Aequivalent to 'ink limit' (InDesign) or 'total area coverage' (Acrobat)?

Hello. I need to sort out parts of my image that contain an ink total higher than a certain percentage (like 300, 330 or so, depending on printer, paper ). I know I can use threshold to isolate the darkest parts, but that isn't as precise as the tools provided by InDesign and Acrobat. I'm quite confident Photoshop does offer such an option, but I can't seem to find it. I'm sure there's many who know. Apologies for the newbie question, and thanks.

Maybe what you are looking for is this...in the Info palette click on the little Eyedropper icons to get a dropdown menu that lets you set the eyedropper to Total Ink, which you can use to get readings off the image.
To set the limits,Edit>Color Settings. In the CMYK dropdown all the way at the top choose Custom CMYK. There you will get all the settings.
But I think (and someone else can correct me) if you have a usual Color Profile specified, this is not necessary.

  • Setting Total Area Coverage (TAC or Density) in InDesign

Is there a way to set the Total Area Coverage (TAC or Density) in the Export options from InDesign?
I feel that the color management tools relate to elements created within InDesign and not placed images.
My printer requires a PDF/X-1a:2001 compliant PDF with a TAC of 240% maximum.
Is this possible using from within InDesign, or do I have to address 'Placed' images within Photoshop or Illustrator?
Thank you for your response, in advance.

InDesign's colour management can be set to affect placed content as well as native content.
Do you have (or can your printer provide, or suggest) a CMYK profile that has 240% TAC?

  • Maximum total area coverage evaluation in cs5

Can anyone tell me if Photoshop CS5 has a Total Area Coverage feature for CMYK images comparable to Indesign and Acrobat’s?

  • Total Area Coverage below 200?

Is there anyway to change the total area coverage to be below 200% in the output preview window?
We recently changed newspaper stock and I need to be able to see ink density warnings for 165% or higher. 200% seems to be all that Acrobat allows- Any way to alter this?

    Hi hdones,
Can you please share the file with me at < [email protected] > so that I can have a look.

  • PDF Ink Limit change on Export From ID

    Hi
I am having an issue where ink limits on an exported PDF do not match the limits in PS and ID.
I am using a Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27 working space in all applications with colour managment policies set to "Off".
Iink limits in ID are fine (max of say 298), same in PS but after exporting to PDF the ink coverage goes above 300%.
    Output settings are set to:
Colour Conversion: Convert to Destination (preserve numbers)
Destination: Working CMYK - Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27
PDF/X: Output intent Profile Name: Working CMYK - Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27
    Where am I going wrong?

At the moment I am simply performing a test with one image on a blank page. The parts that are showing are the darkest areas e.g. black table legs etc. I have thoroughly gone over the exact pixels with the eye dropper in PS and the max ink limit on the problem pixels (according to Acrobat) have 297% coverage at most.
I am totaly aware that the ink limit preview is just that....it alerts me to any pixels that are over the specified limit. That is kind of my point. It shows no pixels are over 300% coverage, yet after I export the file and use the output preview screen in Acrobat, the ink limit preview shows the limit to now be over 300%.
No transparency or effects are being used.
    To summarise:
InDesign - Ink limit below 300%
Acrobat - Ink limit above 300%
Photoshop - Ink Limit below 300% on areas that Acrobat says are over 300%

  • Total Ink Limit Question??

I recently upgraded to IDCS4 (v6.0) on a Mac.  I am having a problem with total ink limits not agreeing between Photoshop and Indesign.
I prepared a CMYK document in PSCS4, embedded a GRACoL#1 profile, and adjusted the image so my total ink limit is 300 in the darkest shadows.  Then, I placed that image into IDCS4.  My color settings in ID are set to the exact same CMYK profile, and my policies are set to honor the embedded profile, Relative Colorimetric, BPC.  When I check the TAC in ID, it shows that I have over 320 in some areas, but that is not the case in the original Photoshop file.  Is Indesign converting to the default document profile and forcing the blacks to hit the 320 TAC in the GRACoL profile even though they are the SAME profile?  It doesn't seem to matter if I set CMYK to Preserve Profiles, OFF, or whatever in Color Settings.
If it is just assuming the GRACoL profile for readout, then I will just go by what is in Photoshop, which I trust more than I do Indesign.  But, I don't want to have some number conversions going on behind the scene, pumping up my ink limits.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Lou

