After 8.1, Shuffle won't play items in Artist order

I used to randomly fill my Shuffle from my playlist and then play the songs in order by artist name. Since upgrading to 8.1, I am no longer able to do this. I've restored my Shuffle, clicked on the Artist column to toggle it a few times. In short, I've tried everything I can think of. This is my 4th iPod, so I'm used to going through a bit of hassle every time a major upgrade happens, but this one I can't overcome. Any suggestions?

I posted this in another thread, but I think it applies here, too:
After some testing, I think the problem is tied to when "Replace all item when Autofilling" is checked under the Autofill settings. iTunes is not correctly creating the contents database file, so it's confused as to which song is which.
I discovered, however, when you reconnect the shuffle after playing a song (which udates the Playcount and Last Played info), the database repairs itself and the songs play in the correct order.
If I uncheck "Replace all item when Autofilling", manually delete the shuffle's contents, then Autofill, everything is again fine.
It works for me...try it. It's a half-a**ed solution, but it will do until Apple fixes this bug

  • Ipod shuffle won't play tracks in order

My ipod shuffle won't play tracks in order even when I have the shuffle button off. I have sync'd it on itunes to play in order but it just continues to shuffle all the tracks! Please help. Thanks

I found a post about this problem from November, it is apparently how the iPod Shuffle handles podcasts. It sorts them in REVERSE chronological order, and moves them to the top of the play list. It's unbelievable that Apple has let a problem like this persist for so long.
Here is the discussion I mentioned:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6259808&#6259808
It offers a way to partially fix the problem, but one that I find entirely unacceptable. The only lasting solution mentioned was to buy a different mp3 player, which I'll be doing as soon as I return my Shuffle and get my money back.
The sad thing is that in addition to Apple losing money on the sale of a Shuffle, they're also loosing money on songs I would be purchasing from iTunes (I got a $20 gift certificate for my b-day that I'm going to sell to buy other music that will play on a non-Apple mp3 player), and they might loose potential customers because I've been complaining about this to everybody I know!

Correction, I found a discussion dealing with this from 2005!

  • IPod Shuffle does not play podcasts in set order

I see others have been having this trouble and have tried the recommendations but they are not working.
I have tried to set the play order of podcasts and am only successful when I sort them by time. If I download a number of podcasts on the same day (someone said that they play by download date) I cannot set the play order. Someone said to drag the podcast to the desired order and that does not work with podcasts. It might with albums but not with podcasts.
In addition, someone said to drag each podcast to the iPod in the order you want each one played. That does not work, either. Finally, if I do settle for the order displayed in the iPod play list and I haven't sorted by time, the Shuffle will not play them in the order played in iTunes.
I have Shuffle set in iTunes to repeat all play; not shuffle. I don't use autofill. I'm sure I'm setting the button on the back of the Shuffle to play in order. Is there something I'm overlooking?
I'm running the latest of both iTunes and iPod Shuffle on Windows XP Pro. I just re-loaded this software on a new computer and had the same problem with XP Pro on the old computer.
Am I asking too much from iTunes? I don't use it for music. Do I actually need a more sophisticated program other then iTunes if I use Shuffle only for podcasts?

That is in fact how podacsts work in the iTunes/iPod system. The only sorting is based on release date (time) which is set and sortable only in iTunes. You aren't missing anything, and nothing you do subsequently will affect that order; podcasts are and are treated differently.

  • IPod Shuffle won't play in sequence

Playing my tracks on the first position, which is supposed to play tracks in order, the same three tracks (of fourteen or so) played in a circle after my first synch; now, after my second, each track simply plays repeatedly.
The only way to avoid this I've found is to used the voice-over button, and select each track in turn when the one I've just listened to starts its repeat.
Is there a fix for this, (I've already used the iTunes reset (or whatever it's called) button, which made no difference), or should I return the iPod to the shop?
    Many thanks for any help.

