AFP issue

I have a Novel server 4.1 and some tiger machines. I need them to talk over AFP. Is there any way i could do that? Are there any third party softwares (AFP protocol) available for this??
Thanks in advance.

I see its been a while since you posted this so this info maybe a little late, but I know Prosoft engineering makes AFP services for Novell unfortunately it is for NW5:
http://www.prosofteng.com/support/netware5services.php
Also this same company offers an IP client for Mac X which could help you out.
Luckily when we tried our foray into the Mac Novell relation it was with Netware5. I want to tell you though that we never had a lot of luck pulling it off. We ended up going with Linux Netatalk at first and then moved over to OSX Server not too much later.

  • MyBook World Edition - Time Machine - AFP Issue

So after 60 mins on the phone with the ppl at WD, it was determined that i most likely have any issue with Time Machine accessing the wd_backup partition of my mybookworld NAS drive. Simply put - I can access the drive via SMB ('cept for the backup partition - which is what i want anyway) but TM (nor the finder) wont access the backup partition at all.
WD says its an AFP issue. Ive spent all day searching google and forums and I cant find a good answer. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Sorry I'm not adding anything positive but I too am having problems with my MBW NAS drive. Every time I try to connect with the "Public" drive, I get the "The operation cannot be completed because the original file for "Public" cannot be found." I connect through SMB as well but it is annoying. I never been able to connect to MBW-Backup. Again, sorry to piggyback but just wanted to let you know you are not alone in your search.

  • AFP issues with 10.4.6

    Hi,
I have network of 3 Macs running 10.4.6. Two are wired and the other is my laptop and it is wireless. When I try to connect with AFP to any maching (wired to wired, wired to wireless, or wireless to wired) I get the following error:
    "Connection Failure
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again."
I get the same message when I try to connect by IP address or name.
I have IPv6 and Appletalk turned off on all machines. All machines also have static IPs and DNS info entered manually. If I scan each machine with NMAP port 548 is open and I can telnet to it. I also can see the server when I browse the network for AFP servers.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

Hmm thinking twice about it, sounds like MacOS-BSD idiosyncrasy...
Every time we update MacOS X the I/O and network catalog is being reset, returning most of the settings to default values (at least when dealing with default (not customized) installations)...
Your issue regarding TCP sendspace sounds like a good feedback to Apple.
I'll fire an email to the developers...
btw: mark your question as answered, it's the most interesting AFP issue I've read so far

  • 10.4.6 AFP issues?

Here's something that came across my desk a few days ago. . . Sort of "The Nail of Truth".
    HELIOS TechInfo #099
    ====================
    Wed, 06 Apr 2006
Mac OS X to 10.4.6 Upgrade Warning
The Apple Mac OS X client upgrade to 10.4.6 introduces several problems which have been reported by customers and reproduced by HELIOS. We strongly recommend not to upgrade to 10.4.6 until a solution for the following problems is available:
    1. Some files and folders may be locked within the 10.4.6 Finder The 10.4.6 Finder uses the FinderInfo information to detect locked files and folders. The original behavior on Mac OS 8/9 was that the locked file content could be changed and the locked file/folder not be renamed/deleted. Somehow the OS X 10.4.6 shows a read-only icon for a
locked folder and does not allow to save files and folders ithin this locked folder.
    Workaround:
The FinderInfo locked information can be displayed with "dt ls -l". A workaround is to unlock the locked files/folders via the following dt commands.
$ dt set a-l foldername or filename
The problem occurs with Apple based AFP servers as well with HELIOS AFP servers. The workaround using the dt tools is only available using when HELIOS products.
    2. Photoshop crashes when saving on AFP network volumes
The problem occurs with Apple based AFP servers as well with HELIOS AFP servers. HELIOS can reproduce this problem with PhotoShop 7, CS, CS2.

