After an Archive Install?!

Hi There,
I recently completed an Archive Re-install of OS X 10.4 due to problems I was having with Itunes.
I was just wandering...can I trash the Old System Folder that the re-install created?
Cheers

Hi
If your system is fine, and you've got things out of Previous System Folder that you need, then you can trash it.

  • How to restore preferences on iTunes after an archive & install

    Hi,
My main HD had some critical problems that needed to be fixed and overcome using Disk Warrior. After that my OS was non-functional, so I proceeded to do an archive & install. Now upon using iTunes, I've always had my iTunes library on a separate HD because of the many thousands of mp3s I have. Now the problem is that with the archive and install I have lost all my star ratings for ALL my tracks plus I've also lost the many, many playlists I created in the past. I made everything according to my preferences over a good number of years and CANNOT face going through it again!
Is there a .plist file I can salvage from my old system folder that will update my new copy of iTunes?
Please help I'm pretty desperate here :-P

I actually found it out going along on my own actually. What I did was make iTunes load with the library from my previous system iTunes folder which for some reason wasn't present on my master HDD. Everything was back to normal like it should be with ratings, settings and all intact \o/
I actually never bothered looking, but now I realized that iTunes ALWAYS has to make its folders under /Users/xyz user/Music regardless of where the mp3s are stored. I actually didn't realize that the library settings were stored on the master HDD separate to where the mp3s were stored, which was on the slave HDD. Does anyone know why iTunes doesn't just keep all the information together, or migrate that information according to where you want the source of the iTunes library to be?
Thanks to all who replied to my message, I'm so relieved that it has all been rectified and the unnecessary hassle been thrown out the window!

  • Missing themes after and archive/install

After performing an archive/install I can open iDVD, but there are no themes available and the imovie I'm moving over does not play, it's just black. Can anyone can tell me where the themes are stored and if I can access them again?

The iDVD themes will be stored in Library/Applications Support/iDVD/Themes. See if they are in there. Assuming that they are, try closing iDVD and then trashing the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist. iDVD will create a new .plist file on relaunch. Before relaunching, do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac.

  • QTPro shows reg# but not enabled after archive install

I bought QT Pro when it was 7.0.3 & Pro features worked fine. Then I recently 'archive & installed' my OSX to fix other bugs. Now QT doesn't launch as Pro, even though my 7.0.3 registration # does come up in the registration section. I have not upgraded QT since then, not going to re-buy Pro over and over, and can confirm that it is still 7.0.3 I'm running. Any ideas? Please help.

I think I figured it out. My ATI 9600Pro video card was missing some drivers after the archive/install. I read somewhere that archive/install doesn't necessarily archive eeeeverything.
Anyway, when I launched the ATI monitor program (on a lark) it said 'yo, I'm missing a few things, load up that DVD driver disk again." So I did and badabing, problem appears to have been solved.
QT still doesn't technically SAY it's pro still, but all the features are still there. So that's still a little wierd, but probably a different issue.
So thanks all for the efforts. Hopefully this'll help someone else someday.

  • HDV codec missing after Archive & Install?

I use FC Studio (FCP 5.0.4), QT 7.2
Last Thursday I began importing HDV for a project from a Sony HDR FX-1E (HDV 1080i) with all the capture settings set properly. Capture results were fine.
Yesterday I had to Archive and install Tiger due to some severe font issues which were affecting the performance of the machine.
Today it seems some of QT's HDV codecs have gone missing, even with the software updated and running. I can open the clips in QT and hear sound, but no picture, only white screen. I can't set sequences properly in FCP either. It tells me a codec is missing and it sets the QT compressor automatically to "animation".
Is there any way to solve this? Do I have to reinstall FCP? I am already seeing my monday morning deadline slipping away! If anyone can offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

*Do I have to reinstall FCP*
Yes, you do... After an archive & install quicktime is reinstalled in its standard configuration... The HDV codec is ususally installed by FCP...

  • Can you fix this flaw with archive & install?

