and Assignment Expressions (Data Manager)?
We are using MDM 5,5 SP4 Patch01 on Windows XP Professional.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    -Irfan

    Hi Irfan,
    1) If you want to use formula like 100*12 and want to get result than syndicator is not for this. This kind of formula should be used in Data manager. Custom field in syndicator is not for this purpose. When you want to add and custom field in your output file which is not present in your current display than with the help of Custom field, you can see that field in Destination Preview.

  • Moving between Extreme Base Station and Express Base Stations with Mac & PC

I just bought an Airport Express and connected it as an extension to my Airport Extreme Base station. All firmware has been updated as of today. I have things configured such that the Extreme is WEP but allowing for extension and the Express is working. My Macbook appears to be connecting to the Express now but it seems like I have to use the Utility to select either the Express or Extreme base station manually as opposed to having it just go to the strongest source automatically. Maybe I made an assumption that it worked like an access point. Moreover, the laptop PCs in the house are not making the jump to the Express at all. I can install the Utility on one of them and probably manually make the change but the other is a Corporate PC that is 'locked down.' And of course that is the one that I want to be able to use around the house.
    Does anyone know if:
    1. There is an ability to bounce between the Extreme and Express like access points on the Mac and the PC
    2. Is there a way to configure a PC to use the Express or the Extreme without the Utility (i.e., if I setup the Express with a different Network name)
The key issue is that I do not have the ability to run an ethernet between the two base stations - they can only connect wirelessly.
    Thanks for your help!

cosmomurphy, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do you have the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) configured as a WDS main and the AirPort Express (AX) as a WDS remote?
Or are they both 802.11n capable and the AEBS is configured to have the extend network feature is enabled and the AX configured to act as an extension?
In either of those cases, they are working together as one big wireless network. In that situation, any client will connect to the base station which appears to be the "best" connection for them.
There is no need to install the AirPort Utility on any device. Any device with 802.11b/g/n wireless ability can connect to the network.

  • Rules Manager and Expression filer on XE

Has any one installed Rules Manager and Expression filter on an XE database? Would love to check it out on XE. Looks like it is not pre-installed. I was able to run the install scripts. I noticed one error though. It seemed to indicate jvm is not installed on XE. Tried to locate initjvm scripts. Either the script name has changed in XE or it is not there. This is a quick question in case somebody has gone down this path. I will post more details soon when I get sometime to look at the full log.

Read the post about javavm. I could not find the post where Tom has said it would be very problematic to install javavm on XE. I guess Rules Manager and Expression filter on XE is not possible or very difficult.

  • Connecting Extreme and Express via ethernet to both transmit

    Hi,
I have a brand new Airport Extreme and Express set up in my house. At the moment the Express is wirelessly extending the range of the Extreme and also serving Airtunes to my Stereo.
My question is can I connect the Airport Extreme and Express via ethernet so that they both transmit a wi fi signal. Or can the Express only connect to the Extreme wirelessly when acting as a network extender?

I figured it out after I did the post.
I plugged them both in to the Ethernet but instead of having the Express extending the Extremes network, I set them both up with the same Name and Password to act independantly as an Active Roaming network.
Now my laptop just picks the one with the best signal as I roam the house and you don't even notice it change Airport.
My Airtunes is now hard wired as well.
    thanks.

  • Slow Wi-Fi connection with both Extreme and Express

    Hi all,
I have problems with slow Wi-Fi connection at home. With my 100/100 Mbit/s fiber I have an Airport Extreme 802.11ac connected by Ethernet cable directly into the cable modem.
With only the Extreme as a router I was not satisfied with the Wi-Fi range and therefore also bought an Airport Express 802.11n (2nd generation ) to extend the network with.
The range got better but I'm facing real slow Wi-Fi connection both on the Extreme and the Express.
Example - When connected to the Extreme less than 1 meter from it I normally get a down speed on 30 Mbit/s and on the Express (placed 8 meters from the Extreme) I normally get between 2 to 8 Mbit/s down speed.
I have a couple of questions about this issue below that I hope someone can answer.
    1. The Extreme and the Express are connected wireless. If I connect them together with cable instead, will I then get the same speed from the Express that I have on the Extreme?
    2. I've read in several forums that the latest versions on the Extreme and Express causes bad Wi-Fi connections and an downgrade to earlier version is recommended. My problem is that Airport Utility only can find the latest versions when trying to downgrade (bought both of them recently).
How can I downgrade to earlier versions when Airport Utility can't find them? If possible, is this still recommended to do?
    Current versions:
    Extreme - 7.7.3
    Express - 7.6.4
    3. Could it cause problems if the Extreme and Express doesn't have the same versions, or is this normal?
    4. Any suggestions to improve the down speed on my Wi-Fi connection?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Cable connections are always better.
But test first.. turn off the express.. reboot or even factory reset the extreme and have another go with it.
On a computer plugged in by ethernet test the speed.. wireless should be off..
So the most important thing is .. do you get full speed by ethernet.. if not you will never get it by wireless.. always less.. and sometimes much less.
    2. You cannot downgrade either of those models. So you are stuck with them as is..
    3. I think wireless links are always problematic.. by the very nature of the beast you will drop your speed by half.. so if the links were perfect.. and the Extreme wireless gives you 30Mbit then the best the express could ever give you is 15Mbit.. it is the nature of wireless.
    4. Yes.. we can make suggestions.
But give me the pure wired network speed first. If that is low then tell me what modem you are using, which you mentioned.. normally a fibre system has no modem just a fibre converter to ethernet called ONT. Optical Network Terminal

My Apple ID showed security problem that needs to reset my password. But I forget my resue email and scecurity questions' answers. So what can I do?

If you are on Lion or newer, follow directions here:
Reset the user password in OS X Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks
Reset 10.5 Leopard & 10.6 Snow Leopard password
      1. Power on or restart your Mac.
      2. At the chime (or grey screen if your chime is turned off), hold down Command+S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
      3. This step is optional, but it’s a good idea because it checks the consistency of the hard disk before moving on. At the prompt, type fsck -fy and press Enter/Return. Wait for the checks to complete before going to the next step.
      4. Type mount -uw / and press Enter.
      5. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plistand press Enter.
      6. Type ls /Users and press Enter. This lists all of the usernames on the computer – helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
      7. Type dscl . -passwd /Users/username password and replace “username” with one of the users displayed in the previous step. Replace “password” with a new password of your choice. Press Enter.
      8. Type reboot and press Enter.
