After 10.5.2 upgrade, machine hangs on boot at grey apple/spinning dial

Leopard has been installed and running for 5 months on an external 160G iomega USB drive on my intel macbook pro.
Last night, I took the 10.5.2 upgrade, it downloaded and installed everything, then asked to "Restart", and during reboot, it did some stuff, then I think requested to restart again, and now it won't boot.
On boot the gray apple comes up, the little dashed dial spinner goes round and round, the disk light blinks like its booting for about 10 seconds, then it just stops.
If I take off the USB drive, I can boot my old Tiger system off the internal just fine. Just the Leopard install has been bricked.
This happened once when I had Tiger on an external firewire LACIE drives; I took an update, and the system would no longer boot.
Seems like Apple needs to do a better job testing upgrades with systems installed on external drives.. this is pretty depressing to loose everything just doing an upgrade.
Does anyone know what this is?
Is there any magic key sequence I can use to debug what's going wrong on boot?
I tried Shift-Apple-V to try to get a verbose boot going, but apparently the hang is too early in the boot process.

You might use the terminal command:
dmesg
to see the boot process.
I have Leopard 10.5.2 with the latest security update running on three Macs, two MBPs and an old dual G5. No problems, so I cannot agree that has to do with an update. I believe it is due to 3rd pary apps, old drivers, etc.
I have never had a problem with any of the Apple software or updates. I conclude that the problems must be related to 3rd party apps, etc., and not to the actual Apple software, or else I would be experiencing the same problems, which I am not. And I don't believe in luck

  • After Upgrade to Snow Leopard booting Stops at Apple sign plus spinning cir

I changes the harddrive in my mac Book pro (Late 2008). Before i had a fujitsu 400 gb harddrive. It was Slow, but it worked. Now i changed it into a hitachi travelstar 500 gb 7k500. Installing Leopard no problem. It worked just Fine. Then i installed the Upgrade to Snow Leopard and after restart it went until the apple sign with the spinnig Circle under it ( Grey screen). and the Circle keeps spinnig for hours and Snow Leopard won't start. Can someone Tell me what the problem is and what i can do about it. I read Lots of posts in other communities andit Sems as if thers had nö Problem with this hard drive but None Said if he had Snow leopard installed. I am starting to freak, because i can't figure it out.
Before the spinnig Circle there's another Odd Thing. The Grey screen with the Apple sign Shows up with Progress bar under it. I don't Know. Never had a Problem like hat before. Hope you can help me.
I just changed the harddrive, all hemother components of my Computer are original.
    Tanks for your help

Thanks. Now I could back it up. It even booted. But now I have a new problem. The new hard drive is reallz faster than the old one. But Evers now and then the system just freezes. Not like when it was overworked before with the old system. No it completely freezes. You can just move the mouse then. But you can move windows, can't click on anything. This lasts about 30 seconds, then everything is normal. Is there a size maximum for a internal hard drive or cache max or a speed max. It makes go crazy.
But never the less. You first hit helped. Maybe you have another one.

  • After EFI 1.1 upgrade, Linux won't boot

I've been using Ubuntu Linux on my macbook from a year now (when I bought it). It's been working flawlessly until today.
I've updated to EFI 1.1 (it's a macbook C2D from december 2006) and after succesfull install, the installer confirmed it, Ubuntu won't boot.
I've tried everything, including PRAM and SMC clearing. I've reinstalled OS/X and the problem persists. Also the Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) and Gutsy (7.10 beta) Live-CDs stall at boot.
It is possible to boot the computer with Knoppix 5.1.1 (older kernel) but the keyboard is erratic and doesn't detect hard drive.
It was supposed that this update solved some problems with the keyboard under grub also. Mine is worse than ever, I can't type anything nor use the emergency shell in Linux. In Knoppix, keystrokes show repeated chars in the screen, making it unusable.
Help please, this computer is my worktool. Thank you.

I update to EFI 1.1 also. I was not able to boot into windows through bootcamp. It hangs on the gray screen. I try to use the option boot so it will show up the partition. Selecting Mac OS X boots fine, but when selecting windows, the mouse and screen freezed. So i tried PRAM clearing. same thing. Then I set the startup disk to Windows (in OS X preference) and I tried to press and hold power button until it finally boot into windows. Not sure what it did, but it's now works fine.

