Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
This may not give you any more information, but you might try booting into "verbose" mode

to see if you can see any useful error messages.

I'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

  • HELP... after 10.4.11 update I can't boot past the blue screen

HELP... after 10.4.11 update I can't boot past the blue screen, and it is pretty frustrating, to say the least. Here's what happened last night:
I installed elgato's eyetv 250, and at the end it asked to update the software. I did so, and when I tried to run it again it said I had to be running 10.4.11. I quickly went over and downloaded the 10.4.11 combo updater to my desktop and proceeded to repair permissions on my disk so I could run the updater.
I repaired permissions and started the updater. It got halfway through updating and said something like it could not finish and stopped. No reason why - it just stopped. I tried it again, and it did the same thing after going about 25 to 30 percent through the updating process. I thought that was very odd, so I checked, and I was running 10.4.9.
I thought I needed to get the 10.4.10 update, so I downloaded the combo updater several times. It would not run, giving me some error message that it would not even open, so I thought I needed to restart my computer to get it to run. I did so.
That's when my computer would not boot. It gets through the initial white screen with the logo in the middle and the revolving circle, and while it stays there for a long time the fans run increasingly faster. They tame down, and then the blue screen with "Mac OS" on it and the blue progress bar comes up. There is no blue progress bar, though... that's where it stops and will not go any further.
Can ANYBODY help me get this thing booted back up? It was so late last night that before I started I didn't back the Mac up, and of course I have a project on there that I need to finish Saturday afternoon for a company.
ANY HELP WILL BE SO GLADLY APPRECIATED. If you can give me step by step instructions on what to do, you will surely be blessed! Thanks for any help,
    Barry

Hi mrstang, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It sounds like Disk Directory problems.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • Imac stuck on boot up screen

    Hi all
Right now my computer is stuck on boot up with the gray screen. First I tried the soft boot but nothing happened then I tried to start up From my Snow Leopard Cd and it popped it out of the computer. I do not know what to do next.
    Thank you.
    Sandy

    HI BGreg
I booted up my 10.6 Cd holding down the C Key. It went a second or two and then the CD popped out.
Something else I noticed that I did not mention before was a soft clicking sound that I thought was coming from my back up drive. So I shut the back up drive off and then tried starting up from the Imac again, without the disk. This time I got the question mark on the screen and that the soft clicking sound is coming from my computer.
I would like to try turning the back up drive back on and try your alt/option scenario with my Os cd in my Imac and see what happens.
    What do you think?
    Sandy
Ps.I just printed out the apple note info you highlighted and am going to read and try out soltutions!

  • After software update, iMac has trouble booting

I have a 17" white intel iMac (bought november '06).
I recently had to archive and install (long story)
Everything works except after every software update that requires a restart, my mac doesn't restart right. I hear the startup noise a few times, getting softer every time until it is not audible. The iMac stays on the gray screen until I hold the power button down and manually restarted it.
I tried resetting PRAM a few times, but it didn't help.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks!

Are you sure you really had a problem? After a system update, it's normal for the imac to stay on the gray screen for a couple of minutes, then even reboot sometimes. If you've interrupted the process, you probably do have trouble now. I'd download the combo update from the downloads section of this site, run that, and give it time to restart itself.
If you mean it was stuck for like half an hour or something, that's not normal.

  • After iOS 8.3 update, apps stuck on OPEN on App Store Updates page

Did the iOS 8.3 update by backing up my iPad Mini in iTunes then doing a "Restore". I did that with the last update and all went fine. This time, it appears to have gone well except that I had some apps that had updates pending after the Restore. After doing the updates, when I go to the App Store "Updates" page, I still have 4 of my apps listed there with the button option set to OPEN. On the upper right corner it says "Updated August 18, 2015". Yesterday when I did the update was Saturday April 25, 2015 - go figure. When I tap them they all open but they never leave the page. One post said to wait until an app had a valid update pending and see what happens after I update it, so I'll need to wait to see if that works. I have searched this community and tried all suggestions: changed the date set to manual and push it out over 30 days. That did not work. Did a reset. No luck. I even did another "Restore" thinking maybe that would resolve it, but they came right back. The puzzling thing is that in all of my searching, I have found apps stuck in differing states of "waiting" or "downloading", but none of them have mentioned seeing the apps with the OPEN option visible. I did delete the apps and that made them go away, but I'd prefer to keep them. Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance...slog

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • After software update, iMac hangs on boot and restarts over and over again

I verified and fixed the permissions and disk with no issues.
By default, my iMac enters into an old Windows Bootcamp partition I no longer have so whenever I restart my computer I have to hold down option to boot into the Mac OS.
All this trouble for a lousy Quicktime update.
    Any help much appreciated.
    - Jeff

Have you done a SMC and PRAM reset? Give those a try, they're simple to do and could fix your problem. Here is how:
    1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
    2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
    3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having.

