AFP over the internet: error -36 after 10.5.2

I've been using port forwarding and "File Sharing" (AFP) to transfer files between my two computers on different networks. After installing 10.5.2 on both computers (at least, I think it started after 10.5.2), when I try to connect, I get this error: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'afp://xx.xx.xx.xx' could not be read or written."
Is it just me with this problem? Anyone have an idea for a solution? Thanks in advance.

This file is having difficulty while either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file
may have been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be damaged.
This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.
Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a disk recovery software, such as Disk First Aid to examine the disk. You can try rebooting with all extensions off. Once in a while this will allow you to read the data. The file in question should be restored from a backup that was stored on a different disk. Regular backups can reduce the time to recover from this error.

Im guessing you simply want to know what tool to use to access it. Meaning you access with your windows box with remote desktop - the mac equivalent of that is "screen sharing"
step 1: enable screen sharing on the mac server: system pref -> sharing -> screen sharing
step 2: forward needed ports if behind a router (off the top of my head I believe its port 5900)
step 3: depending on what type of machine you're trying to access from... if from a mac, finder -> go -> connect to server -> vnc://ip_address_or_domain_name ------ if from a windows or linux box you'll need to get a VNC client (see google for those)

Can not view video over the Internet on WVC80N

I set up the web cam, set up the port forward etc so now I am able to:
   1. view/change web cam settings inside my home network.
   2. view video inside my home network.
   3. view/change web cam settings over the Internet.
But I am not able to view video over Internet. Every time I did so (using IE browser), after clicking the view video button, I got an error : There are too many user connections or the device is busy, please try again latter.
Anyone has a fix on this? I set up port forwarding on port 1024 (that's how I can chage settings over Internet).
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Linksys tech support but they could not find the reason.

Who is your ISP? How you are trying to access your Camera from the remote location? Along with Port 1024 you need to do port forwarding for port 80 on your router for the Cameras IP address. As WVC80N works on your HTTP Port.
To access your camera from the Remote location, you need to use http://wan ip:80.

WVC80N - Internet Gateway UPnP discovery failure message \ unable to view over the internet

I have the WVC80N. I recently got the new Comcast modem \ wifi but the Wifi is junk and had a lot of problems (loss connection, range etc) so I had Comcast "bridge" it so I just use my old wifi (LinkSys E1200). I have TZO to handle remote viewing. Everything was working great for about two weeks and we had a power outage. Since then, I have been getting UPnP discovery message (in the status tab of the WVC80N camera site) and I am unable to view over the internet. I get a 502 error usually but today I got extra info: "The socket connection to www.dfgehring.mylinksyscam.com failed.
ErrorCode: 10060. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond."
I had Comcast do a "repair / reset" transmission to the modem and still get the problem.
I found these step on the forum:
1. Home Wirless Rounter administration page, find the UnPn settings and Turn off UnPn and save it. Wait for atleast 30 sec and go the same page and Turn it back on.
2. On your wireless camera Adminstraion page, go to "Options" and find the UnPn if it is already disabled go ahead and "enable" it also "enable" the "Alternate web connection" and save it. If it was already enable please disable it save the settings and enable back on.
The above 2 steps resolved my issue and I could able to view my camera from outside of my home network.
Still no luck. Tried it several times.
Could the power outage reset something on the modem or router to change this?

That's what I thought. The power outage may have set the modem, router or camera settings back to factory defaults causing it to loose connection. First thing first, call comcast and check if the modem is still on bridge mode. The modem may have been set back to a modem/router mode due to power outage.
You may test if the remote access is properly set up in the network by going to http://ping.eu. In that site, you will see your internet ip address, take note of that. Click on port check, enter your internet ip address and the port number you used in the alternate web access port then click Go. If it says closed, there something wrong in the settings of either the router or camera. In that case, I suggest you reset the router and camera and then reconfigure them.

Accessing my Time Capsule hard drive over the internet via iCloud doesn't work.

