AEBS slows connection, increases pings, AEBS slows connection, increases pings

Hi all.
If I connect my computer directly to the cable modem, I get solid upload and download rates, and pings in the 80 - 100ms range (three or four bars on the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" network testing tool).
If I plug in my Apple Extreme Base Station, and then connect the computer via Ethernet to the router (so, not using WiFi), my upload goes way down, and my pings go into the 500ms range.
I've tried this with a NetGear router as well, with a similar effect.
The cable company says it's not their issue, since if I connect directly to the modem I get the service I'm subscribed for. They recommend turning off the firewall, but that's built-in to the AEBS when using NAT. So is there some configuration I can try to work this out? I'm assuming that this is not expected behavior?
Thanks,
Doug

It doesn't look like anyone replied, but I've been having similar problems for some time and haven't found a solution.
I'm a principal systems engineer w/25 yrs experience mostly in networking and unix so this problem is particularly perplexing.
I have a mac mini late 2011 that ran Snow Leopard, Lion, Lion Server, Mountain Lion, ML Server, a Netgear GW724Tv3 w/latest firmware, AEBS Gig-E 802.11n model, MBP 17" mid 2008 ML server,
Wired to Netgear: MBP 17", MBP 15", AEBS, iMac 27" Late 2012, Mac Mini.  All are full-duplex (top LED green=1G, orange=100M/10M), bottom LED is link.  First 4 have green/green, MacMini is orange (top LED turns green 3 times, then orange on initial connection).
I've tried setting the port for mac mini from auto/auto to 1000M, full-duplex fixed on both netgear and mac-mini (from Preferences and CLI) and neither make a difference, link never comes up in this setting.  The mini *used* to connect at gig-e some time ago, but at some point it stopped and was 100Mb everytime since.
The mini doesn't connect at GigE on AEBS ports either, everything else does.
I've tried booting the Mini using LinuxMint 14 with same results so it's a firmware/hardware issue.  Since the mini is the only device with this problem (everything else including newer macs work fine) it's a Mac Mini issue.
I'm going to revert the firmware to v1.8 and see if that fixes the issue, because there have been a few hardware updates to the mini since I first got it.   I didn't get applecare for this Mini, it's only 1.5 years old (I missed the cut off date) so if I can't prove it's a software issue, I'll need to pay for repairs.
As an option, I purchased a USB->Gig-E adapter, Thunderbolt->Gig-E adapter in the hopes it'll fix this issue.  USB won't perform better than 100Mb but the thunderbolt might if it can establish link.
I'll report back if anything fixes my issue.

  • New to networking . . . AEBS and slow internet connection

    Here's my set up:
    2 white 17" iMacs running MacOS 10.4.10. 1 15" Titanium Powerbook (2002) on 10.4.10 as well.
    I have Verizon Wireless which originally was getting speeds of well over 10mbps. Verizon had us update software (bad move) and it dropped to b/t 750kbps and 1mbps. The router they gave us is a Westell 327W.
    I got the AEBS (n version) yesterday and connected it to the router using the WAN port as directed. I also connected a printer to the USB slot. One iMac is connected to the AEBS using an ethernet cable. After the installation i found the internet connection to be painfully slow. Tests show a speed at no more than 256kbps! I am extremely upset and disappointed. I have not tried to file share yet and I don't believe I am having any interference problems. Are there any other possible solutions? Do I need a new router? I think I'm only paying for 1mbps so I'd be happy to get that speed. But as of now, downloads are not an option for me.
    Please, anybody with some sage advice, it would be greatly appreciated if you could pass it along to a network newbie. Thanks in advance.

    Well, I think I figured it out. I turned off my Westell router and unplugged it and left it overnight. Then plugged it in and turned it on in the Am. Came home form work and tested the speed . . . 1.5 - 3mbps! Wow! It really jumped over night. It's always the simplest things isn't it? Let's hope that's all!

  • Help : very slow connection speed with AEBS and iMac

    I connect to the internet using my newly purchased AEBS. I have a MacBook and an 24" iMac ( purchased in Nov 2007). My iMac showed very slow connecting speed of <1 MB/s download; with my MacBook placed just 1 foot from my iMac, the MacBook showed an amazing download speed of 20MB/s. If i connect the iMac to the AEBS using ethernet cable, it can get a very high speed.
    So, where is the problem??
    I am new to wireless, please help. I use iMac more than my MacBook at home.
    Actually, i did not touch the any of the advance setting of the AEBS.

