AFP Clients Freeze During "Find File" Search

I've been having an issue with my 10.2.8 servers for the past 3 months. When one client begins a "Find File" search on a network volume, all of the clients connected to the server sharing that volume freeze until the search is completed. As it stands now, if I don't restart the servers each morning AFP will freeze altogether. So far I've install a fresh copy of 10.2 server on a new machine and copyed the data over but it had no effect. I've seen no errors in network utility on both the client and the server. Any Ideas on what to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Here what I got back when I tried this:
techs01:~ techs$ sudo mdutil -i on/ZZ01ProductionServer/Hammer

  • Connect to Server freezes AFP client and hangs Finder

I have a brand new iMac core2duo (2GB RAM) and an older G4 iMac. Machines are running 10.4.8 (all updates applied) and 10.4.7 respectively. They're connected via Ethernet on my home network through a router.
When I first set up the Intel Mac I had no problems connecting to the G4 via Connect to Server. I could log in and mount remote volumes, etc. Now, after about a week of use, the Intel Mac AFP client hung after I logged in to the G4 and selected the remote volume to mount. The only way to cancel the operation was to Force Quit the process. Activity Monitor indicated the application as "not responding." This happened three times. I was able to connect to the Intel machine from the G4 without problem.
After two or three attempts at this, I tried simply connecting through the Network icon in a Finder window. This hung the Finder at pretty much the same point as before (after logging in and selecting a volume to access). After force quitting the Finder, the frozen window closed. However, I then decided to restart the Intel Mac "for the **** of it" to see if it would solve the AFP problem. After clicking Restart, the Desktop was cleared and the machine froze. (No kernel panic, just an empty Finder desktop with my wallpaper and a mouse cursor). I was forced to physically shut down and restart the machine.
I'd very much like to know why this is happening on a brand new machine with very little software and how to resolve it. In general both machines are manually put to sleep at night, they are not shut down.

Unlike those above, I've had the alternate problem. After being connected to a newtork share (SAMBA off an Intel MacMini) all day, I try to eject the network drive so I can go home for the night. End result is that the drive won't eject and after another try the finder hangs completely. Can't force quit...just spinning BBOD.
I have seen this behavior in 10.4.8 (not in 10.4.7) on both a 4 year old TiBook and a brand-spanking new MacBookPro 15.4". It's disturbing, because the same problem happens when you sleep your machine and wake it up elsehwere.....the finder hangs for a while trying to find the network share.
    Thoughts?

  • Finder Freezing During Network File Transfer

I have 2 external G-Drives daisy chained via FW800 on another Mac in the house.  Sometime when I try to look at the drive in finder from another computer on the network Finder freezes.  All I can do is a forced renoot and then things are back to normal.  Sometimes this happens when I try to look at the second hard drive in the daisy chain or during file transfers I will get an error code - 50.
Again after a reboot things are normal again, but it happens more often then not.

Just did that this morning, and it made know difference.
After computer goes to sleep if I wake it up via the network drive 1 loads and 2nd daisy chain drive kills finder.
    System reboot fixes it.

  • Find File not working

I've got an XServe running Server OS 10.4.7 connected to an XServe RAID. My share points (folders) on the RAID don't allow for find file searches when accessed via AFP for all users but me. If I log on to the shares with my administrator login, they are searchable. No errors, but returns zero items found when I search for known files.
The users all have Read Write permissions. Any Ideas?
    Thank You,
    Joe

  • Gnome, Nautilus / Pcman Main menu Opening Find File instead of Home

    Hi there,
I am running two user, mine on Compiz-standalone with Pcman as it's lighter.
The second user is using gnome and therefore need and want to keep using nautilus,
The problem is when trying to open the Home folder from the Gnome main menu, a dialogue box "Find File" is opening instead of the Home folder by Nautilus.
Now after searching the forum, I edited the /usr/share/applications/mime.cache
However this hasn't change the problem, I try restarting the PC for the change to take effect but without success.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this annoying bug?

I am having the same issue, using regular Gnome with Nautilus. I started noticing it after the upgrade to Gnome 2.30. Clicking any of the top section buttons under the Gnome panel's "Places" menu brings up "Find Files" searching inside the folder, instead of Nautilus on the folder. Clicking on "Computer" actually does bring up Nautilus.

