Affect of Journals to performance

We have a rather large application and currently there are numerous journal entries. I am fairly certain the Journals affect overall performance of the application. The subcubes are based on Entity, Year, Scenario, and Value dimensions, so therefore you would have more cubes to contend with. I am suggesting to the users to limit the amount of journals in the application and they will see better performance in consolidation times, but I have not located any documentation to that fact.

How does Index fragmentation and statistics affect the sql query performance
Very simple answer, outdated statistics will lead optimizer to create bad plans which in turn will require more resources and this will impact performance. If index is fragmented ( mainly clustered index, holds true for Non clustred as well) time spent in finding
the value will be more as query would have to search fragmented index to look for data, additional spaces will increase search time.

  • Excessive reads affecting SAP ECC 6 performance post upgrade.

We just recently upgraded SAP to ECC 6, r2.  We are using Windows Server OS 2000 for both database and application servers, and SQL Server 2000 sp4 is the DBMS.  While the SAP application is performing its work and producing results, it is taking longer to complete and thus the perception is that this new version of SAP is not working!
I say 'excessive reads' because when you look at the transaction load via SM66, there are many more sequential reads occurring than were occurring before the upgrade.
Help Please as I just heard a person ask if we could roll back to 4.6c.   Any suggestions are most appreciated.

    Hi Carla,
I suppose you have done all the necessary stuff like update statistics. Please check note 155413 and analyze the statements. The step from 4.6c to ECC6.0 is not only big, it is huge (concerning changes within the application), so the perception of your users is not that wrong. You are running the latest version from SAP on the oldest supported versions from Microsoft - that doesn't really make sense. A quick gain would be an upgrade to SQL Server 2005 (better optimizer, better tools,...). If this really affects your production environment, open a call at SAP.

  • How can I delete photos from my iPad without affecting my journal in iPhoto?

    Hi,
I have recently been on a long trip creating a journal in iPhoto as I go, uploading many gb of photos using the camera connection kit.
I love the way I can view my journal and tap on photos to see them in full screen and maximum quality.
I am now home and need to delete all the photos from my iPad after uploading them to my mac. However when I do this, I can no longer view the photos in my journal in full screen. How can I keep the journal looking as great as it is, without not having to go through and delete only pictures not included in my journal? There are many thousand pics on the iPad now so I need to delete them all...
    Please help!
    Paul

Add the photos you want to your journal.  Then, you delete them from your ipad and they will NOT be deleted from your journal (One of my journals has 1000+ pics of my garden, so I have to delete pics on my 32G ipad).  I've been doing this for 5+ months and never had a problem--all my pics stay in my journal--but note, that every once in a while after I delete the photos from my ipad (via camera roll/photostream-I don't unse iPhoto to delete) it takes up to half an hour for the photos to resync (so sometimes it looks like the photos are missing in the journal but they ALWAYS come back).  Do a test journal and add a page of photos to it.  Then, delete them from your ipad and wait a bit and see what happens.  It always works fine for me, but you could do that just to be on the safe side.

  • Can a bad battery affect my MBP's performance, even when plugged in?

Well, as the title says... my battery status says "Service Battery", and although I know the instructions are simple ("dude, take your laptop's battery for servicing!"), a few months ago my financial situation changed, I'm trying to adjust the budget as much as I can for now, and I'm not sure I can afford to spend much money at the moment.
The thing is, my laptop's performance has been slowly getting worse all the time. at first, it was only with resource-intensive applications, but lately, even having more than 5 tabs open in Chrome gets the system all laggy. Now, as I've read on other threads talking about batteries being in bad shape, I would assume that, if the system can't draw much power, it can't work as hard, so a bad battery could be the culprit of such performance. However, if my laptop's plugged in, shouldn't it be drawing power straight from the outlet, hence being able to get all the juice it needs to feed both the 9400M & 9600M GT?

Not necessarily, if the battery is trying gobble some power, as the bad batt is still in the charge/power circut. 446 cycles is quite a bit, and not a bad run, it also depends on how it has been used.
I would replace it ASAP as it is possible that it may create/cause more severe issues. A new battery is less $$ than more serious damage that could possibly result from leaving it in.

