AEX-n and AEX-n (Gigabit)

I screwed up and bought the AEX-n before the Gigabit ethernet was included. However, this is not all bad because I think the additional base station will help with the wireless range.
Okay- here's what I'm hoping to accomplish:
I have the AEX hooked to a quad core PC server and BB modem. There are 4 laptops in the house, an Apple TV, and an Airprort Express. With all of these wireless clients and the absurd amounts of data being transfered, I want to run Cat 6 cable to the rooms for the laptops and Apple TV. (The Apple TV takes 3-5 minutes to open library) The wireless signal strength is low in the back bedrooms of the house as well.
If I add a AEX with gigabit ethernet, I think this will help solve these problems. But will it work?

Yes you can use the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to connect clients.

  • AEBS (802.11n) and AEX WDS Headaches

I've been trying to get my Airport Express to extend the wireless network set up through my Airport Extreme Base Station using WDS and have had nothing but headaches.
I've been able to use the AEBS to connect to the internet without problems, and can use AirTunes on the AEX—great fun. Unfortunately, the family room—where the AEX is—is at the opposite end of the house and on a different floor from where the AEBS is, and so WiFi reception there is less than spectacular. I want to extend the network—after all, I have the equimpment, right? But every time I try to set up a WDS, everything goes loopy.
When I try to turn on WDS, one of two things happens: either the AEX disappears from the list of base stations, and the AEBS starts flashing yellow, giving me an error that "no WDS peer is available"; or both stations are in the list, green lights merrily on, but the internet connection becomes incredibly sporadic—off three minutes, on one, etc.... Eventually the connection just disappears. This is true not only from the G5, but from the iBooks as well, whether wired or wireless. The WiFi network shows up fine, the ethernet connection is still strong, the various components on the LAN are pingable... But the connection to the internet is gone.
The two AirPort base stations are connected via ethernet (cat 5e) through a NetGear gigabit switch (the AEX connects through a Netgear gigabit hub that it shares with the family TiVo... and hopefully one day with either a Mac Mini or an Apple TV). My main computer is a PowerMac G5 1.8GHz single CPU with 4GB of RAM running 10.4.10, and connected to the network via both ethernet and AirPort. I have two iBooks (and occasional visitors) that use the network (wired and wireless), as well as the TiVo and a PS2.
Peripheral-wise, the AEBS has a printer and a hard drive connected to the USB port via a powered USB hub. The AEX is hooked up to my home theater system (such as it is) using TOSlink cable, and has AirTunes enabled. I'm using AirPort Utility 5.0.
I've set the network up according to the directions. The AEBS has WDS turned on, "Allow this network to be extended" is checked, it's set as the main base, and the AEX's ID is included in the remotes list. The AEX is using the same network and password, also has "Participate in a WDS Network" selected; it's set as a WDS Remote, and has the AEBS set as the main. The AEBS is the DHCP and NAT server for the network; it is connected directly to the DSL modem (a SpeedStream 5360). The AEX is set to connect to the internet through DHCP—it gets its address properly from the AEBS.
I've had to turn WDS off yet again to post this message.
    Help????

Set up a roaming network. WDS is for wireless coneection between the base stations.
    To set up roaming:
1 Connect all of the AirPort Extreme Base Stations to the same subnet on your Ethernet
    network.
2 Give each base station a unique name.
3 Give each base station the same network name and password.
4 Set up the base stations as bridges, following the instructions in the previous section.
If you want one AirPort Extreme Base Station to assign IP addresses using DHCP, also
    do the following:
1 Set up one base station to act as the DHCP server.
2 Set up the other base stations as bridges, following the instructions in the previous
    section.
The base station acting as a DHCP server can also receive its IP address via DHCP from a
server on an Ethernet network or from a cable or DSL modem connected to an Internet
    service provider (ISP).