  • File search problems in Leopard

I MUCH preferred the older (pre-leopard) finder file search application(NOT spotlight). I was able to type what I was looking for and manually select the drives and servers I wanted searched in the finder window. The results came in, broken down by kind (image, document, pdf, folder) in icon driven sub-categories. Spotlight and the clumsy new search application are a MAJOR setback for me. This is the first bad move I have had to call Apple on.

You can only select the whole computer, or ONE and only one specific location to search (this is a reduction in functionality from the implementation of Spotlight in Tiger). Thus if I wanted to search my Data drive only, not my startup or backup drive, I would navigate in the Finder to the Data drive, then hit Command-F, then click on "Data" rather than the default "This Mac" (which is always selected, which is ridiculous--when you bring up search with a Command-F you want to search in that place, if you wanted to search everywhere you would use the Spotlight menu bar function). The nearest you can come to grouping things is to put the results window into List view (Command-2 or select from List from the View option in the Finder window's toolbar), then click the Kind column. You might find my little essay on Leopard's Spotlight helpful:

You might also wish to tell Apple about how you feel:

  • I photo freezes under 'cannot find file'

When I open iphoto it works fine for a few seconds but then it freezes and says 'cannot find file .........'
I then have to force quit because it says it's 'not responding'
I don't know why the files have gone from iphoto because I can still find them if I search for them and they seem to be in the correct place.
For the moment I cannot use iphoto at all so please help!
    Thanks
    Chloe

    Chloe
When it says that it cannot find a file, does it mention the file types?
    Some other things to try:
Rebuild the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Mac OS 9 client cannot find files using Sherlock on 10.4.9 Server

    Hi folks,
the subject says everything. The client simply returns immeditelly with "Search produced no results". Any idea?

Yup he's correct somewhere in 10.4 Server they broke it (Spotlight is way different then the old ways). If your clients can upgrade to OS X and use Classic 9.2.2 to run there OS 9 Application I highly recommend you do so. Apple support for Pure OS 9 clients is running thin as seen with the latest problems with AFP under 10.4.9. You can expect for things to get worse from here I suspect. They may cave to keeping some basic File sharing in place but search and other functions that the server provided to Pure OS 9 clients will be gone. I also would not be surprised if all Classic support dies out after 10.5. We have all had some time now to road map to OS X and I am keenly aware of the costs of upgrading. I have only one unit still running Pure OS 9 because of a old Application that needs a ADB dongle attached. Beyond that All other users use Classic 9.2.2 and can run the few application still used.
If your feeling geeky you could write a simple Web page with a Search field that can search the shared volumes. You can host it on the OS X Server and provide for login for security or only allow IP range into the page. I was going to do this about 6 month ago to support the 2 other users I had on OS 9 but decided to bite the bullet and go to X with them.

  • New with 10.5 Server client problems finding files

I have some client problems searching for files (not via Spotlight, via our own program that uses PBCatSearch) that started with installation of OS X Server 10.5.
I convinced myself earlier today that Open Directory was the culprit so I posted in the Open Directory forum, but I'm still having the issues now with OD out of the picture. Can anyone following this forum comment on my post?
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1779541&tstart=0

Tonight we tried a test to see if it was possible the files were somehow getting "locked" by one client so that another couldn't access the files it was looking for.
We restarted AFP then went connected one client and did our test, the first client succeeded. Then we connected the next client, did the test and it failed. Then we tried a third client, it succeeded.
Then we restarted AFP again and tried a different order of clients. In the three rounds we did it was always the second client that ran the test that failed.
Is it possible that Leopard server is more strict with multiple clients accessing the same files than Tiger server was?

  • Open PDF's in new window in document library when using "Find a file" search

I need to be able to open PDF's in a new window from a document library when using the "Find a file" search built into the document library "All documents" view. I currently have the following javascript on the page:
    _spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames.push("setTargetBlank()");
    function setTargetBlank()
    { $("a[href$='.pdf']").removeAttr('onclick').attr("target", "_blank");
This works great when going to the document library and navigating through the folders then clicking on a link.
The problem is when someone goes to the document library then uses the "Find a file" search and then they click on a link. The "Find a file" search does not do a postback (reload) of the page, therefore my javascript to find the PDF links
and make them open in a new window does not run for the links on the page.
I have read the following article but this does not seem to offer a solution that will work in this situation for SharePoint 2013 (Office 365): http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/7ad3224c-3165-47ae-95bc-4f3928e2f9a8/opening-document-library-pdf-in-a-new-window-sharepoint-2013?forum=sharepointgeneral
I suppose the idea solution would be to somehow tap into the event that is fired when using "Find a file" search to run my javascript and update the links for the search results.
Can anyone offer any solutions to this issue?