Hi Everyone,
I have an iCloud account and read recently, that it is possible to acces the hard drive of an Time Capsule over the internet, if "Back to my Mac" is activated on my MacBook an the Time Capsule.
I updated the Time Capsule to Firmware Version 7.6.1 and the Airport Utility to version 6. Actually the Time Capsule HDD is displayes in Finder's Sidebar, when I'm using a forreign internet connection. But when I click on it an error message tells me that a connection to the server (I assume server=Time Capsule) cannot be established. Funnily enough I can access the HDD of my iMac at home.
The Time Capsule network setting is "Bridge Mode" Since I can't deactivate the DNS functionality of my router/mode, an easybox 803 A, unfortunately which I cannot replace, because it is also used for hosting the telephone.
Does anybody have an idea, where the problem could be? Wrong settings in the Time Capsule config or maybe the blocking by the router?

Please consider, that I have absolutely no idea of networking.

I don't know exactly how, but I got it working. I will try to explain, what I did.
1. I used the easybox as DHCP-Server an set the TC to Bridge Mode.
2. Then I gave the TC a fixed IP in the easbybox menu by using it's MAC-address (It seems that the address range has to be either 192.168.X.Y or 10.0.X.Y to make the TC accessable later).
3. I made the TC a DHCP-Server (DHCP only, not also NAT). The IP addess range of the TC starts after it's own IP adress (10.0.0.111) and ends at (10.0.0.250). The IP range of the easybox starts with 10.0.0.1 (it's own) and end with the TC's (10.0.0.111).
4. Then the Airport Utility told me that if I want to share an DHCP range the TC has to be set to a fixed IP setting, which I set up, leaving the IP-address 10.0.0.111 and the Router IP 10.0.0.1 (the easyboxs').
5. Then it worked in my case. Since I don't even know what I did, I'm not shure if it workes under other circumstances.
There are of course many variables. Such as the type of the router and the TC or the kind of the internet connection.

Unable to see Dashboard over the internet (Portal)

Access Time Capsule over the internet

Hey guys! I have a problem. I cannot access my Time Capsule over the internet.
I have a Time Capsule 2013 which connects to the internet using a PPPoE connection and which provides wireless connection to other peripherals in my house.
The TC is running the latest firmware and I've added my iCloud account in AirPort Utility settings, in order to access the TC over the internet, via Back to My Mac.
Whenever I'm away from home, I cannot access the TC.
I see it in Finder's sidebar, but whenever I press the "Connect As.." button I get the following error:
"There was a problem connecting to the server “Time Capsule”.
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
I must add that I have a dynamic IP. Whenever the Time Capsule restarts, it gets a different IP.
Am I missing something?
Please help me. It's really important for me to be able to reach it when I'm away from home.

So the modem is bridged and the TC is doing the PPPoE authentication.. and it gets a public IP on the WAN interface.
The dynamic nature of the IP is not a problem with the BTMM and iCloud type system which should keep the intermediate connection in the cloud up to date.
What about the connection at the other side.. are you getting a public IP.. are you behind a firewall or restricted access? Remember both sides of this have to work.

Remote Access
I would use the public IP and see if it works.. that means you need to check the IP before you leave home or use your phone tether and do the test at home so you can type in the public ip and use direct access .. at least to test it.

Time Capsule - how to gain "over-the-internet" access from Windows 7!

I've been fighting for such a long time with my Time Capsule. I have no idea how to gain access "over-the-internet" on a PC (Windows 7) which is running on another network. My Time Capsule is set up with my Macbook Pro at home running Lion OSX, and i have internet connection. My brother who also uses Macbook has no problems connecting to my Time Capsule - through finder (connect to a server). But how do I gain "over-the-internet" access to my Time Capsule through a PC (Windows 7) from my office? Is there please someone who can guide me step-by-step, how to gain connection to my TC through a PC? Or maybe just an explantaion what has to be done on the PC before this thing can work out! This was the main reason to why i bought Time Capsule - besides of the Time Machine function. I also have an iCloud account (earlier Mobile Me), if that makes any difference.

