I reinstall a new Hard drive.  But I cannot open the DVD tray to install the OS?  All I get the the ? in the folder when the computer turns on?

    Hi copa1226:
Sometimes the best solutions are the manual ones.  There is a mechanical fail safe built in to these devices,  I have had to use this method several times myself, so ....
    .....   Try this:
    1) Power off your mac pro.
    2) With your finger, pull down the metal bezel on the affected drive.
    3) You should now see the front plastic bezel on the affected drive, it is usually black or grey.
    4) Look for a small pinhole somewhere on the front. It will have a very small diameter, about 0.5mm.
    5) Yes it's there, all cd/dvd drives have one!   Note: a small flashlight comes in handy here.
    6) Straighten out a standard paperclip for about 2 -3 inches.
    7) Insert the paperclip in the small hole and push, you will have some resistance, and then the drive tray will slowly push out about 0.5 inches or more.
    8) Grab the tray and pull it out !!
    9) You are done!
    10) If you do this gently you won't hurt the drive. Boot up and the tray should automatically slide back in. You are good to go.

  • Please help!!! Cannot run Windows Update in Win 7 Pro after changing new hard-drive. (X201s)

    Hi everyone,
I have been using my thinkpad x201s for more than one year by now. And recently I change a new and larger hard drive for my laptop. When I tried the thinkpad rescue and recovery disc on the new hard drive, everything works fine except that I cannot run Windows Updates after the installation was finished.  The recovery DVDs were burned directly from the original image stored in the computer when the first I received my laptop last year.
Every time when I try to run the Windows Update, it shows the following: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running, you may need to restart your computer."
I restarted my computer later but nothing changed. Can't run Windows Updates and can't even install IE9.
I then moved back to my old hard drive and everything is normal, no problem with Windows Updates. I also tried to create a back-up image by running win 7 Backups and Restore. Later when I changed back to the new drive and followed the instructions to restore my system from the image I created earlier in a USB drive, it worked except that still the system can't run Windows Updates program.
I'm now getting very confused and upset, is it something to do with the software copyright? It's been a week now and I tried to Google the similar problem but no solutions work here. All I want to do is moving my current system to the new hard drive so that I can continue to use my laptop but it just failed updating every time.
Could anyone kindly tell me what to do when changing hard drive in order to avoid the problem I'm dealing with? Sorry I'm not a pro type user and just want my laptop to work appropriately.
My warranty has already expired so I guess the Lenovo Technical Hotline wouldn't answer my questions anymore. Please help!! Much appreciated.
    Thanks so much in advance!!

I'm not sure this is the issue, but from your description, it seems as though all you have to do is activate the windows update service. If I were you, I'd search for "Services" in the start menu, open it and look for "Windows Update". Check in its properties that it is set to "Automatic (Delayed)", if it isn't, set it, and start the service, you should then be able to check for updates, be careful though that none of your other programs aren't stopping the service, usually these programs are there to "optimize your performance" or "boost your system",...
    Hope this helps.

  • I am not able to access old music after a new hard drive install.  Wants an old password and I'd

I am unable to sync music to iPad iPhone etc. from 27" iMac with anew hard drive install.  Wants an old really old apple I'd and PW that hasn't been in use. What to do?

    Hello DeedeeB6075,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you have some music that you purchased with an older Apple ID that you don't have access to because your new hard drive needs to be authorized. If you know what the Apple ID is, you can go to https://iforgot.apple.com/ to reset your password.
If you cannot remember the Apple ID, you can follow the steps in this article to find your Apple IDs, and then go to https://iforgot.apple.com/ to reset your password.

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • New hard drive does not get recognized by OS X server 10.6

Xserve disk utility does no see the new HD. It is not HD issue as I have tested drive in other carrier, switched drive in different bays, booted from Xserve 10.6 dvd and 10.6 Server image in our net boot. Drive is not seen by disk utility. Even put in an Apple original (Mac Pro) HD. We have verified that. memory, HDD carrier and HD Bay are not defective.

Thanks John for the reply. I tried different new hard drives as well as a HD from Mac Pro server.I did try drive in different bays. Other 2 drives in the Xserve are recognized in all bays.I even switced HD carrier. Nothing seems to work. I found the following notes in the Xserve manual. I could not fully understand that. May be you can help me understand this.
Xserve (Late 2006) includes three hard drive bays on the front panel. Hard drives come as
modules, known as Apple drive modules (ADMs), attached to carriers; they are removed from or
installed in the Xserve as a unit. ADMs have been available from Apple in various capacities for
all Xserve and Xserve RAID models, and in multiple interface types. Xserve G4 and Xserve RAID
use parallel ATA (PATA) ADMs, and Xserve G5 uses serial ATA (SATA) ADMs. Xserve (Late 2006) can
use SATA ADMs, and ADMs with a new, third interface type known as serial attached SCSI (SAS).
It is important to understand ADM forward compatibility and backward compatibility with older
Xserve models, since some combinations of ADM and Xserve or RAID work properly while other
combinations do not. The following table summarizes this compatibility.
Xserve G4 Xserve RAID Xserve G5 Xserve
    (Late 2006)
    Xserve (Early
    2008)

  • I recently installed a new hard drive and don't know how to install the software.

I recently installed a new hard drive and now when I turn it on, it just shows a blinking file with a question mark on it. What do I do now? How do I install the software if I can't get on the internet from my MacBook? Can the apple store do it for me?

