AFP configuration to stop drives all spinning up when doing a 'save as'

Hi,
I have a mac mini running OSX Server, and sharing some large firewire drives over the network via AFP.
The other machines on my network are mounted to these drives, and as the drives are not accessed frequently, they are normally sleeping.
However on any of the client machines, when I am in an application and do a 'save as' for example.. then, there is a long wait while all these drives spin up. Looking at the AFP logs, its just polling them or something, but no real access at this point.
Is there anyway to stop OSX server from having to spin up the drives, just because something is polling them/checking that they are mounted (not really sure what its doing, but i dont think it needs to spin up the drive for that)
Any configuration change I could make, or any type of file/directory/toc cache that is available to enable ?
Another thing that causes all the drives to spin up is launching Aperture on one of the client machines, even though it does not need any files on there.
This whole thing is very annoying as it takes some time to spin up all the drives, and OSX just seems to hang while it waits.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Keith.

Hey David,
yes, the drives are sleeping most of the time.. (this is just a home network by the way) and as the drives are accessed about 5% of the time, i'd rather not have them spining all of the time, using power, etc.) they wake up fine whenever a computer tries to access them.
Well, the mini is runing all the time.. i don;t know how long it will last out but i tend to replace/update every few years anyway...
I hope you don't actually want those drives to sleep
on an actual fileserver
o.O
It's antithetical to have a (file-)server do
any sleeping of any kind.
What you can do is set the drives to not sleep.
You can use pmset (in the Terminal) to adjust sleep
settings for external drives.
PS: Minis are not rated for continuous use, certainly
not that 2.5" internal HD.
Hopefully your external drives cost extra and are
rated for continuous use. Don't think I've seen one
of those, maybe you could custom build some.

  • After visiting a website that was a pdf file (which didn't load -crashed), Firefox now constantly causes calls to my hard drive all the time when open.

I went to a site that was a pdf of a map. When I clicked on it, the hard drive called constantly and the map never did download. Now when I open Firefox, my computer constantly makes calls to the hard drive all the time Firefox is operating. This does not happen when I use MS Explorer. Also, when I close Firefox from the desktop, it appears to close but is still operating in the background. I have to go into Task Manager to close Firefox. Then the calls to the hard drive stop.
Something similar happened once before with a pdf file, but it stopped when I shut down Firefox, rebooted, and reopened in Safe Mode. Now the condition is permanent. Is there a fix?

  • Spinning wheel when trying to save

whenever I try to save a certain document (ms word) i get the spinning color wheel.

Does it go away after a while or stay on that and you have to Force Quit ?
Some Office Applications can have problems with corrupt or missing Fonts that can cause a few issues it might be worth running FontDoctor or some other freeware Font checker to see if all the source files are correct and in the right place, possibly remove duplicates as well.
Does the document have clip art files in it or other images or is it just plain text ?

  • Why does the hard drive keep spinning up when in sleep mode?

When my iMac 27" is in sleep mode I have noticed that the hard drive spins up very regularly every 4 or 5 minutes. Also when placed in sleep, the monitor takes about 30 seconds to go black. It also wakes on its own for no apparent reason. No new software has been added, only normal updates, running Lion. Time machine backup is done every couple weeks.

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If the problems persist after performing the above read the following.
Open the Terminal app - it is in your Mac's Utilities folder and looks like this
Select the entire line that follows (triple-click to select it), select Edit > Copy, and then Paste it into the Terminal window:
    clear; printf '\e[3J' && echo "**** Sleep/Wake events"; egrep -i 'eep\ cau|ake\ rea' /private/var/log/system.log; echo "**** Assertions"; pmset -g assertions
Copy the text of that entire window by selecting Edit > Select All, then Edit > Copy. Paste the text in a reply to this Discussion.