  • Tools for analyzing optimal placement of AEBS and AEX in WDS

I have an AEBS-n (main) and AEX-n (remote) WDS network. I have a set of Macs, some are 802.11n and some are 802.11g devices.
I get very poor reception in one part of my house. I am trying to determine the best placement of my remote AEX device or whether I should get a additional one.
Are there any analysis tools that would tell me the following:
    - This mac is communicating with which AE device at this throughput
    - If I move my laptop, the tool will tell me my new throughput
    - If I roam, it would tell me when I switch to another AE device
    Thanks.
    --Griff

The simplest and no cost tool would be iStumbler. You can use it to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at various points to determine the best placement. Typically a SNR of 20+ dB is what you would be looking for.

  • Cisco 5 port and 8 port gigabit unmanaged switches

I am looking for 5 port and 8 port gigabit unmanaged switches in Cisco. Please provide the BoM for the same. As per my understanding the following switches can suffice the requirement (SG100D-05 and SG100D-080) however I am not sure about the DC power, whether they can be used in normal AC environments.

The SG100D-05 and SG100D-08 are too small and their power requirements are too low to justify building an AC power supply into them like the larger SGx00 switches have, so they are wired to accept DC power and use an external power adapter (included) for connection to an AC environment.
There are really no optional components to these devices, so the BOM would be as follows:
    5-port SG100D swich: SG100D-05
    8-port SG100D swich: SG100D-08

  • AEX, DLink and PBookG4 Wireless Broadband

I use an Airport Express and D-Link ADSL router with a G4 Powerbook. I am having a lot of problems conecting to the internet. If I use the ethernet cable direct into my lap top from the router it connect immediately. When I plug router cable into Airport Express I am getting a conflict error message advising an IP address is already in use by the AEX. I get brief moments of connection to the Web but then the conflict appears and the connection drops out. I have done factory resets of the AEX and created a new network. The other odd thing is that when I create a new network in the AEX Setup utility it doesnt then appear in the Network options - it still only has Test and Automatic. Anyone gat any ideas. I'm a recent convert to Mac and not particularly impressed with this aspect of the kit.

    1. Do a factory reset of the Airport Express per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
    2. plug the Airport Express ethernet port into one of the LAN ports on the router.
    3. pull power to the router and unplug the Airport Express from power for a moment. Then plug the router back into power, then plug the Airport Express back into power. Within a minute the Airport Express status light should go solid green. If it does not, post another message.
    4. connect to your Airport Express wireless network by selecting it from the Airport menu of your Mac. It will be called by its default name "Apple Network xxxxxx".
    5. run the Airport Admin Utility. Select your Express and click Configure. Then...
    - under the Airport tab, rename your Airport Express from the default name to one of your choosing.
    - under the Network tab, uncheck the box next to "Distribute IP addresses"
    - under the Music tab, make any changes you wish
Update settings to the Airport Express.
Now reconnect to the Airport Express wireless network by selecting it (by its new name) from your Mac's Airport menu. That should do it.

  • AEX, airtunes, and brand new mac book  pro

have been using my AEX as a router, as well as, to play music thru airtunes for two years via my older powerbook. last week i purchased a new macbook pro and connected it to my old network. i have noticed a few things...
    1) the signal bars are usually four, but sometimes drop to 2 randomly
    2) often airtunes will not play music, it finds the basestation, and appears to begin playing, but the scrollbar does not move and no music plays (this is my most serious issue)
    3) random slow internet, coincides with drop in signal from 4 to 2
    4) i have also noticed many more networks in my airport menu
these problems never occurred with my old computer, i played airtunes seamlessly for 2 years and perhaps had random slow internet. i need my music, and it is quite distressing. i have no 2.4 GHz phones, no microwaves nearby, i do have a Wii and am a mere 15 feet from the AEX. i have done a restart to the AEX, changed channels when down to 2 bars with some intermittent help. i won't put up with having to troubleshoot every time this occurs, which has been everyday thus far. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi again,
I have lost count of the number of posts here, in addition to my direct experience with my clients, where FileVault is discovered to be the main cause of whatever symptoms are being experienced. I refuse to turn it on on any of my systems and will always, always advise against turning it on to anyone who asks me.
I would recommend that you initially back up all your data to external media (either external hd or DVD-R) and then attempt to turn off FileVault. I purposely used the word attempt because, more often than not, even this can cause issues. If you are unable to turn FileVault off, indeed even if successful, I would recommend that you carry out an Erase and Install using your MacBook Pro's system disks.
In short, my message is ---- stay away from FileVault.
If you require to protect your files then the best way to achieve this is via Disk Utility and creating an encryted image. More details here:

  • Apple original Airport card and AEX

I have an iMac slot loading SE 600mhz and want to connect with my wireless network via Airport Express. Are there any compatibility issues witth the Apple originla Airport Card? I am about to bid on ebay but thought I should check. Any help out there?

