After Authorized Service Provider my Mac went back in time and I lost everything!

Yesterday my screen started showing weird horizontal lines, so I took it to an Apple ASP for a quick look.
First I created a new Admin account to protect my existing admin account. The guy would be using this one throughout his diagnostic.
The guy opened the back of the notebook, tweaked the cable connecting the screen and the logicboard, and turned the notebook back on.
After that he said he would perform a quick analysis/diagnostic that all ASPs do upon starting a service. The diagnostic showed that my battery needs to be serviced, everything else was fine.
His conclusion was that the screen needs to be changed as the cable cannot be changed without the screen. I got the notebook back, and he recommended I buy a new used computer, as servicing both the battery and the screen would cost at least 700-800USD in itself.
-> So fine, I take the computer back home, and turn it on. I log into my own personal admin account, not the one I had created for the guy.
Result:
* My notebook has jumped back in time: applications and files are missing; settings are odd; and worst of all......
* my Safari no longer opens: it says
Safari cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
Background:
Last fall I had the same issue: I had upgraded my Snow Leopard to Lion in 2011, and later to Mountain Lion last fall 2012. After doing so, my Safari no longer opened, saying the same as above. Without Safari I could not update anything, as to use App Store one needs Safari as a background software.
So I needed to do a clean install of my Lion and my Mountain Lion, and I did so while partitioning my harddrives to two partitions.
Now:
I seem to be back in time, re-experiencing what happened last fall. Meanwhile I have lost everything I had on before taking the notebook to the service: I lost my Safari, its settings and open browsers, but I also lost a whole bunch of other features, apps, etc.
I tried returning to a restore point in my Time Machine - no difference. The issue with Safari persists.
I don't want to do another clean install, it took a lot of effort and would require me to invest in a new external harddrive of 2TB. If there is a way to restore Safari without a clean install, I would prefer it.
Please help! Much appreciated.

Dear ds store, thank you for replying. If I may clarify, I am not looking assistance on the screen or battery issue, it was just to give the background as to why I had to take the notebook to an ASP and why the guy had to do a diagnostic with the notebook.
The problem is with Safari not opening, and with my OS X going 'back in time' to a restore point where my earlier problem with Safari occurred. I don't understand what the guy did to reverse my OS X to a distant point back in time in last November, and why my Safari problem reappeared even though I had done a clean install to fix it.
Thank you!

If I buy a Mac and iPad online, will I still be able to claim warranty at an Apple Authorized Service Provider?
I am going to buy a Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display and iPad from www.topbuy.com.au . It's a legit website, but they say the items have topbuy warranties, not apple ones. They say I have to send off my faulty device to them, and they will fix it, but I don't want to do that. I just want to walk into an Apple store, tell them the problem and have a happy ending, like what's supposed to happen. Will I be able to do this?
    Thanks

Apple warranty is good at any Apple service provider, AASP or store.
But you seem to be reaching far to defend that "it's a legit website", especially when they seem to be directing you from seeking certified Apple service.
As the saying goes: If it looks like a duck, and it sound like a duck, it's quackers to bypass an Apple store or Apple online to save a few $$.  Well, something like that.

  • Authorized service provider non-delivery after the dead-line

My ipod touch had no audio at phone input and there was times that it didnt charge, so I sent it to assistance to repair. They said since it was sealed it dont get repaired in an authorized provider, so Apple will give me new one. The gave me a 30 days due for my device to arrive, but it has past 40 days already and they dont even know when it could happen. Do Apple have an email or other contact to cases like that?

What does the Apple Authorized Service Provider say?
    To contact Apple see:

  • Reporting Authorized Service Provider

Does anyone knows if there´s a place were I can report a bad Authorized Service Provider?
Apple´s official service it's supposed to be the best, but this happened to me yesterday:
I bought a new iMac Intel, 20". After a couple of months of use, the finder began to react a little slow, so I restarted from my CD.
The CD doesn´t works. My mac can´t boot from CD, so I went to the Apple Authorized Service Provider where I initially bought the computer.
The initial diagnostic was that someone swichted the CD, so I have a different one, but no the appropiate for this iMac. Anyway, they told me the computer must be in observation for a couple of days to check the internal CD unit. Then they gave me a receipt.
To my amusement, the receipt said it was a "G5 iMac" model, with scratches on it's surface and it's original install CD's. Then I protested for two reasons: the computer it's supposed to be brand new, no scratches at all were visible anywere. The second one it was 'cause it was an Intel mac, not a G5. But they insisted the computer's processor's was really a G5. This discussion lasted for about ten minutes. The final settlement it was that the computer will be registered as an "early 2006 model", with no mention at all of the type of processors or memory, but they insisted that the receipt should contain "tiny scratches" anyway, or won't be repaired.
When I protested, they told me they don't have any obligation to repair a computer without serial number. I didn't know anything about this, but they told me all iMacs have a little plaque at the bottom of it's base with their serial number. Mine didn't have any, and no signs of damage of scratches in this place, just a little squared empty space. They told me this serial number should match the one registered in the original invoice, the one I received when the original purchase was done.
And guess what? No serial number was in the invoice too!!!! When I proved to them that they sell me the computer with no serial number at all, I told 'em I will call consumer;s protection bureau and Apple, and then the discussion inmediately ended. They take the computer to service, with just one minor detail: initially they give me the receipt to accept the service in which they described what I gave to them, with no mention of any peripherals at all. After a couple of words, they included the original cables, keyboard and mouse in the list.
Just one last thing: The phones which appear printed in the original invoice does not exists. Their real phone number it's quite different.
In resumen: If the computer is new, can the Install CD's be switched? It's true that G5 it's the same as Intel core duo? Can an Authorized Apple Provider sell a computer without serial number?
So, if this is what you can expect from an Authorized Service Provider, can you imagine what can you expect from anyone else?
This post was deleted with no further explanations from this forums, so I inmediately spread it across the net. The mail version contains all information, adress and phone number of the Authorized Service Provider, pictures, and all appropiate information to identify him. It's now on a blog and copies were sent to news services.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Victor,
No, an Intel Core Duo iMac is not the same as an iMac G5. However, the iMac G5 (Early 2006) and the Intel iMac are virtually identical to eachother. The way to tell them apart is to look at the bottom of the foot or to turn the computer on, click on the Apple logo and choose "About this Mac". Also, the original disks that came with these units are very different and wouldn't work with eachother.
I would recommend that you call Apple directly at 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273) to let them know about your experience and also to request new disks if you qualify. They should be able to answer most of your questions.
    I hope this helps ya,
    Derek C.

  • The authorized service provider send me home with an exploding machine

I wish the Apple shop over here in Hong Kong opened earlier. I had to deal with the "Authorized" service provider WahFung to try fixing my MBA. Then I was send home with the MBA "repaired" but turned out to have a potential of exploding!
Here is what happened. My MBA had a power failure and needed a board replacement costing me over $400US at this WahFung service provider in Hong Kong. They "fixed" it by showing me that the little light on the MagSafe connecter lights up and rushed me to sign the receipt and send me home. After taking it home, I found that the whole keyboard was lifted up and the MBA doesn't even close properly! So I took it back to WahFung and ask them why. They said the battery has swollen up and you shouldn't turn on the machine as it might explode! I mean WHAT? so you send me home strapped with a bomb? Ok fine, then fix it up. They said no, you signed for it already and it is not our fault! OK, so thanks I paid $400 for you to mess up my machine and put me in risk. The only thing they said they would do is to contact Apple and see if Apple would replace the battery. (Fine I did hear about there is a replacement service for batteries of this problem of the same age machines) Now it has been about 8 weeks, no one is giving me any feedback. I don't even know if they did contact Apple. They still have the machine.
Has anybody had similar problems on the service and/or the battery of the MBA?
Now the Hong Kong Consumer Councel has also contact them and will bring them to court if we cannot settle. That will get me into a lot of time and money commitment having already spent over $400 dollars and hrs of waiting for them to pick up the phone. I have been a long time loyal user of Apple's product since the first Macintosh. Please please don't let these non-Apple people ruin you. If we do lose the court case, there will be media covering the story, I don't want Apple to get involved.
Steve, I wish you were here, what would you have done?

