After awakening from standby the whole system becomes awfully slow

When I wake up my system from standby the system is very slow. It seems that it pauses once every second. Even the activity monitor responds that way but doesn't show any further information. Only a reboot of the system helps.
Any idea to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance
Wolfgang

Hello,
I installed update 10.7.1 and the system is still very slow after waking up from standby mode. It seems it does get even slower after another standby period... Restarting still helps - the system is then back to normal and running well.
What I experienced yesterday is that iTunes has little glitches in the audio output, when I do memory/HD/CPU intensive things like browsing my Aperture image library back and forth. But CPU utilization is not at 100% for both cores. Those glitches are audible after fresh restart of the Mac and are much longer and ugly after waking it up.
I have an early iMac 24" with 2,8gig and 4 GB of RAM.
Looks like we'll have to wait for 10.7.2 after all?
Wolfgang, has your problem been resolved with 10.7.1?
Regards,
Alex

My external HD of 1TB is not being recognized by the iMac and when after a long waiting period it does, the whole computer becomes extremely slow. Do I need any particular add-on to make it workable?
Before I updated to OS X Mavericks I was using another external disk that was getting disconnected ocasionally so I bought a new ADATA HD710 portable 1TB Drive and moved the files to it. This new drive which is supposed to be OS X Mavericks compatible takes minutes to show the files especially when opening second and third level folders which has made mu iMac unusable
    What should I do?

Your Mac should be able to recognize many different types of drives (including Windows-formatted drives) immediately for Reading, provided they are in good working condition and not damaged. There should be no need to transfer to a different type of drive.
If there is no recognition of this drive, see if it can be seen in Disk Utility.
If your aim is to transfer the data on it DO NOT use ERASE or PARTITION as these will completely erase all the information on the Drive.
If the drive is present while the Mac sleeps, it is likely to drop out and not be seen any longer, especially if it is a USB-powered drive.

  • When Lion awakes from Sleep the whole system is sluggish? Must restart computer to get it back up to speed.

Upgraded to Lion and when the computer wakes from sleep it is incredibly sluggish.  Takes 1-2 minutes to switch between applications, typing is very slow, etc. Only thing that cures it is restarting the Mac.  Is this something others have experienced and can it be fixed?

I have that problem on my Mac mini.  The mini becomes so dysfunctional as to be unusable after it's been idle for a while.  Even DVDs won't mount (or eject) without a reboot.  <edited by host>.  It's disgraceful.  Apple should be ashamed of this Lion release, it clearly isn't ready.
I don't think there is anything you can do short of re-installing Snow Leopard until Apple releases enough bug-fix updates to fix the Lion mess.  In the mean time, just hope that Lion doesn't eat your Mac, especially if it's a mini.

    Hello again @RobertMB2,
Thank you for the update on your situation. I think you need to rule out 3rd party software as being an issue. To do this I want you to follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Configuration (Windows 7), to disable ALL non-Microsoft services and all Start-up items. If the issue is resolved after doing this we know that it is a 3rd party application and can take steps to identify it.
To identify which application is causing the problem I want you to re-activate 50% of the services you disabled earlier. If the issue is still resolved you know that the 50% you just activated are not the problem. Re-activate the next 50%. Again if the issue is still resolved the services are not the problem and we can do the same to the Start-up items. If however the problem does return de-activate 50% of the last items you just re-activated and continue in this manner until you identify what the problem application/service is.
Please re-post if you require additional support or with the guilty item once you find it if you require assistance with it.
Thank you again for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

You can always shut it down manually via the Task Manager
    (CtrlShiftEsc)...

  • Power manager crashes after returning from standby mode.

I have a T400 2767 WU6 running Windows 7 Pro-64bit.. After returning from standby mode, power manager crashes (version 3). All the software installed is supposed to be compatible with win7 pro 64bit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does this issue appear from the beginning?
Possibly the OS was installed several time ago and now the registry entries are corrupt.
Therefore the system busy egg timer could appear.
Im not 100% sure it will help but possibly you should reinstall the whole OS
On the fresh installed OS all should works much faster

  • USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature.  I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager.  Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site.  At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes".  Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
    - (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues.  The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS.  However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

  • Mouse stutter and UI unresponsiveness after returning from standby

Hi guys, after upgrading to Leopard the mouse pointer on my 15" MBP stutters after returning from standby. Weird thing is that this happens only after it was in standby for awhile, maybe 5 to 10 minutes. If I return from standby after a few seconds the stutter does not happen. I can only resolve this with a restart. This did not happen in Tiger. Is there anyone else experiencing this?

