AEBSn - Unable to switch to 802.11n - Installation Bugged!

If you have a fairly recent Mac and an AEBS which supports 802.11n (the Gigabit or "802.11n" model) then you are supposed to be able to get 802.11n which has advantages over 802.11g.
I run late-2006 iMacs and these are 802.11n possible machines, providing 802.11n has been enabled. Downloading the "2007-002" enabler is not necessary, as the enabler will tell you. That's because a similar enabler is embedded into the AEBS installer on the supplied disc.
I assumed that the instal process for the Gigabit AEBS would handle things automatically in terms of getting everything moving at 802.11n speed or at least allow easy selection.
Nothing like it. This is a warning to others.
I noticed in my Airport Utility that I was running at 2.4GHz and not 5GHz which is for 802.11n. So clever me decided to simply switch and restart my AEBS. (An incentive too was to move above all the shops across the road. They seem to have channels 1, 6, and 11 working hard.)
Lost my connection to the AEBS as a result of that. The AEBS instal process did NOT update my computers to support 802.11n. Can be checked via Network Utilities. I hadn't thought to check first.
133MAC in Australia were very helpful - they spent almost an hour working through things his morning. Top Notch support!
Solution required the Airport instal to be rerun but a lot of other poking around first in order that the embedded 802.11n enabler would indeed run. And you'll need a LAN cable and possibly need to move one computer over to the AEBS!
Couldn't find an Apple Knowledgebase article on this problem with the Airport instal disc but I suspect it is a known issue.
(I had nothing quirky in my network setup / machines. All using the most recent system software updates, default settings in network and sharing preferences and so on)

Yes I know about all that as these are the very options presented in the pop-up menu on the relevant configuration tab.
What I'm saying is that selecting the 5GHz option resulted in my iMacs being unable to communicate with the AEBSn through WiFi - the 5GHz spectrum.
Leaving the AEBSn in "default radio mode" as you call it will mean that it will actually be using 802.11g at 2.4GHz due to its inability to use 802.11n at 2.4GHz or 5GHz. The Apple Tech people I spoke to recognised this.
Many purchasers of the AEBSn, like myself, will really want to take advantage of the 802.11n capabilities in the 5GHz spectrum. They wish to dedictae the AEBSn to 5GHz throughput and deliberately exclude 802.11b/g on their AEBSn. Let some other boxes take care of that in the 2.4GHz range.
For a little home office thing with a mix of old and new clients the default setting for the AEBSn is a very good thing as the admin doesn't really care about throughput.

I m having a slightly different problem with my AE.
Light is green, at all times, but suddenly my internet goes out ( not the signal, i have FULL signal and can still see the AE with airport utility) i just don t have conectivity, no pings no nothing...
THis stays the same until i reboot the AE itself, nothign else works, like turning airport card on macbook on and off etc..
I was running firmware 7.3.2, and downgraded to 7.3.1 to see if the problem persists, but this is strange, it just started this morning, and has been happening every 20 min .
    Anyone have the same problem?

Just to update on the situation, the downgrade seems to have fixed the issue for me.
Maybe its a problem with 7.3.2 that affected my router for some entropic reason

  • Very poor 802.11n performance

I'm having difficulties with my time capsule. The performance seems very erratic. Due to me having also having a powerbook I've so far run it in compatible mode.
But the many problems regarding signal strength and a stable throughput struggling to keep above 485 kb/s prompted me to move the Time Capsule closer to the Powerbook so I could hook it up via cable and completely switch to 802.11n 5ghz, connceting the other computers wirelessly.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The performance is laughable, I get a mere 5000 kb/s down (internet based test) whereas I normally (2.4 ghz n/b/g compatibel) i get just under 2 MB/s.
Sending files to and from a connected harddrive is also very very very slow.
What is wrong with the Time Capsule? Is it interference from the (bastards) around me that all have their routers setup to automatically chose channel?
Is my time capsule broken? Is my computer broken? What is wrong?
I'm close to returning the device.

    I've just completed an experiment.
Two iMacs side-by-side. One with Airport Utility 5.4.1 ("new"), second with Airport Utility 5.3.1 ("old"). Time Capsule with firmware 7.4.1.
    Initial tests for connection Rate:
    "New" average about 122
"Old" average about 232 (about twice the Rate)
Installed Airport Utility 5.4.1 on "old" iMac.
    New tests for connection Rate:
    Both averaging about 116
To me this suggests an effect of the "upgrade" to 5.4.1. But could this be the case? I'm not going to downgrade the firmware quite yet until I rule this and any interference issues out.

  • Complex problem: 802.11n, Bluetooth, Iphone 4 and Magic pheripherals...