  • Hang on boot up -grey screen of death, no logo, nothing bootable

    Hi.
I have a stock iMac 24" 2.16ghz on which I've been running 10.4.8 happily for about 6 weeks. When I booted it today, I have a grey screen with no logo, no option to boot anything and no errors. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, no good. I have reseated the RAM, changed the chips over, tried one at a time, no good. When I boot with Option held down to get the boot menu, I get a cursor but no options. I've tried booting from optical drive, no good. I don't have a bootable external drive to test with, so now I'm stuck.
Any ideas? I'm stumped. Thanks in advance, amigos.
    Pete

I get a grey screen after the "gong" but eventually the logo appears and it boots up. Does a grey screen mean a kernal panic? I downloaded Windows XP this past weekend, and I'm wondering if this had an affect on my hard drive. Last night I heard my drive make this sound like a CD was skipping its music. At first I thought it was the Internet radio station I was listening to, but I heard it come from the back of the iMac. I powered the machine off, then turned it back on and it seems fine. I did a "fast" hardware test that indicated "no problems."

  • Mac Mini hangs on boot with grey Screen. No response to Keyboard

    Hello,
yesterday my Mac Mini (C2Duo, fifth generation unibody) startet to behave strangely. First thing was that it was not responding to the mouse(connected throught the keyboard)
I replaced the mouse and everything seemed to be ok.
I then did the latest update available on Mountain Lion and went home.
When I came back this morning, the Mac Mini hang with grey screen. I restarted. Again grey screen.
    Chime comes. Then nothing.
Tried everything from http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570 but nothing worked. The Mac Mini does not seem to be responding
to any keyboard command to enter safe mode, select boot device etc. No firmware password has been set.
Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated.
    Yours,
    Andreas

Have you reset the SMC, then held down the mouse button while restarting to get the CD out?
    Reset SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

I have been trying to isolate the problem a little further. I re-installed (with just the base and sudo) and after upgrading pacman rebooted and it worked without fail. Then I installed libusb and libusb-compat which where required when I tried to upgrade just the kernel using
    pacman -S kernel26
which initially failed because of the missing dependencies libusb and libusb-compat. I then re-booted and that worked without a problem.
I then upgraded to Kernel 2.6.39 using the above command and then it hung on rebooting. I saved the logs at each stage.
The additional logs in errors.log in the reboot that failed are as follows.

When you boot in single user or safe mode, all third party software is prevented from started. So it is possbile one of your third party party applications that are starting at boot is not compatable with the new RAM. I would try turning it all off and then test them all each in turn.

  • DVD Player problem after 10.4.7 upgrade

I don't know if I posted this to the right forum so I'll repost it here. Sorry for the repeat. Compared to others on this forum my problem seems trivial but it is still somewhat annoying. After installing 10.4.7 upgrade combo I can no longer use Apple's DVD player app. The app launches and recognizes DVDs but cannot make it through the title before it hangs. It responds to eject and quit. It informs me that skipping to the next chapter is not permitted and it does not crash. I have tried: dumping the prefs, fixing permissions, and re-running the updater. On the same machine if I reboot onto the other drive with 10.3.9 the DVD player (V 4.0 vs V 4.6.5) works as advertised. Any ideas?
    TIA
    Dave

I HATE FM! OK so I found the problem. I posted and got some ideas. I downloadsd Pacifist and re-installed DVD Player. (one version back 4.5 v 4.6.5) I removed all power from the machine for 10-15 minutes. The problem was still there. After giving up in disgust I left the computer alone for a day. This morning I figure I'll check out a DVD I just made using VLC. (afterall it still worked) So I stick the disk into the drive and DVD Player launches and I'm waiting for it to freeze and....@#% #@*& @#* *# % #*&^@! It works just fine! So I stick in the comercial DVD I had been testing with and its all better now. BUT I DON"T KNOW WHY!
    Sorry for the rant.
Thanks for all your kind help.

  • Cannot Login after 10.4.11 Upgrade

I recently upgraded my G4 Quicksilver Power Mac from 10.3.9 to Tiger. The install DVD was for 10.4.6. The DVD installed fine, then I ran the system updater to get the remaining 10.4 updates. It updated Java no problem, then the Mac OS X Update Combined (PowerPC) came back with an error saying the digital signature is incorrect. I then went to the Apple Support Downloads site, and attempted to download an update with Safari. I tried the combos for 10.4.8 thru 10.4.11, and all of them failed verification after attempting to open the download. Very strange. So I went to my macbook, downloaded the 10.4.11 combo update ok, and put it on the G4 with a thumb drive. It opened the dmg file fine, I ran the update, and the system re-booted. At some point before the login screen, it hung up and I had to power it down. After restarting, it now gets to the login screen, and sits there until I move the mouse pointer into the login window. It then hangs there with the spinning beachball. I'm not able to login at all. Same problem when booting in Safe Mode. I've used the DVD to startup the system, and can access the HD using a terminal window. I ran the disk utility, and the HD is fine. I looked at the system.log and don't see anything there that I can identify as something I can fix. There is a segmentation fault at time 22:57:47. I'm including the log below, maybe someone can get something from it. I thought I'd try to re-install the 10.4.11 combo update, and haven't been able to mount the dmg file while running off the DVD. To do that I need to create a root directory on the HD, but it's read-only when running from the DVD. While in the hung login state, I cannot remotely login to the G4 using ssh from my macbook.
So at this point I'm stuck short of trying to re-install from the DVD using the option to archive the current OS before install (the installer recognizes that it is now at 10.4.11, and so it won't do a normal simple install again.) I'd really like to try to fix what is there or figure out how to re-run the 10.4.11 update, before doing the archive/install/10.4.11 update again. Don't want to do all that and end up in the same place.
I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas. Below are the system profile and the system.log. Sorry for the long post. Thanks!!