Well I had this problem. Did a fresh install of Leopard a week and a bit ago and it seemed to run much better. Set my machine up how I like it and it's back to how it was. I didn't setup my Dashboard right away so maybe your onto something. I'll have to try and force myself to not use it for a bit and see how it goes.
We should collect a list of 3rd party widgets as I think initially with the default 4 on display it was fine.
I've only got 4 other than the standard Apple supplied ones.
    - iStat Pro 4.2
    - TV Forecast 2.3
    - Amazon Album Art 2.12
    - Application Update 1.5.8
Now both iStat Pro and TV Forecast claim to be Leopard compatible. Amazon Album Art also mentions improved Leopard support was added in version 2.11. Application Update doesn't claim to be but seems to work fine. However I think this was the last widget I added and a few days after the others. I think it was fine with the other three so I might try removing it and seeing what happens.
Still I'd love to know what other Widgets you guys have. Maybe we all have the a similar one which we can narrow down to being the cause. Or maybe it's not 3rd party widgets at all but the Dashboard as a whole. Still I'm more likely to think it's a 3rd party widget.

  • Time machine on Lion crashes the whole system when used with external HD

    Hi all,
Anybody got the same problem? I did a Time Machine backup just before I did the upgrade to Lion (using an external USB HDD) after the upgrade (that went well in my opinion) when I ask TM to do another backup it stays on "Preparing" indefenately and ultimately crashes the whole system ( reset with ctrl+cmd+power button) is required otherwhise the system stays non reactive.
    Regards,
    Iwan

Start by verifying your internal HD, and repair your backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a possible way to cancel the backup.  If that works, use the widget in #A1 there to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Installing x11 without installing the whole system?

I did not install x11 when I installed Tiger on my Mac G5. I have now, via a number of updates, moved to version 10.4.10.
Sadly, when I insert my system install disk it will not let me install x11 without installing the whole system. That is a risky and impractical situation at this point.
Is there a way to install x11 without installing a whole new system?

On the Installer Disc One there is an installer named 'Optional Installs.' You can install the X11 software from that package without reinstalling OS X.

  • To reinstall the whole system using the recovry cd

    Product: Notebook Toshiba tecra A4.
As the system files were corrupted i tried to recover the whole system. After inserting the recovery cd and copying the files i removed the cd and restart the computer. It comes up to the field where i have to give the computer a name. At this moment it freezes. No reaction at all. I reaptedly tried and waited each time up to 20 to 30 minutes. there is no responce at all. how can i fix this proble?

It is very strange because units and recovery procedure are tested before the units are delivered. If you didn?t change Hardware configuration and you se it without any external devices you should clarify this with your local dealer or with Toshiba authorized service partner directly. Call them and explain the situation.
I don?t know how old your unit is but if there is some serious problem the valid warranty will cover the repair costs.
Sorry pam but I am really out of idea.
Anyway good luck and if you find out what the problem is please let us know because your issue is really individual case on Tecra thread.

I was running Lightroom 3.6 with the OS Windows XP (Sp3). The whole system crashed, I am unable to recover the serial number. I then upgraded my OS to Windows 7 (x64) and down loaded Lightroom 4.4, I wanted to buy a licence so I then upgraded to Lightroom 5, now when I try to register I am asked for the original licence/serial number. Where do I go from here??????

If you upgraded from 3.6 to 5 (you didn't indicate buying 4.4) then you will need the serial number from 3.6 in order to be able to use 5.  If you did not keep a record of it there is a chance it might be available thru your Adobe account online, but if not, there is likely not much you can do except to return the upgrade and purchase a full version.  Try contacting support using chat and explain your situation to see if they can help.

If you did purchase 4.4 then that should be sufficient to use to activate 5.
I can never be sure what goes on with Lightroom, and the Adobe site (even when it works properly) makes finding information about products difficult these days so I am at a loss to confirm anything I say.

  • Windows 8 won't find any airport after resuming from standby

    Hi,
I have had a windows 7 PC with both airport express (2nd and 3rd generation) working flawlessly. I bought a new Windows 8 Laptop. Initially everything worked fine, but after resuming from standby mode (closed the display and reopened) my itunes stopped working, and the airport utility software was unable to find both airport express. After shutdown and restart they both worked again until the next standby mode.
I've read somewhere that it might be a conflict with IPv6 so I disabled it from registry, but the problem remains.....
    any thoughts

Did you upgrade the drivers from the wireless card manufacturer in win8 machine.. ??
If that doesn't work.. do some more basic wireless investigation..
    1. Are wireless names SMB compliant.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric?
    2. WPA2 Personal security with a password which also conforms to the above.
    3. Test with fixed wireless channels. 11, 6, 1
    4. If none of the above work.. turn off security for a few minutes and see if that works.