  • Does running windows on MBA affect its hardware and performance??

    Specs: OS X 10.9.3, 1.4 GHz 4th gen i5, 4 GB RAM, 1600 MHz DDR3, intel HD Graphics 5000, 128 GB.
I want windows on my mac to use windows compatible apps like AutoCad, ProE etc and for games.. I'm worried about its hardware and performance after installing windows..

You can run Windows either natively using BootCamp or in virtualization using a third party program like Parallels Desktop. It won’t harm the computer to run Windows but while Apple promises really good battery life with MBA you aren’t going to get that kind of battery life with Windows, at least not with Win 7 or earlier. I couldn’t tolerate Win8 so I can’t tell you if Microsoft has done a better job with battery life management or not. Lots of my Windows using friends and colleagues refer to their MBA as the best Windows notebook they’ve ever owned but like me, they don’t use 8.

If I lay one of those silicon keyboard protectors, will it affect the laptop's performance because it's blocking air from going into the system? -Evan

if the air vent is blocked, then it could cause overheating when you push the laptop's CPU and GPU.

  • Performance issue with a PI System

    Hello
I am currently doing my Master Thesis, which is about a Software Experiment comparing performance between two "architectures" in SAP.
However, I am getting some unexplained pauses in the PI system, which I don't understand. I am not sure, whether this is a problem with the settings or a problem with the PI system itself (there might be a reason for the pauses), but the pauses are skewing the results and therefore the survey.
    The scenario is this:
A number of XML files is placed on one system, and we want to extrapolate data from these files and insert the data in a database on another system.
The servers are all 3 GHz servers (4 cores), with 16 GB ram. The "file system" and the "database system" are both running SAP 6.0, while the PI system is running 7.0.
    Architecture 1 - Two servers:
We use an ABAP program and a XSLT transformation to extrapolate and transfer data from the system with the files to the system with database. An experiment with 10.000 files took 191,879 seconds.
    Architecture 2: - Three servers:
The same servers are used as in Architecture 1, however a PI System is used to extrapolate and transfer the data from the system with the files to the system with database. I am using a File Adapter. An experiment with 10.000 files took 728,53 seconds.
This is quite a bit longer and the reason for this can be found in the timestamps used to calculate the time. Each piece of data gets a timestamp from each server, an a example can be seen below:
    ...42.4440000
    ...42.4440000
    ...45.8040000
    ...45.8190000
As you can see there is about a 3 sec pause, and this pause occurs once every 20-30 files. Can you point at any obvious reasons for this small pause?
As I am learning PI is a complex system, so I am pretty sure you need more information about how the system was set up, unless the answer is simple. I am of course, more than willing to supply more information, so that I might get a correct evaluation of the performance of the PI system, however I am not sure what kind information you want. Because of the complexity of the system, a full description of the set up and the settings would transform this post into a novel.
Best Regards and thank you in advance!
    Andreas

    Dear Neetesh
    Thank you for your answer!
Point-to-Point communication is always faster, but when we talk about complex IT architecture, then the idea is to streamline the flow of communication through a central hub. So, performance will definitely won't be the same.
This is true, I did not expect the PI system to perform nearly as good as the Point-to-Point system, I am more worried that the results is not representative, because of all the pauses.
What is the polling interval of File Adapter? What is the size of each files? What is the PI hardware configuration? What mapping you are using? All these issues can affect / slower down the performance.
What is the polling interval of File Adapter?
When you say Polling Interval of the File Adapter, do you mean how often it checks for Files? Because that is the only option I can find:
"Number of seconds that the adapter is to wait if no files are found for processing" (from SAP Guide)
If so, this is set to 0. In order to start the test, I deactivate the File Adapter, copy the files and activate it again. It starts almost immediately with getting the files.
What is the size of each files?
The size of the files varies between 2KB and 128KB, depending of the amount of data. The processing time does go up, but not as much as you would expect. For example 10.000 files with the size of 2KB takes around 12 min and 10.000 files with the size of 128KB takes around 15 min. The problem is that in both cases, there is these 3 sec pauses.
What is the PI hardware configuration?
I am not sure what you mean. The server is a 3 GHz server (4 cores), with 16 GB ram.
    What mapping you are using?
All data elements from the XML files are mapped directly to the IDOC. There is no processing (or call to any functions) or any changes made to the data, so the mapping is direct. Except I have made a custom function, which simply calls a timestamp function, in order to get the timing.
On Tuesday (two days time from now), I get more servertime, I will try to see if I can find an actual Polling Interval of the File Adapter, if this is what you meant.
    Best,
    Andreas

