After 10.9.2 update, boot problems
Late 2011, mac bookpro, did the 10.9.2 Mevericks update last night, all restart well, worked with it a few hours then turn it off, this morning it will not give me a welcome or password screen, stayed before, just blank Please help?
Thanks for the help! What I did was press Shift to start up on Safe Mode, then did well so the recommendation was to restart immediately, I did and it took a bit longer the first couple times to pass from gray screen to the welcome screen, but now is working well. It did mess up some log in app's 3rd party but, re enter them and is fine.
Hope Apple will advise on this conflicts with 3rd party app's if that was the case, so we know what to do if something happens. Is all great now, thank for your help!!

Hello all,
Yesterday I got back from spring break and found out there was a new update to ML (10.8.3). After reading a bit, I found out that the new update supported Windows 8 via Bootcamp, so I uninstalled the old Windows 8 I ages ago via Boot Camp Assistant, and updated my OS to 10.8.3. Then, after attempting to install Windows 8 via Boot Camp Assistant, now it rejects my legit copy of Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, with a message saying, "Need 64-bit Windows 8"
A few months after Windows 8 came out, I read up an online guide to install Windows 8 without Apple's official support and it WORKED just fine. I just wanted to reinstall using the official support this time, and see what I get. Haha.
Please help me if you have a solution to this. (No way buying another copy of Windows 8)
Thanks.Had this problem too, found a solution.
1) Download the 64bit Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx)
2) Go through the Boot Camp process, selecting the downloaded .iso as your image.
3) As soon as your computer restarts, hold the option key. Boot back into OSX.
4) Go through the boot camp process again, BUT only ticking the first two options (in other words, don't touch the partition) selecting your original Windows 8 copy as your image.
5) Reboot while pressing the option key, select the (in my case) USB.
6) Proceed as normal - worked for me. -
When i use dvi link everythings ok...But when i use minidisplay link macpro not shoutdown because kernel panic...But when i change display options macpro is normal shoutdown...Help me please
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - no problem

After 10.5.7 update : sync problem
I have the same problem as these gentlemen.
http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Office/[email protected]@
It seems to be related to 10.5.7
Never had this before.
As M$oft is mute as usual (laptop hunters anyone ?),
I thought someone could help here…
10.5.7 was made with ComboI first removed syncing ~/Library/PubSub but this did not help too much.
I removed the contents of ~/.FileSync from clients (2) and server. Since the clients have FileVault home dirs that requires being logged in everywhere.
The old SQLite db in ~/.FileSync directory was 16MB, the new one 1.8MB. After that, I have seem an improved responsiveness. Still not something extremely fast, but good enough.
It would be good if there was some sort of 'reclaim' functionality in the SQLite db that underlies home syncing, just like there is for FileVaulted home directories. -
Satellite A660 - USB boot problems after BIOS update
Hello,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and recently have update the BIOS to the latest version (1.80). Since then the notebook will freeze on the boot screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the flash memory connected and also if I connect it after I enter the boot menu or the BIOS setup. I can even boot from it like this.
As far as I am concerned this is a serious regression. Is there any way I can downgrade the BIOS version, or any other way to fix this issue ? I rely heavily on external USB drives.
Regards,
Claudiu.I too am having problems with my A660 since upgrading to 1.80 bios - the HDD/SD utility, the pc health monitor and half the other toshiba utilities no longer work because they can't recognize the bios and actually tell me this... I get an error message telling me ''can't get bios type''...
On top of this I get the boot problem as well - I have to unplug half of my USB devices to get the laptop to boot properly...
And now - one month into owning my new A660 - after a hard drive failure, a problem with the Broadcom internal wireless adaptor I now have the internal TV tuner no longer working and have no idea how to fix it...
My gut feeling is that the sooner I can downgrade to the original factory bios the BETTER - and wait for another bios update to come along that is not faulty/buggy...
HOPE someone can help me with this...

Mac Pro Boot Problems After 10.6.2 Update
After installing the latest version of snow leopard I am now having boot problems on my mac pro.
Symptoms;
-Screen resolution is incorrect at apple splash screen.
-Takes a lot longer than usual to boot.
-Once booted the blue tooth magic mouse isn't imediately reckonised, takes a while to find that.
-Once the mouse is finally reckonised it can move around but can't click on anything or bring up the dock. Tried a wired mouse, had the same problem.
-The keyboard is also not appearing to do anything, none of the shortcuts or quick keys work..
Had exactly the same problem after 3 restarts but on the 4th after leaving it for a good 20-30minutes it setled down and everything was working okay. However this is a recurring problem as I had the same thing yesterday...
I have a my 10.5.8 system backed up on an external so I am running from that at the moment. Don't want to go back to snowy til these problems are solved.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Mid 2006 iMac Boot Problem (Since latest firmware update)
I have a Mid 2006 17" iMac. Ever since the latest firmware update in early December, about every other startup I've been having boot problems. After the white screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning wheel it goes to a blue screen like normal, but instead of the 'Loading Mac OS X' white window popping up it stays blue and the spinning loading wheel starts. I've left it loading for quite a while before and nothing changes. I have to do a force shut off by holding the power button. and then I start it up and it will boot normally.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!Actually, I think it'san early 2006.