Is the news really that slow in your country that the news would broadcast a story about one persons negative experience with Apple?
Steve, I wish you were here, what would you have done?
Don't ask a rhetorical question towards the recently deceased co-founder of Apple, it is insensitive.  Tim Cook is the new CEO, he replaced Steve Jobs before his passing.  Feel free to mention his name from now on.
With that said, I hope you recieve a favorable outcome.

  • Ordering parts through an AppleCare authorized service provider?

My MacBook Pro has been freezing several times per hour for the last few weeks. I called Apple and they confirmed the hard drive is failing and needs replacement. Since I have AppleCare through mid-2012 but am currently traveling abroad, they recommended an authorized service provider in Thailand for me to take my MBP to for repair.
However, the place they sent me to wanted to either:
    1) keep my MBP for up to a week while they ordered / waited for the new part (note they didn't actually need the laptop to do anything during this time, they said it was for "insurance" that I wouldn't not come back),
    or
    2) charge me almost $200 for a deposit that would be refunded when I returned after the part came in (note that this is more than the actual hard drive is even worth).
Both of these options seemed unacceptable to me -- I work from the road so I need my laptop (it's not completely unusable yet), and I shouldn't need to pay anything since this is covered by AppleCare. I repeatedly asked if they could order the part and call me when it came in (and I would bring the laptop in same day for them), but they refused to do this without a deposit.
Is this the standard policy or is this provider trying to rip me off?

Call AppleCare and explain what happened.

after power interruption -all my folders went back with 3 years dates, How do i return lost files?

    Malachi1234 wrote:

    On what exactly? Your computer?
Do you have a backup off the machine that's stable?
Now your files are still likely there, it's just a naming issue or a PRAM/SMC problem for power and a cache corruption issue for the files.
If you don't have a backup of your files, copy everything you can to a external storage drive and disconnect it.
Next run trhough this list of fixes, I suspect the SMC/PRAM reset will help with the power issues and the #12 OnyX cache cleaning routine will set your folders right.
Remmeber after the PRAM reset to set your time and date correctly. Pehaps that is what s throwing off the date on the folders?
It's really hard to figure your problem out with the information provided.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
Again your files are likely very much still on the drive, you can recvoer anything as long as it hasn't be secure erased or overwritten by new data yet

  • Should an Apple Authorized Service Provider ask for my personal login password?

I sent my Macbook Pro to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) because the computer wasn't turning on. While I was giving my information they asked for my login password in order to be able to install some diagnostic software. I didn't want to gave my personal password because with that you can get passwords that are stored in Keychain.
They say that they needed so I ended up trusting them, but does Apple allow  AASP to ask for personal passwords?

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

I have been trying to download Adobe Air for a website I'm trying to access (Colonial Williamsburg). After the installation was finished, I went back to the website and it still said I didn't have Adobe Air. I tried reinstalling and Adobe said I already have it on my system (Mac OSX 10.9). I can't find the app. I uninstalled, restarted, etc. and same results.
    Thoughts anyone?

I have not read all you wrote, so I may have missed some points. As I understand it, you installed FP 10 on IE7, but it won't play any Flash content?
    Try this
download the FP uninstaller from http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157
close all browser windows, then run the uninstaller
download the offline ActivX installer for Internet Explorer from http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

  • My battery went dead and I had to plug it in. after several hours I went back to it and it is has an icon that is saying plug in and itunes.  It won't do anything else- nothing. I can't turn it off or or on and I have no access to my phone.

my battery went dead- I plugged in it.  several hours later I went back to it and it wasn't on. instead the only thing on the screen was a picture of the plug in and the icon itunes on top of it.  I have no idea what that means.  My phone will not turn on even after I hold both buttons. i was told a while back that the i7 program can mess this up and to hold both buttons down to reboot the phone.  I tried this but even this isn't working.  Any ideas?

Yes, my telco is an approved carrier. If my phone was brand new, I think so, they opened it in front of me.. I really couldn't remember it was 1.4 years ago. It did seem new.
Well it says, "_____" cannot be used to unlock this iphone. I've tried both my apple ids but it didn't work.
