After 3.1.1 update my ipod is completely dead

So...
As of right now I'm quite angry, as the update that seems to be, solely, to keep individuals from jail breaking Ipods, as I have NOT done, has completely killed my Ipod touch 2g. It was working fine with the 3.0 and now suddenly, immediately after updating, nothing at all in the entire world will get it to turn on. No DFU mode NO restoration, nothing at all. 5 seconds on power button, 10 seconds on power and home, 30 seconds on home. Nothing at all. No flicker, no life. I downloaded DFU helper to make sure I got the timing perfectly. It will not start and i completely and entirely blame this new OS for the death of my entertainment device. It had a full battery when it died, left it on the charger overnight and all it did was get warm near the plug area. I cant, for obvious reasons, get my serial number for my Ipod because its dead AND for some reason it isnt showing up in my registered products on my Itunes Account so there is no way for me to start the online support contact stuff.
All I need to know is that seeing as this is the fault of Apple hardware will they give me a new Ipod touch regardless of my warranty status, which right now i cant seem to check because i cant get the serial number, weird??????

I figured it would be on the back so i was looking for it when this first happened but it was scratched to crap in the area where it is and i couldn't see it.
Managed to get a magnifying glass out and decipher the SN last night.
Still wondering if apple would replace an item their hardware screwed up if the item isn't under warranty still. Doesn't pertain to me but definitely interests me.

...Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...
I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.
This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"
iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,
1) Has anyone experienced this?
2) Has anyone SOLVED it?
Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.
I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.

To begin the discussion, let's throw in a few possibilities:
1. Is your iPod in the process of being "jail-broken"? If so, I'd avoid the risk and stick with standard Apple firmware. Some hacks end up with dead iPods.
2. Do you use iTunes for syncing? Only use Apple software for managing your file system.
3. Are you Windows or Apple? For whatever it's worth, I've only seen this happen with Windows machines.
No solutions here - but maybe some hopeful suggestions.

after updating the software, I noticed it would not hold a charge. Saw an error on itunes saying ipod needs to restore. well I didn't do it and now the thing does not charge, I cannot reset it to restore. It is completely dead. itunes and windows, neither recognizes ipod.

I jailbroke my ipod about a year ago and it started to glitch and not allow me to download apps. It woud also crash a lot! I had the understanding that if you were to update the ipod then it would unjailbreak it. So from the ipod itself, i updated it and now it wont turn on or charge. it wont even come up on my itunes when i plug it in to my computer. I cant use it and i dont like that. Anybody know what i can do?

Try to force your iPod into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the computer's USB cord. Press and hold the home button while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while the iPod starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. Ipod classic completely dead?

My 80GB Ipod classic is completely frozen. It was fine, plugged into a speaker dock and then I got a new speaker dock and put it on and it immediately died. I can't do the "5 R's" because I can't get any response from it at all, the screen is completely black. It isn't showing up in Itunes or in Windows. Is the battery dead or something more serious? If it is a dead battery how do I go about replacing it?

okay looks like i got mine sorted out.
I had my ipod classic charged and believed the battery to be almost full when i tried to turn it on. like yours, no response and completely dead. i plugged it in and left it for 10 mins...nothing! not even a charging sign on the screen. then i heard if the battery is completely dead you may need to charge if for an hour or so before it comes back to life - thats what i did and its back to life.
if yours is still not working prob a battery problem - you can send it to ipod to replace the battery or you can buy them online and change them yourself (look it up in google)

After 10.4.10 update G5 XServe is completely unresponsive

I rebooted after doing today's 10.4.10 OSX Server update. Now the Xserve won't boot. I can boot from the install disc, run disc utilities, all seems fine. I can mount the boot volumes via Terminal, etc. No problems at all. But when I try to boot I just get stuck on the initial apple logo screen. The spinning disc never appears. After a while the fans go on high. I've let it sit for hours and nothing happens. When I check the system logs there are no new entries since I ran the update. Any ideas? I'm really out of things to try...

Your in a place that's kind of hard to troubleshoot. The apple screen comes up when the PRAM is handing the boot over to BootX so it can load the kernel and then Unix and then you get the blue screen when the Apple stuff loads.
The logs haven't updated since before the update probably because the system has never booted to the point where logging starts.
Get a keyboard on the machine and try booting while holding down the CMD+S keys. That will bring you into single user mode, which would mean that the kernel and Unix loaded. I don't think you'll get there, but it's worth a try.
If that doesn't work, you could try booting off the Install CD and checking the logs to make sure that the update went okay, check to make sure that you have a kernel and BootX, run bless. If it's a PPC machine, you could consider booting into Open Firmware and resetting it, that's just a general principles suggestion, but if it's got bad settings, it may not be able to load BootX.
You may want to hire some help, or even reinstall selecting the upgrade option, so no data is harmed (hopefully).

Anyone else have problems after QT 7.3 update? My FCE is dead in the water

Since updating my QT to 7.3 my FCE will no longer export using QT conversion, nor will it allow clips to be installed into the time line. An "insufficient content for edit" comes up whether I try to install between other clips already in place or when I try to install a clip at the end. My FCE is, once again, dead in the water after a QT update.
I've looked for a QT 7.3 uninstaller but to no avail.

Here's what happened.
After doing everything by the book, nothing worked-except that unsufficient edit warning-so I shut down for a few minutes and figured I'd try a few things.
After doing a cold reboot I opened the existing file with 7 hours of clips. It had an opening to it which had been shortened. I tried to insert a clip, and insufficient edit popped up again. I took the clip and tried to drag it to the timeline, nothing. I went to the absolute end of the timeline, tried dropping the clip onto a clean video/audio track and it appeared. That was a start. I took the clip and moved it to the tracks with existing video and audio (V1, A1,2) and it moved toward the existing clips with no problem.
I deleted the clip from the timeline and tried to install the clip through the canvas and it took. Don't ask me how or why, but for some reason it would not allow clips onto the timeline until it was 'retrained' for lack of a better term. It is now taking clips as it did before the troubles.
I'm wondering if there was some type of 'ghost' clip which just wouldn't go away until it was overwritten manually-although overwrite through the canvas wouldn't work before. Perhaps the problem and the updates were coincidental but experience would say no. I would guess I tripped something which may be difficult to reproduce, but it's returned as it was. Thanks for reminding me to do the maintenance, it had to help in the overall. But I'll remained thrilled that it works but baffled why it didn't.