A Mac with an original Airport card will work perfectly with the Airport Express - the only requirement is that the Mac is running a minimum of MacOS 10.3 in order to be able to configure the device.

  • Keeping b/g and n separate using AEBS & AEX

I'm trying to create two ways for devices to connect to each other and the Internet via my cable modem, an Airport Extreme Base station, and an older Airport Express.
My first issue was verifying which Apple devices use b/g and which use n. This info is not in one convenient place (unless I failed to find it), but I discovered that setting the AEBS to "n only (2.4 gHz)" is a handy way to test: b/g devices will not be able to join its network.
Remaining issues cropped up with trying to navigate the maze of WDS vs. Bridge Mode vs. extending or not. Problems included b/g devices getting knocked off the AEX intermittently and my USB printer (attached to the AEX) not being available from some devices. I've read lots of good info here and tried various settings, some of which worked; some not.
Rather than go through all of that here, I'd like to ask the experts if my setup (which appears to be working now) is the best way to do what I want (keep b/g and n separate) and if by chance I've stumbled on the best set of options, to post it here for others:
Devices: AEBS (n), AEX (b/g), iPhone 4, G4 iMac, Intel MacBook, iPod Touch Gen 2, Apple TV Gen 1, iBook G4, Comcast cable modem, Canon 3500 printer, USB HD hosting Time Machine backups.
The cable modem, iMac, and AEX are connected to the AEBS via Ethernet (WAN & LAN). The external HD is connected to the AEBS via USB. The printer is connected to the AEX via USB.
    _AEBS config:_
    Wireless mode: create a network
    Wireless network name: Fast
Radio mode: 802.11n only (2.4 gHz)
    Allow extended: not checked
    Security: WPA2 Personal
    Internet: Connect using Ethernet
Connect sharing: Share a public IP address
    TCP/IP Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
DHCP address range in the 10.x space
    _AEX config:_
    Wireless mode: create a network
    Wireless network name: Slow
    Radio mode: 802.11 b/g compatible
    Security: WPA2 Personal
    Internet: Connect using Ethernet
    Connect sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
    TCP/IP Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    Any advice or comments welcome.
    Thanks,

  • Not printing: AEX + Win XP + HP LaserJET 1022

    Hello all
I have received a great deal of information from browsing these forums before, but I'm a first-timer when it comes to questions.
I have two laptops connected to an Airport Express. The first is a Powerbook G4, the second is a Sony Vaio running Win XP Pro. I have a HP LaserJet 1022 connected via USB to the Airport Express. My problem, in short, is that I can't print to the HP 1022 from the Sony Vaio.
It may help if I tell you what does work (which is almost everything). Both computers talk to the AEX fine, and are connected to the internet through it fine. The Powerbook prints to the HP 1022 fine as well (both directly and when it is connected to the AEX). The Sony Vaio prints to the HP 1022 when it is directly connected, but not when it is connected to the AEX.
I have followed the instructions in the AEX handbook: creating a new port, adding a printer, etc. Creating the printer seems fine, but printing to it doesn't.
Is there anything that anyone can suggest pls?
    Many thanks in advance,
    AndrewL

    Try using these detailed instructions:
Printing from a Windows XP PC to a printer attached to an Airport Extreme Base Station or Airport Express using Bonjour

  • Im not able to connect a new AEX to PI 7.1

    Hello,
I have installed a new separate Advanced Adapter Engine Extended (AEX) to connect to my old PI 7.1.
After installing I did the next basis task recommended by master guide.
    - PI self test for AEX Sheduler
    - PI self Test for AEX
    - PI test: AEX initial Setup
Also I registered the AEX local SLD to PI 7.1 SLD but still Im not able to connect the AEX in the Non-Central Adapter Engine into PI 7.1 components.
I hope maybe somebody knows what else need to be done to make this config.
    Thanks in advance.
    Juan

    Hi,
Yes the new AEX is a separate server on the same domain but diferente instance number.
I did a clean of all data cache and restarted the PI 7.1 instance also
Do you know if any configuration should be done in PI 7.4 to register the new AEX component ?

