AEBS, speeds suddenly slow on my Mac only

The past few days, my internet at the house has been quite slow, where everything has previously gone fine.
I've tried a restart, to no avail, and ran a quick test with my iPhone on the same network, using iNetworkTest.com.
iPhone speed - 718kbs
Mac speed - 80kps
My phone was next to the Mac running the test, and as I said, previously have never had any problem. I've restarted the AEBS, Restarted the Mac, and have seen only minor improvement.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks

same here except Im getting 30kbps
I think I'll try disconnecting the aebs from power, waiting, then reconnecting - before I go ape with my ISP.

  • Macbook upload speed suddenly slow see history

    Hey there,
So my wife has the white Macbook from september 2008 and I have the Macbook Pro 15in from March 2009. We both share the same internet connection but after the upgrade to SL her upload speed has become painfully slow (see history) while mine is still the same speed.

The september 4th speedtest was BEFORE the SL upgrade and the tuesday is AFTER the SL upgrade, but then again I upgraded my Macbook Pro to SL and there has been no drop in my upload speed.
What to do? My wife is now using my Mac which is no good for any of us.
    Thanks

Select each of the items shown in RED in Activity Monitor. Click on the Quit icon in AM's toolbar then click on the Force Quit button. You only need to do this if you are unable to quit the programs in the normal way - Make the program the frontmost application, then press COMMAND-Q.
You also have two items in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder. They should not be there. You can remove them. HP should have updated software that replaces the older driver. I'm not sure about the TiVo item, but it should not be installed in that location.
You should check the Classroom Enrichment application for compatibility with Yosemite: See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
As for your backup needs I would suggest this:
Repartition the Seagate backup drive. This removes all the Seagate software. If you want more control over your backups than provided by Time Machine see the following options:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. You can download free trial versions of all six so you can try them out and decide on the one you prefer before paying for it. I am a big fan of Carbon Copy Cloner, but that does not mean it's your best choice.
Now given all the above consider that you can always use Time Machine. But until you get your computer straightened out I would refrain from making a backup. There's no point in restoring a malfunctioning backup made of a malfunctioning computer.

  • Import speeds suddenly slowed down

I was using Lightroom 4.4 Windows 64bit this morning to import photos.
I'd set off two batches of a hundered or so, one after the other and they both ran fne. I then switched to a different cataog, about 12000 files smaller, and tried to set off another import to a similar location with similar settings, of about 200 photos. This time the import took about 45 minutes, far longer than it ever has or should be.
This afternoon, I switched back to my usual catalog and tried to import 630 images (a big one I know), and that's taken over an hour to import 300! I don't know what has brought this sudden derease in import times, but would really like to know and how it can be fixed.
    Cheers,
    Alex

It's probably interference on the wireless part of your network. I suggest you try different channel. Go to the router's setup page > Wireless tab. Go play with the channels available in there. Make sure to set your SSID to something unique.

  • Suddenly-slow Ethernet on iMac Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me with a problem in which my iMac's Internet speed suddenly slows down.
I have an iMac connected with Ethernet to Earthlink's DSL service, which should be at 1.5Mbps for downloading. I seem to get about 1.3Mbps, but things suddenly slow to 0.10 or below and remain at that level.
The iMac is the 3GHz, 4GB ram, bought more than two years ago and now running 10.8.5 and fully updated. The DSL modem is Netgear model DM111PSPv2 bought three years ago, but not updated.
I watch the "Network" sub-screen in System Preferences. Normally, I have a green light next to "Ethernet", which says "Connected" (via DHCP). When I have the problem, the light goes yellow, the status changes to "No IP Address" and "Status of your network connection cannot be determined". Then, it appears normal again, possibly with the same IP address but not always.
Meanwhile, these errors are put to system.log:

(Yes, my upload speed is faster.)
I have run through all of Onyx's maintenance features; I have run the Apple Hardware Test suite, without any errors showing up. I also connected the same cable and modem to a Windows laptop without problem. (I tried setting up a wireless router for comparing wireless speeds, but wasn't able to get it working.)
A simple reboot isn't enough to fix the problem, but shutting the iMac down, leaving it for a bit, power-cycling and resetting the modem, resetting the iMac's SMC, and resetting the NVRAM as it reboots, sometimes gives me reasonable Internet speed, at least until this problem happens again.

  • My Time Capsule suddenly slowed my wi-fi network speed. Any clue?

