After burning CD, won't play

After burning a CD on my Emac, it will not play on another device. I receive the "ding" letting me know that it burned OK. Am I missing a step after the "ding"? Am I burning incorrectly? Thanks for any help you can give.

awsmith,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can you provide a little more information? What kind of file(s) did you burn, and on what device are you trying to play the CD? Does the other device recognize the CD and fail to open the files, or is the CD not seen at all?
You may also want to try another blank CD, especially one from a different spindle or package of discs. Blank CDs can degrade over time, especially in less-than-ideal strorage conditions (see the NIST document Care and Handling of CDs and DVDs), and some brands and batches of blank discs are markedly less quality than others (while written in terms of DVD discs, the manufacturer rankings in Blank DVD Media Quality Guide are useful).

  • Burned CDs won't play after updating to 6.0

After updating to 6.0 and 6.01 the CDs I burn won't play in my car stereo. This was never a problem prior to the updates.
I double checked everything I could think of and am burning them to CD-Rs and have audio CD selected on my burning preferences. I have even tried using several different brands of CD and using a slower burning speed.
    Any ideas?

absolutely nothing. All the controls are normal. When i try to double click a track to play it just highlights the track. When i use the play button, it operates but no track plays. Even in purchased tracks it won't play! There are one or two tracks that will play normally but they are random ones. Have tried the suggestion that are recommended but with no success.

  • IDVD burned discs won't play on any dvd player

When I burn a dvd using Idvd they will not play on standard dvd players.
Is this a problem with anyone else?
I noticed it was a problem in the early 2000-2003 but apparently something got fixed, because I couldn't find an incident where this problem continued to occur.
I am new to the Mac world and I don't always understand the acronymns used when I read responses.  However, here is my problem.
    Burning dvd's using Idvd:
    1.  the burn seems to run and function normally
    2. when I insert the burned dvd into a dvd player one of the following things occur:
         a) loading takes a very long time, then I get a message saying "wrong disc"
          b) loading occurs fast, reads the file as a dvd, the dvd begins playing the music and showing the main menu screen, after accessing a menu option the dvd begins to play the slideshow with the music then after a minute or two, it freezes, and is no longer readable when attempting to reload it, the message is "wrong disc"
    3.  I've tried using dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd+r dual layer, and changing the burn speed to 8x, then to 4x and then to 2x.  Nothing seems to matter.
    4.  I have noticed that in Idvd the dvd type is for an older version of dvd's such as single layer 4.2 gb and double layer 7.7 gb. I'm wondering whether the Idvd software on my MacMini is up to date, even though when I check for updates under the apple it comes back saying my system is up to date.
    I'm using a MacMini running Mac OSX v 10.6.8 with processor 2.26ghz, Intel core 2 duo, memory 2gb 1067 mhz ddr3, and my dvd drive is a pioneer dvd-rw dvrts08, firmware q81f.
I really need help to fix the problem with the IDVD software or to know that I need to purchase another DVD maker software for my Mac.  The product below says my Mac is running OS X v 10.7.2 but it isn't it is running v 10.6.8 as I stated.
    URGENT!!!!

My macmini is under 2 years old.  I reviewed your list of affects and I am going down the list to determine possible cause and effect.
I did try the PRAM process.  The DVD still won't play on my DVD player but it did play on my son's Sony blue ray.  I burned it at 2x burn rate after the PRAM process completed.
I can assume that's progress.  The audio did however skip a couple of times while playing.  That is new.
I will continue down the list using different type of blank dvd's etc.
Question: As I was reading through some other issues I'm learning that Mac/Apple is discontinuing IDVD, is that correct?
Are you aware of some other software to purchase that will create dvd's on the mac?  If so, I may as well go that route rather than wasting more time using a defunct product.  What is your opinion?

  • IDVD disc burns but won't play

I burned an iPhoto slideshow to iDVD from my G5.
It won't play back on the G5 (gives you've inserted an empty disc error)
It only plays on my MacBook Pro and the MacPro at work.
I need it to play on a standard DVD player and on PCs.
The media is Memorex DVD+R 16X
Did I miss a setting somewhere?