Which operating system version did you have?
We also need to know which exact model Mac (almost always include this information when you post - saying MaBookPro is almost as bad as saying "Ford car" in terms of the variety of submodels) because some newer models can boot from the Internet.
OS X: About OS X Recovery - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 - "OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks include OS X Recovery. This feature includes all of the tools you need to reinstall OS X, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs."

  • Installed new Hard drive, but Mac OS X won't install

Hi, I posted earlier about installing a new hard drive in my G3 iBook, and well, I did that! After the installation, I put in the Mac OS X CD and opened up the disk utility from the CD, and sure enough the new hard drive was there. So I clicked on the hard drive icon, then clicked erase, and selected Mac OS X extended (journaled). After this was complete, I attempted to install the Mac OS, but it told me that it could not install Mac OS X on this drive! please help me.

Alas, I too have expirienced the same problem, and I have all your answers. Yes, DO use www.ifixit.com, the instalation looks difficult, bot is quite easy. Check eBay for some HDs, I got a brand new 40 gig one for $70. I had a problem installing the OS with the new one, so if it happens to you try this:
    1. Make sure you have the system restore disks.
( your restore disk (there are 4 of them,) shoud restore to mac OS 9 and you probably have a seprate X disk(s))
    2. Insert the OS X disk and boot up (manualy insert disk(paper clip))
    3. At the top there should be some buttons like the apple logo, file, etc.
under one of the menues there is a button either labled Services or disk utility
    4. Select the erase disk tab.
    5. erase your (empty!) HD.
    6. shut down
    7. manualy insert restore disk 1
    8. Boot up holding down the C key, and run system restore
    9. when that is done, boot up as OS 9
    10. Insert the Mac OS X disk
    10. restart whyle holding down the C key
    11. install X.
    hope it works!

  • Old hard drive crashed, cannot get iTunes to find files

    Hi,
Please help. Been working on this for weeks and can't get it right. Am at my wit's end:
Old hard drive crashed; had new one installed. Tech person was able to find my iTunes on old drive and saved to thumbdrive. Downloaded most recent software and synced iPod - it "read" some of what was on it but would not play anything. tried to consolidate libraries/import from thumbdrive, then could view my whole library, but when I try to play any song it says it cannot locate the original file - does not matter if i purchased it from iTunes or added from CD. This computer is authorized, I've tried all the other "tutorials," added files (didn't work), tried using my iPod to xfer music to new computer - didn't work. I have my old hard drive booted and ready to go, can see the files and have copied them direct from drive to drive, still didn't work (followed the directions to keep music folder organized, etc.) What am I doing wrong?? I can't use my iTunes at all - just downloaded three new songs and that's all I can play from it. iPod itself seems unaffected.
    Thanks!! - [email protected]

Hi, you said you still have access to your old hard drive.
Can you move the entire itunes folder from the old to the new?
Not just the 'itunes music' folder - you need the parent folder of that.
It has an important file named itunes library.itl that holds ratings, play counts and the paths to your music files.
Copy that entire itunes folder and all its subfolders over to the new PC.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes and choose the ITL file you just copied over.

  • New hard drive and cannot re-install Windows 7

    RE:  HP Pavillion DV7-4270us
             Windows 7 64-bit
4MB Ram   640 GB Hard Drive
After receiving the S.M.A.R.T. warning about possible hard drive failure soon, I installed a Seagate 500GB hard drive. Next I began the recovery process by using my rescue discs. All that went fine.
Then the screen stated that after the pc restarts it will load all software and drivers. It will turn off and on several times and this will be normal. Please do not shut down pc.
Now is where my problem began. It never loaded the software and drivers even after running for 7.5 hours. I new this was extreme.
I just noticed on this forum someone else had a similar issue. The reply said to be aware and not to install a smaller hard drive than you originally had.
I am assuming this is my problem also. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. I suppose I will install a 1TB hard drive, even though that is more than I will ever need.
    Thank you!

    Hi:
That could be the issue, or the recovery disks you made won't work--even on a 1 TB hard drive.
Rather than tossing money into a new HDD, if you can read the 25 character product key on the bottom of your notebook, you can make your own plain W7 x64 installation media, which will install on any size hard drive.
Here is how to do that...
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).  The SP1 Media Refresh files are the latest ISO files.
    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-Multiple-Languag...
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Before you try the above, see if making this CD patch works for the factory recovery disks.

  • New hard drive, can't get photos to load from "iTunes sync" back into aperture or iPhoto

My hard drive crashed while in for service. I had over 10,000 photos in aperture and they were not able to recover any of them. When I connected my iPhone 5 to iTunes, I see at the bar on the bottom that shows storage that there are 10,000+ photos but I can't get at them. I can see a few photos on my phone that did not sync to the new iPhoto so I know there is still something left on my phone too. How do I rescue my photos?

Good news- this is all so much simpler that you think. (I know because I too struggled with it for days.) It turns ou that you have to do NOTHING to set up streaming with 2.0. Once you have synced your computer, just leave your computer running and on your TV using ATV you will see whatever movies you have imported into iTunes in the movie menu even if you have not synced them. The only way that you can tell that they are not synced is that when you select them to play the streaming bar will appear briefly at the bottom of your TV screen to indicate that it is being synced. If you turn your computer off the movie that you have chosen would not even appear in the menu.
Hope this helps- it is too bad apple doesn't give more info about using ATV!