  • Hard drive constantly spinning up and down when asleep

    Hi all,
I have a problem with an external USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my Mac mini (late 2012).
When I put the computer to sleep the drive spins up to speed, stops, then immediately starts to spin up again. This goes on and on.
I understand that drives will periodically spin up when asleep for spotlight indexing etc. However this seems like strange behaviour, it just repeats spinning up and down in an endless cycle.
I have had the drive for a while now, as my time machine backup. Interestingly this problem only started after I rearranged my desk when I set up a second monitor. I have a USB 3.0 drive (my scratch disk) that behaves normally.
I have drives set to not sleep in preferences.
I have searched around but can only find posts about people not wanting to wait for drives to spin up when they open finder etc.
What do you think? Could the drive be on its way out? It is a Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb in an Iomega enclosure, for information...
    I appreciate any help,
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi BDAqua,
I should have noticed this earlier but it appears the problem is with the mini waking from sleep and thus causing the drives to wake.
When I put the mini top sleep (without the external drives powered on) it constantly wakes and sleeps. The displays dont come back on (untiul you click the mouse or hit a key etc.) but you can hear the internal drive spin up and the sleep light comes on, then goes back to blinking until it wakes again.
I have realised that it must be due to the second monitor that I have connected via the mini display port. It is connected using a mini display port to hdmi cable I bought from play.com. Something to do with the  display and thunderbolt is casuing the sleep function to misbehave, I think.
Here is the console log that was created after sleeping the mini, allowing it to go through its weird sleep/wake cycle then fully waking it up again.
Hope that makes sense, it is late and I am tired!
    Thanks for all your help.
    Mike

  • Firewire Drive Randomly Spins Up

I did a quick search and found that people were having issues with their external drives spinning down randomly, however, is anyone having the issue where the drive spins up?
I have a 500GB LaCie D2 connected via Firewire 800 to my Mac Pro. I currently have "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible," as I did in Tiger. I have 5 drives (4 internal, 1 external), and my computer gets rather loud if all drives are running at once. Anyway, after upgrading to Leopard, this external LaCie drive randomly spins up and since I think the drive is slowly giving up the ghost, it doesn't sound pretty.
Is there a way to prevent this spin up from occurring? I am planning on getting another external drive (not LaCie), but I was thinking of using my current external as an AirPort Disk once that works with Time Machine.
    Thanks.

    William Lloyd wrote:
Drives can spin up for any number of reasons. Often when you get a file->open dialog.
This didn't happen to me when I was using Tiger. The drive would only spin up when I actually double clicked on the desktop icon and actively accessed it. Getting a dialog box in Safari wouldn't cause it to spin up because Safari wasn't accessing anything on that drive.
After installing Leopard, the drive will spin up when I launch Mail, when a save dialog box pops up in Safari, but mostly it happens at random times when I'm not even on the computer.
You know it's easier on a drive to keep it running constantly than to select that it spin down.
The reason I have this specific drive spinning down is because it sounds like metal on a grinding wheel after spinning for a while. It's not a pleasant sound at all. Until I can get a new drive, I need it to not sound like I'm sharpening knives.
Also, I have 5 drives total (4 internal, 1 external), and that amounts for a lot of noise. Is there a way to control which drives spin down and which spin up? That would be extremely helpful.

  • Epson printer and driver, all jobs "stopped due to filter errors"

My printer broke, so I'm trying to use my roommate's Epson WorkForce 520 with my Arch64 system. I grabbed the 64-bit driver rpm from Epson, extracted and copied everything to /opt (no readme for a manual installation, but the paths in the PPD point to having the files installed there). The driver came with some libraries, so I added their path to ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig. Successfully added the printer in CUPS, but trying to print anything gives me "/opt/..../epson_inkjet_printer_filter failed". I checked the permissions on the filter, they're 755 and it's executable. The CUPS error log shows "Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details" followed by debug spew which doesn't clarify the issue for me, attached below.
I searched on the problem, found some people blaming it on issues with the update to CUPS 1.4 which have since been addressed, and others who were told to switch to using opensource drivers. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be an option for me; Gutenprint and foomatic have drivers for the 500 but they don't support the 520; the only driver I can find that does is the one from Epson.
Anyway, I'm really hoping this is an issue with my CUPS/printer config, or that I missed some critical step in manually installing the printer drivers, and not that Epson's driver is just broken. If anyone has any ideas I'd be much obliged, let me know if you need more information.
Here's the complete error log from when I try to print. Sorry if it's obnoxiously long, I'm not sure which parts are relevant:

You could recompile the filter with --enable-debug. It will create the file "/tmp/epson-inkjet-printer-filter.txt" if you call the filter...
I installed the driver from epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-635-nx625-series-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.src.rpm and compiled the filter by myself. But I get an error if the filter will load the closed source core library of epson.