    Hi folks,
    My hardware:
    - Macbook Pro with Apple LED Cinema Display
    - Magic Mouse, Trackpad and Wireless Keyboard
    - Time Capsule as WiFi Router
    - Apple TV
    - Iphone 4
    - Airport Express as WiFi printer connection
    My problem:
    - As known, time machine backup causes lags on BT devices when WiFi is run in 802.11n (b/g compatible) and switching to 802.11n only (5GHz) solves the problem. I solved the problem with my WiFi printer (Samsung 4500W, 802.11b/g) by connecting it to my Airport Express.
    - The persisting problem is that my Iphone 4 only supports 802.11n (2,4GHz) and this frequency seems to still interfere with BT so at this point I have to live with the following: Using my Iphone as a remote in my Apple-powered network with lags on BT peripherals OR using BT peripherals in a 802.11n (5GHz) environment without using my Iphone 4 in the WiFi.
Does anyone know a solution to this?
And if the guys from Apple read this:
    - Please update my Iphone to 802.11n (5GHz)
    - Please remove the f...... mouse acceleration in Lion ;-)

When connected to the wi-fi network, on your iPhone go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Select the right facing arrow in a blue circle icon to view the wi-fi network settings. Select Forget this Network at the top.
Follow this by rejoining the network.
If no change after this, on your iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset and select Reset Network Settings. This will erase all wi-fi network settings for all wi-fi networks you have connected your iPhone with and will require re-joining every wi-fi network you have access to including your own.

  • AirPort Extreme 802.11n as a wireless router and local network switch?

    Good afternoon,
I'm curious if its possible to have the APE in wireless network mode and connect systems via hard line as well?
I have an AirPort Extreme 802.11n set to "Create a Wireless Network" mode that is attached directly to a cable modem for internet connectevity. My issue is that while all wireless devices (several iPods, two iPhones and three laptop computers) connect to the APE without issue (and have internet access), when I try to plug in a Windows 7 desktop computer via one of the ethernet jacks, Windows is unable to connect and shows the network as "unidentified," spitting back a private IP address as opposed to a local LAN (this behavior repeats for an Ubuntu Linux box as well).
Not sure if the APE is misconfigured, this is a Windows 7 issue or if its improper use on my part (though this also precludes me from connecting a gigabit switch to the APE).
    Thank you,
    Nathan

Properly configured, the AirPort should provide both wired and wireless network client with Internet access.
At this point, I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

Well, the Airport Express is also compatible with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. If your Wii is unable to connect to the wireless network, I recommended changing the wireless security of your network.
Open Airport Utility, select your Airport Express and click Edit. Navigate to the Wireless tab and change your security from WPA2 Personal to WPA/WPA2 Personal. Then click Update on the bottom right.

  • Unable to Connect Using New AirPort Express 802.11n

My mom purchased an AirPort Express 802.11n wireless router (AX) and I, as the designated "technology guru", was tasked with setting it up. Unfortunately, I am having problems out of the box.
When I connect it to the wall, it is found by AirPort Utility, but when I try to set it up, it is unable to connect to the wireless network. ("An error occurred joining the selected wireless network." "An error occurred, close the configuration window and try again.") This is annoying because I have an older AX and it was true to the "it just works" Apple mantra. It is also annoying because the error message has a comma splice.
Feeling pretty proud of my "technology guru" title, I come here to see what I could be doing wrong. I try connecting the computer directly to the router via ethernet cable. With this, I am able to setup my wireless network. I am still not able to connect to it. Additionally, once the AX has been configured, the AirPort Utility can't find it.
I tried updating firmware to 7.5.2. I've tried downgrading to 7.3.2. I've tried hard resets, soft resets. Every tip I could find I have tried. Please help. My self-confidence is wearing out.
Is it time for a call to Apple or a visit to the Apple Store?

Are you trying to configure the Express to "join" the wireless network?
If yes, the message you are receiving is likely an indication that you do not have the correct security settings selected for the Express. Unless the security settings between the wireless router and Express match up exactly, the Express will display the error that "an error occurred, etc".
The easiest way to confirm if you have this problem is temporarily set the main wireless router to "no security" and try to connect the Express that way. If you can connect, then you know that it is a security issue.
Please tell us the exact setting for security that the wireless router there is using and we'll try to give you some more ideas.
The Express will connect. It's just a matter of finding the right settings.