    You know, I am experiencing the same problem. My wife's PC and iPhone are blazing fast, but my MacBook is accessing the internet at about dial-up speeds. Very frustrating and I haven't yet found the culprit.
    Anyone???

  • Slow wireless connection 802.11n AEBS and Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

    I have three Macs all currently connected wirelessly to the new 802.11n AEBS.
    Mac #1 - PowerMac G5
    Mac #2 - 17" MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo
    Mac #3 - 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo
    The wireless connection speed (when using the web browser) is fine for both Mac #1 and Mac #2 but noticable slower for Mac #3. All three Macs are sitting right next to each other. All three Mac are getting an excellent signal. All three Macs are running the same version of the OS. All three Macs have identical network setting (as far as I can tell).
    When connecting Mac #3 to the AEBS via an ethernet cable, performance is good. I've also tried configuring the channel manually in the AEBS to channel #1 but this did not help (seemed to help others in a different thread). Additionally, I ran the 802.11n enabler and performance was bad both before and after its installation.
    Any idea why the Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro would be performing differently?

    Ok eveyone. I did some digging and was able to get the network speed back with my Core2Duo machine. I put the Airport Extreme into Bridged mode and connected the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port. After that everything works great. for more information check out this lengthy thread...

    Apparently the new base stations have a few issues that need to be worked out so I'd consider this a workaround. There should be no reason to have to do this. Good luck.

  • Access to Hard Drive connected to AEBS - Extremely Slow

    I recently bought this Airport Extreme Base Station, model # MB763LL/A which brings me up disappointments one after another. First its my bad that I did not know AEBS does not support NTFS which forced me to format it to FAT 32 since I only has P/Cs that runs Windows 7. Its obvious that FAT 32 is not gonna allow me to transfer files larger than 4GB. Leaving this first problem aside, second one is the real headache for me. I connected my 2TB WD external HD to the AEBS and it is recognized by my Windows PC but every time I click that Drive or any sub folders in that, it takes awful lot of time. To be precise, it takes at least 2 mins to open a folder or a even for a right click. This is a terrible terrible problem. I can't wait 2 mins every time I click a folder. Do anyone know any fix for this problem or I will have to live with it.

    It is possible that the Win7 "Windows Search" feature may be the cause of the delays in accessing the AirPort Disk (an external hard drive attached to the USB port of an AEBSn)
    To disable Windows Search:
    o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
    o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
    o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
    o Press OK, close all windows and restart.

    One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

    To use the hotspot for any of those devices, I believe you have to switch to a postpaid account and plan. You can see the pricing for the available postpaid plans under the "Shop" area of the website.

  • Moved Hyper-V 2012 VM to Hyper-V 2012 R2 long ping respond, slow connection

    Hi,
    I have two Hyper-V server, one in 2012 and the other in 2012 R2. I use SCVMM 2012 R2 and begins to move all my VM(host 2012) to my new host 2012 R2. Some of the VM begins to have slow network connection. I try to upgrade the integrated Windows services but
    not luck, some vm are really slow with the ping respond (over 75ms). Other VM who's been migrated and works well responds in 1ms like the host itself. a new vm directly created on the 2012 R2 host is fine and respond in 1ms. So what can be the problem?
    Thanks

    Hi GuilaumeCRL,
    For troubleshooting please try the following items :
    a.  try to add a new NIC for the problematic VM
    (In the VM , open device manager --> view --> show hidden devices --> uninstall all devices under networkadapters -- shutdown the VM --> remove the old Vnic --> add a new one --> start the VM try to ping again )
    b.  try to  disable VMQ in the properties of  teaming members (physical NIC ).
    c.  try to keep the NIC driver up-to-date
    Hope it helps

  • High Packet Loss, High Ping and Slow Connection Ov...