    Good day, Klaus1!
I am getting the impression that Memorex discs are not good quality. Is this a longevity issue or that some burn and some don't, the end result being that you toss out as many as you keep? Just asking, because Staples has a sale at the end of the week for a spindle of 100 Memorex DVD's (both -R and +R) that normally sell for $70 US that will be on sale for $9.99 US.
Your opinion, please and thank you.
(By the way, iDVD is working fine after your days of help, thanks)

  • DVD SP burned disc won't play on DVD player

I recently compiled a FCP HD project into Standard Defintion 16:9 and imported it into DVD SP 4. I build, format and burned a DVD-R disc without any problems. However the disc won't play on any of the DVD players in my house (1 philips and 1 Pioneer). I checked all settings and can't find anything wrong! Remarkably, just before this I burned an older (SD 4:3) project on the same brand/type disc and that one worked flawless.
What am I missing, pleas help!
    Evert

Double check to make sure you did not make an HD DVD (take a look to see what is on the disc, are the folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS or other name? It can happen where you think you made an SD but it is HD ) Also did you set a first play? Did you somehow make an NTSC (or PAL) and playing it on a machine that is not NTSC/PAL as applicable?
What brand media did you use? Some brands can be inconsistent...

  • Burned DVD won't play in DVD player?

I burned a video I purchased on itunes to a DVD using Finder (dragging and dropping onto disk). It burned fine, but won't play in my DVD player. It will play on my computer though.
Are there different formats you can burn it in? Am I not using the correct format?
    I am using a DVD-RW disk.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

In iTunes you create a Playlist from the tracks you want and then select it and 'Burn Playlist to disc', just dragging the files in the Finder is just copying the files across and not making a playable CD.

  • Burned CDs won't play on portable player

My friend who has a PC has been burning CDs for me of spoken-word MP3s. They play fine on my portable CD player. Recently she gave me a USB drive with a bunch of MP3s for me to burn myself on my new MacBook Pro. The CDs I burned won't play on the CD player (but they will play in iTunes on my computer). I don't understand what's going on...can anyone help out? Thanks.

Yes, if your interest is only in burning CDs and you don't want to keep the music in iTunes, the process is pretty cumbersome. You may want to buy a disc burning application like Toast, which can burn all sorts of formats without your needing to import anything into iTunes.

  • Burned CD won't play in car player

I know similar questions to this have been asked, but I have not found a solution that works for me yet. I am burning a CD-R with iTunes, but it will not play in my car player. I have tried burning at different speeds. I have tried 3 different media types (Verbatim, Memorex, generic). None of them worked. I checked my iTunes settings to make sure I am burning an audio CD, and not an MP3 or data CD. I've probably burned 15 CDs to no avail.
I am burning them on a Sony drive. The CDs play fine in my computer. Just not in my car.
My car player is an older player (1996 factory Delco), but it has no problems playing normal CDs. I get an "E20" error message if that makes any difference.
Is it just a matter of trying more media types? Anybody have a media type that they got to work in an older Delco CD player? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I solved my problem. I can't guarantee this will work for anybody else having this same issue, but it worked for me. Since my player is 10 years old, I thought maybe the problem was the newer size of CD-Rs. So I bought some of the older, smaller size CD-Rs (650 MB versus the newer 700 MB). Now I can't be sure that was the total reason it worked, but it now works with these new CD-Rs. They are also Verbatim brand, which I also tried unsuccesfully with the 700 MB size. These Verbatims are not only 650 MB, but also a light blue tint on the bottom, which may also have made a difference. I don't know. I couldn't find any of these older, smaller CD-Rs at any local store. I found them on Amazon and ordered them there. These are the ones I ordered if you are interested.

Again, I can't guarantee these will work for you. There are probably many reasons why iTunes burned CDs won't work in some players.