Here's a little work from Group Logic about this issue:
Group Logic has determined the cause of the Photoshop crash that occurs when saving file to an AFP server from a Mac OS X 10.4.6 client. Photoshop appears to be using an older Carbon call that creates and retrieves Mac OS 9 comments instead of the Mac OS X comments stored in the .DS_Store file. Mac OS X 10.4.6 changes how those older comments are handled which triggers a crash in Photoshop.
    Details:
The following is a summary of the actions which cause Photoshop to
    crash:
Copy a Photoshop file with no comments to the server
    Open it in Photoshop
    Save it in Photoshop
Photoshop will request the OS 9 comments from the server
Server returns "no comments" because they don't exist
Photoshop writes comments to the server, usually over 128 or 200 characters (depends on what file format is used)
    Resave the file in Photoshop
Photoshop will request the OS 9 comments from the server
Mac OS X Server returns "no comments" whereas ExtremeZ-IP, SFM, Helios and Mac OS 9 return the actual comments
Save completes to the Mac OS X Server or crashes on all other AFP
    Servers.
The AFP 3.1 specification supports comments of up to 199 characters. In addition we found that AFP 2.2 in Mac OS 9 personal file sharing allows comments of up to 199 characters. However servers running Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 do not permit comments over 128 characters (this may be true in earlier versions of Mac OS X, but we did not test them).
These are the facts we were able to determine via packet traces and standard testing:
    1. If a client wants tries to add an OS 9 comment that is greater than 128 characters to a file on a Mac OS X 10.4 AFP server, the server will return success but not modify the existing comment. The server simply ignores the request.
    2. Photoshop will not crash if an AFP server returns OS 9 comments that are less than 128 characters
From this evidence we have come to the conclusion that Photoshop incorrectly assumes that OS 9 comments cannot be larger than 128 characters. Since the 10.4.6 upgrade it appears that the OS X client will correctly return to Photoshop the entire 199 characters of the Mac OS 9 comment. Since ExtremeZ-IP and most other AFP servers conform to the AFP spec they do send the full 199 characters allowed. Upon receiving the comment from the AFP server, the Mac OS X 10.4.6 AFP client will pass the comment to the Carbon File Manager, and it in turn to Photoshop which will then crash.
This is not seen when saving to the XServe, because it never creates comments if they exceed 128 characters. Therefore the change to the AFP client in Mac OS X 10.4.6 would not affect Photoshop when saving to an Xserve.
    Fix:
Although ExtremeZ-IP is following the AFP 3 specification, Group Logic will release an ExtremeZ-IP hotfix next week that will workaround the issue. In order to have the least impact on any other applications, we will add an optional setting called PhotoshopCompatibleComments. When
that setting is enabled, ExtremeZ-IP will truncate all Mac OS 9 comments to 128 characters. That will prevent the bug in Photoshop from being triggered until Apple or Adobe fix the issue.
This comes from Charles Kim @ Group Logic who's helped me with issues in the past.

  • Sharing Files AFP issue

    Hi,
in my LAN there are 12 macs , some of them got 10.4.5 , others 10.4.11, one has Os 9.2.2
Every machine is sharing files via AFP/SMB (System Preferences /Sharing) , all machines are listed correctly in Network Finder window.
The issue is here: It happens that sometimes , in a random way, some folders (shared or not ..es.Application folder) of a certain machine (for example machine A) are moved to Machine B !!!
No strange activities are recorded in Logs (system, console, afp, smb) except for a restart of afp sharing when a Os9 try to connect to (It fails to connect but don't mind).
Some machines had moved also their Library/Preference folder to another location!
To connect to a share i use a guest account to limit users possibilities,
so i don't understand why some folder that requires special permissions should copy o move to another location..
    Any Idea?

since this issue Os9 client are not enable to connect anymore...
OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.48 machine.
"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."

  • AFP Issues - SLES 10 SP3 / OES2 SP2

I'm having issues with AFP. The service seems to be working then will stop at least once a day. If i do a 'rcnovell-afptcpd status' it shows "unused". Sometimes I can get the service to work again by 'rcnovell-afptcpd start', but in some cases it won't restart until I reboot the server.
I'm using novell-afptcpd-1.1.0-0.13.5 is there a newer version? Is there a configuration problem that could be causing this?

  • Serious AFP issues

Running 10.5.5 on a brand new xServe. Seriously.. what is wrong with leopard server? This is my first experience with it and I am not happy.
I am simply running AFP with 4 share points. No other services. Clients get disconnected for no reason. Clients who get disconnected cant reconnect without restarting (twice for some reason) or changing their static IP address. ARD connection goes on and off on a whim. Sometimes ARD sees the computer, but wont let me connect and sometimes it doesnt even list the server at all. I can't even ssh in to the server at all. And this is all inside one single network.

  • Afp issue accessing NAS

I have a Thecus NAS and have a few folders setup on the NAS that have read/write privileges for "everyone." I connect to these folders via afp://servername/share and have had no problems until today. Now, the folders in one of the shares shows a red circle w/ a dahs in it which means I don't have privileges to view the files on any folder . I do a Get Info on that folder and it shows that "everyone" has read/write access to this folder. Weird. I then disconnect the share and reconnect to it via smb and that works fine (the share's folder also have read/write access for "smbusers"). Here's the other weird thing - the other shares I have on this NAS that are also setup similarly can be accessed/viewed fine. So not sure what's going on with just this share and why all of a sudden today? I haven't changed any permissions or settings on the NAS or share today. Thanks!