It's important to note that the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle is a very simple device.  It acts like a single playlist and you load it manually using iTunes.  Then you play that one and only playlist in random order or playlist order.
The 3rd and 4th gen shuffle is designed to be more like the "big" iPods.  You can set it up for automatic syncing and it can have multiple playlists on it.  Because it does not have a screen, you use VoiceOver to "navigate" and select the playlist you want to use.  The default playlist is the All Songs list.
It's important to distinguish the terms "podcast" from "episode."  The individual items on the shuffle are podcast episodes.  Each podcast (all episodes on the shuffle from the same podcast) acts as a separate playlist, with the episodes of the podcast on the list.  When you use VoiceOver, those podcasts are on VoiceOver playlist menu.  So, you do not need to create a playlist with podcast episodes. NOTE:  When you select a podcast using VoiceOver, it does not matter if the power switch is set to shuffle or play-in-order.
HOWEVER, if you want to replicate how the old shuffle works, you can create a playlist on the shuffle, and call it "iPod Podcasts" (or whatever you want).  That one playlist is equal to your old shuffle.  If you are loading the shuffle manually (by dragging items to the shuffle), you need to create the playlist in iTunes ON THE SHUFFLE, so that it appears on the shuffle's content list (indented below the shuffle in the sidebar).  When you manually load the podcasts to the shuffle, instead of dragging the episodes to the overall shuffle, drag them to that playlist.  You can then select the playlist (on the shuffle's content list) and adjust the playlist order as desired.  So, it is like loading your old shuffle, except you are acting on a single playlist on the shuffle instead of the overall shuffle.
When using the shuffle, use VoiceOver to select that "iPod Podcasts" playlist.  Now, just like the old shuffle, to play podcasts, the power switch needs to be in the play-in-order position.  So, when you are in that playlist, it works like your old shuffle.
The benefit of the new shuffle is that you can create multiple playlists.  So, if you want a few songs on the shuffle, create a playlist called "iPod Songs" and put your favorites songs on it.  They are kept separate from the podcasts, and you can switch back and forth between the two playlists using VoiceOver.

  • Shuffle won't play .m4p audio file

On my shuffle all but 2 songs are ripped from Cds
The only two songs in the .m4p format won’t play on my iPod
Restored and up dated the iPod a couple dozen times and tried to reformat the tracks but I’m at a loss and need some help.
    If it help they're "Protected"

    I just solved the issue.
Even though my computer was already authorized, I re-authorized it and now I can transfer purchased music to my Shuffle.
Can you currently play the purchased music in iTunes? I just tried to play one of my purchased songs and, sure enough, it wasn't authorized. I logged into my account and voila! However, it now says I have authorized 2 out of my 5 authorizations, even though this is my only computer...

  • Shuffle does not play playlist in the order set in itunes, when play in order is selected

My new shuffle does not play the songs on a playlist in the correct order (as they appear in itunes), my previous shuffle allowed me to see tha tracks and swith the order.
Why won't this new shuffle play in the order I want (shuffle isn't selected)
Is there a way to see the tracks and order loaded onto the shuffle?
    Thanks
    Mark

I FINALLY GOT IT! after months of relentless synching/autofilling problems on my 4th generation i figured out the solution.
this is what i did: plugged in ipod on off mode~>manually deleting my ipod's songs~>restored factory settings~>unchecked automatic synch~>made a new playlist with exactly the songs & order i wanted for my ipod (just dragged old playlists into the new one)~>then autofilled that new playlist into my ipod. came out like a charm! (before u autofill UNCHECK random add songs)
my ipod always ended up autofilling/synching my customized playlists wrong or it would automatically do my music library (and that was way unorganized), so this worked.

  • My Playlists won't play in the correct order

My problem, whenever I play my playlist(s) on my shuffle, they play in alphabetical order by the artist. I can't figure out how to change this setting.
When I'm in ITunes and my shuffle's connected I can sync my playlist(s) normally.
After I sync there are two "items" listed under my IPod Shuffle: "Music" which has all the songs in my playlist but ordered alphabetically by artist, and "Playlist" which has the same songs but ordered correctly.
It's obvious that the shuffle's playing the "Music" folder as opposed to "Playlist", and I've tried changing the order of songs in "Music", but nothing can be edited.
It's very frustrating that I can't figure out how to get my songs to play in the correct order. Can someone please share with me how to fix this issue?
    Thanks.

Maybe I'm reading the posts wrong, but I'm still having problems with the play order/copy to play order.
I have a playlist where I drag any new song I download. The playlist is ordered in the column on the left with the triangle. The latest song is added as number 1 on the playlist and the triangle is facing down.
On my 2nd gen shuffle, the ipod just copied any order as chosen in iTunes. On the first sync with 4th gen, the order was reversed. A long search pointed me to the "copy to play order". If I selected (or maybe rather if I deselect it), the list order is reversed (i.e. the last added song is put last), while the triangle is still facing down. The list is sync correctly (i.e. the last added song is put first), but any new song added to the playlist in iTunes is put before the (originally) last song.
Any time I click the "copy to play order", the order reverses, so now I don't know when I select and when I deselect it. In short, how do I retain the function of any added song to be put on the top of the list and have that order copied to the Shuffle.
Tnx. (ps sorry for the confusing explanation, but I just don't get it. In any case, it is very frustrating. Why is iTunes making decisions about play orders for me?)

