Afraid automatic update will delete Ipod songs

My old computer crashed permanently. I got a new one and now want to transfer the songs remaining on my Ipod onto the new computer. The problem is that I am afraid when I connect the Ipod, the automatic update will delete all the songs off it (since the new library is currently blank). And I can't turn off automatic update without plugging in the Ipod, since that icon in the bottom right of Itunes won't appear unless it is plugged in.
It's a tricky situation because if I get it wrong once, everything is gone. Any suggestions?

Welcome, Paulli, to the Apple Discussions!
I'll answer your question in just a minute but first I've got to say that I hope you take this as an opportunity to learn a very important lesson: Back up your iTunes library as soon as you can after resolving this situation because right now you are only one glitch of your iPod away from losing your music entirely.
Many people come to the Discussions having lost their music in just such situations and, believe me, it's not a happy time for anyone.
If you place any importance on your playlists and the data they depend on, you will want to include your iTunes Library files in your back-up regimen as well.
Anyways, that's the lecture. The answer to your problem should be found in this post:

Good Luck! But once your music is back on your computer, remember:
Your music is valuable - please back it up!

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music using a thrid-part probram like ne of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.

That really does not work since music is not included in the backup.  See:

  • I have a MacBook 5,1 (13.3" aluminum from 2007 or 2008). Automatic updates will only let me get to OSX 10.5.8.  Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard, Lion 10.6 or even 10.6.8?  Also, will I have any issues with my iPhone if it's updated to iOS 7.1?

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.8 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mountain Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

It appears that the iPod 4 gen is below the cutoff for iOS 7
See http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonesoftwareterms/f/What-Devices-Are-Ios-7-Compatible .htm where it say support for iOS 7 only goes down to iPod 5 gen.

  • Will deleting my songs, then moving them to the recycle bin and leaving them to be downloaded from the cloud get me the version from itunes match?

I've read this somewhere before but the things is, I didn't know this when I first got itunes match and didn't delete the songs and re-download them from the cloud. I just thought it was done so I synced all of my devices. If I go ahead and delete them all now and re-download will all of my songs be the match high quality versions now? If so, do I delete all my music from my devices as well and re-download or will it automatically change the songs on there to the high quality by simply synching them? ..Or did I screw everything up by not downloading and synching from the start?
    Please help, thanks!

    Hi,
Your main computer will have your original tracks. All your synced devices will have the matched/uploaded versions.
To get the benefit of the upgraded tracks on your main library, you need to delete the original and then download the matched version. You don't need to do anything with uploaded songs.
Ps make sure you have a backup of your original songs.

  • Automatic Updater will not shut off-keeps freezing computer up

I am on hughesnet, and have a 300 meg daily limit.
Twice now, I have had the automatic updater download updates at the wrong time, and both time it has taken me over my limit, and shutmy speed down to 14.4 kps as a result.
I am going to the updater section in system preferences, and turning the automatic downloading of critical files off, but the system resets itself when the computer is shut off, then turned on again.
Is there a workaround for this?
    Thanks.

    That should not be happening.
Are you running the system as an administrator?
My box is unchecked and it stays that way.
It might be a corrupted .plist - - there are two of them
One in the main library and one in your local user library in the preferences folder
The name of the files is
    com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
You can drag it onto your desktop and then reboot to create a new .plist.
    See if that helps.

I got my ipod for mothers day and my daughter as already put some songs on it  for me and I bought new songs from itunes and it didn't automaticlly sync to my ipod if i go to sync them it said all my music that is already on my ipod will be deleted. I don;t won't my music my daughter put in it deleted what can i do?

You and your daughter want to enable homeshare in iTunes on BOTH of your computers. Mac or PC. Then you will be able to see your daughter's library. The songs you want to keep just drag to your own library. Then you can diable homesharing if you want. Hope this helps.

  • How do i sync my ipod to my new computer it tells me if i sync it will delete the songs and load playlist from computer what has no songs.

How do I sync my song from my ipod nano to my new computer?

I found this post from a long time ago:
iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
    iTunes & iPod software

    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Updating will delete music

i have gotten the error that many of you guys have had (with updating the ipod software)
when i plug in my ipod it says i need to update the software for it so i do that and it says i have and error
im going to restore my ipod in a little bit. i know it deletes all the stuff off of my ipod...... but does it delete everything off of the itunes on my computer too? or only my ipod?

    Hi purplee!
Restoring will only affect your iPod (that's what it's menat to do), and your iTunes library should be fine.
I cannot promise you that absolutely no failures in the restoring process will occur, however. It's possible that somehow the restoring process would affect the iTunes library.
The restoring process to your iPod is meant to only affect your iPod, though, and I would seriously doubt in a normal situation anything wrong would occur to your iTunes library.
    Good luck!

  • ITunes automatically updates some of my songs with unwanted information

Ok, so iTunes automatically changes info back to original once I play after already changing it in "get info" for some of my artists. e.g. "California Love", by 2Pac is displayed as the artist being "2Pac, Dr. Dre & Roger Troutman". So I go into "get info" and change it to the artist as just 2Pac. However, once it gets played in iTunes it changes itself back. This is a pain in the arse because I like it to be just one artist for easy access and play-through on my iPod. I don't want to create playlists for the artists and albums that do this either because I don't like the clutter. Please help and tell me if you need my situation clarified beacause I'm not so great at explaining things. Thanks a lot.
P.S. the id3 tags are already set to "none".

You already have ID3 tags set to none, but just for kicks, select the songs, pick a different ID3 tag, hit ok, then go back in and do it again, and pick none and see if that helps.
If not, then the next obvious place to check is to make sure the permissions on your iTunes folder/files are not set to restrict you from changing the files themselves (where ID3 tag info is stored).

  • IPAD3 does not automatically update after deleting a contact from Outlook 2010 over ICloud

I've noticed that when deleting a contact on my IPAD 3, it automatically deletes the contact on my PC (Outlook 2010 set up for ICloud).  However it doesn't work or update the other way around.
I can edit an existing contact on Outlook, or add a new contact on Outlook, and that always updates on the IPAD3.. But it doesn't update on the IPAD when deleting from Outlook which is strange.
If I delete all the contacts on the IPAD and then re-sync once again to ICloud, then it is as it should be and any previously deleted PC contacts, do not show on the IPAD.
Any thoughts as to what might be happening?

    Hi Kumar,
Please remove the codeline $List.Update();, then run your code again, it works for me.
You may need to firstly delete the synced contacts list within Outlook to remove those undeleted accounts, then re-connect the SharePoint contacts list to outlook, then run your modified Powershell code.
    Thanks
