AFP not letting users log in

AFP is not allowing the Open Directory users to authenticate and access the server of you use Go to Server. From the Finder sidebar it will work.

I have the same problem. AFP seems to be unresponsive... the service acts in a strange way...
Look how the server reacts at the following commands:

AFP takes an unusual amount of time to reports a "RUNNING" state and it can take several minutes to the client to get prompted with an authentication window.
I realized that, even if you try to connect to the server using the IP address, you need to have a working DNS service (that resolves the server hostname to the client) to get a near-instant response from the AFP server.
I don't really understand why, because after analyzing the network traffic, the client doesn't seem to query the DNS server to resolve the IP address of the AFP server...
From the sidebar, we can click on connect as and enter our credentials immediately, but we face the same waiting time before we can see the share points.