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to open PDF files in a new window from a document library when using the "Find a file" search.
As you said, the "Find a file" search does not do a postback (reload) of the page, therefore JavaScript to find the PDF links and make them open in a new window does not run for the links on the page.
I recommend to use JS link to achieve the goal. Create a JavaScript override file and upload the JavaScript file to the Master Page Gallery, and then set the JS Link property of the document library web part to point to the JavaScript file.
Here are some links about the JS link in SharePoint 2013 for you to take a look:

  • Cannot find file #01, do you want to search?"

We recorded a song yesterday and saved it as properly as the other sessions we also recorded. Today I want to open it, but it always says "Cannot find file #01, do you want to search?" But I've got the problem only with one file, the other songs are ok.
The odd thing is: the file is there, also the tracks in the file and the recordings in the tracks appear. But the music inside the recordings is gone. Also the media file is empty. I'm quite desperate and my band will kill me. Can anybody help?

Did you move the songs to the current folder AFTER you added them to iTunes? Sounds like you did. Big mistake. You may just have to delete you library and re-import them from the current folder. Once you've done that, leave the files where they are. iTunes can't track where you're moving your music to from one place to the next.

  • What is the name of the folders which are your backup of Itunes library? I am recovering from a virus, have no workable desktop in Win XP, but can search and find files and folders. I would like to move these backup files to a new computer

what is the name of the folders which are the backup of Itunes library? I am recovering from a virus, have no workable desktop in Win XP, but can search and find files and folders. I would like to move these backup files to a new computer, authorize it and sync with Iphone 3Gs and Ipod 5th gen.
    I

I second the whole iTunes folder approach.
If for some reason you have split the media folder from the library files then the media folder needs to restored to the same path it used to have while the library files can be copied into the music folder of your new profile.
If in dobut, backup up the entire Documents and Settings folder before wiping the infected drive, but be selective about what you restore as many viruses drop active components capable of reinfecting the compuer in the temp folders and internet caches. It is much easier to backup more than you need than to discover after the fact that you no longer have access to some vital project you'd been storing in a folder on the desktop.

  • When searching for an image in Finder on iMac, I found hundreds of images of printers !! All sorts of printer images which I certainly haven't loaded on.I went to Finder, File, Find and Image and there they are, hundreds,if not low thousands of them.

I was searching for an image on my Imac and when I went to Finder,File,Find and then Image, I found hundreds if not early thousand images of printers ! Amazing in one way but I didn't put them on my machine and don't really want them there.Did they come pre-loaded? Can I delete them safely? Thanks

Almost certainly, no absolutely not once you start deleting stuff like this that you think is not needed, eventually you'll trash something essential and cause yourself a lot of heartache.
There are numerous files classed as images, some will be temporary files in browser caches, others system files, others your "real" images, others files which are not really images but appear to be.
The amount of space of what I presume are essentially icons of printers will will be minimal, lets say these images are  5k in size (I guess they are much smaller?) and there are 1,000 of them, thats only 5Mb. No doubt your disk has multiple gigabytes free, eg thousands of times as much free as you'd save by deleting all of them. So you might gain back an extra 0.0001% disk space*. NOt worth the time, let alone the risk, plus then you'll get into a mindset "hmm, I dont think I can possibly need this 23byte file either I'll delete that as well etc, and then "problem......".
Where are the images stored? It may be that at some time you were searching for a new printer and these images are from that exercise (though I doubt you looked at thousands?) in which case they are in your browser cache and you can always delete that through the browser, but that space will be overwritten by other images anyway.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a motto to work by with computers.
*( or, if you really do need the (say) 5MB of disk space back because you are running out, this would only be a very temporary solution and that wont have done you any good)