  • Burned disc won't play in CD Player

    Help Please!
I burned a disc in iTunes.
    The disc will play in the computer;
but it won't play in the CD player in
the car or the home stereo.
I suspect it is a file extension issue,
but I don't know how to check or change
    anything.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes Audio CD should play just about anywhere so if it's not playing then it's not down to the setting you have chosen. It may just be your players, some can be fussy about what they will read, or it could even be the CD media itself. Have you been able to play CDs you've burned before or is this the first time you've had a problem? Have you another brand of blank CDs you can try?
Another thing you could try is reducing the burn speed and see if that helps, especially of you have it set at Maximum Possible. Open iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Burning and reduce the Preferred speed down. The packaging for your CD should have a maximum burn speed quoted somewhere, go lower than that. For instance if it's 24x try burning at 16x

  • Disk burned today won't play on tv; yesterday's does

I have created two very simple presentations in iMovie - title slides, a few images and an audio track. Both presentations are less than 3 minutes long. I burned one yesterday and it plays fine in dvd player. Burned the other today and won't play in dvd player (disk error or the player just ejects the disk). I am using Apple DVD-R 4X disks. I changed no settings between burning the two disks. Have never had trouble with disks not playing on dvd player (same dvd player each time) Any idea what went wrong?

    You
    b should
always create a disk image and burn that to DVD-R. I'm not saying this will solve this problem. Once you've encoded the project, nothing changes and you can burn additional DVD-Rs knowing that you're using an encoded file that did work, and should work in the future.
You could take the successful DVD and create a disk image from that and then burn another DVD-R to see if it will work.

    File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Burned CD won't play outside of iTunes

I tried to burn a purchased single (Rob Thomas - A New York Christmas) to a CD yesterday. It seemed to burn successfully, except when I went to play the CD in iTunes the song info showed up as something completely different (some Duran Duran song). Fortunately, the song played just fine and was indeed the Rob Thomas song that I had burned. Unfortunately, when I went to play the CD in my stereo it wouldn't play. The CD also wouldn't play when I tried to play it in Windows Media Player. I tried to burn the CD again using another brand of CD (tried both Sony and TDK), but it still didn't work. I have double checked the "Burning" settings in iTunes and everything seems to be set correctly (i.e. it is set to "Audio CD").
Is there anything that I can do to burn this song so that I can play the CD on my stereo? Is there any way to get iTunes to recognize the song correctly?
    Thanks.

  • Burned CD won't play past the 5th track or past 10 minutes of any playlist

After the description of the problem, I have also made notations of all the things I have done, checked, or provided as useful information to the troubleshooter as to how the machine has performed so redundacy can be avoided.
Whether using the Burner in iTUNES or Toast 5.2.1, ten tracks of music totaling 30 minutes of play time were burned. Both play lists were identical. These tracks were checked while in the library and contained no errors and played flawlessly from the digital iTunes Library.
They burned and finished up without any funny error codes.
Upon playback of the CD in iTunes, only the first 5 tracks could be played. Track number 6 began with clicking sounds and then hit dead air even thought the iTunes playing indicator indicated it was playing the track.
Track number 7 played about 1/3 into the song, stopped for several seconds, played 3 more seconds, stopped, then played 4 more seconds, then stopped. Each time the sound stopped, so did the countdown timer, which showed that iTunes seemed to be what was hesitating. It never missed a single note between intervals of starting and stopping. It was as if someone kept hitting the play/pause button over and over again, yet no one had touched a thing.
The second test was to play these through Quicktime player.
It would play the first 5 tracks. On the 7th track the player window would appear, then the spinning beachball of death would spin. I would be forced after waiting minutes of inaction to Force Quit Quicktime, which the Force Quit window would inform me Quicktime was (not responding).
The following is written to eliminate the most obvious suggestions I anticipate in receiving. I have already thought of everything I can on my own beyond incantations and an Apple corer!
    * I have always used TDK-CD-RWs since I bought the machine in 2003 with no problems in the past. I know it isn't the brand of disks I use. My machine read my old Mac burned TDK disks right up to the final track, 50 minutes into the playlist.
*My portable CD player has never had a problem playing these in the past. It can play all the ones I burned 4 months ago.
    * I did purchase a CD& DVD cleaning disk and cleaned the player in the MAC and the portable CD player.
    * I have burned this playlist from Toast 5.2.1 and through the Burner in iTUNES with the exact same results.
    * No, this play list was not burned 7 times so Apple/iTunes has shut me out of burning the play list. Most of these songs were copied from old vinyl records, and turned into AIFF files in iTUNES. The type of file doesn't seem to be the issue, no matter what the music is (AIFF or from the iTUNES store) the failure is always the same. A good half way into the timetable on the disk and I don't hear any more pretty music.
    * I have had the CD player in the machine replaced 18 months ago, and it was burning DVD's and CD's just fine.
    * The machine can read store bought CD's with no issues all the way to the last track on the store bought CDs. Also CD's I recorded 5 months ago play all the way to the last track, deep into the CD (I recorded these to the full 80 minutes I was allowed).
As said before I have tried everything I can think of.
Please save me from the Beach Ball of DEATH!!
    Thanking you kindly.