    Hi There,
    I have been a customer with the BT unlimited broadband package for a little under two years and up until recently have had no real issues with the service. This was until around 3/4 weeks ago I noticed that the internet was very slow and certain online games or applications like Netflix would lose all of its quality or stop completely. At first I thought nothing of it and simply reset my BT Home hub router, and sure enough everything was back to normal. However after around 2-3 hours of moderate use (gaming online or watching Netflix) the problem surfaced again.
    Now I am lucky if I can get the entire way through a 40 minute TV episode before the quality drops and/or the service requires buffering. I have already contacted BT via the helpline and the service lady ran through the obligatory steps (turn off, wait 5 minutes, reset the home hub etc.) but she failed to understand that although rebooting the home hub does alleviate the problem initially, the symptoms of a slow connection, high packet loss and high ping always return within an hour.
    Four the last couple of weeks I have been trying to investigate the problem myself and I have done the following things:
    Tested the line using the master socket (no difference)
    Opened the ports on my firewall within the home hub (no difference)
    Directly wired in the computer instead of relying on the wifi (no difference)
    Tested for interference from neighbours wifi using inSSIDider office (it wasn’t, operating on different channels)
    Switched every device that requires internet off apart from the PC (no difference)
    So with all that in mind I am fairly confident that it is nothing within my house that has caused a significant reduction in internet quality.
    Now I have tried my best to display the problem I am having by recording the connection quality for the last 24 hours. The table below represents the condition and quality of the connection after leaving it a period of time without resetting:
    ADSL Line Status

    I have also checked if the bell wire was attached and it is not. My socket is of the new type with the inclusion of an inductor on the faceplate. My ADSL filters and modem cable already have the middle connecting pins removed so I don’t think it is a wiring problem, at least in my apartment anyway. I have also searched for problems with the exchange and they are showing green for my area. (Liverpool Central)
    I have just rang the quiet line and I do not appear to have any noise on the line. However, all I have is a cordless phone and I know that is not ideal for determining noise due to the radio frequency interfering with the phone speaker.
    Again thank you for you time on this issue.

  • Cannot ping AEBS remotely nor connect to USB disk

    Hello,
    I have an airport extreme and a MBP, and everything is working well within the network. I have a USB disk that is connected to the usb port, and I can connect to it over the local network fine (except in the cases when the disk decides to save energy and power itself down, in which case I have to unplug the disk and power it back on, but that is another story...). It seems like it is possible to connect to this disk over from outside the network, but there is practically no documentation on how to do this (it seems that Apple intended this to either work automagically or not at all).
    In the process of trying to get this setup, I have come across some other problems as well. Most importantly, I cannot ping my AEBS from a remote computer (e.g., my linux account at my university, which I ssh into). I have a dyndns account, and ping does not work with this (although it resolves the name correctly), and it does not ping with the actual IP either.
    With the airport utility, I have setup my MBP as the DNZ host (or default host in AEBS terms), so that all network traffic is directed to my laptop. Additionally, the MBP firewall has been disabled (I will re-enable and secure this once I get it to work with all the security down). I have also setup the apache webserver on the MBP, and cannot connect to this either remotely.
    Finally, the real problem is that I cannot connect to the usb disk remotely. I have tried both with my mac and with windows. I don't think this will work if I cannot even get the ping to work first, but when I DO get it working, is it possible to connect to the drive with both windows and a mac? I can connect locally with windows via samba, and with osx via afp, but do these work remotely the same?
    Thanks for taking the time to read this lengthy post .
    Adam

    Does the disk appear as a volume when you check using the Disk tab in AirPort Utillity?  In the example below, a WD Drive is connected to the USB port of an AirPort Extreme.
    If the drive does not appear here first, you will not be able to access it. Check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). FAT32 will also work as well.
    Some other formats like NTFS or exFAT might be able to be read when the drive is connected directly to a Mac.....but these formats are not supported with the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
    If the drive is formatted correctly, try using a powered USB hub. Connect the powered hub to the USB port on the Extreme, then connect the drive to the powered hub.

    used speed test and got 20 mbps, tested the modem and got the 98mbps...something weird as my system just stops and will not load to sites like google and yahoo but will always respond to sites like CNN...does this mean anything?

  • Slow connection/Bad ping while gaming.

    Okay, so ive had BT total broadband for some time now and its always been good for me, ive recently placed and order for infinity and waiting on that processing.  But the past few weeks even before christmas ive been getting quite a bad connection, nothing with my set up of the homehub has changed at all, on my adsl setting it says i should get around 3.5mb/s download and almost 1mb/s upload.  Im getting nowhere near this now, i get about 350kb/s max download and when im playing online games that used to run very well i get awful pings of over 100 and it just impossible to continue gaming in that state as you would imagine, ive done a silent line test and my line is silent.  Here are my adsl settings and speedtest, any help is greatly appriciated!

