After clean snow leopard install, ical crashes on startup

I just did a clean install of snow leopard and then restored from time machine backup. Now iCal crashes within 5 seconds of opening. I don't have a chance to make any changes or expeiment becuase it doesnt stay open long enogh.
I deleted the .plist enteries from ~library/preferences as advised in various forums, this has had no effect, positive or negative. I'm out of options.

I'd do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
If you are reinstalling an earlier version of OS X then download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo to upgrade.
Just an afterthought: Do you have at least 1 GB of installed RAM (and preferably more.)

  • Time Machine Not Recognized After Clean Snow Leopard Install

I've searched for this particular question.
I was unhappy with Snow Leopard dragging. I wanted a clean install. I did not have the original snow leopard installation for my computer, so I got a different snow leopard DVD. This has apparently caused problems with time machine.
The clean install in complete. I am now ready to migrate my Time Machine backup onto my iMac24". However, Time Machine is not recognized--at least not in the way I want.
When I plug my time machine HD into the USB, snow leopard asks if I want to use this for future back-ups. I decline, because I specifically want to restore what has already been backed up. The HD is visible as an external device--and I can in fact see the raw data of my time machine backup stored in folders.
However, when I enter migration assistant, time machine is invisible. On the page where I am expecting to select time machine, I instead get a perpetually spinning circle icon.
I suspect time machine is "linked" to the prior snow leopard operating system, rather than to the computer ID. Obviously, this is a bit of a mistake on my part. However, I'm already into the breech and I've got no choice but to go forward.
Please advise how to redirect my time machine to its new master (same computer, different snow leopard registration)?
    Thanks so very much.

Retail disk? Yes, it was the snow leopard CD.
I used a single license snow snow leopard CD install the first time around, when snow leopard was first released. At at that time I "upgraded" my system from leopard.
This time, I used a different physical disk with snow leopard with a family license. This time I did a "clean" install in which I first erased my hard drive using disk utilities.
There were no problems with the installation.
As I say, my time machine hard drive is "recognized" by the computer as an external drive. It just is not recognized when I utilize the migration assistant. It is also "recognized" as a time machine, but only as a potential time machine for prospective use to update going forward, whereas I want it to open up as a time machine for my iMac that I just wiped clean yesterday.
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Clean Snow Leopard Install yields the Welcome Video to loop continuously

    Has anyone seen this before?
Mac Mini (MA468LL/A) with a clean Snow Leopard Install. After I kicked off the install, I returned an hour later to find the Welcome Video looping continuously. There is a brief moment at the beginning (or end of the video) when I can move the mouse on the screen with a grey background.
Now, no keyboard combo's work at bootup. I can't boot to the DVD again, I can't clear the NVRAM, etc. I can eject the DVD, but only when the unit is looping the video.
Any help would be appreciated, Please!
PS - The only thing different from a typical install was this - I deleted the previous Leopard partition using the the Disk Utilities.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
After ejecting the DVD and shutting down your Mac, can you restart normally? If so, then you could wipe the partition again and re-install.
Also, have you tried starting in single user mode. At the prompt type fsck -fyremember to leave a blank space before the "-fy".
This will run a file system check, like Repair Disk and repair any problems if it can. If you run into errors run fsck multiple times until it reports OK.
Then, type rebootreboot  to restart to OS X.

  • Re-installing iPhoto '08 after "fresh" Snow Leopard install.

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here, but I keep seeing conflicting info on whether or not one can, or should, do a drag-drop of iPhoto from one volume to another. Here's my story:
I had an older version of iPhoto on my iMac. I bought a MacBook in late 2008, which came with Leopard and iPhoto 08 (7.1.5). I did a simple iPhoto drag/drop from the MacBook to the iMac, also running Leopard. Things have been working fine for 1.5 years now.
I just did a Snow Leopard install onto a clean drive and, because SL doesn't include iPhoto, I again did a drag/drop of that same iPhoto app, this time from an older drive to the new SL boot drive, which had never been loaded with an operating system of any kind.
Again, things seem to be working fine.
Do I have any reason to worry that I might run into problems with this odd iPhoto "installation" on a Snow Leopard System? Why have I read so often that simply dragging iPhoto from one disk to another is to be avoided?
    Thanks.

Frankly, I'm astonished that it even launches. iPhoto nowadays relies on many support files for the various features integrating with the OS and other apps and usually requires installation from an installer disk. I personally would install from a disk.