  • 2nd gen shuffle won't play podcasts after upgrading to Itunes 7.2(34)

I use my shuffle to listen to podcasts only. Last week afer upgrading Itunes it stopped playing and the LED would flash alternating green and orange. I did the 5 R's apple recommends and it still would not work. I even downloaded Apple's Ipod Reset Utility, it still would not work. I took it to the Genius Bar at the apple store because it is only 3 months old and they gave me a new shuffle. After returning home and trying to sync the new shuffle to my podcasts it had the same problem as the previous shuffle. This got me to thinking it was something besides the shuffle. The only thing I could think of was the new version of Itunes. So I tried to put other things on there besides podcasts. I added itunes store bought music, both drm and drm free, mp3 and aac music that I ripped in itunes before and mp3 and aac podcasts that I have downloaded. The shuffle played all the music but skipped over the podcasts. Please help. I was able to play these podcasts before on the shuffle so the file type is not an issue. I can play the podcasts on my video Ipod. I can even play them on the shuffle via itunes when it is connected to my computer. I don't know what to do and I am seriously falling behind on my podcasts. Any tips would be appreciated

Hello FrayedSo, Sorry to read your having a difficult time with your shuffle and podcasts.
As you mentioned earlier this is your second shuffle and it is able to play songs you purchase or put onto it but it skips past the Podcasts.
Are you playing these podcasts as part of a Playlist? or is this happening in shuffle mode?
Some of the things you could do to possibly assist with troubleshooting your issue are below.
Make sure to Consolidate your iTunes Library so all your information is backed up to your iTunes Music folder. You can do this by going to Advanced-Consolidate Library.
To quote a part in Knowledge Base 30058
"Playing Audiobooks and podcasts on iPod shuffle
When iPod shuffle is set to shuffle songs it will play all the audio files on iPod shuffle that are not audiobooks. Podcasts of type .m4b or AAC will not play on iPod shuffle when it is in shuffle mode, which is the intended behavior, although a podcast of type .mp3 or .wav may play while in shuffle mode. To play an audiobook or podcast that is on iPod shuffle, set the switch on iPod shuffle to play in order."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300558
Another thing you could try. Create a new user account on your Windows System and download some podcasts and sync it to your shuffle and see if the same issue occurs.

  • Repeated fault (Shuffles won't play): have others experienced this?

The fault: the iPod Shuffle (2nd gen.) syncs happily with the host computer, and downloaded tracks will play through the computer. But when I disconnect the iPod and press Play, all I get is the green-orange-orange sequence that says "Please Restore me". Restore does not cure it, nor does Reset using the iPod Reset Utility (downloaded separately from Apple).
This has now happened to me on THREE new iPod Shuffles. (Since my first purchase in September 2008, I have had four replacements from Apple, so five Shuffles in all - is this a record? Numbers 3-5 all failed with the problem just outlined - no. 3 after some use, nos. 4 and 5 out of the box. Nos. 1 and 2 failed but not with this fault.)
Normally I sync with iTunes on a PC (XP Home) but I have also synced no. 5 with my partner's iMac (after resetting with the OS X version of the Reset utility) and the result is the same.
Just now the problem is with Apple and the dealer (iPod no. 5 was couriered directly to me by Apple, nos. 2-4 were replacements through the dealer).
It looks (to the Apple technical support folk) like a hardware problem - so I'd be interested in knowing if any other recent purchasers of Shuffles have had this problem. I'm in Australia, by the way.
    Thanks.

Following further tests (I even have two Shuffles to test with now, as no one has asked for no. 4 back yet!):
Thanks kbeartx. I now think you're 100% right. I was looking in the wrong direction, being quite unaware of 'skip when shuffling'. I'm posting a fuller explanation of how my dealers and the Apple technical support staff failed to ask the right questions (and the Shuffle and iTunes documentation could be improved) but here are the questions I and they failed to ask:
A did the error code flash when you tried to switch the iPod on, or only after you had switched on and then pressed play?
    B are you using podcasts?
C (if so) is your Pod set to Shuffle? (if so, try play-in-order to see if it makes a difference)
(The point of A is that I now understand that there are two error codes used by the Shuffle - well-separated in the list in the pdf documentation - but they occur in different contexts, one when you switch the Shuffle on, the other only when after switching on you press any button. [OK they also last different durations, but because I was not aware there were the two I did not reach for the stopwatch...])