    Hi,
you could try this link if you are using CE SP 3:

(Publishing Web Services from the SAP NetWeaver Administrator)
The web services are not published explicitly in CE7.1 3.
For explicitly defining your service registry as destination to use from VC you could read this:

(  To use Web services and enterprise services as a source of data in your models, their destinations are correctly defined in NetWeaver Administrator. If you are locating these Web services by querying the Services Registry, you also need to configure a connection to the Services Registry (as well as defining a destination for the Services Registry). For more information, see Creating Web Service Physical Destinations.)

  • AFP issue with volume names

With Mac OS X 10.5 Server, I attempted to create a share point. I think I've found a bug.
I have 3 drives, with names of ServerHD, ServerHD2, and ServerHD3. Creating a share point on ServerHD2 or ServerHD3 fails, with the share point showing up in the list, but selecting it results in a message at the bottom of the Server Admin window of "The selected file system could not be found".
A closer looks at the path shows things like "/Volumes/ServerHD/3/Shared Items/Music" - note the / between ServerHD and 3 - there isn't a slash in the drive name.
Renaming the drives with a space before the number fixes the problem, but I still have the failed share points in the list, and I can't find a way to make the bad ones go away.

I've had essentially the same issue and thought that this may repair the issue in terms of creating a folder and then unsharing and I've not had and success. Seems like we may need to resort to other means.
The method I used was to actually use dscl and then navigate into /Local/Default/SharePoints and to delete out the erroneous shares. Seems to have done the trick.

  • Afp issues - 10.4.6 - finder freezes

Not only can I no longer connect to other macs in my airport network, after I get the error message that the server doesn't exist or is not available (which it is since i see it running right in the next room and it is doing all the network things that it always does) then i get the spinning pizza and i have to "force quit" the finder. Any ideas?

    Hello Starfish Day
are you connecting to these servers by using the finder command +K and entering the IP address of the server? If not try that and see if you get the same result.

  • Firefox 3.6 not compatible with home directories stored on AFP file server

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have discovered, at least in my situation, that Firefox 3.6 does not work with user home directories stored on AFP file servers.
My network consists of PPC 10.411 clients and a Mac OS X 10.62 server. User home directories are stored on the server, the user is logged into a "Golden Triangle" LDAP domain, where the Mac clients bind to a OSX Server and the OSX Server is a member of the Active Directory domain.
Worked perfectly fine on Firefox 3.57, now in 3.6 it will either not launch, will freeze with the beachball or will only show the Firefox window and not the main web browser.
This has happened before with a 3.0x update from a few months ago. I have posted a bug in the Bugzilla database and have outlined the bug on my personal MacPCSMB blog.

There is an update on the FireFox hosted AFP issue that I have uncovered:
When users are rolled back with Firefox 3.57 (by installing FF 3.57 over 43.6) the following issue occurs:
You launch Firefox and you get an error that states "XML scripting is not working; Firefox cannot open the window".
This basically means that the plug-ins for Firefox 3.6 are still in the user's Firefox profile directory. These new plug-ins are not compatible with Firefox 3.57. You will have to manually go into the user's home directory and remove their profile folder and extract a specific file. The issue is that the user will have to be able to have access to their bookmarks. If you delete the profile folder their bookmarks are gone, though that is simpler to do.
It looks like Mozilla significantly changed the profile folder setup in FF 3.6, so a profile rollback or deletion is necessary.
If you DO NOT have a good backup:
To solve this issue do the following. This guide assumes you have the users home directory stored on an AFP server and you have open directory logins:
    1. The Firefox profile is located here according to Mozilla: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles . The Mac OS X Directory is located at /~username/library/application support/Firefox.
    2. Find and COPY the places.sqlite file. This is the Firefox bookmarks and history database. This file is very important to back up.
    3. Now take the user's Firefox profile and TRASH it.
    4. Now either have the user launch Firefox with their Open Directory login, or change their password and login yourself. Open Firefox and then after it full loads quit the program. Copy the places.sqlite file back into the Firefox profile folder. You will have to do this manually for every user unless if you make an AppleScript to take care of this.
    5. The program will now work again.
The second option is to go into Retrospect or Time Machine (or whatever backup solution you use) and restore the user's profile direct to a point in time before Firefox was updated to 3.6 and then subsequently reverted back to 3.57. How to use backup software is way beyond the scope of this blog posting.
    Thanks