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode (hold shift key down while starting, be very patient).

    [Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 - Computer shuts down during Safe Boot|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24054]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.

  • Unable to start after Windows 7 Pro upgrade, am I crazy?

I'm now on my fourth try and I'm about to lose my patience.
I purchased a T400 6475-B14 with Vista, 32 bit.  I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Professional upgrade.  I am installing the 64 bit disc.  Currently the machine has 2GB of ram, but I ordered 4GB (2X2GB) of RAM from Lenovo and it should be here in a few days.  Additionally, since the machine is still under warranty Lenovo is sending me the restore discs (I think that's what they are called) and they should be here in a few days as well.
On my three previous attempts I upgrade the OS and everything seems to be fine.  However when I go to the Lenovo site it can't detect my system.  That seems a bit odd, but I can deal with it.  I put in all of the machine info and download the Toolbox.  Once I did that tells me to download the System Updater, but for some reason it forwards me to the link for Vista/XP.  I then manually find the System Updater, Win 7 64 bit, download and install it and it finds and installs the PowerManager, Connections, Recovery and Repair, etc.
I don't seem to have any problems until I shut down the machine.  When I go to restart, the machine hangs at the 4 color Microsoft logo.  After a few minutes (5-10) it gives me the option to try and restore to a previous point and fix the machine.  However each time it tells me that the system is unable to repair itself.  I then reboot and hit the F11 button at the THINKPAD screen and restore to a previous version.
Last night, after the two previous restorations failed to give me a stable machine I completely reinstalled the OS.  Everything seemed to be working fine again.  However this time I rebooted after each update, to see where the problem might be.
I had downloaded all of the System updater info except for the R & R and C++.  I installed C++, but it didn't require a restart.  I think installed the R & R, installed it and then machine rebooted.
Then the same thing happened again!!!!!!!!
I went into the diagnostics and it came the the following:
    Root Cause Found:
A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting.
    Repair Action: System Restore
Result: Failed.  Error code = 0x1f
Repair action: System filed integrity check and repair
Result: Failed.  Error code = 0x490
    Time taken = 945178ms
I'm going to re-install Windows 7 again, but this is starting to really drive me crazy (granted it's a short road, but still!).
Can anyone help me understand what I'm doing wrong?  I'm not trying to do anything crazy and I'm following the instructions to the letter but I still can't seem to get my system to work!!!!!!
Any/all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    GBA

    Hi,
You are doing (trying to do) exactly what I did when I punted Vista (good riddance!) and updated to Win 7 Pro 64 on my T400.  I don't see anything obvious that you are doing wrong.  Here's what I did:
Installed Win 7 upgrade as a clean install. Then ran Windows update.  Then installed ThinkVantage System Update for Win 7, and let it do its thing,  No problems.
Is that the updater you installed?

  • Extremely Sluggish mac, especially after 10.9.2 upgrade Any reasons?

    Hi!
A few months ago I got a mid 2012 Mbp with the following config:
    2.5Ghz i5/ 500gb /4gb (2x2) @1600Mhz
It was always a slow performer. Finder would hang and take ages for the "right click" menu to open, open programs would be sluggish and even after just three or four tabs running on chrome and no other app open, it would take forever to scroll, as the program would simply hang. I was waiting for the update and when 10.9.2 came, it made the problem even worse. On a fresh startup with no additional apps running, about 3 gb of my 4 gb ram are simply gone. Even if I load a bunch of  simple apps like Messages or Notes, it quickly escalates to 3.99Gb and the machine hangs constantly.
Does the OS itself really take up 3GB? If so... (and it seems that way) Dafuq was Apple thinking? I am really regretting spending so much to get a mac only to find out 75% of the memory is being consumed by the God damned OS itself.
I digress.Anyhow, a friend suggested that this model of mac benefits from getting an SSD. Should I get an SSD, or upgrade RAM or both, to get some immediate relief? Or is there a way to get back some of my RAM and better performance?

I would take a look at your Etrecheck report first and see if there are some things there that can be remedied before you go investing in more RAM and/or a SSD.
