AEBS in bridge mode

What am I doing wrong?
Hi, this is a re-branded follow-up post of a question yesterday.
I'm trying to make my AEBS work in bridge mode without success. I have followed instructions from documentation (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networksv4.2.pdf) but it still does not work.
Here is a quick picture of what I have done:
iMac-))))((((- AEBS ----- MacBook
The iMac has its Airport interface and the MacBook its built-in ethernet interface manually configured on a common subnet. The AEBS does not allocate IPs and has a self-assigned IP. The AEBS is physically connected to the MacBook via its LAN port.
Still the iMac and MacBook cannot see each other.
Questions:
- The AEBS and the macs are configured to use WAP2 personal. Can that cause a pbm?
- What else should I check?
- Any other info I coud provide to help?
Thx for any help

If I understand your post correctly, you are using your iMac as a wireless base station to create a wireless network. Then you want your AEBS to join that network. Is that correct?
If that is correct, it will not work. The AEBS can only wirelessly join a network if it is configured to use WDS. Since the iMac acting as a wireless base station does not support WDS this is not possible.
I hope that I am misunderstanding your setup. Since the iMac and MacBook both have wireless capability, why are you trying to use the AEBS as a bridge?

  • Arris modem & AEBS in bridge mode w/ OS X server (Yosemite)

I have been using a AEBS (ac) as router in bridge mode behind an Arris cable modem (with its own wireless network setup) and have it create a wireless network. I extended it with 1xAEBS (ac) and 2x AEBS (n) to reach all corners of the house, all in "extend" and "bridge" mode. The AEBS (ac) router is using Ethernet cable to connect to Arris modem. This setup worked well for me and still does, until...
Recently, to get access to my files on the network from the Internet, I installed OS X server (4.2) on Yosemite running on a MP (have a few drives attached). I intend to use the servers VPN service, but cannot get its new reachability tool to identify any services running. After doing some searching I found tutorials on how to run the AEBS in DHCP and NAT mode, which results in a double NAT error the way my modem/provider service is setup.
I have not been able to find a tutorial how to configure the server in Internet mode behind the AEBS (ac) router in bridge mode. I do have a domain name, but the service provider does not offer Dynamic DNS service. And I did let the server install the DNS services automatically.
A server setup guide when running AEBS in bridge mode would be very helpful.
I would need some help configuring the AEBS router as well as setting up the server - thanks a lot!

I see nobody else has jumped in.. so I read this last night and thought it was a bit too hard..
But perhaps I can get you to at least clarify some stuff.
Arris cable modem (with its own wireless network setup)
What model is the arris? Since it has its own wireless it is a router.. or what is sometimes called gateway.
I have been using a AEBS (ac) as router in bridge mode
You cannot use "as router" in bridge.. they are opposites.. but I think you just mean.. AEBS is in bridge.. the mention of router is to qualify the AEBS which we know is a router.
I intend to use the servers VPN service, but cannot get its new reachability tool to identify any services running.
I do not use server and I would not have done the setup this way to get access to your files.. but the vpn service should work.
Test by using a computer on the local network running a vpn client to see if you can log in to the server. It is much easier to get things working locally before you attempt to do it remotely.
What type of vpn is it.. I can look it up but easier if you post the details.. each vpn uses different port forwarding requirements. PPTP is different to IPSEC which is different to L2TP which is different to SSL.
After doing some searching I found tutorials on how to run the AEBS in DHCP and NAT mode, which results in a double NAT error the way my modem/provider service is setup.
You cannot run two routers.. that will mess things up. The AEBS should be in bridge.. double NAT will kill your access.
I have not been able to find a tutorial how to configure the server in Internet mode behind the AEBS (ac) router in bridge mode. I do have a domain name, but the service provider does not offer Dynamic DNS service. And I did let the server install the DNS services automatically.
Some of this I have not used.. so I cannot say much.. I much prefer to do vpn using vpn routers.. it is far easier.
Anyway.. the bridged AEBS is irrelevant.. your problem is needing to setup the Arris for VPN pass through. This sometimes involves something simple like tick a box.. it can also be complicated and need port forwarding.
You can use Dynamic DNS client in the Arris.. that will be the best place to set this up.
You will need to download and read carefully the manual for your arris gateway.
Let me also suggest you run ethernet directly to the arris .. bypass the Extreme altogether.. it is not related to this setup but can cause issues.. because Apple have some inbuilt ipsec security for BTMM.
For setting up yosemite server to do vpn I recommend you post in the Server OS area of the discussions.