  • Unable to connect to AE 802.11n through airport utility -despite resetting

    Hi all,
I do realize that there are a number of threads adressing what seems to be my problem, but none of the solutions have worked for me.
I have a 2 year old AE 802.11n that has given me flawless wireless network for a long time now. I have for some time been unable to connect to it and change settings through the Airport utility, for example I was unable to update to the 7.4.1 firmware, so I am (was) running 7.3.2.
Today I wanted to setup a external hard drive connected to the aiport, so I needed the Airport utiltiy. After numerous tries, including a direct connection through an ethernet cable, I was still unable to connect. I was getting the infamous 'Make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6728)' error message, despite being able to detect the base fine.
It seemed that resetting the airport had helped a lot of other people, but Alas!! I used soft reset, hard reset and factory reset (presseing the reset button while plugging in the power), and still no luck. The only change is that now my network is no longer working (not surprising), and the base name has changed to factory default. What puzzles me is that Aiport utility states that the base is running the 7.3.2 firmware, while I am certain that it came with version 5.something as factory default. I have just left it without power for a few hours, and still the same.
So, how do I connect to my beloved AE again?
    Thanks!
Oh, and I have the same problem on my 3 year old iMac and my brand new MacBook Pro....
    Nikolaj 'getting desperate' HTP

    I found a workaround:
I removed my new (5.4.1) version of Airport utility, and re installed 5.3.2 (downloaded here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/airportutility53 2forleopard.html)
I could then access the Base, setup my AirDisk, update the firmware, and AFTER the firmware update, reinstall Airport utility 5.4.1. It seems that everything is working now.

  • Extending a network with two AEBSn 802.11n base stations

Problem: Laptop on remote Airport Extreme (n) doesn't get internet, but can see entire network.
I have set up 2 new Airport Extreme's (n). One is connected to the cable modem and set to "create wireless network" and "Share a public IP address" . The other is about 80-100 feet away and set to extend the network.
A PowerBook G4 is connected to the remote Airport Extreme and gets an IP address correctly, and can connect to a computer on the primary Airport Extreme. Transfer rates from the remote laptop to a computer on the primary Airport Extreme are strong (15-30 Mbit).
According to the Airport utility, link speed between the two Airport Extreme's fluctuates between 104 and 130 Mbit.
The problem is that the computer connected to the remote Airport Extreme can't get out to the internet. Computers connected to the primary Airport Extreme get a very fast connection to the internet. What am I doing wrong?
Airport Extreme 802.11n   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   AEBSn

    Let's double-check your AEBSn's settings...
AEBSn - Extending a wireless network Setup
    - If practical, place the base stations in near
proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once
done, move them to their desired locations.
    - Open AirPort Utility and select the base station
that will connect to the Internet.
    - Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or
double-click the base station to open the
configuration in a separate window. Enter the base
    station password if necessary.
    - Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click
    Wireless.
    - Choose “Create a wireless network” from the
Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow
this network to be extended” checkbox.
    - Next, select the base station that will extend this
network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu, or double-click the base station to
open its configuration in a separate window. Enter
the base station password if necessary.
    - Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the
Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the
network you want to extend from the Network Name
    pop-up menu.
    - Enter the base station network and base station
    password is necessary.
    - Click Update to update the base station with new
    network settings.

    Extreme 802.11n Networks.
I followed the exact instructions above with one AEBSn connected to the DSL modem and "creating the wireless network", and a second AEBSn "extending the network". Depending on the location (1st or 3rd floor), my PowerBook G4 connects perfectly to the AEBSn with the stronger signal.

  • Switching from FIOS to Comcast with 802.11n roaming network

    Current FIOS setup.
FIOS ONT --> ActionTec MI424WR (Router) --> (Private network) LAN (Airport Extremes 802.11n, Time Capsule, Airport Express 802.11n, 802.11g + WDS) --> Computers and other devices

Motorola SBG 6850 --> Public Network WAN --> (Airport Extremes 802.11n, Time Capsule, Airport Express 802.11n, 802.11g + WDS)
From the Early 2009 Airport Networks Design manual...
"Connect all of the AirPort Extreme Base Stations and Time Capsules to the same subnet on your Ethernet network. "
I have no control over the IP addresses assigned to the Airport access points under the Comcast scenario.
The DHCP function on the SBG6850 has been disabled by the ISP. Factory resets and custom configurations get over-written when the modem connects to the ISP and downloads a new configuration via TFTP.
Adding a router makes little sense as the Airport devices already have that capability.
Has anyone solved this type of a problem before?
    All input is much appreciated.

Connect the Modem to the router on Internet Port and Desktop Computer to the router on Ethernet Port1...Now,reset the router for 30 seconds,Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now,check the ip address...
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then,Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button. Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".Click on enable and Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router .... If getting Valid Ip .... try going online...If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address .....
