After 10.6.7 (special MBP) update, MBP (early 2011) running much hotter

After installing the 10.6.7 MacBook Pro special updater, I note that my MBP is now running much hotter -- on the order of 20 to 30 degrees F (was running usually around 100 to 110 under load, now running 130 to 140 with just Safari open).
In Activity Monitor, nothing is using a lot of CPU % but I have one kernel task mopping up 78 threads and 515.9 MB of memory (consistent over at least the last 20 minutes as I check back on it). Parent process is noted simply as "kernel task (0)".
I've done a few restarts and some usual housekeeping -- any clues as to what's up and how I can see exactly what this process is?

I have a late 2009 MBP and I have noticed that just surfing the internet has caused the machine to run 20-30 degrees hotter. It used to hover around 40C (according to iStat...obviously it would climb under a load) when I was bumming around the net (no videos) and now it is anywhere between 60-70C doing the same stuff. I didn't really notice it till the other day when all I was doing was working on some bash scripts so at that point it was under very little load and it just seemed quite warm.

  • After EFI Firmware update 2.3, MBP Early 2011 will not boot. During restart it all went wrong please help!

    Hello,
I've done an ample amount of Internet research to find an answer to this problem however nothing yet found is quite like this. I will start from the beginning.
I am traveling through Europe, and I normally live in California. When I arrived in Ireland my MBP early 2011 15 inch, began crashing constantly when I had several tabs open on Chrome and maybe one or two low CPU/Memory using applications, nothing the 8gb RAM &750gb hard drive can't normally handle. Thus I began trouble shooting.  I ran disk utility once started up and repaired both disk and permissions. Still crashing. It didn't seem like it had anything to do with a kernel panic shut down, I never would receive the usual message indicating so. After that I did an SMC reset. It was still crashing. I then upgraded the OSX from 10.8 to 10.8.4 believing it could help. It did momentarily, but then crash again. (When it crashes screen goes black suddenly and upon pressing power button does a regular boot on my single partition). I decided attempting to repair using the Internet recovery option but it appeared my MBP had not yet have it installed, so I downloaded from Apple and began installing. Here I made a mistake, I unplugged the power source as it was restarting. When the gray screen and apple appeared, the loading bar shows up as it says it will when installing the update, but when the bar fully loads it crashes every time. I've tried starting in safe mode, which then loads but never goes further (I let it stand for two hours such as that and nothing). Then I decided to allow the MBP to fully charge overnight to give it time and charge. This morning the problem has stayed the same, even with power source plugged in. Please help I need this to work.
Thank you and please ask any questions!

Your constant crashing problem is probably some type of hardware fault which no update can fix. Doing the 10.8.4 update and then the firmware update just caused further problems. you need to take thr system to a apple store to be diagnosed and fixed if cost effective.

  • Im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5

im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5.
after making the photo slide show, i clicked share>export movie.  after which i burned using toast. the file became a .mov.  i tried playing it in my mac and it worked. my fear now is will it also play in a regular dvd?... i read from google that mov files won't run in dvd players.  what format should i convert it to so it'll play in a dvd player.  can you suggest a faster way i can burn my projects for it takes me almost an hour to export.  im going to make 28 slideshows for my kids in school. *=( if i need to do this process 28 times, i may not be able to finish it on time.  please suggest a software or an alternative as to how i should do this... m more comfortable using imovie than iphoto.  thanks and i hope to hear from someone soon *=j

Thank you QuickTimeKirk...used toast to burn project... my project was in .mov, i tried to play it a dvd player, it did play... will try again tomorrow using another dvd player just to be sure it'll will really work with dvd players.  thank you again for your reply *=)

  • SD card reader is not working in my MBP early 2011. Is there any solution?

SD card reader is not working in my MBP early 2011. Is there any solution?

on my macbook iphoto didn't recognise my camera or card reader after upgrading to iphoto '11,
Evenutally I went to an application called Image Capture which I seem to have already.  This read the camera contents.  I selected the images I wanted and then imported them into iphoto which was one of the options given.  It worked.  God knows why one has to go through two steps.  But I'm feeling pretty triumphant. This may help you if you haven't already sorted it.