  • AEBS in bridge mode: wired problems

Hello, I can't manage to setup AEBS to fit my needs.
    Here's the situation:
There's a router/switch that provides net access (wired) to the flats in my building. It distributes IPs through DHCP (in the range 10.68.3.x).
Plug1 (office room): Mac Pro, wired connection
Plug2 (living room): AEBS (through LAN port)
    AEBS LAN port: XBox 360
    AEBS wireless: Powerbook
the AEBS is configured to be a client to DHCP and in bridge mode.
the Mac Pro, AEBS and Powerbook get correctly their config (in the 10.68.3.x range) but the XBox does not (169.254.240.x).
If I wire the powerbook to the AEBS and switch off airport, same thing, it loses its config and get a 169. address.
So basically, it seems it bridges between LAN and wireless but not between LAN/LAN.
I know i can get something working if i accept to have the MacPro on another subnet than the network after the AEBS (if i use DHCP/NAT with AEBS). But then I loose the possibility to share files between the two computers.
Another possibility would be to use a switch before the AEBS for the wired part of the network i guess, but i'd prefer not to add one more piece of hardware.
Does anyone went through this type of problems or setup? Or is it definitely not possible? Any clue will help.
PS: The final network would be more complicated if i get past this stage (WDS with Airport Express to cover the whole flat)

Have you tried changing this to the WAN port?

  • Extend Verizon 802.11g router using AEBS in bridge mode for better reception by Airport Express at other end of apt.?

I connect to the internet using a Verizon FIOS router, 802.11g. The brand name is Actiontec MI424-Rev. D. I stream music from my MacBook Pro and/or iPhone and use an Airport Express to connect to my stereo receiver, which is wired to in-wall speakers. The streaming experience is pretty uneven. The Apple Store recommended an Airport Extreme to beef up the network. Note: this is an average Manhattan apartment, not a vast mansion, but there is lots of interference due to a couple dozen other wireless networks in my building. Which is the best way to set up the network for more robust streaming and fewer dropouts?

Ok, then let's start with the following as the basic configuration of your "single" wireless network.
The Actiontec will be the main Internet router; no configuration changes would be required.
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) directly to the Actiontec router by Ethernet; reconfigure the AEBSn as a bridge, and also, reconfigure the AEBSn as the "main" base station in the extended wireless network.
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), by wireless to the AEBSn. Configure the AXn to extend the wireless range of the AEBSn.
The following are step-by-step instructions on configuring the AirPorts for an extended network:
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
Temporarily connect the AXn directly to one of the available LAN ports on the AEBSn during the setup phase. Once completed, disconnect the AXn and place it at the desired location.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the AEBSn.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click Internet in the toolbar, and then, click on the Internet Connection tab. Change Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)."
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click on the Wireless tab.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the AXn, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Alternative AEBS setup to Bridged mode? Qwest DSL, ActionTec GT701

I just upgraded to the new dual mode AEBS and it's a different setup than my old Airport Extreme that died. Things are working OK at the moment with the AEBS in bridge mode (which is required to avoid the double NAT error), letting the GT701 handle PPPoE, NAT and DHCP.  But as I've learned from these forums, this disables the Guest Network feature on the AEBS, and also requires me to e.g. setup port forwarding via the GT701 web interface. I've read I can put the GT701 in bridge mode and have everything including PPPoE authentication handled by the AEBS, but if possible, I think I'd prefer to have the GT701 handle only the PPPoE authentication with the Qwest server, but manage all LAN settings and functions via the AEBS. Is this kind of configuration possible?  If so, what are the correct GT701 and AEBS settings?
Please don't let my throwing around of these acronyms fool you - I'm know little about this stuff.  I tried to get help from Qwest ("we only support the basic configuration, for advanced configuration talk to ActionTec...") and ActionTec ("Qwest provides all DSL support for their modems, you need to call them..."), to no avail.  I've downloaded the manual for the GT701, but I'm in over my head already.  Suggestions welcome, thanks.

Option 1: Set up the WRT as access point. Follow these instructions. (I think the actiontec uses 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 by default thus 192.168.0.2 should be a good LAN IP address for the WRT).
Option 2: Put the Actiontec into bridge mode which basically turns of the router. Then configure the WRT for your internet connection and connect it with the internet port to the modem. However, in case you have to use PPPoA (i.e. you have PPPoA configure in the modem at the moment) then you cannot do it. The WRT54GS does not support PPPoA only PPPoE.
Please make sure that there is no USB connection to the modem! The USB connection will interfere with the connection through the ethernet port!

  • No printing in bridge mode

Setting up an AEBS for use with an IMac. Using cable modem so I had to set the AEBS to bridge mode to be able to access the internet. Have an HP photoprinter/scanner hooked up that will work with a USB connection to the IMac but not when plugged into the AEBS. I've added a new printer for the HP using bonjour. The IMac seems to "see" the printer but nothing happens. Any ideas?
Would a work around be to attach the printer directly to the IMac and just allow it to be shared through the IMac?