Any ideas what might be causing this alert after an Archive & Install? >
    "Application Launch Failure"
The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
    "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor>HotSyncLib.PPC>"
It appears after login as the menu bar loads, yet everything seems to be working perfectly - so far.
Any ideas what might be causing it - and how to fix it, other than just clicking 'OK' to get rid of the alert?

Reinstall Palm Desktop if you use it, or remove the Transport Monitor from the list of login items for your account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences if you don't.

  • Archive & Install issues

    All,
For the past week, I've been struggling mightily with Leopard to get it to run smoothly after upgrading from Tiger. After I upgraded, my computer ran slow (the dreaded spinning wheel), I got a blue screen for some time before the OS loaded, and a variety of other issues with programs and some installers. When I clicked on Macintosh HD, it could take upwards of 2-3 minutes for the computer to think through the process of simply opening a folder.
It got to the point where I even upgraded from 1 GB of RAM to 2 GB's, just to see if that would make a difference. It didn't (sigh). I also ran Disk Warrior on 10.5.1, which is not recommended yet, because they haven't put out an update. However, after doing that, I fixed my permissions with Disk Utility as well. So we got back to the original settings anyway.
I tried to revert back to Tiger, but when that didn't work, I simply just erased the drive and installed a clean copy of Leopard (after backing up my files, of course).
I'm happy to report that after a clean install, Leopard is now running incredibly smoothly on my Intel MacBook Pro with 2Ghz and 2GB RAM. So much so, in fact, that I can't believe I had the problems I was having.
So, my advice to anyone who is having problems going from Tiger to Leopard after and Archive & Install is: just back-up and install a clean copy of Leopard. The biggest problem with this is that you'll lose your applications, so you'd better make sure you have the passwords and either the original CD or the installer for a program as a backup on your external drive.
Hope my expereince helps someone to make a decision.

I think everyone would agree that a "fresh" installation will run much better than a hashed upgrade. There are a lot of reasons an upgraded system might not perform properly, from incompatible apps and/or drivers, corrupted prefs files, RAM and hardware issues, etc. Most if not all of these are circumvented when you erase your HD and install the OS "from scratch". Since this is a major upgrade and not a "periodic update" many feel it is better install a "clean" OS rather than attempt to upgrade an existing previous version. On the other hand, many have upgraded without issue. In any case, it's nice that you got your system running the way it should.

  • Time Machine no longer backs up after archive & install

I have just had something mysterious happen to my Macbook - it spontaneously shut down, then wouldn't restart past a gray screen with Apple logo. After trying every troubleshooting page I could find, I ended up doing an archive and (re)install of Leopard on my hard drive. (btw, I ran the Disk Utility hard drive diagnostic, and it said the HD is fine, though I'm skeptical because it's making new noises I've never heard before.)
I finished that install, restarted, everything seemed fine, and I re-connected the external hard drive that had been used for my Time Machine backups before. Now, every time it attempts to back up, it's stuck on "preparing" for 30 minutes, then starts copying SLOWLY and the progress bar says "6 KB of 10 GB." Well, I have a lot more than 10 GB to back up. Then the process halts and I get an error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." And I can't get any more specific information about the error - can't find a log file or anything.
I know that there's a troubleshooting article about Time Machine issues with only backing up 10 GB, but mine doesn't even get that far, and besides, this is not my first Time Machine backup - I have no other external drive big enough to transfer my older data to while I reformat this drive as the support article suggests.
I was thinking that perhaps a system setting got messed up somehow and that maybe I should just forget this archive & install thing I did and instead do a fresh erase & install on my Macbook hard drive and then restore from Time Machine's old backup (a day or so before my Macbook started acting weird). But 1. would that make a difference? And 2. if Leopard gives me an error while backing up in Time Machine, what if I do the erase & install and I get an error trying to restore from Time Machine? That would be a nightmare.
My Macbook has always been so reliable - I'm very confused about what's going on! Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm; the external drive had no errors, according to Disk Utility.
Here are the time machine logs from Console:

  • IPhoto 7.1.1. not launching after an archive and install of OSX 10.4

    Dear everybody,
after some bad hassles with kernel panics on start up I had to do an archive & install as a last resort.
Turned out to be pretty easy and worked fine - as recommended I started trying all 3rd party hard-ware, but instead of that IPHOTO (fully updated) seems to have troubles launching. It shows up for a second in the dock jumping, then vanisches again. Command-option-clicking doesn't open it, either.
Should I uninstall/drag to trash my iPhoto application and do a customized re-install from DVD?
Will this affect the iPhotoLibrary file that is containing all my pictures? Furthermore, will re-installing cause any changes in my preferences?
Can I do a reinstall by dragging an older version/update onto the newest?
    Thanks for any help!
BTW, I did update 10.4. to 10.4.11 before trying to launch iPhoto.
    Cheers!
    Keywan

    Dear Terence,
    I followed your guide:
-Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime.
    Ensured
-1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    Minor issue - repaired.
-2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
Don't have that file! Only a com.apple.iLife08.plist in theat directory. I did not delete it, otherwise other iLife apps are also troubled.
-3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
Did that - still no launching of iPhoto.
-If none of those work, Post the Crash Log.
    No crash log present.
    More ideas?
I'll try the next answer now.

  • How do I get my addresses back after an Archive and Install procedure?

I recently had to archive and install because something was really wrong with my desktop. Now the desktop works fine but how do I get my address book application to open with all my former data in it? The address book application opens but there is NOTHING in it except apple's card and my user card? What I am asking is how to restore all my data after an archive and install procedure. Thank you in advance!

    whatrulookinat wrote:
Yes I archived and installed with the disk that came with my MBP and then reinstalled snow leopard and then did software upgrades....
you shouldn't have done that. if you wanted to reinstall snow leopard (why btw?) you should have just reinstalled it over the existing snow leopard installation directly. installing an older OS version over the newer one ( like leopard over snow) is not recommended by apple and can lead to problems. it also does not let you preserve users. your old home directory should be located inside the Previous system folder. see this link on how to extract your data from it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2196
specifically, for the address book you need to copy the folder homedirectory/library/application support/address book from the archived home directory to the corresponding location on the new one.

  • Blank File Info panel after osx archive and install (CS5)

    Hi,
After osx archive and install I get a blank File Info panel (into AI, PS, ID and other CS5 applications), how could be solved this??
    Best regards, Robert

    Hi,
solved by full remove/install CS5.. but how could be restored correct access rights?
    Also replied me Vikas.Sharma:
Create a new text file named XMP.cfg (make sure the extension is cfg and not txt).
The only text that needs to be in that file is as below:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/
Restart the Adobe application and check the File Info panel again.
You need to copy that file to /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/FlashPlayerTrust (create the directory if not already there)
but, why osx archive and install isnt working fine with flash?
The only troubles (solved) are quicklook flv contents and XMP file info panes into all CS5 applications, could be solved next time by a short and fast procedure?
    Best regards, Robert

  • Stack Underflow and Archive Install fail after 10.4.9 upgrade

After performing the 10.4.9 upgrade on my Black MacBook Core Duo, each of the Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Entourage, Power Point, and Office Updater and Office Installer) all abort on activation. The System Log indicates a stack underflow:
Mar 24 11:36:38 Arakis /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Microsoft Word: CGGStackRestore: gstack underflow.
Attempts to reinstall office fail. Drag and Drop method and Using Office Installer App both fail. The Installer App also aborts with the same error.
After speaking with Microsoft Support and trying their suggestions for removing prefrence files and MS user directory, all fail with the same results. Last Microsoft reccomendation is to perform Archive and Install, and upgrade only to 10.4.8 using combo update.
So I Cloned my boot disk before performing Archive and Install (and it's a good thing too).
I started the Archive and install, and all went well until disk 2, specifically while it was installing iLife demo. When it said two minutes remaining, it froze. Last log entry indicates "specified processes cannot be found". I left it to continue overnight (about 8 hours). It was in the same state in the morning. So I forced a Power down and restarted. It requested disk 1 and began the Archive and Install again, with the same results.
I was able to boot off my external clone and restore my boot disk. I am now back to 10.4.9, and Office apps still abort with stack underflow.
One other point. I have a G4 iMac, A Dual G5 Power Mac, and a G5 Mac Mini, all with 10.4.9 and MS Office, and they all work fine. Problem only seems to be on DualCore MacBook, and only Microsoft Office Apps. MS messenger and MS Remote Desktop Client for MAC work. All other apps (apple and 3rd party) also work OK.
One last thing. After 10.4.9 upgrade, Finder quite often crashes when right clicking or Cotrol-clicking on files or folders in finder windows. Looking at crash dump indicates that this is an unrelated issue, which I will address later, in another rpost.
Are there any suggestions on how to sucessfully perform an archive and Install? Is it possible to disable the install of optional software like iLife demo? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Jeff Cameron
DualCore MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