  • Increasing max-streaming-connections-per-session has slow acknowledge response?

    Our application is a Flex GUI with a WebLogic Server (BlaseDS) on a private network.  We were originally using IE 6, but have upgraded to IE 8.
    I am trying to use publish/subscribe messaging to monitor lengthy processes on the server and received incremental data.  With 1 such process everything works fine.  But we want to allow the user to subscribe to more than 1 message destination.  So I increased the "max-streaming-connections-per-session" (default is 1) in the services-config.xml file
         <channel-definition id="process-notification-streaming-amf"
              class="mx.messaging.channels.StreamingAMFChannel">
              <endpoint url=https://{server.name}:{server.port}/{context.root}/messagebroker/streamingnotificationamf"
              class="flex.messaging.endpoints.StreamingAMFEndpoint"/>
              <properties>
                   <user-agent-settings>
                        <user-agent match-on="MSIE" kickstart-bytes="2048"
                             max-streaming-connections-per-session="3" />
                   </user-agent-settings>
              </properties>
         </channel-definition>
    If we leave max-streaming-connections-per-session as the default value of 1 and try to subscribe to another message destination we get an error indicating limit has been reached:
         [BlaseDS]Endpoint with id 'process-notification-streaming-amf' cannot grant streaming connection to FlexClient with id '7FFC82DE-etc ' because max-streaming-connections-per-session limit of '1' has been reached.
         We upgraded to IE8 as documentation indicates IE8 allows for an increase of max-streaming-connections-per-session, where IE 6 is limited to 1.  But increasing max-streaming-connections-per-session does not quite solve the problem.  We have 3 consumers; consumer1, consumer2, consumer3.  For each of these consumers, we add event listeners for MessageAckEvent.ACKNOWLEDGE and MessageEvent.MESSAGE.
         We call consumer1.subscribe().  When we receive the acknowledge message, we call consumer2.subscribe() (likewise with consumer3)
         The problem is it takes over 2 minutes to receive the acknowledge message from the call to consumer1.subscribe().  (With max-streaming-connections-per-session set to 1, the acknowledge message is received in a few seconds.)
         So, increasing max-streaming-connections-per-session removes the error about reaching a limit, but it appears to come with a cost of a big delay in a long delay on the call to subscribe?  Or is there something we are missing?

    I guess I will answer my own question.  Hopefully this will be useful to someone else in the future...
    The problem was coming from IE being limited to 1 connection by the registry.  The solution can be found at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282402
    I manually performed the steps to update the registry, though microsoft provides a "Fix It"; MicrosoftFixit50098.msi
    One other key element was to make sure to have kickstart-bytes="2048".

    WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
    Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
    The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
    If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

  • MBP increasingly slower when not connected to network

    When connected to the network at work (either through WiFi or ethernet cable) my macbook pro works OK. However, when I am travelling or take my MBP home performance starts degrading to a point where launching something like Dictionary can take 15-20 seconds.
    I get a spinning beach ball when launching or closing applications, as well as when saving files. Typically when disk operations are involved.
    Originally, after reading some posts in this forum, I thought that it was a hard drive problem. However, I have used the tools that come with the installation disk and disk warrior showing no problems. In addition, the problem always sort out itself after rebooting while connected to the network at work.
    Trying to find the missing network could be a problem, but going through the logs in console I can not find anything like that. The other issue is that performance degradation compounds with time since being connected to work. I can' figure out a reason for this.
    Any suggestions pointing to a solution are most welcome.
    Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2GHz, 1.5GB RAM

    After playing for a while with the computer I think that I have at least found where the computer is wasting all this time.
    Using Console and checking system.log, I found several instances of "DirectoryService[46]: Active Directory: Could not determine closest Domain Controller from Site information in directory". I did use "sudo killall -USR1 DirectoryService" in Terminal to send debugging information to /Library/Logs/DirectoryService/DirectoryService.debug.log.
    Here I can see that every time I have a delay, the computer spends 25 seconds trying to reach a LDAPv3 server at work. So, it seems to be a misconfigured network problem, which I hope to sort out tomorrow.