  • HR infotype log in PCL4 and overall performance

    Hi there,
There has been a few threads about PCL4 performance with regards to reading, but I have a slightly different question:
We are working on an export program for HR masterdata and are considering using logging in PCL4 to be able to export only changed fields in the infotypes. To achieve this we need to add quite alot of extra fields and infotypes to the configuration in the IMG.
Does anyone have any experience about how additional fields and infotypes affect runtime and database performance of the system? How optimized is the system with regards to writing to this cluster?
It will obviously cause more data to be logged, and the database will grow slightly faster, but does it decrease responsiveness of PA30/40 for the end users? Is it possible to archive old data from this cluster? I'm guessing that it won't be a big problem, but any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Lars G. Gudbrandsen

    Hi Lars,
Probably you would get a better response in the HCM section as opposed to ABAP.
Maybe you can use change pointers, and badis rather, to acheive what you want but I am not 100% sure the requirement.
Additional fields and infotypes don't impact the system negatively in my opinion. It wouldn't affect PA30, unless the specific infotype is selected and then provided if it has been correctly created in PM01 it should be fine, also depending how many fields you are talking about of course. PA40 would only be impacted for those transacitons for which the infotype is included.
As for archiving, I am not sure, but once again i think HCM forum is your best bet.

  • File Or Proxy Which is better in Performance?

    Hi Friends,
In one scenario we are sending data from R/3 to legacy System.. The amount of Data Could be around 2000 records(Each record having just 5 fields).. For retreiving data from R/3  we are thing of going for Proxy... At the same time we are thinking of useing File adapter for reading data from R/3.we will write that data to a file and then transfer   .... My doubt is which is the better way to do it...And in which type of scenarios using File for Reading R/3 data is suggested....
    Regards,
    Shyam M.

Yes the Proxy will be direct communication with integration server.
But with file you need to have the File adapter to conver it to XML format before reaching upto Integration server. While dealing with high volume of data this will affect lot on the performance.
Actually above 80MB there might be problems with memory on your abap stack.
Upgrade the configuration of Integration Engine.
Here you need to increase the Memory size as well as paging and heap size. It will allow you to have max utilization of memory for such vloume of data.
    Thanks

  • Form Performance Degrades after Business Rules are added to Run on Save

Has anyone ever seen an instance where adding business rules to a form (run on save only) makes the form open twice as slow?
We have some large forms that were opening in about 20 seconds that suddenly started taking twice as long (40 seconds). When we remove the association of the business rule, they are opening quickly again. Because the business rules are set to run on save, I'm not sure why they would affect the form open performance.
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    - Jake

I am guessing here a bit.
But a question. Is your calc complicated? does it have a lot of variable in the calc?
My guess is that even though the calc is run on save when you open it it compiles the calc as you open it. A check is to create a really simple calc one line that basically does nothing and see if that changes your performance. Also if you click off "run on save" does the performance return?
    Just theory guessing here.

  • Language related performance issues in PS HRMS

    Dear experts,
I was just verifying a PS HRMS application(enterprise 9.1) performance and I found out that the language I select while logging in is drastically affecting the end user performance.
The verification for all languages were done from same location(suspected the issue could be location\network specific).
Any suggestions/recommendations/insights that would help me understand this issue better would be welcome!
         Best Regards,
    A   Arun

I've heard this issue before. If you check the query being executed, you'll see that when you're working in a non-base language, that the related language records are joined in as well. If you're searching in a big record (PS_JOB e.g.), you can thus end up with a much more costly query. I don't have a solution just right away on how to force lookups etc. to not check unneeded language stuff, but knowing the base issue might point you in a good direction to look further.

