AFP uses IPv6 after 10.4.8 ???

I installed 10.4.8 some time ago. All works ok on it. I was tracing network traffic using tcpdump for some other work when I noticed that AFP appears to prefer to use IPv6 after 10.4.8. Is this something new? I looked back in some traces and 10.4.3 didn't do it.

You can turn IPv6 on and off in System Preferences but not tell the system whether it should prefer IPv6 to IPv4. Why does this matter you ask? Consider that 1) OSX installs with IPv6 enabled by default, and 2) there are routers in the world that do not understand IPv6 ... hence my question. If IPv6 is on by default and AFP uses it in preference to IPv4 you will find unexplained failures. For instance in my network, the Airport(s) support IPv6 but if someone plugs into a hardwired ethernet port AFP may not work due to older non-IPv6 router(s).
I've got development work that needs IPv6 and non-development work that needs to be up 24x7 and can live forever without IPv6.
I sure wish Apple would be more forthcoming about what is in any given incremental release. Documentation is sparse to say the least. Even M$ does a better job of telling its users what's in an update (and if AFP has preferred IPv6 all along I guess I need to figure out how it was working before but not now

Connecting using IPv6?

A while ago I posted a question about a problem I had using networked Eudora after upgrading to Tiger from Panther on machines on my network. See the quoted text below first...
I have since found that the only mac on my network that still works using Tiger/network Eudora appears to connect to my 10.3.9 Server using afp and IPv6.
So on the Tiger machines that don't work when I click on the mounted volume I get "Server: afp://192.168.254.100/Email_FS" which is just IPv4 and when I go to the Tiger machine that does work with Eudora and I click on the mounted volume to check how I've connected I get "Server:afp//[fe80:0000:0000:0000:0203:93ff:fe8d:68e4]:Email_FS"
So - I've also tried connecting using IPv6 on the macs that don't work with Eudora - just going to Go -> Network and typing in the IPv6 address to connect to my server - and my mac won't connect that way. (Network preferences IPv6 is enabled)
Anyone have any idea why one of my macs is connecting using IPv6?
Anyone have any idea if this might be the cause of my problem?
Anyone have any idea how I can force my other macs to connect using IPv6 to see if this is the solution to my Eudora problem?

I have just upgraded the system software on an iMac on my network to Tiger from Panther (to 10.4.8 from 10.3.9), and now my Eudora will not check mail - instead it gives an error message.
The mac uses Eudora for mac 6.23 and OSX 10.4.8
My Eudora folders (mail folders) are accessed over the network (mail folders and are on a volume of a MacOSX server 10.3.9), so that they are backed up and can be accessed from any machine. The settings are launched directly by double clicking on an alias to them from the dock.
I have two other macs on the network using this arrangement of Tiger and Eudora 6.23 and they have no problems.
However when I click on my settings file from this particular mac I get the following error message:
44886+ 1(-5000)
An Unknown Error Occurred (90:913)
It is not possible to collect mail.
And then I get a message that I cannot use background threading.
I can see all of the existing mail - I just can't collect new mail or send mail.
- Obviously there are no problems with the pop settings as I can use this settings file to check/send mail from any other machine on my network
- However, on this particular machine I get this error regardless of which Eudora settings I try open and check mail for - including the ones that open successfully across the network from the other OSX 10.4 machines
- I have also created a new settings file/Eudora Folder and copied this across to the network to see if that would open/check mail (it didn't)
- I have also reinstalled Eudora from the .dmg file
- I have run disk permissions on the Mac before and after running the OSX update
- If I copy the settings across to the local hard drive, Eudora works OK - so it seems to be some network setting - although this machine has the same settings as the others (manual NAT IP address).
- I've checked firewall settings, TCP/IP settings and the like to see if I can see any differences between the Tiger machine that will collect mail and the one that won't, but they appear to be configured in the same way
- I've created a new user on the problematic mac and tried to launch from that - doesn't work either
- I've tried throwing away network plist kind of files as well.
Anyone help me out there?

Hi Jermy,
Unlike in ipv4, in ipv6 a static route with only the egress interface should only be used on a point to point interface. This is because ipv4 has concept of proxy arp, which ipv6 doesn't have. For your config to work, you should add the next-hop ipv6 address to your static route as follow:
router:
ipv6 route ::/0 2001:610:1111::2
switch:
ipv6 route ::/0 2001:610:1000::2

AFP Connection Problems after Server Security Update 2009-006

After installing the Security Update 2009-006 on the Server, we have Problems to mount Shares from two differnt AFP-Servers on the Client.
The Client and the Server have a binding to AD.
The Client can connect to Server1 via AFP.
But after this, the connection to Server2 shows the Volumen List from Server1!
Same Problem when the first Connection mounts Server2 and then Server1.
I tried the second connect with DNS-Name and IP-Adress.
There is no Problem when i am useing SMB.
Have anyone a Idea or the same Problem?

