After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?
I booted from my recovery partition, erased my HD, installed the same OS, (Lion, 10.7.5) then restored from my TM.
If it asks if i want to use TM, I say yes. When I chose the drive, it seems to want to start all over, instead of just picking up where I left off.
Is there any way of picking up where I left off?

Hi Frank,
You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see?  Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?
I really appreciate the responses -- especially if you are in the UK as opposed to Ontario.
Why, do you have something against London Ontario?

  • How can two computers use time machine on same Time Capsule?

I just purchased a Time Capsule and successfully backed up my computer. My brother is on the same network but cannot get Time Machine to back him up on the Time Capsule without my backup being deleted.
How does one enable Time Capsule to serve as back up for two different computers?

    There are some options:
Manually delete a number of old backups from the Mac that's "hogging" the space, per #12 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  After "compacting" that sparse bundle per the pink box there, you may be able to limit the maximum size of it, per #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Another is to connect a USB drive to the TC (likely with a powered USB hub), and back the other Mac up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD.

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

iLife is preinstalled on all the Macs. If you purchased iLife in the App Store or your computer came without DVDs, open App Store > Purchases and download the applications. If your Mac came with discs, insert the Applications DVD and install iLife applications

How can I get my time machine to allow me to recover files again?
After upgrading MBA to OS X, the time machine still backs up the files; but, I'm not able to navigate within the time machine or select any folders or files for restore.
I've searched and can not find a solution to the problem that's being encountered.

Yeap that all makes sense now.
Do you only have the current backup showing in the TM display?? Won't it fill in the rest?
Over wireless are you waiting for the indexing to finish.. ??
Previous backup may not show for a couple of hours.
Long short of it.. Mavericks version of TM is a pain.
Sometimes it is easier to completely ignore the TM backup and do the restore manually.
I have posted the details here. See if this helps.

    Hi iVain
Fire up *Disk Utility*, click the Restore tab, then drag your old and new TM drives into the Source and Destination fields. Click Restore, and a complete copy of your old TM files will be made on the new drive. Go to TM preferences and select the new drive, and it will continue backing up just as it left off.
Hope this answers your question. See:

  • Clean Install around Boot Camp partition with time machine file restore

Currently at 10.5.8 on MacBook with a bootcamp partition. I am wondering if I can:
    Make a timemachine backup
Wipe the mac partition, leave bootcamp partition alone
    Install clean 10.6 OS
Use Time Machine to restore non-OS docs, apps, and other files
    Just asking...

Yes, you can. Perform the erase and install normally and then either use Time Machine or the Migration Assistant to restore the backup.

How do I back up my documents from my Macbook on iCloud? or can I only use time machine or external HD?
I think I have missed something in trying to read all of the pages on apple site about icloud.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't back up a computer to iCloud.
You can use any back up software, you should always back up to a different drive.

  • How can I close my Time Machine Sparsebundle so Time Capsule can do a scheduled backup?

"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Your Time Capsule". The backup disk image “/Volumes/Steven Weinberg's Time Caps-1/Steven Weinberg’s MacBook Pro (4).sparsebundle” is already in use."
I have both a Time Capsule and a 2Tb external drive using Time Machine to back up my laptop.
Is it as simple as when the Time Capsule goes to do a backup and finds that the other drive is in the midst of using Time Machine to do its backup that I get this notice on my desktop?
It's 10:30 AM now.  The last Time Capsule backup was almost 12 hours ago.
There have already been 6 Time Machine backups today on the 2nd drive.
Sounds like the Time Capsule really is being blocked from doing its job.
THe 1 Tb Time Capsule backs up to a .sparsebundle document which fills the Time Capsule at 985 Gb.  You can't open and peek inside the .sparsebundle backup file.
The other drive backs up to a .backupdb folder within which are subfolders for each backup which appears to be a complete recreation of thebacked-up 500 Gb hard drive on my MacBook Pro laptop.  And even though there are 37 separate folders with backups going back to Sept 2013 when I installed the second backup drive, it's only used about 500 Gb of its 2 Tb capacity.
    1.  How can I solve my primary problem of freeing up the .sparsebundle file for the Time Capsule?
    2.  Since both drives are using Time Machine to do the backup, why are they producing such diffrent backup file structures?

Have you run Repair Disk on it?
I now realize that the folder in which the problem file(s) are stored on the backup,.DocumentRevisions-V100, is the folder in which OS X stores its versioning data for all users. I am now trying to work out whether I can safely delete these files from the backup
That does get damaged on occasion.  I haven't seen it in quite a while, so it's pretty rare.
You can delete it from the backups, via the TM interface, but you must be able to show invisible items).
First, open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app.  It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this:  <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name).  It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy, do not type, the following after the prompt:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
    and press Return.
You should just see the prompt again.
Then see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12 to delete all the backups of it.
and from the live system filestore so they don't get copied out to a backup again.
Yes. You will, of course, lose all previous versions, but since the file is corrupted, you may have lost some, most, or all of them already.
When done, run the same command to hide the invisible items, but replace the "1" with a zero.

  • Hi! how can I set the time machine/capsule back-up intervals? Heron 2

    HI! EVERYBODY,
HOW CAN I SYNC 2 TIME CAPSULES INSTALLED IN TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, MAIN HOME AND SUMMER HOME?
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

To use different backup intervals use TimeMachineEditor 2.5.3. I do not think syncing two Time Capsule to one another is feasible or possible. For all things Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ

  • How can I tell if time machine is backing up my user folder?

I use time machine, but I'm worried that my user library folder (containing my Mail folders) isn't being backed up. I can't see it when I browse the time machine folders, but then again, I can't see my user library on my dard drive without using the special access in the Go menu anyway.
Note, when setting up my time machine preferences, I can see that my library folder is supposed to be included in the backup (i.e. I have not excluded it). But short of restoring my machine and seeing if my mail contents have changed, how can I be sure this is the case?
    Thanks!

Yes, it's getting backed-up.  To see it, either select it first, then Enter Time Machine; or once there, press Shift+Cmd+G and type ~/Library in the prompt.
You can make it visible permanently, if you want.  Start the Terminal app, copy this after the prompt, and press Return:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
But for Mail, it's much easier; with a Mail window selected, Enter Time Machine and you'll see a special display.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15 for details.

  • How can I recover deleted Time Machine Backups

My internal hard drive was full so I first ran a backup on time machine and reinstalled OSX 10.5.7. I then used time machine to restore my iphoto library, and a few documents. I still had backups going back a couple of months. Unfortunately the next time I backed up it erased all of my old backups and only saved the backup from yesterday. Is there a way to recover old backups from a time machine drive. I turned off time machine and have not written anything to that drive.
How can I recover those old Backups.backupdb.?