How did you burn the disk, as a data disk or as an audio CD (check your Burning preferences in iTunes)? If you burned the disk as a data disk, that's essentially just a backup and will only play in iTunes. You have to burn the disk as an audio CD to play it in any other player.
    Hope this helps.

  • Burn Disk Won't Play in CD Player!

I can burn an audio cd in itunes succesfully, however when I try to play the audio cd on my car cd play it won't work....someone help!

Now I have this problem as well. I'm trying to burn an audio CD from iTunes that will play in my car.
At first I thought it was an iTunes purchased music issue, but I tried burning a cd containing a mix of music I've imported into iTunes and purchased from iTunes. Same result. I've tried changing settings, different cd brands with no success.
I have been able to create cd's from playlists for my car in the past, but now all of a sudden I'm having no luck. The burned cd's play fine in my computer and in other people's computers, just not in my car's cd player (tests ok with other cd's).
I've even tried importing a burned cd back into iTunes then burning a disk off of that playlist, with exactly the same result. The cd just clicks in the car cd player.
Hoping this is something really simple, hoping someone can help.

  • Burns DVDs,  WON'T play commercial DVDs

So I seem to be having the REVERSE problem from everyone else. My iMac G4 (17", 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM), which I just bought for a piddling $200, will play and burn CDs / CD-RWs just fine. It will also correctly identify blank DVDs that I stick in the drive. It will BURN DVDs. In a few hours, I'll be able to tell you if it will read data DVDs.
The ONLY THING it won't do is play COMMERCIAL DVDs. I pop in a video DVD, it spins up, tries to read it, then spits it back out. Now, I know the not playing DVDs problem is not a unique one, but in reading on these forums, that seems to always be a symptom of the DVD laser diode having gone bad, which is certainly NOT the case here (as it's merrily burning away).
My GUESS would be that--somehow--my installation is missing the CSS library necessary to decode commercial DVDs. I had a similar problem getting my iPod Touch to talk to iTunes. But is that even possible? And, if so, how do I go about rectifying this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I FIXED IT!!!!!!
I read somewhere else on this forum about someone having a similar problem to mine. He took the iMac to a service depot, but when he got it there, they couldn't replicate the problem. He took it home, and HE couldn't replicate the problem. As in, it was now fixed. Turns out that just unplugging the unit gave the Superdrive a chance to "reset."
So I unplug my iMac to test this out, as well as to see if I can unscrew the access panel to determine how easy it'd be to upgrade its RAM. Well, I could only get one of the screws out, but when I plugged it back in, turned it back on and popped in the collector's edition of "2001: A Space Odyssey," DVD Player came up and began playing the disc! Never has "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" sounded so amazing!
So, thank you, John Westwood1! Thank you!