Don’t bother with my strange printer name login. I did something wrong in the past and I am not able to change it. Anyway, my problem seems to be more common than I thought. My wi-fi network suddenly lost speed. Directly connected to the cable modem I get full dow/uoload speeds but through Time Capsule I only get 20x lower download speed (strange but uoload is less affected).
Tried almost everything already: soft and hard resets, channel changes, firmware updates and nothing changes.  I talked to the Apple support here in Brazil and seem to be lost on the problem. Any final solution for an apparently quite common problem? I am already considering to buy a new router…
    Thx,
    ECastro

Do yet another factory reset.. sorry!! But we need to start from a known baseline.
And tell us what version your TC is?? A1xxx from the rubber foot.
Setup wireless to meet SMB rules.. Wireless name is short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Set a different name for 5ghz. Same rules.
Set TC name also to the rules.
So you have for example.. TC named TC
    2.4gz named TC24ghz
    5ghz named TC5ghz
Use WPA2 Personal secuirity with password that is 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
Update and put the TC back into the network in either bridge or router mode.. those are the only suitable modes.. and TC has to be set to create a wireless network.
Now connect a laptop to the 5ghz wireless signal from the same room as the TC and measure your speed.
Test again over ethernet if the wireless is slow.. if both are slow the TC is faulty or simply doesn't work correctly on your kind of broadband. This is now happening with fibre connections.. Apple have not updated the routing part of the firmware for ages.. and are ignoring the issue. Get a different brand router and bridge the TC for TM use only.

    Seems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it.

  • G4 Quicksilver suddenly slowed down

This is my first ever Post and am fairly new to MAC's so please bear with me.
    The machine is a G4 Quicksilver(Digital Audio) 1GHZ, 1GB ram, 120 HD OS 10.5.5
It Used to run Pretty fast but all of a sudden Really Sloowed down. So slow that it could take 4 to 5 minutes watching the rainbow pinwheel to close out Safari. No programs were added. Did Repair Permissions, Ran Activity Monitor and showed the print out to several other Mac users. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary,Ran Apple Tech Tools, All passed. Did software update to 10.5.6 Ran MacJanitor, Ran Onyx(took about 2 hours)
Downloaded Istat widget and it showed 100% CPU usage when opening up Mozilla or Safari, Ran Rember(took about 5 hours) Showed 1GB ram with 733 free.
OK Nothing seems out of the ordinary?
Maybe needs a fresh load of the OS?
To play it safe I disconnected the 120HD and layed a Maxtor IDE 60GB(jumper set to Master) right on top and used the same cables. Tried to load 10.4 holding down the "C" key. It went fine until I had to pick a destination drive. The 60Gb Maxtor did not show up. Tried 3 other Maxtor, 1 Quantum and 1 Seagate. All IDE and jumper set to Master. None would show up.
Now, What am I doing wrong? I wanted to load a different OS on a different HD to see if it would get it back up to speed. No Luck. Unplugged all cables and reset the PMU button. No Luck. Tried to Zap the PRAM but it would only give me 1 start up chime.
ANY help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    coupde87, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
For someone new to Macs, you've learned troubleshooting fast. You have done most of the ususl things.
When troubleshooting, disconnect all external devices except your kbd & mouse.
    RAM seems to be OK.
How much free/available space is on your 120GB HD? An almost full HD will really slow things down.
Reconnect your 120GB drive. On one of the other HDs, set the jumpers to Slave (make sure you have the jumpers on the correct pins). Boot from the 10.4 installer. Now is the second HD recognized?

  • Sudden slow down in data transfer

I'm reading data from the hard disk on a Target PXI System (8106 RT) and sending it via Ethernet to a Host PC and writing it to its hard disk. I read a chuck of data from the Target, send it using TCP Write function. The Host uses the TCP Read function get the data and write it to its hard disk. Data is being transfer over a Gbit Ethernet. A total of 9 files ranging in size from 700 MB - 2 GB are being transferred. The process moves along at an adequate speed until it suddenly slows down to slower than a snail's pace in the middle of a file.
By using probes (see enclosures) I've been able to determine it take approximately 17 seconds between when the data is read on the PXI to when it is written on the Host. However, an iteration of the loop on the Target has increased to over 3 minutes. The CPU usage on the Target and Host are minimal, less than 1%. Memory usage on the Host is also small. Any suggestions on how to diagnose what has caused this sudden slow down?

