AFP Volume does not unmount.

Hi,
I have just started running Time Machine.
I have a MacBook Pro (current model) and a PowerBook (penultimate model), both running 10.5.1.
I have a firewire drive connected to my PowerBook, and the two laptops are connected via gigabit ethernet.
I would like to use the drive attached to my PowerBook as the backup drive for my MacBook Pro. So far everything has been fine, I haven't had to do any hacks to get Time Machine working over the network. The firewire drives attached to my PowerBook showed up straight away in the list in the Time Machine preferences on my MacBook Pro.
Running backups seem to work fine. Accessing the files on the backup drive manually through finder works fine.
However, the flashy Time Machine GUI causes problems. When you click the Time Machine icon in the dock, the backup drive is first mounted and then I go into the Time Machine interface fine. But, when I exit Time Machine, the backup rive is not unmounted. It stays there in Finder as a mounted disk image. Clicking the eject button next to the drive in finder does not unmount the drive, even though the icon disappears.
When I try to unmount the firewire drive from the PowerBook, it does not let me, it says that the drive is still in use.
Anyone else experiencing this?

{quote}I'm guessing -- and this is only speculation -- that even though the destination drive is unmounted in MBP's Finder, that only unmounts it from Finder and Time Machine is still "using" it.{quote}
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same.
{quote}You might try turning Time Machine off on MBP, then unmounting the destination, and then see if it can be unmounted from PowerBook.
If that works, it would answer your question, but then you'd have to turn TM back on -- a hassle.{quote}
If I'm the only one experiencing this then I suppose I could do a little more troubleshooting. But to be honest, it isn't really a massive problem. Running Time Machine backups do not cause any problems. And browsing the backup files directly in Finder does not cause any problems. So I'm unlikely to want to use the Time Machine UI (in the same way that I have never used Dashboard or Exposé).
If I ever need to use the Time Machine UI to actually restore something, I can mount the FireWire drive physically on the MBP in which case there are no problems.
{quote}Do you have a wi-fi network where you could use the FireWire drive? You might try connecting the FW drive directly to the MBP and allowing TM to recognize it as the destination, then connect it to an always-available machine.{quote}
Yeah, this is the plan in the future, leave the PowerBook and FireWire drive always on and connect to it via wi-fi, I have just been doing tests over ethernet to start with.
I did start by running Time Machine with the drive connected to the MBP, and then accessing via the network later, in the same way as you describe. But it seems as if it is better to use the drive for the first time over the network. If you use it for the first time locally then the .sparesebundle is not created until later.

  • Error 1070023 Configured Disk volume does not exist.

    Hi
I installed Essbase 11.1.1.2 in stand alone mode. When I am trying to start Sample.Basic, I am getting the below error
Error 1002097 Unable to load database Basic.
The App log showed the following error
Error 1070023 Configured Disk volume does not exist.
    Please help..

So everything works when the volume is set to E?
If so, you might be able to use DISKVOLUMES E in the essbase.cfg file which sets a default (for BSO cubes, at least), but you shouldn't have to do that.
The DISKVOLUMES documentation says that the volume that contains your ARBORPATH is the one used by default. Not completely sure I trust that it's up to date, and isn't now ESSBASEPATH or something else, but regardless, do those variable all look to be set correctly? To be honest, that's a longshot, as I'd be surprised if a missing / incorrect value there wouldn't cause bigger problems...

  • 10.5.7 This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

First, 10.5.7 is not showing up in software update. I downloaded both the delta and combo 10.5.7 updates and they both give me "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I've done all the requisite stuff, permissions, volume check, reset PRAM, etc. I've downloaded the updates several times, and they worked on my 2008 iMac and 2007 Macbook Pro, so I know they work. I've searched and searched and can't find a resolution. It's as if there is some signature written to my boot volume that is preventing this update. Applecare was of no help either. Any ideas?

Hi! Im new to this forum and i really dont know if this is the right place for me to say this but i really need some help! • Stuck at 10.4 - Cannot upgrade - Volume does not meet requirements.

I just installed a new hard drive in my 12" Powerbook G4. I did a clean install of Tiger - 10.4 - without any problems. I formatted the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with one partition.
After booting and going through the setup process, I looked for updates. There were some iTunes, Java and DVD player updates, but that was it. I applied those and restarted. I ran software update again, but there were no OS updates. I downloaded the OS 10.4.10 PPC combo updater and ran it, but the hard drive has a red exclamation point with the warning that the update cannot be installed because the volume does not meet the requirements.
I then downloaded the 10.4.1 updater, and I got the same error.
I then zapped the PRAM and rebooted, but I got the same error. I then repaired permissions and rebooted and got the same error.
Then, I again did a clean erase and install of 10.4 from the original Tiger disc, but I'm again getting the same error.
I'd like to get this machine updated to 10.4.10 as soon as possible, but I'm not having any luck.
    Any other suggestions?

This is functionaly the same as an erase and install as my user tip explains:

Mac OS X doesn't offer a "clean install" per se.
How old is your Powerbook G4? If it was released prior to April 25 2005, you need to use the black retail 10.4.0 Installer disk to install Tiger which looks like . If it was released afterwards you need the same disk labeled 10.4.6, or the disk which came with the Powerbook. If you are using another vintage Mac model's installer disk, that won't work, and will yield this error. If you imported data from an Intel Mac via the Migration Assistant you could also have this error. If your hard disk is over 85% full, you may also have this problem. If permissions have not been repaired, or the directory is damaged this error could also happen. Is your data backed up? Do any of these possibly apply to you?

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5
To me, in all such updates, goes without saying maybe: backup, repair permissions, repair your drive (Disk Warrior does more reliable and thorough job, and it comes out to pennies if you don't wait until needed). Clone your system so you can restore or use the backup - just in case.
I'd even do a fresh format after your clone is done and do a full OS clean install and update, and then a quick import from Setup Assistant.
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
    iTunes 10.2 or later recommended
    (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
I'm going to assume there is something with the partitions on the drive, partition table most likely, though I know I've seen others with that error message - doesn't really point to cause, rarely does (make sure latest firmware update etc is sometimes included but again, we know that isn't why).

Hi. I have a Sno Leo server used for Time Machine backups. When I try to add a bew user to the backup, the backup volume does not appear (Time Machine Prefs > Select disk). The backup clients that have been previously set up work as normal.

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select
    Go ▹ Computer
from the menu bar. A window will open showing all mounted volumes. Select the one in question and open the Info window. What is shown as the Format in the General section? If it's not "Mac OS Extended," Time Machine can't back up the volume.

is there a way to install this update?

    Hello
More information would be useful, for example which Mac OS are you running.
On the left menu item  About this Mac provides useful information.
Also did you use Software Update to determine the update?
Using Software Update can ensure you download and install the correct package for your particular Mac and OS version.

Log in to an admin account and then try going to /Library/Receipts/boms and moving this file to the Desktop:
    com.apple.pkg.update.security.2008.006.bom
Then try running Software Update again.

Can you download the 10.5.5 combo, and reinstall it?

  • OS X 10.8.1 update cannot be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

    HI
I had installed mountain lion on my MBP 13" early 2012, but it has lots of issue, when i tryed to up date to 10.8.1 it shows the error "OS X update cannot be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update"
if i run the software update nothis is showing, current os version is 10.8

This did not work for me.
Note, that at one point the Apple developer knew exactly what the problem was and decided not to let us know. If we were tole what the problem was we woud have an idea of how to proceed.
