After a fresh install I can't login at tty

At TTY, I'm unable to login, once I enter root and then the password, it instantly re-prompts me to enter the login name. I installed Arch Linux by following the beginner's guide and here I am.
Thank you for your help

I can try, where can I download systemd 204 version?
There's some information about ARM in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ARM
I downloaded systemd from here: http://seblu.net/a/arm/packages/s/systemd/
Sorry, but I have no idea what exactly could be the cause of this problem. I thought I'm the only one with this problem so I didn't investigate it further.

  • IMac - will my raid set be recognized after a fresh install?

I  own an iMac late 2012 and I installed an external raid with two Lacie thunderbolt disks. Will my raid be recognized after a fresh install of mavericks?
    Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42),
Grafica  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512 MB
    Memoria  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Processore  2,9 GHz Intel Core i5

Is this a RAID 0 (mirror) or RAID 1 (striped) setup?
While I am by no means a RAID expert, it seems to me that if you have a software RAID of two external HDs (i.e. set up via Disk Utility or other software), then a fresh (clean) install of OS X would no longer recognize the RAID.
Doing a clean install would wipe OS X's knowledge of the software RAID and you would have to set it up again.  You can certainly set up the software RAID again, but I suspect that would re-initialize the RAID setup on the hard drives and probably wipe previous data.  There IS a Rebuild option, but I have no idea if that would work in a case where you freshly install OS X.
On the other hand, I believe that upgrading OS X (rather than freshly installing the operating system) would preserve the software RAID setup.
Regardless of how you upgrade or reinstall OS X,  back up your data first.

  • IWork is not working on Yosemite after a fresh install from the disk

    Hi,
I've freshly install yosemite on my computer.
I first reinstalled my computer with original Snow Leopard and then made the upgrade to Yosemite.
After that I used the Migration Assistant to transfert my old applications.
Most of them are now running perfectly but I'm still facing issues with iWork.
It refuses to launch with a message error saying that "Pages" for example is not working with this version of Mac OS and I should make al available update.
There are indeed updates available from the App store but I can't download them because it is not available for my apple ID because someone else bought it or I cancelled the buying ?!
It's strange because I bought it with my Macbook Pro in 2010 and even after a fresh install from the disk, the message is still the same...
Any idea how to unlock these updates?

    Actually this doesn't explain everything.
I finally reinstalled Snow Leopard / iWork 09' and then upgraded to Yosemite and everything is working like a charm.
This issue has something to do with the use of the "Application migration tool" from Mac Os X Yosemite to collect old applications to the new os from another installation...
I solved my issue this way because I don't have very valuable applications that I want to transfert but for other users, this could be a real issue...
Thanks a lot for your answer

  • After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?

After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?
I booted from my recovery partition, erased my HD, installed the same OS, (Lion, 10.7.5) then restored from my TM.
If it asks if i want to use TM, I say yes. When I chose the drive, it seems to want to start all over, instead of just picking up where I left off.
Is there any way of picking up where I left off?

    Hi Frank,
You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see?  Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?
I really appreciate the responses -- especially if you are in the UK as opposed to Ontario.
Why, do you have something against London Ontario?

  • How can i gain access to my data on a Time Capsule after a fresh install of Mavericks? I can't access any backups through Time Machine... They appear purple/transparent, and I can't even select them to view their contents. PLEASE HELP!!!

So, I've got several thousand photos, and a decent amount of videos of my daughter, along with a lot of stuff for work stored on my Time Capsule, and now I can't access any of it. I did a fresh install of Mavericks on my MacBook Pro last week sometime, and haven't been able to figure out how to get my files back. Please Help!!! My daughter is 2 and a half, and every picture/video I have of her is locked on this thing. I was planning on making some photo/video projects fo my wife for Christmas, and now I'm definitely not going to be able to pull it off. Her birthday is at the end of January, though, so if I could have it by then, that would rule!
Basically, the bar on the right of the screen has some gray dates, which I can access (all backups after the Mavericks install), and purple dates that go all the way back to March (when I originally purchased and began using the TC) which deny me access/viewing. It's possible that I created a slightly different user name when I reset my MacBook, which I guess is most likely the cause, but I have no idea what to do now to correct it. Thanks for taking the time!

    Mavericks does really nasty stuff..
Try manually mounting the sparsebundle and extract the files you want.
    Yet another Pondini reference. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
We have avoided Mavericks you see knowing that it would cause these kinds of issues..
You never ever load a new OS without doing a disk image beforehand.. TM is not reliable enough or trustworthy to be depended on.
If none of the above work..
I would get a USB drive on the computer and install Mountain Lion or whatever OS you had before you unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks.. Then use TM from that decent installation but mount the sparsebundle and choose the backup from a date well before mavericks was installed.
Once you have extracted the files.. or even done a full restore you might be able to extract the files you want.

  • Can't start X, libXaw.so.8 missing after a fresh install of Arch/xorg

    Hello,
i just did a fresh Install of Arch and also installed the xorg Package plus the fitting driver for my GFX card.
did the usual stuff, configured x11 and now when i try to run x, following error pops up:
xterm: error while loading shared libraries: libXaw.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or direcotry
libXaw is installed, also 100% sure the right drivers for my card are installed (nvidia for a GF8400M)
    Any help on this?

i had the same issue; after conky crashed X on me i was getting the above error whenever i tried to start xterm.  i reinstalled libxaw, xorg, xterm, all to no avail; finally, desperately i tried:
    sudo cp libXaw.so.7 libXaw.so.8
and that fixed it; i know, terrible right? i haven't noticed any negative side effects yet (it's been two weeks or so); i can simply remove libXaw.so.8 to reverse what i did (and re-break xterm), but what's the actual way to fix this?

  • Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

    I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." • Safest way to go after a fresh install of iTunes and Windows

I had to wipe my PC, and my XML file got corrupted and the itl file lost. I went to sync just before I wiped it and got, the message about being able to sync to one library at a time.
As I'm starting from zero again will the iPod recognise the new library as "fresh" and I'll have to wipe the iPod of all the tracks on it?. Which isn't really a problem, as they're all backed up on my external HD.
Or can I put all my music back into iTunes with ratings, and hope the iPod accepts the fresh install?
Which is the best way to go? Empty iTunes and wipe the iPod and start from scratch? Or try and hope it recognises the new install?

These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
iPodRip Software (Free trial: Mac & Windows)
    PodUtil Software (Mac & Windows)
YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
    a) One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
    b) One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
    c) One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough Backup Strategy
    Best of Luck

  • Retrieving old sites after a fresh install

Hi. I made a couple of web sites on iWeb 08 and my hard drive got hosed and i had to do a complete re-install, but have a backup of my ~/home and ~/Library.... What do i have to copy over from my back up to get iWeb to see my sites when i launch the application? I thought i had it all copied over but when i launch iWeb, there is no sign of my old sites and pages. I am guessing that some things are in ~/home/Library and maybe some in ~/Library Application Support and some in ~/Sites....
further wrinkle, i was using 10.4 when i made the sites. I am now running 10.5.2 (no point in installing an out of date OS if you are forced to do a fresh install).

How odd. Despite backup all of ~/Library and having a ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain file double clicking it gets me nothing.
so... looking back to an older (and sadly somewhat out of date) i found a Domain.sites2 file and stuck that in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb
    and that works....
    Somehow my Domain.sites got emptied.
I did indeed copy the right thing since i remembered that iWeb put the files in a non-obvious place yet somehow the Domain.sites i backed up was an empty one. I must have done something wrong before the back up, i know that i did update to iWeb '08 after making that site so maybe that blew away my old Domain.sites file or something... i dunno.
Well ... i guess it i did get version of this site back. I have to say i am not fond of how iWeb handles this all, this would be the second time i lost some work in iWeb due to a lack of understanding of how it works and where it stores things. It would be nice if us iWork, .mac folks could have a more robust and clear way of backing up, storing, retrieving, recreating our web sites. Considering that i am using .mac to host my site, and that i am using iWeb to make the site, you would think having all the code there you could hit a button to slurp the site back down to iWeb and have the web site itself serve as a back up. Also ... why can't it reconstruct based on the ~/Site folder?
Well i am back in biz... i will check and back up more carefully next time.

  • How do I redeem garageband/iMovie after a fresh install?

Just bought a macbook today and did a fresh mountain lion install. Just noticed that those apps are missing. How do I get them?

Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • DBus service error after a fresh install

    Hi!
I have a freshly installed Archlinux system. The dbus-org service seems to be reporting an error and I am not sure
    $ systemctl status dbus-org
    dbus-org.service
Loaded: error (Reason: No such file or directory)
    Active: inactive (dead)
I am not seeing any side effects to this though. DBus has to be working since systemd is using it. I am also running Gnome 3 which also needs DBus to run.
Still, I'm curious if anybody has seen this and could help investigating the source of this error message.
    Thanks!

    murb wrote:
I think the service is called dbus. Try:
    $ systemctl status dbus
Wow ok. Dbus is working. I've been mislead in thinking dbus-org would be valid and though the "No such file or directory" error was coming out of dbus. It is actually systemctl telling me it can't find a file/service matching dbus-org.
    Thanks!

  • Why are my safari bookmarks still present after a fresh install?

I've just done a fresh install of osx to clean things up a little and I've just noticed that my bookmarks in safari are still saved. Is there a way of doing a fresh install with ALL of my personal data erased?
I believe I did it correctly by rebooting with "cmd" and "r" pressed, then erasing my hard drive with disk utility and then reinstalling OSX.

If you’re given the option to do so, don’t give the computer your iCloud account information or uncheck the box for Safari. If desired, you can later sign out of iCloud or turn the option off from the iCloud pane of System Preferences.

  • How to get back installed apps after a fresh install?

I would like to start a new installation, format Macintosh HD and reinstalling Snow Leopard. From that point carry on with Lion, Mountain Lion and, eventually but not sure, Mavericks. After the new install could be problems retriving all intalled apps from Applestore?
    Thanks

My imac started with Snow Leopard, then after Lion and Mountain Lion i accepted the upgrade to Mavericks and i didn't appreciate the new interface and usage of some apps, i.e. iMovie. Meanwhile, even before Mavericks, os was slowing down, but even if a bit annoying and unusual still accetable. Consider that i have installed a bunch of apps regularly purchased, mainly fom Applestore. No fancy gadgets. So, as i didn't like that much Mavericks decided to restore from Time Machine. Possibly was a mistake and now i have an enviroment i feel i can't manage. Today, for instance iDvd shut down in an unaspected way three times and then i decided to reinstall. Agree Mac is not Win and, in fact, never had such a problem, but now i need, say for my interior peace, to start from a clean situation. That's why my question, what about my actally installed apps?
    Thanks