Well....I thought it made sense, but I am not so sure after more playing around.
I reopened my placed TIFF documents in Photoshop, set my darkest blacks to 300 TAC, and resaved them without any profile.  When I relink these files to my Indesign document (files have no embedded profile), I get different ink limits than what shows up in Photoshop.
For example, if I set ID Color settings to "Emulate ID2 CMS OFF", those same blacks read out as 266 TAC in the Separations Preview box, even though they are set to 300 inside Photoshop. That makes no sense to me.  Color management in ID is off and the file I placed has no tag!    What is that about?
If I turn ON color management in ID, set the default CMYK profile  Gracol2006_Coated 1v2, (which has TIL of 320), set CMYK to Preserve Numbers (Ignore Linked Profiles), the same placed file shows 320 TAC in the black areas, even though I have placed an untagged file.
And if I set up a Proof Preview to US Web Coated SWOP v2 (which has a 300 TIL), the readout in ID shows 300 TAC in the blacks.
So, it looks to me like ID is doing calculations of its own to determine TAC.  It either uses the document default if no other profile is selected, (even if the file is untagged), or the proof condition if enabled.  With color management turned off in ID, who knows what it is doing.
BTW, if I check the "Simulate Black Ink" checkbox when setting up a Proof Preview, the ink limits do drop closer to what is in Photoshop, since no black remapping is taking place, but TAC still does not match.
I am probably missing something here, but if not, this is as useless as tits on a bull, and seems rather screwed up.  What am I missing?  I'm not new to color management and have been doing this for years, but I am new to CS4.
    Thanks, Lou

  • Total Credit Limit exceeded, but orders are still credit approved

    Hello,
I'm encountering the following issue for one customer:
    Total credit limit - $100,000
    Individual limit - $80,000
The customer has two credit control areas.  For credit control area 1 (CCA1):
    Credit Limit - $80,000
Credit Exposure - $110,000 (i.e. credit exposure exceeds credit limit for not only CCA1, but for the entire customer credit limit)
For credit control area 2 (CCA2):
    Credit Limit - $20,000
Credit Exposure - $10,000 (i.e. credit exposure does not exceeds credit limit for the CCA2, but entire credit limit is still exceeded)
When I enter a sales order in credit control area 2 for this customer, the credit status is approved, even though the total customer credit limit has been exceeded.  I am wondering if this is standard SAP behavior.  If so, what's the point of a total credit limit if it doesn't reject an order where the total credit exposure exceeds the total credit limit?
Risk category and all other config for the credit control areas match in OVA8.  If this is standard behavior, or if there is a configuration element turned off that should be turned on, I would greatly appreciate the help.  Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
Pls check if the risk category is assigned in FD32 and the relevant combination exist in "Define Automatic Credit Control".
    Thanks,
    Mauryan

  • I only want to lower ALL images in my pdf to 270 total area ink coverage.

I only want to lower ALL images in my pdf to 270 total area ink coverage, without affecting anything else. I cannot import my customer photoshop color profile, as it is csf, not icc. Can I use or make some kind of action to take an entire pdf and lower all ink coverage in all photos on all pages to 270?

I see you’re in Tiger and I’m running Leopard. If I remember correctly, in Tiger it’s something like Print > PDF > Quartz Filter > Gray Tone. In Leopard, it”s
Print > PDF > Open PDF in Preview > Save As > Quartz Filter > Gray Tone.
If Quartz Filter doesn’t directly follow PDF there may be a menu that says Filter and then Quartz Filter. My memory, to quote Henric, is “porous.”

  • Controling Ink Limit while using effects and stroke and etc.

    Hello!
I've got intresting (for my opinion) and important question (for ones of printing press).
Usually there is restriction for Total Ink. Personaly for me it almost always 300. So it's if design or elements of it with overlay is made in Indesign then all those shadows, stroke with 100%K can produce much Total Ink.
For example you can have cyan:100%;yellow:100%;magenta:100%;black:0%. Now if above it is element with some color with stroke black:100% (default one) then Total Ink = 400!!! And it's enough if object itself with Total Ink to have stroke 100%K to make problems.
And, of course, all those effects can produce Total Ink much more that legit.
So, is there some normal way to control Total Ink in Indesign CS5? Or maybe there is something in CS6?
    Thanks.
P.S. If question is hard to understand i can try to explain it some other way (english isn't my native language)