I would recommend using smaller chunk sizes for your data transfers. I would recommend something inthe 10K to 50K range. I have done quite a bit of profiling for sending large amounts of data and I have found that it is better to send lots of smaller chunks rather than fewer large chunks. Also make sure that you are not automatically building up large buffers in your application if you are using shift registers. If you are reading from a file read the file in chunks and send the chuncks. Don't read the whole file in in one read. One experiment I ran resulted in a single read of a large file (2 MB or so) took something like 10 minutes to read it in one read. However it only took a couple of 100 ms to read the whole thing in 10K chunks. Same applies to wrinting very large chunks using the TCP write. You can easily get a timeout if you write 1 MB as a single write because the receiver has not consumed all of the data within the timeout period. However, multiple small writes will reset the timeout for each chunk written.

  • Why is Compressor way slower on 1 Mac Pro

This is about Compressor 3.5.3 but it's not really about the version.
I have two identical MacPros 2,1 models both running OSX 10.6.8 and Final Cut 7.0.3 and Compressor 3.5.3.
The only difference in the machine is one has 20 gigs of ram and the other has 24 gigs.
I'm capturing BetaSP tape, 30 min loads, and then converting it to ProRes LT with Compressor. Same settings in both instances of Compressor.
I load 12 captures into one machine's Compressor and hit submit. It finishes in a little over two hours.
I load only 5 captures into the other machine's Compressor and hit submit. It finished in over 5 hours.
They are both 8-core machines with the same processors and are identical otherwise. I can't believe that 4 more gigs of ram would make that much difference.
Also they are sourcing off identical raids as well and writing back to identical raids.  Why is one machine so majorly SLOW!

    Hi
How much free space is there on the Main Hard Disks ?
    • Exactly the same ?
    • one is 5Gb or less the other 100Gb or more
I never go less than 25Gb for work with interlaced SD-Video Quality
think that about 4-5 times more will work OK for full quality HD progressive - may be ?
What Processes are running in back ground ?
    • Time Machine
    • File Vault
    • Internet
    others
    NON on my Video Mac
else things that matters reg. speed and performance (for iMovie/iDVD - but are really general)
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move external/secondary hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • Dreamweaver suddenly slow?

Running CS4 on Mac OSX v 10.5.8, PowerPC G5, 1.5 GB RAM. Normally Dreamweaver runs fine -- not super speedy, but workable. Every now and then, it suddenly slows down. Today it's taking over a minute for the beachball to stop spinning after changing a margin for a div, or even to load a page. Everything else is closed except Firefox (and even rebooting and having nothing else open doesn't solve it.) MacFileCache-********.dat has been deleted, still no help.
When this has happened before, time has solved the problem. Except, of course, I have a final project due next week and I need to get some serious work done this weekend. I'll cry if I have to code everything by hand in a text editor... Help!
    Kathy A.

I had tried that the last time I had this same situation, with no improvement.
Since I posted, I have found one new thing that may shed light on the situation. It's only happening on pages where I have smart objects on the page. It doesn't happen every time I have a smart object, but the larger the original Photoshop files, the more likely it is to happen. I took one of the offending pages, removed all the images in a text editor (for other reasons), saved, and then accidentally opened it in Dreamweaver -- it worked like, well, a dream. Added back one smart object (small file size for the png, but large PS original file), and it took over 90 seconds to change the padding of a div on the page. Took the smart object back out, and back to normal.
The only thing I can think of at this spot is that 1.5 megs of RAM just isn't enough to work with large originals. If that's the case, I can live with the extra step of resaving png's out of Photoshop everytime I modify the original file. (Not going to throw more ram into this computer when I'm saving up for an Intel-chipped Mac.) If it's something else, I'd love to know what I'm doing that's causing it.

  • Will TheSims 3 Slow down my Mac?

    Hi everyone.
I have a lot of questions concerning The Sims 3 on a MacBook Pro. I had the Sims 3 on a Windows Vista and it was super slow. Here goes nothing!
         - I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro (late 2011)
         - Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
         - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
         - I got my MacBook Pro THIS Summer (2012) and I really don't want it to slow down, etc.
    Here are my questions/concerns:
         - If I download TS3 on my Mac, will it slow down my Mac? (ex. Safari, Word Doc's, iTunes, Photos, etc.)
         - If I install EP's (ex. Seasons, Pets, Generations) will that effect the speed of the game & my mac?
         - If I use 3rd party Custom Content what are the effects?
         - How does TS3 run on a Mac? Fast? Slow? Medium?
         - How do graphics look?
         - Do stuff packs effect the speed of the game?
         - Is installing TS3 recommended if you use your Mac for HW, emailing, school purposes?
I probably have more questions but I haven't thought of them haha. Please! Ask me questions about my mac, and tell me about how TS3 runs on your mac.
http://www.thesims3.com/game/systemreq This is the link for the system requirements for TS3. I'm not too computer savvy when it comes to things like this so any help would be nice!