I have an older computer and can no longer update. After the latest Apple update I can no longer access my e-mail on my mac. I can view it on my iphone and on icloud. Is there a solution to this problem?
Apple changed MobileMe to iCloud and then restricted iCloud to 10.7 users only unfortunately
If your machine is a 64 bit processor Intel Mac you can upgrade to 10.7 for $29, however a lot of your 10.5/10.6/Rosetta based software could cease to function, especially third party hardware drivers for printers, fax machines, all-in-ones, scanners etc.
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also depending how old the machine is, if it can accept 4GB of RAM (preferred), older video card, may not run 10.7 very well or stable.
My advice is to keep at 10.6.8, get a web based email service that's plaform/hardware neutral, forward your iPhone emails there. Gmail/Yahoo Mail for instance.
When your ready for new hardware and all new software, then buy a new machine.
If your going to go to 10.7 on your present hardware, I advise you clone 10.6.8 to a external drive first, that way you can c boot off the 10.6 disk erase the drive completely (necessary to remove hidden Lion Recovery Partition) and option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and reverse clone.

Mac mini not booting up with 8GB memory after 10.7.2 update
My mac mini is not booting up with 8GB of memory after the 10.7.2 update. It just keeps on beeping and flashing the led.
If I take out the upper DIMM (Bank 1) It boots just fine, and it does so with either one of the 4GB DIMMs in Bank 0, so the DIMMs are fine. It also boots up fine with two 1GB DIMMs installed simultaneously, so the Bank 1 seems to be somehow working as well.
This trouble started right after the Lion recovery update, meaning the mini has never booted with the full 8GB installed after the update.
It worked just fine before that, with the full 8GB of memory installed.
Anyone else having similar problems?
Cheers, Otto.I have upgraded my 2011 Macbook Pro and my 2011 Mini Server
to 8 gig with Corsair RAM and have had no issues
(CMSA8GX3M2A1333C9). What brand RAM was used?
There have been issues in the past with some RAM
brands.
Something to try is a PRAM reset with the 8 gig installed.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh26871.html
Also, make sure the Minis are booting into 64 bit mode.
Open Applications->Utilities->System Information
On the left side click the software heading. There should be a line
64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes
This should be the default for 2010 and 2011, but something could
have got hosed. -
Kernel panic on first boot after 10.6.8 update
Hi,
Here are the fact:
1) I systematically get a kernel panic on first boot after an attempt to update to 10.6.8 (was able to revert to 10.6.7 using Time Machine; now I'm running my tests on a clone). While doing the update, there are NO USB connexion to my laptop, nor ethernet connexion. Only the power cable.
2) I DO NOT use the software Hands Off which is known to cause such an issue
3) I've tested this on two different hard drive (with a clone of my system)
4) I disabled all third app on startup just to be sure this wasn't a conflict problem
5) After a kernel panic, I'm always able to boot in safe mode
6) I did try both the normal update and the combo update (same result)
Now I'm kinda stuck. The next test I'm thinking performing is to update while in safe mode. But I don't know if it will help.
And yes, my permissions are all fine. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? I believe I need to be in 10.6.8 in order to update to Lion?
Many thanks in advance!
ParneixHi,
Sorry about that. Below you'll find the log of my latest kernel panic.
I did follow instructions suggested by user "ds store". The only "kext" file that I've got (by running the commands in the Terminal) was related to the software LittleSnitch. I downloaded it again in order to run the uninstaller. I'll try again to update to 10.6.8 under those conditions and report here.