The choice of an output profile will control total ink for color conversions, but there is nothing in ID that prevents you from exceeding the limit with objects or colors you build in CMYK in the document. Nor is there a total ink flag in Live Preflight.
I think most printers would tell you that it's easier to contol a build with some percentage of black and reduced densities of  CMY (gray component replacement) than your 100/100/100/0 mix, so that's one thing you can try. It's also not much of a problem, or so I'm told by my printers, to exceed the ink limit by perhaps as much as 20% in a small area like a frame stroke, though I also try to avoid that.
It's easy to find areas of too much ink, though. Open the Transparency Preview panel and there is a Total Ink warning highlight available. It highlights total ink at or above the value set, so I would set it at perhaps 305% in your case.

  • How can you set ink limit preferences in preflight?

I'm using InDesign CS4 and starting to like the new Preflight panel, but now want it to check my ink limits. I have a printer that wants no more than a 275 on coated stock and no more than 225 on uncoated. Thus I'd like to set up a profile for each so InDesign checks for it in Preflight, basically so I don't forget! I know I can set this on the 'Ink Limit' panel, but unless I remember to check it, it goes unnoticed were as if it was in preflight it would remind me.
    Does this make sense?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

The Golden Rule of printing: there is Fast, there is Cheap, there is Good. If you are lucky you'll find someone who can do two of the three at the same time, but never all three.
Are you really saving any time or money by having to jump through all these hoops to provide files this guy can print? Do you even care what your output looks like -- that's a major way potential clients judge you?

  • Subreport totals are not displayed correctly in Preview

I'm using Crystal Reports 2008.  I have a subreport that sorts hiearchically.  It is placed in the Report Header of the main report.  Within the subreport, it has calculated totals for each hiearchy grouping.  When ran, those totals are incorrectly displayed in the Preview;  however, when I click on the subreport, those totals are displayed correctly in the preview of the subreport.  Also,  if I go to the subreport design, pretending I'm editing the subreport, then go back to the main report preview, those totals are correct.
Has anyone experienced this issue?  Please provide help/advise.  Thanks.

Shwu, The subreport does not process any value based on the main report. I also observed that if the group extends to next page, the totals are incorrectly displayed.  I have both 'Keep Group Together' and section 'Keep Together' selected, but still the data extends to next page.  The subreport is sorted with 'Hierarchical Grouping'.  For example, below 2 lines are printed at bottom of a page:
    North America
        Sales department
then Crystal prints the rest of departments belong to North America onto next page as:
         Marketing
         Consumer
             Government
             etc.
I was hoping if I could get Crystal to not print the group if there's not enough space on the page, but rather print on next new page, the incorrect totals would go away.  Any idea how I would do page break for hierarchical groupings?

How to digitize a physical book (scanned pfd file) to a kindle format with Indesign? pages are 8x11.
I have all scanned pages, but the kindle format offered on the Indesign options is bigger. What should I do? Do I start a book from scratch with the scanned pictures or do I leave the pages with the white space on them with the kindle option of Indesign.

    Hi barbaraegarza,
For your situation, you could try using alternatives like PDF4Kindle, Calibre, or Papercrop.  But based on what I've read and my quick experiment, depending on the complexity of  your PDF, it may be more effort than it's worth to try to convert a PDF into a legible Kindle, ePub, or any other e-reader file.
I did a quick test on Calibre with a 16-page PDF that contained multiple columns and images.  The results were illegible!  It ran the lines from each column together, making the text difficult to comprehend.  Calibre explains why PDFs are difficult to convert -- Ebook Conversion — calibre User Manual.  I have not tried the other two applications that I suggested above, but I would assume that the results would be very similar.
I don't know what kind of results you got when you converted it in InDesign, but if your first test turned out fine and it was just the size of the file that you are concerned about, you could use Acrobat to reduce your PDF's file size and convert it to the Kindle format in InDesign again.
    Hope this helps.  Good luck!

  • Numeric field limit length to visible area

I have a pdf saved as Dynamic XML Forms with a numeric field checked to limit length to visible area, but the "limit to visible area" option does not work. If save the same pdf as Static Form works fine.
Can someone provide an example or tell me how to solve it?
    Thanks in advance

In the change event you can place the following script (Java Script)
         if(xfa.event.newText.length >maxLength)xfa.event.change = "";
Replace the "maxLength" with the maximum numbers you want the user to enter..
This way it can stop the user to enter more characters after reaching the maxLength.
