Afraid to update to 10.4.3-should I or shouldn't I?

I don't remember the last time I read so many scary stories of a Mac OS X update going wrong as for this one. I generally upgrade as soon as updates are available, but this time I'm not so sure. How can I tell if I will have the same problems other people are having? Any advice?
Thanks.

Disconnekt, keep in mind that this discussion board is where people come to find answers for questions they are having trouble with. So the number of people "having problems" with the 10.4.3 update should be taken with a grain of salt. This is not to say that some people aren't having trouble, but only the people who are having trouble are posting here if you see what I mean.
For what it is worth I and many, many other Mac users have had no trouble with the most recent update.
If you make sure you follow some prudent steps before you upgrade you should avoid problems.
1. Backup, backup backup. Always have a current backup of your data before you install any major OS upgrade.
2. Don't use the Update System Prefs control panel. Download and install the combo updater for 10.4.3.
3. Don't have any other applications running when you apply the update.
4. Keep your PowerBook plugged into power and make sure she does not go to sleep while applying the update.
5. (Bonus Tip) Boot from your system restore disc and run both Repair Permissions and Verify your disc. If the Verify process finds any errors repair the disc before applying the latest update.

  • UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL POST-"Should I Or Shouldn't I Upgrade To Snow?"

    HI ALL,
I posted this update to my original post as a separate post so Others would see it-if they had the same concerns that I did about upgrading to Snow.
I took the plunge and upgraded to snow-I HAVE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!! Yea!
The installation went very smoothly-the update did as well.
My MacBook is still JUST AS FAST as it was prior-My Blue Tooth still works fine-My iLife 09 and other non-apple apps work fine-my printer works fine too-and no font problems!
I do have to say that I was very careful to make sure I did all of the typical installation preps first-
Did a couple of sudo-cleaning commands
    Repaired Permissions-before & after installation
Had nothing connected to my MacBook during installation or update
Also my HD was new and had a fresh copy of Leopard 5 (with all updates included)
on it-so there were only a couple of NON-Apple apps on it at the time of snow installation-don't know if that helped or not or I just lucked out.
I am just thrilled-and lovin it!
If anyone has the same concerns that I did-I would say -BACKUP & GO FOR IT!
You can always go back to Leopard 5 if it doesn't work for you.
    Thanks to all that posted

Thanks for the report. Bootable backup is always advised.

About to back up iTunes to XHD. Have old version 10.6.3.  Have been afraid to update with 40GB of music. Been digitizing vinyl.  In this version, playlists export as m3u, which needs to be converted to MP3-Song by song??? Goal is to also be able to burn MP3 to flash drive and to XHD as usable data.
Help?? What do I do first?  Could export as m3u-then figure it out later? Or will this data be unreadable junk in a new version of iTunes?
Does new version 11.whatever., have a provision to make all into MP3? Obviously past applecare contract.
Been looking at forums-not clear what to do.
Is there a simple way to convert/export m3u as MP3 in the newest version of iTunes?  Am I asking the right questions???

I'm trying to connect my Bluetooth JBL speakers to my Macbook Pro but it isn't working. I can't seem to find Bluetooth Setup Assistant because I updated my laptop. What should I do?

Make sure you set the speakers as discoverable, which usually involves holding down a button for a few seconds. Go to System Preferences / Bluetooth and you should be able to add it.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • My Apple TV froze up while updating the software. What should I do?

My Apple TV froze up while updating the software. What should I do?

You can't do much else besides pull the plug. If it causes further problems you should be able to restore as below:
Get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
On the other hand you may be able to simply start the update again. If however the update continues to fail, you should try the restore routine above.

  • Power PC G4 - slower to boot since 10.4.9 update (Afraid to update Macbook)

    Hi Everyone,
Just updated my Power PC at work, and now after three re-boots, and after fixing the permissions, my Mac takes longer to boot (almost 45 seconds longer).
I have a new Macbook at home, I am afraid to update it to 10.4.9. I am hearing way to many horror stories on what the update does (fan running all the time, slower boot-ups, eject key not working, running hotter than normal, etc.)
Will it hurt not to update my MacBook? It runs perfect now, and I just do not need the hassle of anything going wrong because of an update to the operating system.
    Thanks

It's starting to sound that way sadly
However, if you've invested in utilities like Disk Warrior, pop in that CD and allow to check your HDD. It might reveal directory structure corruption that's beyond fsck's (i.e. Disk Utility) ability to detect and resolve.
Also please check into my suggestion about verifiation of SMART hard drive diagnostics (in my previous post).
Another helpful utility if TechTool Pro. It can run advanced diagnostics on much of your hardware to ensure it's functioning normally, including a full sector verification of your hard drive(s). I've discovered bad disk blocks from this type of test in this past.
How much RAM do you have installed? If you have more than 1 stick of RAM, please try removing the one closest to the CPU, slide the others down the line, and keep an eye on things. If you have defective/marginal RAM, the OS might be corrupting itself in memory, leading to all kinds of potential problems. Memtest is a great tool to test RAM, but it recommends 5 passes which can take hours to complete: http://www.memtestosx.org/
If it comes down to simply being a corrupt OS X installation, one option you have is Archive and Install, which is a process Apple developed to allow users to make a best-effort at reinstalling the OS with minimal impact to already installed applications and user files: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Though doubtful, you might have an outdated version of Sonnet Cache installed (last release was April 2006, which includes support for OS X 10.4): http://www.sonnettech.com/support/downloads/osxupgradesw.html
Bear in mind I didn't look too deeply into Sonnet's information on this software and your processor. So I'm not sure if your processor even uses the Cache software or not. But if it does, you might want to try upgrading/reinstalling to the latest release. I'd be surprised if this fixed your problem, given how long you've probably been running 10.4.x
Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!

If running iOS 5.0 or higher, you don't need a computer to update your phone. You can do so directly on your phone: Settings>General>Software Update. If you're not running iOS 5.0 or higher, you must first update using iTunes on a computer.