  • "You need to restart your computer....." message just after starting snow leopard instalation on clean disk

    Dear All
I try to install snow leopard on clean disk of my mac pro but after some seconds of processing, before any menu appears I get error message, saying I need to restart computer. I tried all suggestions I could find, but nothing is working. Would you advise please, what may be the problem cause?
    Appreciate any help.
    Best Regards
    Bartosz

You need to be running 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 to get the Mac App store.
Access to the Mac App Store would let you download (or re-download) 10.7.
So, YES, a retail 10.6 DVD would solve the problem.
    Do you have another Mac?
There are a few more things you could do using another Mac:
    1) you could hook up another Mac in FireWire target disk mode, and clone its drive onto yours. That could get you going IF the version installed on that other Mac is a separatley Purchased version.
    2) You could copy the Recovery_HD from a Mac with a separately Purchased version of 10.7, and then use it to download a copy from the Mac App store.

  • Re-download Lion from clean Snow Leopard install

My hard drive and back up drive both died at the same time. Aside from that fiasco, I've now reinstalled Snow Leopard on my new hard drive and want to re-install my previously purchased Lion on it. There are many posts that indicated that all you need to do is hold down the option key while selecting to buy it from the App Store, but since this is not being done from Lion, I only get the option to re-purchase it. I can't believe they wouldn't have an option for re-downloading it when it's clearly tied to my Apple ID. Any ideas?

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately there is nothing listed for Lion. All my other apps are there. When I try to use the Option key and click on purchases or the Lion purchase button it only wants me to actually purchase it again for the full price. Its as though it was tied to the physical drive that is dead instead of my Applie ID.

  • After 10.7.4 update, iCal crashes on startup

I had several failed attempts to install the Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 update.
After each time the installer got hung up on "moving items into place" and I had to force it to quit after a couple hours.
The first time I used Software Update. After I force-quit and restarted, Mail wouldn't run.
The second time I used the Combo updater. After I force-quit and restarted, Mail wouldn't run.
The third time I repaired permissions first then ran the updater in safe mode. After force-quit and restart, Mail ran but iCal still doesn't.
Viewing the system.log in Console shows me this message:

Someone please help me get iCal back running!

Ok, well if Apple doesn't cover this after their update broke my system I'll consider never buying an Apple product again. The first thing they did on the phone was ask me to spend $249 to buy AppleCare. I told them that I called to get their problem fixed and it was disconcerting to be treated like a revenue generator instead.
I mean, if I drop the computer and it breaks it's my fault. But if Apple's update breaks my computer, they need to fix it whether I'm under warranty or not. Many Apple customers are experiencing this problem. If Steve Jobs was stuck on delighting customers, I sure hope they don't disappoint.

  • HP Photosmart C6300 printer/scanner not working after Snow Leopard install

HP Photosmart C6300 printer/scanner not working after Snow Leopard install
Reinstalling etc does not work - does anyone else have the same problem or a clue as to how to fix this?

    Keith,
I got a C6280 and the scanner does not work anymore. I am for 6 days in contact with HP. The last printer driver install form the apple web site does not open the image of HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.dmg because of an invalid checksum. The skipping of the validation gives and error in the install.

  • How do I reinstall my operating system after hard drive upgrade on MacBook pro?  I have Snow Leopard install disc

How do I reinstall my operating system (Snow Leopard) after a hard drive upgrade. I did a Time Machine backup before the new hard drive was installed. I put in the Snow Leopard install disc and don't get the icon I'm supposed to double click to install Snow Leopard and then the backup.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Is the new HHD in the MBP?
Is the new HDD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Where is the old HDD? In an enclosure?  What is on the old HDD, your user data?  Is the Snow Leopard System on it?
Do you have a separate Time Machine Disk with your user data?
Answers to these questions should give an exact status of your situation so that one can proceed in the right direction.
    Ciao.

  • DVD Drives not working after Snow Leopard install

Hello all. I'm having problems after installing Snow Leopard. Om my MacBook Pro, my DVD drive doesn't even read discs anymore. It keeps it spinning for a while and then ejects it.
Coincidentally, the drive on my iMac 3+ GHZ is not accepting my discs into the DVD drive. It's not sucking in the discs anymore.
Both of these things started happening right after the Snow Leopard installation.
    Can anyone help?

Have been running without trouble and had total ability to burn disc images to DVD until SL installation. after installation, every burn attempt fails to complete, give me an unrecoverabl, unable to restart error. I does burn data to the disc, but fails at some point near the end of the burn wich renders the disc a "coaster". I put my spare HDD back in wich was running 10.5, the problem exists with that drive also. My next step was to load a fresh drive with 10.5, even then the problem exists. I find it hard to believe that the drive failed exactly when SL was installed, more likely that the installation changed a hardware setting, or installed a firmware update which cause the problem. As I am a repair tech, I have done a ton of reaserch on the subject, and I find that litterally 10's of thousands of people have had the same issue after the SL upgrade. Come on Apple, I always heard you were better than Microsoft, but as everyone can see there is a problem. Get working on the fix and patch it just like Microsoft.

  • Can't get some websites to work after snow leopard install, java maybe?