In Firefox 4.0 with a Server with a self signed certificate using IPv6 I can not add a "Security Exception" for this certificate.

1. I log onto the server (using IPv6). I get the "Untrusted connection page" saying "This connection is Untrusted"
2. I click on "Add Exception.." under the "I understand the Risks" section.
3. The "Add Security Exception" dialog comes up. soon after the dialog comes up I get an additional "Alert" dialog saying
An exception occured during connection to xxxxxxxxx.
Peer's certificate issuer has been marked as not trusted by the User.
(Error code sec_error_untrusted_issuer).
Please note that this works in Firefox 3.6.16 (in IPv4 and IPv6). It also works in Firefox 4.0 in IPv4 only IPv6 has an issue. What's wrong?

JS can not interact with open dialogs in any way, unless it's a dialog

How do I export an animation from Photoshop with no background, to use in after effects?

Its been a few years since I've used photoshop and after effects together so hoping you can remind me how to do this.
I'm trying to export an animation created in photohop, its frame by frame, no background. I've been exporting it as an image sequence, now I"ve coloured it I need to solve this transparency issue.
Is there a way to export it to use in after effects on top of a background layer.
So I just want to see the character, no background, animation on top of my background layer in after effects, does that make sense??
Please don't say I need to have an alpha channel on each frame, that will take ages, there must be another way.
Please help I need to sort this ASAP

So this makes sense, I tried it, when I import into after effects (here is the psd.)
I get this window not sure what to be selecting, but I tried different things and it still isn't importanting as literally the animation with no background, have I missed something? whats strange is that when I import the psd, what does import is a strange monatage of snippets of the video I'm making in afterfx, not the completely separate animation i made in photoshop which I'm trying to work into the video.

I did not have a DVD handy to burn but I have just created a small 2 minute video and created a Disk Image and also a VIDEO_TS folder, the encoding worked correctly, so it works with some items.

If two of you shared the same contacts you were logged in with the same Apple ID. In order to avoid this you need to use different Apple IDs, and be using separate Macs or separate user accounts on the same Mac.
One or other of you should create a new Apple ID at http://appleid.apple.com for which you will need a non-Apple email address which hasn't been associated with another Apple ID.

Your problem is that the program wants a good video card and a fast hard drive and lots of memory and you have none of the above. If you upgraded the RAM to 8 gigs and installed a solid state hard drive you might make the program useable but the real bottleneck is going to be the Intel HD graphics, which cannot be upgraded.
You do have an open slot to add one 4 gig memory module. This is an easy relatively inexpensive upgrade. See here:

I would try this a step at a time. Next would be the solid state drive. That would cost maybe $150. Post back if you need more help.

So sorry to hear about the trouble with Wi-Fi! Let's get that working the way it should. Could you provide us some more details regarding where this breakdown occurs? Are you having trouble with turning Wi-Fi on or connecting to your Wi-Fi? Are other devices connecting to your Wi-Fi without issue?

Can no longer use pages after upgrade, even after three restorations! Huge inconvenience!!

Can anyone help me with why I can no longer use pages after the latest upgrade to iOS 7.04. I have restored my ipad three times and it still won't work. It s ahuge inconvenience when all my documents are on pages. If you can get back to me as soon as possible that would be great!!

Turn off iCloud for Pages on your mobile device at Settings > Pages > Use iCloud > Off.
Open Pages on your computer and move any documents in iCloud to your desktop for safe keeping.
Navigate to system preferences > iCloud > Manage and check that Pages documents are not taking any space in the cloud, delete them if they are.
Enable iCloud syncing for Pages on your mobile device and launch the App.
If Pages now opens properly, start to add back documents from your desktop one at a time (or in small groups if you have many).

sorry to hear about your troubles, but we will need to have more technical information about your problem to be able to help you:
There may be several reasons that can cause Aperture to crash on start up:
You may have imported an image (or video) in an encoding that Aperture does not support, or that is larger than 2 GB, or that is corrupted and Aperture cannot process it
Your Aperture Library or Preferences may have been corrupted
Or you are having a system wide problem with your machine.
Or you may simple be running out of disk space.
It would help, if you could post the crash log from your last crash. Also, more details on your Aperture Library: Is it managed or references? how large is it? Is it on your system drive or on an external drive?
What have you done, shortly before the trouble started? Have you imported new images or videos? Did you install any plug-ins or any new software, lile Final Cut?
Try, if you can get Aperture to launch, if you defer the generation of Previews: Hold down the SHIFT-key immediately after you start Aperture to prevent preview generation for that session. If a damaged image in your library is preventing normal opening, this may allow you to start Aperture. If this succeeds, try to identify the broken image or video among the images you recently imported and remove it from the library.