It was no missing library. It is a really strange problem here. If I build it with my PKGBUILD it will give the error above.

    Edited 2:
Ok, I found the problem. Arch's makepkg will add an "--as-needed" to LDFLAGS and the binary won't be linked to libstdc++.so.6 and libgcc_s.so because the binary does not need it but the core library of epson. I overwrite that with "--as-no-needed" and now it works. Added the package: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=42294

  • Iphoto stopped working, all i get now is spinning beach ball of death.help!

iphoto stopped working, all i get know is spinning beach ball of death.please help.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How can I stop laptop freeze/spinning wheel every time I click or type etc?

I sporadically get momentary freeze and or spinning wheel when I try to do anything on the laptop. Sometimes it works fine but the majority of the time it stops on every click. The problem has been persistant for a week or two, possibly related to a mavericks update.
The dock sometimes doesn't work either - it is unresponsive, an appl will bounce but not open.
This occurs enough to be very frustrating and gets in the way of my work.

I backed up all my files, emptied the hard drive and uninstalled/reinstalled Mavericks.
This created another problem - the laptop would not boot up and I got a flashing question mark in a folder on the screen. Eventually I was able to reinstall Lion which then fixed that problem. For a short while there were no problems of latency either (maybe 20 minutes).
I have done disc scans/repairs and there were no problems there. I did an extensive hardware scan as well and no problems were detected.
I don't know much about Apple computers - I've only had this for just under two years and I have had no problems so I'm quite illiterate regarding how to repair it or scan for problems. Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
    <Edited by Host>
Incidentally I have had no freezes since starting to write this post - Lion seems to be more stable than Mavericks was.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Disk drive wont spin

    Hey all,
    I have got a prob.
I have a dvd with 4.6 gigs of avi movies on it. When i try to drag all or any of the files off the dvd(in finder) onto the desktop, the drive spools up like it usually does and the progress meter starts going up. It usually gets quickly to about 50-80 percent and the drive stops spinning and the meter stops. Then I get a messege
"Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "filename" could not be read or written (Error code -36)"
The wierd thing is if I drag any of the files individually , it does the same with all off them. When the drive is spinning it copies no prob but all of the sudden it just stops and so does the copying. Sometimes the drive never spools up and the progress stays at zero followed by the error messege.
Another thing is when I play the movies right off the disc. Same thing. If the drive spools up it will play a good 5 minutes off the movie then the drive stops spinning and movie freezes. And sometimes when I open the movie off the disc the drive never spools up and it plays about 10 seconds of the movie the freezes.
Not sure what is happening here...
    Any help would be excellent
    Mac Mini 1.42GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It really sounds like the DVD is damaged in some way.
I do have a suggestion, but I'm not sure it'll work : insert the DVD and let it mount on your Desktop. Then, open Disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities), and select (highlight) the disc in the left panel. In File > New, you should see three options :
    Blank Disk Image
    Disk Image from Folder
    and
Disk Image from your disc. You want to select that option, and then you can choose the name, location, and format for the disk image. I think you can leave "Compressed" and for encryption, "None". Now, click Save.
Once it's done (if it succeeds), you could try to mount that disk image (double-click the .dmg which you will find where you saved the image), and see if you can transfer the files from there.
Please let us know if it works (or doesn't).

  • MBA supposed to be sleeping but hard drive is spinning.

Help. This has happened to me more than 5 times so I know this is not a fluke:
When I leave my office, i put my MacBook Air to sleep and put it in my briefcase. When I arrive home (an hour later) my MBA is super hot and sounds like the hard drive is spinning. It is literally overheating. It's as if it woke up in my briefcase and the hard drive starts to spin. This makes no sense as i quit all the applications and make sure the shell is actually closed.
This does not happen EVERY time but has now happened enough that i know it is not a fluke. The only way to stop the hard drive from spinning is to hold the power button down until the computer just shuts down. Has anyone else had this issue? Sometimes the computer is so hot that i actually smell "burning". Clearly if i didn't notice it for 2 or 3 hours the MBA would just "melt down".
    Any ideas?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
    "smell burning" isn't good obviously.
Try Resetting the System Management Controller
If that doesn't make a difference, definitely take it to an Apple store or Apple certified repair provider.
Make sure all you don't have any applications running when you put the MB Air to sleep.