After spending a bit of time, researching this problem, it seems I have been bit by the dyldupdateprebinding bug while updating to 10.4.9. This is outlined in the article located at:
    http://www.unsanity.org/archives/macos_x/shock_andawe.php
However I am still unable to repair my problem by performing an Archive and install (possibly because of the dyldupdateprebinding). So if anyone can help me do the Archive & install without installing the iLife demo, or any of the optional software, I would be most appreciative.
    Jeff

  • Reset Mail & Address Book prefs back after Archive & Install

Please let me know what files I need to move around to get back my old mail files & address book. Also some of my programs won't start. They say they are missing files. What do I do?

Okay, here is the whole story with this:
I left on vacation & came back 7 days later. As I booted & began to try to download my vacation pics from my camera, it seemed really slow, so I had to force shut down. When I tried to reboot, it doesn't get past the gray screen with the apple & progress indicator. It just spins & spins but goes nowhere. I have seen where people have posted that they came back after a couple hours & their computer was working. No luck here, I left it on all day while I was at a work, & it was still stalled at the same spot when I came home. Below are the things I have tried:
    1. DiskWarrior. (I can get it to boot from the CD using the C command on startup.) It ran through replacing the directory. Found a bunch of errors but fixed them. Shows the hard drive is fine. After rebooting & the computer still stalling, I tried DiskWarrior again but it showed nothing wrong.
    2. Tried zapping PRAM & NVRAM. No luck.
    3. Disk Utility. I ran disk utility. It found no disk errors. Tried again, still stalls.
    4. Tried holding down shift key to start in safe mode, but it does nothing at all.
    5. I did a search on Apple.com & found where it said to find the file BaseSystem.pkg & get it into /Library/Receipts. Replaed the file with the one from the Tiger install CD. Still stalls.
    6. Decided to just go do an Archive & Install to replace the old system, but it won't let me. Says I have a newer version & have to do a clean install. This would cause me to loose a bunch of important files that I haven't backed up lately (I know! I know! I'm bad!!!). Freaked a bit.... It would take me forever to burn cds of all my files...
    7. OS 9. So I thought I would try to startup in OS 9.2, & that works. So I am assuming that it is an issue with OS X Tiger.
    8. I also tried to boot up without anything plugged in but the keyboard & mouse. Still stalled.
    9. I also tried repairing the permissions using Disk Utility from the Tiger CD, but it gave me an error "No Valid Packages".
    10. Also, I also held down Command V & this is the jabberwacky that come up:

Kept trying and trying & got it to let me verify/repair the permissions. Then I verify/repair the disk. Everything was fine. I was able to back up all my document files in OS9. But I still had them because the I did the archive & install. But the inbox for my mail, along with my address book (& some other stuff I am sure I will miss soon) I would like to get back to normal. Please let me know if this is possible.

  • Password Rejected after Archive Install

Recently, I messed up my mac while playing round with system theme settings, so after browsing the net for a bit I found the only option to be an Archive Install, as I didn't want to lose my data. Once this had finished, all seemed to be fine. The login screen came up with my icon, and it took me to the password screen. All normal. Then I tried entering my password, and it was rejected.
So I'm currently locked out of my repaired computer. Any solutions or links, please post! I've seen several instances of problems when upgrading to leopard from early versions of OSX, but none of when it's been simply reinstalled to fix errors.

What can cause voice chat to stop working? Is there some vc plugin in library that needs to be there, which has disappearted after my "archive and install'? Please advise. thanks Fahd