I'm a day trader. I use TD Ameritrade every day to work on. I believe the real time streamer and level 2 quotes are all java based.
This past weekend I did the Snow Leopard install on my computer. Until this morning it seemed like all was well.
I go to ameritrade and try to log in and it keeps saying it doesn't recognize my log in. I called them and they are able to log into my account so its my computer. I went to the java preferences and there use to be a lot of java types there now there are just 2, could that some how be it?
    Any suggestions?

Safari is a 64 bit application, is it worth starting the app in 32 bit mode and testing if it is any better.
use finder and highlight Safari in the applications directory, do a get Info (cmd i) and tick the 32 bit mode box and restart Safari.
If it does not help remember to revert back to 64 bit mode.

  • TS3479 quick time not working after snow leopard install?

Made video's on my iphone and loaded them to my imac. Video did not work in iphoto.  No Quick time pop up. what happened? Snow leopard install.

You need to re-install iPhoto because it's missing bits of itself:
    Library not loaded...
    Reason: no suitable image found.
Looking at the missing files it's possible that it's missing from the OS. But start with re-installing iPhoto, and if that fails you'll ned to re-install the OS.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

  • IPhone 3GS doesn't sync after snow leopard install

Since installing snow leopard, iTunes does not sync with my iPhone when I connect it to the computer. iPhoto automatically opens to sync, but iTunes is dormant, and does not list my phone under the devices menu.....help!!

This same thing happened to me today.  Snow leopard install and now itunes cannot find any of our iphones. It might be nice IF APPLE ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE HERE ON THE THREAD. We also have a brand new iphone and can't even get it synced, which really really *****.
It bothers me that apple is not responding immediately to this issue.

  • 17 inch i7 Macbook Pro Snow leopard install problems

Got my new 17 inch i7 MBP, powered it up everythings fine. So I go to re partition the drive and do a clean system install. Middle of the install it fails. Log file shows it cant read files from the DVD.
So I grab a snow leopard install version 10.6 to install from. It will not boot the mbp i7. It hangs on the apple screen with no activity circle underneath the apple logo. Same for 10.6.2 SL install disc I have.
I then try to install SL to a external drive and update it to 10.6.3. It boots all my non i7 macs here but when I try to boot the i7 mbp it hangs again on the apple screen.
I really want to use the i7 machine and Im dreading waiting on apple to send me mbp 17 replacement disks. I have no problems buying a 10,6,3 version of the SL installer but after my experiences with 10.6 and 10.6.2 and the external disk to upgrade to 10.6.3 I have a feeling the i5/i7 machines need specific installer discs.
Is any one aware of this or run in to it yet ? Thanks.

The only OS installer that will work with your MBP is the one that came with the Mac originally so you will need to wait for a new set.

  • Basic Snow Leopard install with special customization:  setup assistant infinite loop problem.

    Hi, all,
Based on this post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1395118?start=0&tstart=0, I'm assuming there's a problem with setup assistant running after a customization install reboot.  But I could be wrong.
    Here are the details:
    MacBook Pro
Clean OS X Snow Leopard install (I was "told" by IT I had to wipe the disk and re-install OS X after backing up personal files).
Installed extras I need/want (in particular, XCode, though I went ahead with the other optional software as well).
Installed the IT supplied "Supplemental CompanyName Installation Disc" (also referred to as "CompanyName Supplemental Installation Disc" ), which is supposed to create a customized, IT supported, setup.
When the supplemental install is done, the system is rebooted.
There is then a "Welcome" screen (starscape, with almost endless bombardment of the word welcome in various languages), finally followed by:
    a) select language; b) select keyboard; c) select timezone; d) Don't forget to register your Mac, with a "done" button.
Clicking the "done" button goes to a blank grey screen. and then loops back to redo the "Welcome/language/keyboard/done" sequence, ad nauseum (that is, infinitely repeated).
Per the above mentioned post, I have rebooted to the Install DVD and run disk utility, repairing permissions.  No difference on reboot.
Boot to safe mode goes to the same setup assistant sequence, not a login screen.
Another Mac user here suggested checking for /var/db/.applesetupdone, since missing it, or if it's correupt, could cause this problem.
So I booted to single user and checked for this file.  It is not there.  On the off chance the file is a simple flag and the content doesn't matter,
I did fsck/remount and touch /var/db/.applesetupdone but this did not change anything either.
Presumably, the file must be present and must contain some data.  If this is true, can it be created manually and put in place via single user mode?
Or are there other, better solutions someone could suggest?
    Many thanks.
    Bob

Ah, it seems I finally found something useful, at http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=84825
One of the responders supplied the content of their .applesetupdone file.
I was able to get this onto my Mac, in /var/db, as .applesetupdone (just to be safe, I linked that name to .AppleSetupDone, the name as mentioned on the above site).  Note that both names begin with a dot (hidden, in UNIX parlance).
On reboot I was presented with the CompanyName specific login screen.  It took a little bit more mucking around with passwords, but I was eventually able to login without any problem.
    Bob