  • [solved] Hard drives continually spinning up (smartd polling?)

My system boots off a USB stick. Additionally, I have four hard drives configured as two RAID1 arrays:
    /dev/md/backup uses a Seagate ST31500341AS and a WD2003FZEX
    /dev/md/data uses a Hitachi HUA723020ALA640 and a WD2001FASS
Because these are seldom used, to save power, I have these configured to spin down after 20 minutes of inactivity. However, every half hour, the Seagate and Hitachi drives spin up, coinciding with smartd events in journalctl. For example,
    Jun 26 11:34:33 localhost smartd[2561]: Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel changed from 65 to 66
    Jun 26 11:34:33 localhost smartd[2561]: Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 35 to 34
    Jun 26 11:34:33 localhost smartd[2561]: Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 119 to 122
I do, however, have "-n standby" specified for all four drives in /etc/smartd.conf (see listing below).
Oddly, the WD drives remain spun down; just the Seagate and Hitachi drives are spinning up. I would like to avoid their spinning up every half hour (shortened lifespan and all that). One possibility is to increase smartd's polling interval, but that seems like more of a workaround. Does anyone have any better suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Apparently, I had an uncommented DEVICESCAN in the middle of /etc/smartd.conf. Commenting it out and restarting smartd fixed the issue.

  • USB drive keeps spinning

I have 2 USB drives connected to AEBS. They are working fine. I just don't know why they keep spinning even after many hours of non use. Usually, when the drives are not connected to AEBS, they stop spinning after a certain amount of time of inactivity. I've ejected the disks and they stay on. I suppose I could turn them off, but that seams to defeat the purpose of having the drive somewhere else and not having to connect it to the computer.
    Thanks for any help.

yeah this has been an issue that keeps popping up with a lot of peoples drives. some spin down, some down't it seems.
hopefully Apple can correct this with a software update that allows all drives with this feature to be able to spin down.
Probably not a solution until Apple creates one unfortunately. good luck!
I don't find it too hard to turn a drive off and on, but I understand your point.
My 500gb f a porsche lacie drive doesn't really shut itself, but it does seem like it is in fact spinning down after a certain amount of time, i can leave it on, and come back a few hours later, go to access the drive and it seems like it is coming back up, but maybe not.

  • Stopping the harddrive spinning down

On my powermac it was not such an issue but on my intel iMac is you leave the computer even for just 1 minute the harddrive spins down so when you goto open a mail or whatever you have to wait with the spinning ball for the drive to spin back up.
I have the 'put drive to sleep' unticked so its something else.
Is there anyway to stop this annoying thing, I wouldn't mind after 10 minutes or what ever but 1 minute is just silly.

    Hello again Gary,
"The downside is the mac won't go to sleep now lol."
Here is the kind of command you could try:
    sudo pmset -a displaysleep 10 disksleep 20 sleep 30
(but check the man pmset "arguments" names, in case they are different in Intel Tiger).
Another way, since you have the Developer Tools installed, is to edit the preference file with Property List Editor.
You should definitely try to remove this .plist, and when you're at it, this one too
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    just in case.
Logout/login, every Energy Saver settings should be reset to default, see if it works.
    Also:
    Testing corrupted preferences:
    Try this Terminal command
    sudo find /Library/Preferences -name *plist -exec plutil {} \;;find ~/Library/Preferences -name *plist -exec plutil {} \;
it should work on your system.
    Results:
Delete any pref file that has no "OK" in front of it.
Unless there is a new kind of sleep bug with the new Macs,
it should work as intended in Energy Saver.
Try restarting too, instead of just logging out, as these settings belong to the whole system after all.
    Cheers!
(Lars, yes, a nice little piece of software. I like OnyX and TinkerTool System too...)
