After 10.6.8 freeze on login

I all
After last 10.6.8 update my MBP 13 2011 does go after login page...
Finder does not appear, i tried boot in safe mode and it go , i downloaded the update again (from site) and installed, but is the same.
Can anyone help me?

Might be a login item that's causing the freeze.
i tried boot in safe mode and it go
Not sure what that means ?
If you can, try booting in Safe Mode again. Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode. Then check for Login Items.
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
When you are done, click Restart from the Apple menu (top left in your screen).

  • Another (yet different) finder freeze and login

So my usually bulletproof TiBook just started freezing at login. Specifically, 10.4.9 launches perfectly up to the login screen. I type in my password (I only have 1 user+root) and the login screen fades to blue. And stays with the Apple blue background. The hard drive doesn't spin-the computer just sits there.
    Some useful info:
This started when I tried uninstall some user added preference panes that I didn't need/want anymore. One was the StuffIt AVR pane. The others were Silk, ShapeShifter, and Application Enahncer.
After logging in as a root user and deactivating AE, I was able to get a little further in logging in–my usual background would launch and I would get the Spotlight icon in the upper right, but that's it. If I move the cursor over the Spotlight icon, I get the spinning beach ball.
The last work I did before it started not logging in was to remove the StuffIt pane. I didn't think I had the uninstaller so I personall trashed the pane. Then I found the uninstaller and ran it, removing AVR and MagicMenu (which I think is the real culprit).
I've tried reinstalling StuffIt from the root account, resetting holding down power until the beep and restarting holding down apple-option-o-f. Needless to say, I never had a problem with all these preference panes until I went to uninstall them....
    Thanks for the tips!

    Hello theredf:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
You might try running repair disk from your software install DVD.
If that does not help, I would consider an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
A&I will install a fresh copy of OS X while preserving your files, programs, and settings. As always, it is good practice to back up before any software changes. You would, of course, need to update to current software levels (OS X 10.4.10 is current).

  • MBP freezes at login - Please help!

    hey all!
    please,please, please help me...
...just now it started that my mbp crashes (or freezes) at the login.
yes, i have installed all updates and firmware etc. but days or weeks ago and till now it worked without any problems.
i get to the login screen and see the cursor blink once and then it is gone and i can't sign in.
i did a restart in safemode and repaired the rights and checked the volume (which is ok) but still it freezes.
adobe version cue is not installed (or any other startup item).
i'm quite new to the mac so could anybody please help me out here?
    thank you!

Oddly, mine is doind the same. It was working fine on Monday. I left it overnight to let the UNIX processes run overnight.
Had a day off yesterday. Came in this morning to find the machine locked solid and roasting hot!!
I have used the install disc and repaired permissions and repaired the disc. No use.
I have reinstalled the OS from the supplied discs and run the updates and still it freezes at login. I get as far as selecting my user and typing the password and then it freezes.
I'm now going through the safe boot option. After that I'm going to have to rebuild my account since it is the only thing left.
I don't understand how the machine can chew itself up so much overnight that it hangs.
I have to be honest and say that I'm less impressed with the MBP. My old 700MHz G3 iBook works better than this.
The powersupply (I think) whines at me.
The wireless connection is a best, flakey
The OS seems to want to crumble under it's own weight.
Oh...and now the it has rebooted it can't get past the 'Starting Mac OS X....' screen.
If anyone has any bright ideas I would appreciate them. I'm now going to boot in single user mode and do apples recommended pokes to see what happens.

  • TS4348 After update to 10.8 cant login

Hi anyone help after update max os i cant login, neither as guest.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    for k in {,/S*}/L*/E*/{,.?}*.kext; do test -f "$k/Contents/Info.plist" && /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print :CFBundleIdentifier" "$_" | egrep -qv "apple|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|CalDigit|HighPoint|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID|stex" && echo $k; done | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; }  2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    Repeat with this line:
    { ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la*; echo; crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 4
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, Steps 1-4 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • 10.4 machines freeze at login

This morning all machines with 10.4.X on them in the high school freeze at login to the network, you can login locally fine. Any Leopard machines can login as usual. Anyone have any idea why the 10.4 machines which worked fine yesterday are having a problem today?
When I looked in server log I found this multiple times... but I have no idea how to fix.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Freezing on login after reboot

Everything was working great for a few days. Now when I try to login, after I enter my password a progress bar is appearing. It is filling to about 1/4 of the way before it freezes. I've seen another thread describing a similar situation but could not find it again to post there.
    Additional information:
-2014 Retina MacBook Pro purchased in August
    -FileVault is enabled
-i noticed that wireless had stopped working so I restarted. That's when this issue started for me.
-I use a Thunderbolt Display at work
-The last time machine backup was from just before I updated to Yosemite. I have data saved after the time that I really do not want to lose.

    Resolved for now.
I arrived at work and connected to my thunderbolt display and it quickly booted with no problems at all.
I suspect the issue is related to network connectivity and FileVault somehow.

  • [solved] Arch freezes before login

    Hello there,
today I restarted my computer after about 4 days uptime to clean the dust and reconnect my DVD derive. For this I removed my radeon graphics card and a usb device I didn't need.
After cleaning and reconnecting everything I tried to start my computer. My BIOS didn't let me and told me that my hard disk drive was failing and I should back it up and insert a 'proper' boot medium. I didn't really believe it because not so a long time ago I checked this device and it was completly fine. I disconnected the DVD drive and indeed my BIOS let me pass without any trouble.
But now Arch boots to the login shell and just freezes. I only get enough time to enter the first few letters of my username. Before the boot screen clears for the login screen I always get a glance on a error about my graphics card (a radeon hd 6850, I use the radeon driver) and another device and that they are initialized in a generic mode or something. Couldn't find anything in the logs about that.
Here are they and I hope someone is able to help:

Hm, dis- and reconnecting the graphics card solved the problem. Did this because I figured a hardware problem after freezes in three different live systems.