As long as the airport is getting an IP, it should be working. Though if you had it set up in non-bridge mode before and it worked, the computer could be saving settings/information from the previous setup.
I'd check the airport utility and first make sure the airport is getting a valid IP (in the internet section). If so, check the printers section and make sure the printer is detected. Then remove and re-add the printer on the computers (in print & fax system preferences).
The work around you mentioned will also work.

  • Bridge Mode Problems?

Connected my new AEBS gigabit model one week ago to our existing home network with the AEBS in bridge mode. All worked fine for 7-days but we lost internet connection yesterday. The Belkin router needed to be reset and Belkin support says its because the AEBS is set up in bridge mode.
Setup is: DSL modem (providing PPoE to ISP) connected to Belkin 4-port wired ethernet router WAN port and AEBS WAN port connected to "regular" port on the Belkin router. DSL modem and wired router are downstairs (in home office) and the AEBS is upstairs (for full house wireless coverage).
I need to maintain the current physical locations of the hardware. Do I need to change the setting of the AEBS from bridge mode? What other setting(s) would work?
    Thanks

Hello MacsNMore. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
This looks like a good setup. I assume that your Belkin router is providing NAT & DHCP services...correct?
I need to maintain the current physical locations of the hardware. Do I need to change the setting of the AEBS from bridge mode? What other setting(s) would work?
Having the AEBSn in bridge mode would be the most appropriate configuration for your network setup.
    Let's double-check your AEBSn's settings...
Temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Mode, check these settings:
    Internet - Internet Connection
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    o IP Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o Subnet Mask: <provided by your ISP>
    o Router Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o DNS Server(s): <provided by your ISP>
    o Domain Name: <provided by your ISP>
    o DHCP Client ID: (optional)
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)

  • Bridge Mode and Wireless Clients

I have my network up and running fine, but I am now thinking I may need to tweak it a bit. I have an AEBS(n) and an Airport Express both set up with WDS. The Extreme is the base station and the Express is set in WDS Remote and in Bridge mode under the internet tab. The Express is hooked up via a wired ethernet connection to my PS3. Everything works.
I am wondering if in bridge mode, the express accepts wireless clients as well as providing net access to my PS3 over the ethernet cable. Both the extreme and express stations are close enough together that I am not sure which one I am connecting to when I use my laptop wifi.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I am wondering if in bridge mode, the express accepts wireless clients as well as providing net access to my PS3 over the ethernet cable.
Yes if you enable that option.

  • WAN security in bridge mode

    Greetings!
I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n hooked up to a cable modem, and I am pondering switching the Airport from NAT mode to bridge mode. The purpose is to give each client on the network its own WAN IP. As I share an apartment with two friends, this has benefits in that it allows each of us to be as hidden or visible on the internet as we like, without disadvantage to the others.
I am looking for some input on the security implications of this besides the obvious fact that all clients are now solely dependent on their own firewalls.
    Some questions:
    - I have two hard drives shared with AirDisk. If I have deselected the option to make them available via WAN, is this enough to keep anyone from accessing them from the outside?
    - I know there is a lot of "background noise" on the internet – random infested computers scanning random IPs. This will of course be stopped by the firewalls on the clients (of which two of three are Macs), but is this traffic of such a volume that wireless performance will be affected?
    - Do you have any other thoughts on the implications of such a configuration?
    Any input is greatly appreciated!

Your ISP is most likely only allowing you one IP number. While you might be able to call them up and have another number added to your connection, if this is available, it will cost you more money. NAT not only acts as a firewall but it splits the one IP number up between two computers so that you don't have to pay an ISP for every piece of hardware on your network.
Even if you have share over WAN disabled, when you turn on bridge mode, that setting will disappear is it no longer applies and it will be accessible over the network.
So what do we have now? Your computer will be requesting an IP number and your roommates computer will be requesting one too, but wait the AEBS also wants its own number, so that's three numbers, plus you will also not be able to block people from trying to change settings on your router.
If you or your roommate are running any software that requires it be recognized by incoming network traffic, then take a look into setting up port forwarding or turning on host computer for for whichever machine needs this.

  • Request for "Bridge mode" after firmware update

Since updating the firmware on my Extreme the amber light continues to flash, although I appear to have normal internet connection. When I check with the Airport set-up utility I am told that there is a problem and I should select "bridge mode". Can anyone talk me through how to do this?

Given that your AEBS is in series with another router (your Linksys), you should use Airport Utility -> Internet panel to set Connection sharing: Off (Bridge mode). This will accomplish two things:
    1) The annoying yellow LED will turn green.
    2) Any clients wired into the AEBS LAN ports as well as all your wireless clients will now be on the same private LAN segment as all the clients plugged in to the Linsksy. As Martha would say, its a good thing.
You will, of course, still have Internet access but you will gain easy access to othe machines on the wired network for file sharing, Bonjour printers. You can check that this has occurred by displaying your IP address now (Network Preferences -> Airport -> TCP/IP panel vs what you see after you turn on Bridge Mode and reestablish the wireless connection. The IP address numbers will change.