  • 4th gen ipod touch wont work after 6.0 update? stuck on boot screen

last night i downloaded the new os for apple. i plug it in to the comp and its in recovery mode? anyway then i install the update and restore, (that was the only option i could do) but now my ipod after restarting wont go past the boot menu, also my computer no longer recognizes my ipod any help anywhere?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • After 8.1.3 update, ipad stuck or terms and conditons

I updated my ipad 2 with itunes to 8.1.3. When the ipad starts up, it will not let me past the terms and conditions screen. I have tried soft reset, hard reset, backup, restore, recovery mode. Everything I do takes me back to the same place, unable to agree or disagree terms.

Thanks Apple, for breaking my ipad, I suppose I will just have to wait for a 8.1.3 Jailbreak update, have never done it before, but it looks like that's the only possible way to get my ipad working again.

  • Canon printer driver update - iMac no longer boots up

This morning my Mac displayed an update for my Canon MP560 printer. After the download and install my Mac no longer boots, it just hangs on the white apple logo. I have left it for ages and it rebooted itself but hangs again.

Booted from DVD and did repair permissions. Seems to have sorted it out now.

  • After 10.5.3 update i can't boot up to my desktop

    I updated my macbook with 10.5.3 and everything is fine; But, I updated my wife's MacBook and it won't boot up past a light blue screen; it is stuck;
    the only difference was she had other updates, as well as Leopard update;
What can i do to get hers to boot up to desktop?

It seems like a cache corruption.
    A) If you have another user on the wife's macbook try the following steps.
    1) Restart into Safe mode and login as alternative user
    2) Download Leopard Cache Cleaner or TinkerTool System or Maintenance or Cocktail
    3) Clean the caches, by example with Leopard Cache Cleaner check "Deep Cleaning" and Local, System and All User Caches
    4) Reboot
    B) If you haven't any other user on wife's macbook (is not a good idea to have only one user on os x)
    1) Boot wife's macbook in target mode, and connect it to your macbook
    2) and from your administrative user follow the step A 2 and A 3
    3) Eject wife's macbook and reboot
    C) If you prefer terminal Follow B 1 steps then
    1)
    /usr/bin/sudo /bin/sh -c "/bin/rm -f /Volumes/Wife's HD name/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.";

  • After 10.7.2 update OS does not boot...

After installing 10.7.2 update the OS does not boot. I tried to recover from recovery hd disk but after 3 attempts I am still not able to download lion! Any thoughts????

Try the Lion Community, and bookmark the notebook community (this is not).
You will probably need to provide others with more information too.
Cloned backup? TimeMachine? using Disk Utilityh to repair Lion from the recovery partition (comnand r on startup)

  • After 10.6.2 update system halts during boot

After having installed the 10.6.2 update via software update my Mac halts during boot. It boots right up to the grey screening displaying the Apple logo and the grey status wheel but doesn't go on from there. It just keeps displaying that screen forever with the status wheel still moving but not hard disk activity anymore after a few minutes.
I've already tried (via booting from the Snow Leopard DVD), to no avail:
    - repairing permissions
    - repairing the drive
    - resetting the SMC

You could try [these grey sceen, etc., troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570] ignoring any duplicaion of what you already have don. And, you could try [these general troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1394] again ignoring duplication.
If all above fails, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

  • IMac Stuck at Boot Logo w/ White Bar through Logo URGENT!!!

Hello, I have an iMac Model: A1225. At first, my problem was that on start-up, the iMac would not get past the boot/logo screen, and then all of a sudden it would go to a gray screen with three thick, white, jagged bars running through the screen. I tried to boot from a recovery USB and DVD, but it was no luck. It would not boot from anything. I ran a disk check on the hard drive from single-user mode, and it said that the hard-drive was okay, but I decided to change the hard drive and the memory anyway. I put a brand-new, fully-funtional, formatted hard drive with Snow Leopard that booted fine on another computer and brand-new memory. Now, when the computer gets to the boot/logo screen it gets stuck here with a thinck wite bar running through the apple logo. Please Help! I will also post a picture. Thanks Guys!

I restore from a Time Machine backup.  It seems to have done the trick.  This is only temporary.  I do plan on restoring the machine completely and then migrating only the files I absolutely need.