  • After upgrading to Tiger, freeze after waking from sleep on PM G4

My experience with Tiger in the past week as not been great. The reason I upgraded was to get iSync 2.1, so that my Moto E815 phone could be sync'd with my OSX AddresBook and iCal. This wasn't possible with the latest version of Panther.
So, I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.3, and now my G4 freezes immediately after waking from sleep. After pressing the 'return' key to wake the computer, the G4 sends a signal to wake the monitor, but on top of the screen saver is a black text box which states there was a problem I must press (and hold) the power button to restart the Mac. It's written in four languages.
When I installed Tiger, I used the 'archive' option.
My computer is a bit of a FrankenMac: Originally a G4/350 with AGP, upgraded with a Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor card, 1.12GB RAM, a 160GB HDD, an nVidia GeForce3 64MB AGP video card, Samsung DVD/CR-RW drive (Patchburn3) and a Belkin PCI card with 2 additional Firewire ports and 3 additional USB 2.0 ports. When I performed the upgrade, I had the keyboard and mouse plugged into the case USB 1.1 ports, a Logitech Notebook Pro USB camera plugged into the other case USB 1.1 port, and a D-Link BT120 USB->BT adapter plugged into one of the three USB 2.0 ports on the Belkin PCI card.
When I check the Console logs after the rebooting, I see a kernal panic in the panic.log. Apple has received this a number of times from me in the past week as I keep sending them 'talkback' logs after the fact.
I also see an error in the system.log which may reveal what is going on:

I suspect the problem where the USB devices are started, because I had that Bluetooth adapter plugged in at the time of the upgrade. I'm speaking of the lines in the log which start with 'USBF'. The keyboard and mouse are useless when the black screen shows up after waking from sleep.
I've tried some of the suggestions I've found for the iBook 'wake from sleep' postings on macfixit.com and here - resetting NVRAM and removing a few of the .plist files. This didn't seem to help.
I would greatly appreciate help in resolving this issue. I've been a Mac owner since the original Macintosh (it's still in my house) and am frustrated that this is the first problem I've encountered.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks. In fact I had bought a new keyboard and mouse (Macally) and sure enough, if I unplug it before it reboots, the CD drive door stays closed and I can boot from a CD! I did not try any of the other stuff. Is there any way to get it to stop this? Why does a USB peripheral cause the CD to eject anyway? Would love to know!

  • Screen Sharing via iCloud on Lion Freezes at Login Screen

After updating to OSX Lion 10.7.3, screen sharing between two computers via the Internet allows me to connect to the remote computer and see the remote user's login screen, but as soon as I click on a user to login, the screen share image freezes before I can enter the user password.
Using iCloud Back to My Mac because all machines have the same Apple ID & password. Exact same setup worked before the 10.7.3 upgrade, but it could be coincidence.
    Details:
Can see the remote computers in my finder,
Can click on them and connect successfully using either the Apple ID or the name and password a user that is allowed under Sharing -> Screen Sharing,
When clicking on "Screen Share," the computers connect and I'm prompted to either "Ask to Share the Display" or "Connect to Virtual Display"Since there really isn't anyone using the computer, I select "Connect to Virtual Display"
After clicking "Connect to Virtual Display" the Screen Sharing window shows the remote computer's login screen, whcih shows the user names, their icons and "Sleep" "Restart" or "Shut Down" on the bottom of the screen.  One user has an orange circle with a white checkmark next to it.
Previously, I could click a user's name or icon, enter the password and control the remote Mac.  Now, not amount of clicking works.
Have tried disconnecting and reconnecting as different users or using Apple ID without changes in the perofmance. Have restarted both machines.
    Any help?

I'm having the same problem screen sharing to a Lion 10.7.3 machine, I get this message.
However, it works just like it used to when I screen share from a 10.7.3 machine to another Mac running 10.6.8.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Freezing at "Login Window starting"

Hello, my PB won't get past login screen. It freezes specifically when it says "Login Windows starting".
Apple Hardware Test comes out fine but I can't repair using Disk Utility (the disk or permissions). Haven't tried Disk Warrior yet. I've tried starting in Safe Mode to no avail. I tried resetting PRAM and PMU with the same result.
Is there any other possible solution to my startup woes before I concede defeat and take this bad boy in to an Apple store?

I'm sure you're ready to turn in the computer for repair or troubleshooting but I have a couple of suggestions if you haven't tried them already. First, when you open Disk Utility from your installation disc, on the bottom after selecting your hard drive, what does it say next to S.M.A.R.T. status? Does it say "Failing"? My experience is that this finds problems with hard drives better than Apple Hardware Test. If it says "Verified", have you tried to re-install your operating system, either "Archive and Install" or "Erase and Install?" I would attempt an Archive and Install first, then an Erase and Install and see how that goes. Good luck.

  • Mouse freezes in login window (reproducible)

    Hi,
There are numerous "mouse freezes" topics but I didn't see this exact one. I'm using a ms usb/wireless mouse. It worked fine pre-leopard/tiger. If I continuously move my mouse after I select the "Login Window ..." (from user name of menu bar), the mouse freezes (i.e., the pointer will not move) when the login window appears.
I have to shutdown and restart the mac in order to free up the mouse.
I have a couple of questions and remarks:
    1. Is there another way to unfreeze the mouse?
    2. I've done a restart (command-control-power) but the mouse is still frozen.
    3. I've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC but problem persists.
    tia.
    rollin'

I have the exact same issue. Sometimes logging out (shiftoption+commandQ) works for me... but yeah, it's really annoying. And my mouse is a USB Apple Mighty Mouse.