  • 10.5.4 Server/10.3.9 Client user home mounting issue

Hi all, hopefully someone can help me out with this. I know this might be an AFP issue but if you read on you'll see why I think it might be Open Directory's "fault".
I'm the admin at a school running Leopard Server with Leopard, Tiger, and Panther clients. The server is running Open Directory and is the home for all user accounts.
Leopard and Tiger clients can log in fine. Panther clients begin to login, and between the visual acceptance of the password and actually showing the user's desktop, something goes wrong. It informs me that the user cannot log in at this time because an error occurred, and that the home directory is on an AFP or SMB share.
It's an AFP share, but I don't understand why the Leopard and Tiger clients are kosher and the Panther ones are not.
    Advice?
I've already tried turning Kerberos on/off, etc. I have also discovered that I can mount AFP volumes just fine if I log in locally and then connect to the user's account manually via Go-->Connect to Server.
    Thanks!

Oops, While playing around I had restricted the service access to just 2 accounts that were not the ones i was testing network logons from. doh!

  • Mac OS X 10.6.8 Issues with storage

    Hi All,
Be merecefull, first time posting here.
Have got a server with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server, which is profiding following services:
    • Open Directory
    • DNS
    • AFP
Issues is with AFP more specifically with shares on Drobo box which is connected over FireWire. It serves as Share location and FileMaker server file database. Users reported issues with performance while accessing files and are unable to save some of the files onto it.
I performed Verify Disk form Disk Utility and it reported "Invalid sibling link. The volume Drobo was found corrupt and needs to be repaired." Repair Disk isn't fixing the issues and stopps performing repair after 20 min.
I had same issues on the same server while back, but back then we had Hive drive attached on FireWire and it had exactly same issues. We changed it to Drobo and restored files from backup.
Could please someone explain why these issues are occruing in first place as this starts to appear a regular problem, and what could be a way to avoid this in future.
We are planning to attempt disk repair from install media or Single User mode. Any better sollutions are wellcomed!
    All bes,
    Aigars.

My questions are: Was the problem with iTunes playing slowly an iTunes issue? Or was the root problem from the upgrade to OS X 10.6.3, and therefor an OS problem?
Even if a user has access to the beta, and knew of an issue they are working on, he/she would not be able to comment on it here. This forum is only for OS's that have been released and is covered by a Terms of Use agreement.
Sounds like you got an unintended update in some sort of fluke accident, and since you've removed it, there's no way of telling what caused the problem or if it was the OS or program or both.

  • AFP Slow authentication

    In a high school enviroment...
    The server...
    Xserve Dual 2.3 / 2GB Ram / 3 - 250GB HD / Link Aggragate 2GB uplink
    Providing AFP/DHCP/LDAP/WINDOWS on 10.4.8 Server
    The clients...
Mixture of 125 managed Intel / G4 iMac units on 10.4.8 connected to 100MB managed switch untis. Additonal 125 Windows XP clients with roaming profiles.
    The issue...
When all my clients are authenticating and attempting to open applications at about the same time, the managed AFP clients drop speed dramtically. A normal 20 second login goes to two minutes and application launch speed drops to an additional four minutes. I have only two AFP automounts per user and some managed client settings coming from the server. The Home folder location is one of the automounts and sits by itself on one of the 250GB drives. My switch units show very little utilization or network traffic. I was wondering is my bottleneck is max TCP connections? or Poor performance on my SATA drive?
The school is very frustrated as it takes over 10 minutes to get a class logged in and functional in any MAC lab or PC lab during this time. Any ideas appreciated!
    PowerBook 1.67ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks for some ideas...
I have tried Network Home Relocator but it completely slowed down my login times from 4 mins to 15 mins! I had no success in my attempts to make it work and speed up the login or the application launch.
The windows PC's login a little faster but they are not pulling as much data off the server so I expected that to be the case. If a MAC unit takes 4 mins to login the PC takes 2. Normally the login speed for MAC is 15 seconds and the PC about one minute even though the MAC is pulling more data from the server, but that is why I suspect this to be an AFP issue.
My thoughts were to goto some type of RAID setup but alas I have no money for testing gear and as this is a production server I can't just take it down, backup data, reconfigure to RAID and re-load. I have an engineer sending me some test equipment in the next few weeks and I will try to move my HOMES to RAID array.
The network switch units are all CISCO 3750 units.
The funny part is, in Period two classes everything is slowwww... But anyother time of the day, same load on the server and network, everything is OK. I can find nothing that would clog the network or slow the server down. Very frustrating...