  • How to improve compact performances

    Hello,
    I have a question regarding scaling DB->compact:
My setup is quite simple: I have a 32 environments with 512 MB of cache and 5 databases each. The biggest database is about 8GB and is filled at 66%. My application is running non stop and I'd like to get some disk space back from my databases.
So I added some code that manually compacts this big database step by step (about 100 pages of 64K at each step) and using 90% fillpercent, but I found out that compact makes lots of IO and it heavily affected my application's performances...
The only solution I've found so far is to increase cache to 3GB for the env being compacted; then my application runs normally but as I cannot afford that much memory, I have the following questions:
    - Why compact requires that much cache? makes that many IOs?
    - Is there another way that does not involve that much cache?
    - I'm running Berkeley DB 4.7.25 on FreeBSD. Could it help to upgrade to a newer version?
Any comment that could help me understand why things are so would be much appreciated.
    Well, thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Database compaction can be a very I/O intensive operation as data needs to be moved between database pages, dirtied pages from the cache need to be flushed to disk in order to have enough room for the set of pages required by compaction to stay in the buffer pool etc.
There are some strategies to reduce the I/O impact. Bellow are a series of suggestions that you could try:
    1. If you can upgrade to the most recent Berkeley DB version then you should do it. There were lots of enhancements and bug fixes in the compaction code. Download the latest BDB production release from here.
    2. When doing compaction of a database opened within a transactional environment perform the compact without passing an explicit transaction to the DB->compact() method, that is, using a NULL txnid pointer. In such case, the operation will be implicitly transaction protected using multiple transactions. These transactions will be periodically committed to avoid locking large sections of the tree. Any deadlocks encountered cause the compaction operation to be retried from the point of the last transaction commit. Compact does not keep the pages it scans locked. Any page that does not have to be updated is unlocked immediately. BDB locks only the pages that are below a single parent page of the leaf level, and does not lock the pages in the free list when removing them from the file; only the metadata page will be locked.
    3. When running compaction in order to free up space and return empty database pages to the filesystem it is usually recommended to repeat the compact with a lower compact_fillpercent. The following output statistics fields in the DB_COMPACT structure, compact_pages_truncated and compact_pages_free should be examined to determine if there is a point in continuing to run compaction with the same compact_fillpercent or if a lower compact_fillpercent should be used. If the values are strict positives then it's worth calling DB->compact again with the same compact_fillpercent (and specifying the DB_FREE_SPACE flag).
The compact algorithm makes a one-pass over the pages of the database; so nonempty pages at the end of the file will prevent free pages (that are placed on the free list) from being returned to the filesystem.
    4. If you can logically split your database into sections of key/data pairs based on the values of the keys, then you can perform compaction only on certain parts of the database. Use start and stop keys when doing the DB->compact() call.
    5. You can inspect the memory pool statistics to see if your cache is performing well. See the Selecting a cache size documentation section. It usually helps, in particular when doing compaction, to increase the cache size.
    6. Perform the compact operation when there is no intensive write activity in the database, that is, when other threads of control are not writing to the database (or when such activity is moderate to low).
    7. Use memory pool trickling by calling DB_ENV->memp_trickle() to try keeping a certain percent of the pages in the cache clean.
    Regards,
    Andrei

  • Sequencer Settings - what do they affect?

First time user here, I'm a little confused about the documentation about the Sequencer Settings (Control+0), the settings such as quality, codec, etc, what exactly do they affect (and by that I mean at what level).
Do they affect the way they are rendered as I am previewing my project or when I do the final render/export?
Does it affect quality and codec if I use FC to export or if I send to Compressor will it affect the way Compressor renders it? what if I use pass-through settings with compressor? Will the Sequencer Settings in FC affect that too? Basically I'm looking for the scope of how much of FC's Sequencer Settings affect.

It effects your performance and rendering in FCP. It effects your export functions and output to tape. It does not effect send to or share.