  • Recommended installation option PO vs. AEX / adding usage type in future

    Dear guys,
at the moment some clients I am working with a thinking of migrate their existing PI dual stack landscape and setupt a new single stack landscape.
Doing so there is the question either to go for PO or AEX.
Often there is no need for BPM/BRM component yet, but maybe this will change in future.
Therefore there is the question if it is pssible to add BPM/BRM functionality to an existing AEX installation (SID) or not.
So far I found inconsistent information regarding this question.
In this blog it is mentioned that adding of BPM/BRM is not possible.
    http://scn.sap.com/community/process-orchestration/blog/2012/12/07/upgrade-options-to-the-latest-process-integration-or-process-orchestration
Instead this presenation indicates that it should be possible to add new usage type to an existing AEX (slide 5 which is also included in Teched presenations)
    http://www.sapevent.ch/landingpagesfr/Manager/uploads/303/TU%20S2%20Technical%20PI_to_PO_Migration.pdf
Can anyone clear up this topic?
    Appreciate your help.
    Best regards
    Jochen

    Hi Hareesh
thanks for your reply and pointing me to this thread.
Obviously the deployment possibility changed overtime and was initially not possible but now it seems to be possible.
    Process Orchestration - SAP Library
You can obtain Process Orchestration by installation or by adding the corresponding usage types to an existing SAP NetWeaver system. For latter, both are supported, deployment of BPM on an existing AEX system and deployment of an AEX on an existing BPM system.
Also the lately published PO Roadmap indicates that it should be possible to add usage type. (page 25)

  • AEX as client with Win 2000...Can it work?

I thought I was rather AirPort savvy after successfully wading through all my problems setting it up under XP. Then a friend asked if I could help him get his AEX up and running. Five hours later I am still at a loss. With an eathernet connection the airport admin software connects to the unit and all is well. But the unit still does nothing but flash amber when no wires are connected. He wants his Airport Express to join the existing wirless network. His setup is as follows:
    Windows 2000
Trendnet router (the same that I am using)
    No WEP or WPA protection
    Network name "wlan-g"
    No MAC filtering
    Server assigned DHCP/IP
Admin utility setup with the same details as above
Factory reset unit w/ latest firmware
Thanks in advace for any help

Presumably you followed David Lovell's instructions at:
David Lovell, "Airtunes for XP with a Wired/Wireless network" #1, 09:05pm Jan 8, 2005 CDT
If the PC running Windows 2000 can "see", view, and alter the configuration of the Airport Express, then the PC is not the cause of the problem.
I don't immediately see what you are doing wrong based on what you have told us. Long shot but - you might try renaming the router using only letters, numbers, and no punctuation like the "-" character.
Trying to go for excessive range, having the Airport Express located behind a pile of cables and stereo equipment, and radio interference from neighboring networks can also play a big role in preventing the Airport Express from communicating with the router.

  • Mac after effects cs3 WONT RECOGNIZE .AEX FILES

    Hi,
I use a mac osx and I own a copy of Adobe After Effects. I have been playing around with it in the past few months and I have recently started installing plug-ins. The problem is, some of these plug-ins are .aex files, and when I put them in my plug-in directory After Effects won't recognize them. It will recognize .ffx and .plugin files, but not .aex. I have found out that .aex is for the PC version only and I think this is a very prominent design flaw because most plug-ins are in .aex format.
Is there any converter for .aex to .plugin? And will this problem be sorted in the next version of After Effects?
    Thanks,
    Reuben