Problems after 10.6.8 Update?
Ever since I updated my Mac to 10.6.8, I have been having problems with my MBP freezing. It will freeze, then come back and I have to re-launch finder. Also, MS Outlook 2011 freezes when I delete mail, or simply try to quit it(Force Quit). Safari freezes when it opens up too, and it does what a PC does upon login, "warm up" so i can no longer start doing what ever immediately. Is anyone else having this problem?
My 2011 MBP 13" i7 has had no issues whatsoever after
10.6.8 update. However, the process I went through was
as follows:
1. Booted my MBP from a clone on a Firewire drive.
(hard drives are so cheap these days there is no
excuse not to have a clone or TM backup)
2. Ran a repair disk on the internal drive using
Disk Warrior. Disk Utility repair disk will work
as well. I use Disk Warrior because I can also
run a check for corrupt files.
3. Repaired permissions on the internal drive.
4. Rebooted to internal drive.
5. Updated my clone, so that I have a clean system
to revert to.
6. Downloaded the Combo update and ran it.
7. After reboot, repaired permissions.
Now, for those of you who are having slow systems after
the update, check process monitor to see what is sucking
up the CPU time. Then go from there.
For those of you with system freezing issues, boot in safe
mode. If the problems go away, then some driver or process
is being loaded at normal boot that is causing the problem.
Also, if you are using any "add ons" to applications such as
Safari or Mail, disable them, if you can, and see if the issue
persists.
With all this said, yes my MBP is running just fine with 10.6.8,
but my 2010 Mini has annoying audio issues with the update.
There may be more on it, but the audio issues are enough
for me to go back to 10.6.7, since this is part of my
entertainment system. -
HELP... after 10.4.11 update I can't boot past the blue screen
HELP... after 10.4.11 update I can't boot past the blue screen, and it is pretty frustrating, to say the least. Here's what happened last night:
I installed elgato's eyetv 250, and at the end it asked to update the software. I did so, and when I tried to run it again it said I had to be running 10.4.11. I quickly went over and downloaded the 10.4.11 combo updater to my desktop and proceeded to repair permissions on my disk so I could run the updater.
I repaired permissions and started the updater. It got halfway through updating and said something like it could not finish and stopped. No reason why - it just stopped. I tried it again, and it did the same thing after going about 25 to 30 percent through the updating process. I thought that was very odd, so I checked, and I was running 10.4.9.
I thought I needed to get the 10.4.10 update, so I downloaded the combo updater several times. It would not run, giving me some error message that it would not even open, so I thought I needed to restart my computer to get it to run. I did so.
That's when my computer would not boot. It gets through the initial white screen with the logo in the middle and the revolving circle, and while it stays there for a long time the fans run increasingly faster. They tame down, and then the blue screen with "Mac OS" on it and the blue progress bar comes up. There is no blue progress bar, though... that's where it stops and will not go any further.
Can ANYBODY help me get this thing booted back up? It was so late last night that before I started I didn't back the Mac up, and of course I have a project on there that I need to finish Saturday afternoon for a company.
ANY HELP WILL BE SO GLADLY APPRECIATED. If you can give me step by step instructions on what to do, you will surely be blessed! Thanks for any help,
Barry

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

Be sure to use Preserve Users & Settings. -
Will not start even in safe boot after installing latest camera update
MacBook Pro will not start even in safe boot after installing latest camera update.
I started my machine and did a software update. Only the camera update needed. So installed and when required I pressed restart. It restarted and did install. Then restarted again. I expected to get to the login screen and it turned itself off. Tried three more times. Each time shutting off. I unplugged everything, and pressed start waiting for log in window. No it shutdown before the log in window. I then tried safe mode and that did not work either on three more occasions.I have managed to resolve some issues. I can now restart the machine via a CD boot. If I do cmd C into something like tech tool pro, then restart from that disks menu it restarts every time.
If I try a safe start it shuts down. If I try a normal start it shuts down. I have managed to repair permissions and that cleared up some start up permissions but with no improvement to the boot problem. The only way to load is via the cmd-C boot option. Any other ideas? -
Late2012 no boot after 10.8.4 update
Hi! I already make an update from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 and after that MacMini won't boot. It hangs after the grey screen with Apple logo and then a half gray screen or blinking gray screen appears. MacMini has a directly HDMI Philips screen and Sonnet Echo Express SE by Thunderbolt followed by an adaptor of MiniDisplayPort to VGA to another screen.
I try to change the screen with a simply CinemaDisplay 23" with only the stock HDMI-DVI adapter with no results also.
I only have control if I disconnect the screens from HDMI or Thunderbolt and enter through Screen Sharing.
I have to downgrade to 10.8.3 to keep working with that MacMini. I have seen a very similar issue with others Minis but also in 10.8.3!!
Anyone has the same issue with 10.8.4??Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal. -
No BOOT after 10.8.3 UPDATE
Hi after updating to 10.8.3 i'm stucked in the grey boot screen.
Booting in verbose mode shows me
disk0s2 : media is not present
in single user mode if i launch fsck -yf it shows me:
Failed to issue COM RESET succesfully after 3 attempts. Failing..
disk0s2: no suck device
update/reload mount for / failed: Device not configured
The only way to make the system active is to boot with TARGET option and select the disk.then it boots properly..
any help how to fix that s°*T of update?
Thank youHold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start in Recovery HD. Then, open Disk Utility, select your OS X partition on the sidebar and verify the disk. Is it OK? If not, repair it.
If it doesn't show any problem, the update damaged the operating system. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. You won't lose anything you had stored before updating.
Sometimes, problems like this happen after a OS X update, and we don't know exactly their reasons. Maybe a third-party extension, maybe a corrupted OS X package, maybe a hard disk failure. To prevent problems like yours, I recommend to install a maintenance update as OS X 10.8.3 downloading the Combo version from the Apple webpage. This version gives less problems than the version you download from the App Store and it can be used to update all your Macs downloading that update once