There is no way to do it from windows direct to the TC.
It only presents AFP to the WAN side. And most ISP block SMB from internet access due to risks. There is AFAIK, no suitable AFP protocol utility for windows at the moment. If you google and find one, be aware it probably will not work to your satisfaction anyway.
You must use a Mac to access AFP but even then it is not a secure protocol and I would recommend against it anyway.
So basically if you had have asked before purchasing, I would have said, TC is unsuitable product. It is a backup drive for a Mac. It is not a NAS.. it is not designed for remote access by any computer other than a Mac. It does not support any other file protocol to the WAN interface.. and no secure protocol even there.
A NAS with Time Machine extensions from QNAP, Synology, Netgear all are designed for web access and are far more suitable. Researching a purchase beforehand is always worthwhile.
Anyway, your choices are.. return the TC and buy something more suited to the job.
Or if return is now impossible sell the TC on ebay.. etc and do the same thing.. buy a more suitable NAS.
Or buy a cheap mac mini (even second hand) and use that for communications with home.
Or, replace your current router with something that includes vpn. This is actually a good and commercially sound decision. VPN is generally used by business to connect to remote locations, because it is secure and will allow the greatest flexibility of connection. How hard or easy depends on the current setup. I would recommend a combined modem router with vpn server if you have adsl. Or for cable you can find plenty of routers with combined vpn. You can also use those for adsl if your ISP allows pppoe with bridged modem. The TC will have to be bridged as well. For other broadband it might be harder to find the right kind of box.
Once you setup a vpn you can access it from work using the appropiate vpn client in your work computer.

How can I download a file over the internet from a WebDAV server?

I am trying to download a file over the internet from a WebDAV server. I've tried doing it with Datasocket as suggested in these articles,

I have the internet toolkit, but don't have the foggiest clue how to use it, and am using LabVIEW 7.1
I am a bit out of my depth here, so any advice welcome.

What is the URL to the website? Is it an FTP site? The articles you referenced are for specific transfer protocols. If the stie you're trying to get to doesn't follow these protocols, then you'll get the error you're seeing. You may have to use ActiveX to control IE and download the files programmatically.

Downloaded the Trial version. It still says the serial number key is invalid. On the iWork page where I am suppose to enter the serial number key, the "Go Back" button is always BOLD, but the "Continue" button remains GREY all the time. The "Continue" button remains grey even after I have completed the key entry. I have to type the "Return" key on my keyboard to force enter the key. The message I get is still "Invalid key".
I have called Apple. The first person helped by asking me to delete certain items in some Folders and it still did not work. I was then connected to a senior person, but I heard over the recording that there were 15 persons waiting on the line. I had to end the call because the wait will take too long.

But why then Nokia seperates according to product codes if a device can be imported and exported anywhere arnd the world? This makes most customer having difficulties after purchase to update the firmware and additional products.
If another product code tagged device arrives in the country which its not meant to be sold? then the customers will face difficulties.I've seen firmware updating issues as a serious matter, since most people are not enjoying these stuffs.

Labview Programmer needed for project work in Milwaukee Area or over the internet

We have a project I need to get done before summers end and we have majotiy of the code. My company builds robotic systems which we use for industrial inspections mainly in the petrochemical industry. These robotic systems work with a ultrasonic systems which we use to take thickness measurements of piping and pressure vessels using ultrasound.   We have the ultrasound equipment and most of the software as said previously, we just need it polished up and some additions made. Our code is a bit more complex but you get the picture.
This position is not a full time position as of yet. We are looking for someone to work with us on a contract basis for now. Best Way To Set Up Screen Sharing Over The Internet

What is the best/simplest way to set up screen sharing over the internet so I can remotely control my Mac at home from my Mac at work? My Mac at work is running 10.5.6, my Mac at home is running 10.4.11.

Get both Macs up to Mac OS X (Leopard). Then use Apple's MobileMe Back-to-my-Mac service.
Or, use iChat screen sharing along with the iChat free 3rd party Chax add-on which allows selected iChat Buddies to auto-accept an iChat screen sharing request. Free AOL Instant Messaging accounts can be used as the iChat accounts.
If you do not want to upgrade all systems to Leopard...
Next would be using the free LogMeIn.com account, or similar service. This will work
The above avoid needing to figure out how you get through the home routers, and provide encrypted screen sharing sessions.
After that you need to arrange for router port forwarding. If you want secure connections, then you should arrange to port forward the SSH port 22, then use ssh tunnels for VNC based screen sharing connections. There are GUI based utilities that will help setting up SSH tunnels. Do some searches over at VersionTracker.com or MacUpdates.com