PC and mac are completely different operating systems with different code requirements. There's no practical way for Adobe to write some kind of translator that will make PC plug-ins run in the Mac OS.
Some plug-ins are written for Power PC and not for Intel Macs. These also require different code. For plug-ins to work in both Intel Mac and Power PC Macs must be written in Universal Binary. This has nothing to do with Adobe and everything to do with the manufacturers of plug-ins.
If you're running on an Intel mac and want to use non intel plug-ins you'll have to run AE under Rosetta emulation. You do that by going to the applications folder and selecting Info for the AE app. You'll find a check box for Rosetta. This will make these plug-ins work, but AE won't run as efficiently and may not be as stable.
Most plug-in installers are aware of the OS and will not install on incompatible systems. In many cases installing a plug-in is more than just dragging the plug-in into the apps plug-in folder.
If you're copying from another system, one that you don't own, then you're violating licensing and most plug-ins will either run in demo mode with a watermark or will not run at all.
    Hope this helps.

  • After effects cs4 says .aex is an unrecognized file extension

I have searched the forums for a solution, but i've been trying to use the element 3d plug-in from video copilot for quite a while.  It's an .aex plugin, and I have it in the right plugin folder, but no matter what I do, it will not work.  Please help!

What kind of system do you have? Are you trying to access the plug-in from the Effects menu or Effects and Presets Panel?
All installers are not equal. There should have been some documentation with the plug-in.

  • Possible to use Airport Extr and Express for WIRED Guest Network?

    Situation and landscape:
My house has a Comcast cable-modem, which is connected to an Airport Extreme (AEx).
The AEx is running WPA WiFi, and this is all good.
There is one ethernet wire running out of the AEx, which goes 150 feet to the rear of my house, across a short corridor (protected from weather with insulated pipe) and into my garage apartment, where it terminates into an Airport Express (APress.)   This garage apartment is frequently used as part of a rental property.  The APress is extending the same WiFi SSID/settings.
When guests arrive, they are able to plug-in their notebook computers to the APress ethernet port, or use the WiFi.
Well, the problem with that, obviously, is that they can "see" the other computers on the network, and printers, etc.
It would be perfect to set configure the AEx and APress to the WiFi "guest network."  However, there are problems with this:
    1)  Believe it or not, many guests still use direct-plug and do not have nor know how to set up their WiFi -- so they MUST have a direct ethernet wire.
    2)  When I use Airport Utility for the APress, it does not show any WiFi guest network option -- maybe because another dependent setting is not allowing this (i.e. Bridge Mode?")
    3)  The distance between the AEx and this garage apartment is too long between them to shoot a WiFi guest network from AEx and to be picked-up by the Airport Express... and there's a center core in my old house that is impervious to all radio frequencies and could block a nuclear blast.  Well, it causes a degradation of wireless.   And this brings us back to #1 above...in that I need a cable ethernet option.
    Picture attached of current landscape:
    So, maybe....
I've spent the better part of a couple of hours searching here, particularly for the terms "access point" but the terminology isn't what I need.  What I wonder if perhaps I need to place an APress beside the AEx, turn on Guest Network at the AEx, then "pick it up" with a second APress, and carry the ethernet signal to the garage apartment and allow guest WiFi and wired.  (see second picture)   Will this work?

OK, here how to set this up.
Open up AirPort Utility 5.6.1, select the Express, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located below the icons
If you want the Guest Network to have a different SSID (recommended), then change the name of the wireless network, adjust the security settings if needed, and change the Wireless Password and Verify
Click the Internet icon up at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below the icons
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Share a public IP address
Click the DHCP tab located under the icons
Change the DHCP Beginning Address to read something different.....like 10.0.5.2
Click Update and give the Express a full minute to restart
At this point, the Express indicator light will be slowly blinking amber
Open up AirPort Utility again, select the Express and click directly on the word Status (2nd line)
You should see a Double NAT notice with an option to "ignore" the item
There may also be an Setup over WAN notice with an option to "ignore" the item
Click in the boxes to ignore both items, then click Update again and the Express will restart and display a green light
Try things out to verify that the Guest Network cannot "see" any devices on the main network...and vice versa.