  • 1080p render for mbp early 2011?

im going to get into the youtube video makeing business with an intensity extreme capture card which connect to my macbook pro through thunderbolt
i remember once i used to render a few videos i think it was imovie does anyone know the early mbp early 2011 is capable to render a 1080p video because i remember i once rendered a few videos in imovie and it owuldnt let me pick 1080p is it because mbp early 2011 cant handle it or something?

Well, I ran the progran anyway, TechTool that is and looked for updates within the program and it said I was running the latest version 3.1.3. I ran the program and it crashed. I was the crash test dummy.

  • How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?

Had since May/June last year i5 13" and only since I applied all updates few weeks ago it seems to be louder than it was before?
It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?
    None.
The machine should only make noise if the Superdrive is being used or the CPU's heavily used, going by my Early 2011 17".

It's possible it wasn't installed correctly and/or the case is slightly off so it's resonating the hard drive vibrations.
Make sure you have a internet connection (don't move) and reboot the machine holding the d key down like forever and Hardware Test will run.
Backup your data off the machine, if the hard drive dies under 1 year or three years with Applecare, then go get a new one. else you can replace it yourself with a better one and not void your warranty if you don't break anything doing so. Add more RAM while your at it.

As you know Mac's are made by hand by young Chinese women working 12 hour shifts performing the same function every 7 seconds for only $1.20 a hour. They live 7 to a box room and have to pay 70¢ a meal.
All in all I would say they are very tired, and it's possilbe a few defects made it to your machine.

  • I have a mbp early 2011 and mountain lion will not download

    hi there,
i'm trying to update osx 10.7.4 and it just hangs on "waiting" for hours and does nothing, i went into the purchases section in app store and it says "An error has occured" in red letter, i click teh download button again and it does abosultley nothing.... and ideas would be  greatly appreciated ps i have a 15" mbp early 2011 if that helps

Your issue downloading Mountain Lion appears to have been answered HERE. I'm betting you are both running Antivirus.

  • Received new battery - Now MBP runs much hotter

My old battery had no poblems - MBP had no problem, now with new battery it is running much hotter and fans come on big time. Had no noise at all with first battery. Guess I'll call Apple and find out what's going on.

I'm trying out the new battery (normal use of MBP is with line current and external kvm). On battery power the CPU temp stays in the fifties -- much hotter when plugged in for some reason. Also, on battery, there is a new, faint but noticeable noise, not steady but about one-second bursts with a microsecond inbetween, so 50-60 Hz. I'm thinking of visiting a genius.
BREAKING NEWS: As the fuel gauge went down below 1:10 hr remaining, the menu bar icon shifted to "Calculating", with a red bar at the left end. System profiler shows all zeros in the Power submenu. Something is definitely amiss.

  • Can't re-install windows 7 64-bit on MBP early 2011 after Mavericks

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13 inch which I used to have Mac OS X 10.8 and Windows 7 64-bit prior to installing Mavericks. After the update, my windows partition, which i resized to a larger space using Disk Utility and then a third party software on the windows side; was gone. It was shown in the disk utility as an unmountable partition.
After several failed attempts to get my files back, I decided to start from scratch. But when I went on Bootcamp 5, the "Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk" option was gone. After about searching for a way to re-enable that option by adding lines on Boot Camp Assistant's info.plist file, and signing it from terminal, the option was there again. It let me create a windows install disk from an ISO, and partition my harddrive. But when I reboot my computer and pressing alt, the usb stick doesnt appear as a bootable drive. So I Installed rEFIt. I could locate my usb drive from it but when I click on the corresponding button (it was something like boot windows from WININSTALL), it says bootmgr is missing.
The next day I got blank DVD-R's so I could burn the ISO on a disc. It successfully booted from the CD. To intall it on the bootcamp partition, I had to format it to NTFS using the windows 7 installation software. But when it comes to intallation, while expanding the installation files, I get an error from the Windows side saying that the files could not be expanded.
I tried to run the USB stick on a mid 2012 macbook pro which worked. I have no idea what has happened with my macbook HDD since the Mavericks update. Does it have something to do with the partition table? I am usually a non-participant user of the support communities and this is my first post. I hope to come up with a solution as soon as possible.
    -Orkun