I can't presently read thesims website.  If the Intel HD Graphics card is not mentioned on the specs, then it won't run on your Mac, or might run itself very slowly.  If it is mentioned, and so are cards that have much less MB on them for graphics, then chances are it will run OK on your Mac, and might be able to multitask with it.  If only that many MB or more are mentioned on the graphics card, don't expect it to multitask very well.  Generally speaking your hard drive will be your achilles heal in any software even if it is up to specs.  Don't let it get over 85% full.  This is from user experience and not based on any spec.  If you plug in the power to the computer, you will get more performance than if you run unplugged.  For better game support, you can check some Mac gaming pages*:

  • Download speed will slow to nothing. Must continually manually pause and resume to force the connection to the download to complete. How to fix?

Have recently tried to download multiple files from multiple locations. These files will show up as downloading in the download manager. After 5-10 seconds, the download will slow to a crawl. In the window for the download manager, it will state that the download still has a download speed. When reviewing the time and progress, as well as monitoring my actual inbound/outbound internet traffic, I can conclude the download does not have any actual download speed remaining (that is, 0 kilobytes/sec).
To complete the download, I must manually click on the file being downloaded, force it to pause and then force it to resume. This will cause the download to actually download again for about 5-10 seconds before the download manager states that the download speed is slowing down (when in fact it goes back to 0 kilobytes/sec). This process must be repeated until the file is fully downloaded.
Also observed is that there will suddenly be more of a connection, downloading just a bit of the file, before going back to 0 kbps. This will happen every so often and is much slower than manually pausing/resuming. If left to its own devices for long, it also has a chance that it will decide that the file is complete and report that it has the full file size of the download. Review of the actual downloaded file shows that the file is incomplete for the supposed size of the download.
This should not be an issue with internet usage. There is no inbound/outbound traffic for my connection when the download speeds hit 0kbps. Loading webpages during this time load fine, only the download is unstable.

Problem Solved!!! :) No need Of Any AntiVirus !
Got back into '''Firefox 5.0.1''' !!
    Its Working Great!

  • How can I speed up slow Maverick on MacBook Pro?

question or problem: How can I speed up slow Maverick on MacBook Pro?
answer or solution:  Per Apple Genius in Palo Alto,  CA
Maverick consumes almost my entire 4 GB of ram memory shown in Activity Monitor.
    Found under Applications-->Utilities-->Activity Monitor
Will purchase two 4 GB banks and install myself using inexpensive tools.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Time Machine (Time Capsule) INSANELY slow on one mac (millions of days to backup)

I have been experiencing impossibly slow speeds backing up to a Time Capsule from a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz i7 running 10.7.3 (and many previous versions of the OS). As you can see in the attached image, transfer speeds are slower than if I were to manually type out the data, with estimated completion times of over 80 million days.
The Time Capsule is "joining" my existing network.
    Things I have tried:
         - Connecting Time Capsule directly to router (three different ones, different cables)
         - Tried three completely different networks
         - Changing each network's channels, etc. to eliminate interference (my Web speeds are blazing, so this wouldn't be it anyway)
         - Renaming Mac (Sharing prefs) and Time Capsule with short, alphanumeric-only names
         - Restarting/reformatting Time Capsule
         - Buying a NEW Time Capsule as a last resort (turned out not to be)
I discovered that my MacBook Air, which I hadn't previously been backing up, works just fine and completed a wireless backup of several hundred GB in under 48 hours.
I am hesitant to do a wipe and install of my OS as this is my production computer for all of my video work, and I rely on many software packages and add-ons (which of course should be considered suspects).
Has anyone else experienced such insanely not-great speeds with their Time Capsule?
I am about to try backing up to a Thunderbolt drive to see if it still suffers.

I forgot to mention that one. I scoured the "All about TIME MACHINE" info, including 'D2.  Backup is slow or "hung"' to no avail. I have Time Machine Buddy (widget) installed as that page recommended, and I am not seeing any messages it says to look out for. The reports are all very clean w/ no alarm bells whatsoever.