  • My dsl speeds sink using AEBS in PPPoE mode...need ideas.

Just got new 15mbps ADSL put in. Tech measured speed at 17.2 down/1.2 up right at the Westell 7500 modem. After she left, I put the Westell in Bridge mode, set up the AEBS to handle the PPPoE connection.
Measured on the AEBS lan port, I'm now seeing barely 8-11mbps down and only 650-750kbps up!  Before I call them back and rag on them to test the circuit again, can anyone guess why there would be such a difference in speed between the Westell handling the PPPoE and the Airport Extreme?
Are there settings that can be "adjusted" in the AEBS to improve this? I've never seen any. I'm perplexed.

Another thing to check on the Westell if you configured it to act as a bridge.....most Westell devices still require you to turn off DHCP as a separate setting even if the device is in bridge mode. If you did not turn off DHCP on the Westell, then you have two devices both trying to do DHCP, which could certainly cause some slowdowns on a network.
Normally, you want the PPPoE service to be handled on the device that is closest to the Internet connection....which would be the Westell gateway.  There is also a good chance that the Westell gateway is specifically optimized for the higher speed 15 Mbps service.
As a test, I would suggest re-configuring the Westell to provide the PPPoE service and then configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to see what kinds of speeds you get at the LAN port on the AirPort Extreme with this type of configuration.
If the speed returns, then you know that the Westell has been optimized for the new service provided by the ISP. In that case, running the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode would really be your only option for highest speed performance.

  • Airport Extreme in Bridge mode with Linksys WRT610N

Is there a way to wirelessly connect my AEBS to a Linksys 802.11N (WRT610N) router. I think this is called bridge mode. My need is to have the WRT610N connect upstairs to the cable modem and then my computers hard wired into the AEBS bridging the 802.11N coming from the Linksys.

Apple does adhere strictly to the standards. Unfortunately there is no "standard" for wirelessly extending a network. A strategy is loosely described by a strict definition is not made. Therefore usually this does not work between manufacturers and sometimes doesn't even work between devices from the same manufacturer.

  • Extreme running in bridge mode, can't get out past router or firewall

    Hello
I have my Laptop, Mini and an older PC connected to my wireless network via my new airport extreme. I had teh system connected and got the solid green light but no internet. After putting the extreme into bridge mode everything works fine. The problem I have now is that I can't activate my web cam it says that i am blocked behind a firewall or router. I have been told that to get out from behind the router of firewall I need to be out of the bridge mode, but when I try this I loose my internet connection??? Anybody have a suggestion???

Warnercj7, Welcome to the discussion area!
I guess the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is connected to a modem of some type. It appears that the modem is operating as a router.
You will need to configure the modem/router so that the appropriate ports are forwarded through the modem/router to the web cam.

  • How do I configure my Airport Extreme to work in Bridge Mode and provide specific IP addresses to clients

My Airport Extreme is working with an Airport Express to wirelessly extend my wireless network.  Both Airports are configured in Bridge Mode per the instructions I found on Apple's support site.  I want to assign a specific DHCP address to a wireless camera that is in range of the Extreme, but I understand that the Extreme needs to be in DHCP Only mode to do this.  But if I change the mode to DHCP Only, the Extreme will lose contact with the Express.  How can I get both functions to work - wireless network extension and specific DHCP addresses?

Then what device is providing DHCP? Only once device per subnet should be the DHCP server. One should be DHCP and NAT and the other in Bridge mode for most home setups. The unit with DHCP and NAT should be the one connected to your cable or DSL and the other set in Bridge mode only extends your network.
On the wireless config page set whichever you're using to extend your network to "Extend a wireless network" and give it the details of the network to which you're attaching it.

Since then I have blinking yellow light on the AirPort and AirPort utility keeps promting for an edit. Suggests canging from NAT to "Bridge mode". Obviuosly U have some internet or this post would not go anywhere, my knowledge base is not enought to feel comfortable with changing the settings. Correctly editing can be tricky, so how do I make necessary changes?

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection?
The FIOS router needs to be in Bridge Mode to prevent the Double NAT error from occurring when two routers are both fighting with each other for control of the network.
Unfortunately, the likely problem from the FIOS side is that FIOS support will either tell you that their router cannot be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, or if it can, they will not tell you how to do it.
But, it could not hurt to check with FIOS to see if anything might have changed recently in this regard, so your first call would be to FIOS support.
If you cannot change the FIOS router to Bridge Mode, the alternate plan would be to change the AirPort Extreme to Bridge Mode. If you are using the Guest Network feature on the AirPort Extreme at this time, that feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.