Hey there, it sounds like the trouble you are having is related to what is called 'non-standard boot camp partitioning' (resizing of the partition and all that). Do you notice that when launching Boot Camp Assistant you have the option to remove the current boot camp partition? If so I would say remove the partition and reinstall Windows using BCA (any other way of installing Windows on a Mac may cause you grief in the future).
Also I believe installing from an ISO is unsupported on some models - ultimately the difficulty you are having is related to partitioning. If Boot Camp *will not install* with the current partitioning the best thing to do would be to create a full Time Machine backup, repartition the disk from original install media (from 'current' to '1', reinstall the original OS and perform Mavericks upgrade via the Mac App Store, migrate from Time Machine backup and reattempt running Boot Camp Assistant (which will work this time). Maybe someone else has a quicker/hackier method but you can always expect difficulty with OS upgrade installs and Boot Camp while the partitioning is in the current state.

  • No on-board audio on 15" MBP - early 2011

    Hi,
Hardware: Macbook Pro early 2011, Core i7, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD
    Software: OSX Lion 10.7.2
Since yesterday my MBP speakers are not showing any audio available. Whenever I click the audio buttons on the keyboard, it shows the audio increase/decrease with a cross on the audio button showing that no onboard-audio is available for the system. I have searched Apple Communities for the possible causes and tried everything, save re-installing the OS / updates, e.g. killing coreaudiod application, reboot, repair permissions, starting in safe mode, deleting BezelServices preference files, connecting / dis-connecting a headphone etc.
One last thing, when I connect the headphone, the output audio starts working. But as soon as it is disconnected, the on-board audio goes away.
Could anyone please suggest the possible cause? I also use VMWare Fusion, MS Office for Mac 2011, Skype, Trillian etc, so not sure if one of them could be the cause of this.
    Thanks for the help,
    Mayank

    Hi,
I again see this issue happening on my machine. It started suddenly after my MBP had a kernel panic (the machine froze and I had to push the power button for a few seconds to switch the machine off and then restart). Since then the sound is not there and the icon in the menu bar is shown "grayed out".
Per my earlier try, I re-installed the MacOSX10.7.2 Combo update but it did not work. I also tried to reset the PRAM and NVRAM (per suggestion from TheSmokeMonster) and it did nothing apart from taking me to Mac OSX Utilities page from where I just restarted.
However, I found out that occassionally the sound comes back (for a few seconds) when running youtube videos. However the problem is still existing.
Any suggestions on fixing this will be appreciated.
EDIT: attaching the current audio midi setup screenshot

  • Garbled display at startup when connecting to External Monitor - MBP Early 2011.

    Hi,
When i connect my Early 2011 MBP to an external display i get a garbled display at startup.
I then have to disconnect the hdmi cable to the external monitor, after which the display clears up (on the laptop) and then when i reconnect the external monitor, it works fine. The problem with this process is that i have to do it each time i start/boot my laptop with the external display connected. The display mode is currently set to mirror displays if that helps.
Would appreciate any advice users with this kind of set up can provide. Thank you in advance.

    Welcome!!
It could be that you are using the external in "mirrored mode" with the res set above the max res for the MBP screen. On my Late 2007 MBP, the F7 key toggles between mirrored mode and "spanning" (or "extended desktop") mode and System preferences will let you set the two displays independently. I use an external monitor in spanning mode and have not experienced a problem as I have the internal display prefs set to a comfortable res for its hardware.

  • Apple care protection for MBP early 2011

Apple care came with TechTool Deluxe but my early 2011 MBP came with Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, Tech Tool states that it has not been fully tested with Lion. Short of buying a new copy, is there a way to get Tech Tool for Lion?
    Thanks
    JAW

Well, I ran the progran anyway, TechTool that is and looked for updates within the program and it said I was running the latest version 3.1.3. I ran the program and it crashed. I was the crash test dummy.