  • New, charged 2nd gen Shuffle won't play--Windows XP, newest version iTunes

It is fully charged. It shows up under devices in iTunes (it says in Disk Manager though that it is "Apple iPod UBS device" which I believe is a bad thing). I click to load randomly. It shows as updating. I disconnect and try to play--nothing. I've tested to make sure it is not on hold. I've restored TWICE.
The other weird thing is that in the Contents section it shows my entire library--not what is supposedly on my shuffle.
    Any suggestions?

Yes... select ALL the Contents and hit Delete. Now DRAG and DROP some songs onto the Shuffle from your library.

  • IPOD Shuffle Won't Play Music

    Hi,
I just received an IPOD shuffle and have seemed to install it correctly. I already had Itunes on my laptop and even updated it. The ipod is recognized by Windows and by ITunes. It even seems to copy the files to the Ipod but when I disconnect it and try to play the songs nothing works. I have reset the Ipod and uninstalled/reinstalled the software. Can someone please advise?
    Thanks!
      Windows XP

It does very little good to simply state that things seem to happen or not, or that things simply don't work. Describe exactly what is going on.
    1. Why does it only seem to transfer music? How, exactly, are you trying to make it do that?
    2. What, exactly, happens when you do it that way? What do you see happening in iTunes? What does the iPod's playlist look like? What messages do you get in iTunes when you think it's done?
As for the playing, more of the same.
    1. How, exactly, are you trying to make it play music?
    2. What, exactly, happens when you try it that way? What does the Shuffle do in terms or lights or anything else?

  • IPod Shuffle won't play at all

I've restored, reset, reinstalled, updated & nothing lets me play the music that's been downloaded from ITunes. I can see the IPod in my ITunes window & it updates ok.I've tested the earplugs on another device & they're ok. The green light comes on, press buttons, nothing happens. I've done everything that supposed to help, but nothing. I've had this for several months & have never gotten to use. I must say I'm about fed up. Any help, please???

I have the same problem. Went to Apple store and they upgraded the software it it started to work. Turns out I already had upgraded software and when I tried the shuffle at home it would work. I got it working a gain and no it has stopped. I will be going back to the apple store. I think they have a reoccuring issue with many of their product. Other are having similiar issues.

  • After Effets, audio clip won't play in multiple comps

Hello,  I am currently working within AE CS3 and am experiencing a problem.
I edited an audio clip within AE and pre-composed those 4 Layers.
When I copy and paste a section of this audio pre-comp into a nother comp (in order to sync animations to audio only using the section of audio that is relevent to the section I'm animating) it shows up in the layers panel but is "greyed out" in the timeline and will not play.
However if I copy and paste the audio pre-comp in its entirety, it plays with out a problem.
This means that I'm having to reedit the audio pre-comp to time up with the "Main" comp
everytime I bring it into a new comp.
I know there's a solution but I've been strugeling fruitlessly to discover it.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't quite follow. Unless you "chopped it up" by splitting the layers or pre-comp, there is no way to just paste sections - you always copy&paste the entire layer(s). when you do, it is no different than with any other layer - copy&paste retains the temporal alignment of the selections relative to the current time indicator (CTI). So if your time is different between comps, the pasted content will be inserted at different times, which could mean that content ends up outside the comp duration and you only see "empty" tracks. So by all means make sure to correctly sync the times of the comps.

  • How to make ipod shuffle 4th to play podcast in normal order from old to new ones?

It plays only in crazy reverse order from new to old podcasts. I've looked through bunch of forums but didn't find adequate answers. Stupied Apple, it even doesn't have normal support......

The only way you can control the order of podcast episode playback is to put them on a playlist (in iTunes), in any desired order.  Then, sync that playlist to the shuffle.
On the shuffle, set the power switch to the play-in-order (middle) position.  Use VoiceOver to select that playlist.  The podcast episodes should play in playlist order.  Another advantage of this method is being able to "mix and match" pisodes from different podcasts on one continuous playlist.
You can set up the iPod's Podcasts screen in iTunes to select this playlist under Include Episodes from Playlists, which automatically synca changes you make to the playlist (in iTunes) to the shuffle, the next time the shuffle is connected.
