After cleaning out a trojan, Firefox won't open

Had a trojan. Got it deleted. Now, only for the user originally infected, Firefox won't open. When clicked, window opens asking which program I want to use to open firefox.exe. Huh? Opens & works fine for other users. How do I fix this? Can I recover this user's bookmarks?

  • After updating to latest version, Firefox won't open

I am running Windows 7. After updating to the latest version, Firefox won't open. I get a notice when I try to open Firefox saying "Couldn't load XPCOM. Is there a way I can undo the update so I can get Firefox to open. It's my favorite browser...I'm having to use another browser to ask my question.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 23: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • Firefox won't open after re-installing and can't remove from control panel. What do I do?

After a storm and short power failure, I started having trouble with certain sites loading, and pages moving slower. I emptied my cache and defragged and ran total virus/ malware scan, but still had problem. (Pages loaded fine on AOL) I decided to uninstall Firefox and re-install to help fix problem. I did this, and now Firefox won't open, no matter if I double click, right click (open), or go through "all programs". I tried to uninstall and re-install again, but now I can't get it to respond through my control panel, either.

Try the procedures in the [[Firefox will not start]] article.

  • [SOLVED] Firefox won't open after restart..Until I updated everything

When I start my computer or reboot Firefox won't open unless I keep clicking the icon. I have it pinned to the task bar and it's set as default. when I click the icon it glows orange but then fades back to clear. sometimes as many as 15 - 20 times before it starts. I clean the temporary files every day with CCleaner. I'm not that computer smart but I haven't changed any settings and it was working perfectly until a few days ago. Once it opens I have o problems opening it and closing it
    UPDATE:
I disabled the Facebook video call plug in updated all my Firefox stuff and it opened first try

Thank you Alice It took me two years to get Firefox looking exactly how I wanted it. I'm not very good with computers. I thought I would have to start over. The strange thing is there was no indication of a problem. It just wouldn't open. Skype kept crashing my computer so I followed their instructions on removing everything in the registry. I remembered something about Facebook video chat being through Skype so it just made sense to disable it. I didn't even know I had it until I updated the rest of the stuff. I don't know if that was it but Firefox is working and that's what matters.

  • After logging out of mozilla firefox i cannot log back in to mozilla firefiox , why ?

after logging out of Mozilla Firefox
    I can't log back in
    why ?
    please help me

This just happened to me too. But I've been on iTunes Match for several months now. I've had the problem several times before where ITM says something's "not available at this time; try again later," and at those times I've had to sign out of my iTunes Store account and back in for ITM to work again.
But this time, when I tried to turn on iTunes Match again, I got this error (on my screen right now):
iTunes match is matching a library from another computer. Only one library can be matched at a time. If you continue, the other iTunes Match session will be stopped and this computer's library will be matched instead. Buttons: [Cancel] [Match this computer]
Well, I surely do NOT want to "Match this computer", as I have several thousand songs in iCloud that are NOT on this computer!
    What is going on???

  • Firefox won't open links from Mac Mail

Like everyone else Apple Mail links will not open in Firefox if it is already open. Clicking a link brings FF to the front but no page loads. Links work if FF is not open. Links work if command is pressed whilst clicking the link (opens in new tab in background).
Problem occurred after 32.0.2 update, it appeared to briefly resolve itself after 32.0.3 update, but stopped (I think) on next reboot.
Have monkeyed around for ages with different combinations of default browser and rebooting.
Will abandon FF and go back to Safari if this isn't sorted soon - shame.

I just want to link to these earlier threads so you don't get a lot of duplicate suggestions that have already been covered there:
    * [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1018542 Firefox won't open email links after update to version 32]
    * [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1023202 No tab opens when I click on a link if any Firefox window is already open]
(There might be others, but those are the ones I've seen)
Work is proceeding on [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1017595 Bug #1017595 – Links from external applications sometimes fail to open when Firefox is hidden] but as you can tell from the title, this is focused on the problem of Firefox not coming out of hiding from the dock or coming out of hiding but not loading the page. If this also occurs when Firefox is not hidden at all, there may be a secondary issue. But hopefully solving the one will solve the other. Unfortunately, I don't know whether it will be in time for Firefox 33.

In order to test the problem, I think my suggestion is better; at least as a first try. Without Firefox running and without ~/.mozilla; no misconfiguration should prevent Firefox to run. The options you suggest will try to disable any problematic configuration. It can be usefull if you need to start Firefox to fix a configuration problem; but as a firt try renaming the ~/.mozilla is better because you are sure that Firefox can't read anything that can hurt it. Only after having figured out that a bad ~/.mozilla is the cause of the problem, we can try to fix the configuration (or restart with a new configuration).

Updated to 4.0 version and when it finished loading I got 4 identical Firefox icons on my desktop. I went back in time on my computer to go back to an order version and Firefox won't open or is very slow to open.

    Do a clean (re-)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    * It may not be necessary to create a new profile, so first try if it works with your current profile and if not then create a new profile.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Tried to use Restore to return to pre-Firefox4 but now Firefox won't open and won't uninstall.

After trying to maneuver the new Firefox 4.0 for a while and giving up, I wanted to go back to the 3.6.1.6 version. I used the Restore feature to try to go back to the pre-Firefox 4.0 dowload. Since then, Firefox won't open. I have tried to uninstall Firefox 3.6.1.6, which is listed in my installed programs in the Control Panel, but it doesn't do anything. At this point I don't know what to do. I want to re-instate the 3.6.1.6 version on my computer. Thanks.

You're in a bit of a pickle here because you can't use System Restore to revert to 3.6.16. You probably now have version 1.9.2.x which is in part, files which were not removed when you installed FF4
What you can try and do is use System Resore to undo the last restoration which should take you back to 4.0 again. If that fails, see this article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_firefox
If the undo restoration is successful, do the following to revert to 3.6.16
Go to [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html Download Firefox v3.6.16] and download it to the desktop. If necessary, download the file with IE8 and choose to save it to your desktop when you see the prompt.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
Then reboot and delete the folder called '''Mozilla Firefox''' at this location: ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox''
Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.
Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

  • Firefox won't open following update. Can't open Profile Mgr, even when using entire directory path in cmd line

I'm running Firefox on a Windows 7 machine. Firefox won't open following the latest update. I've read the help articles and it seems like I need to create a new profile because my settings have likely been corrupted. I'm unable to open Profile Mgr, even when using entire directory path in cmd line. I've tried the following commands in the command line:
    firefox -p
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
    Nothing happens with either command.
I'm also running Norton Internet Security. I read a help article Re Virtual Browsing features possibly causing a problem. The article said to check the virtualization setting in the internet security software and to clear the virtual cache. I went thru all of the settings menus in Norton Internet Security version 21.6.0.32 and I didn't see anything that looked like 'virtualization" settings, so I assumed that this doesn't apply to me.
If you have any ideas, I'd sure appreaciate your expertise!!

hello arcandl, when firefox isn't launching after you double-click on the shortcut this is sometimes also a sign of malware being active on a system.
you might want to try running a scan with some different other security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] which are specialised in removing adware and browser hijackers.

  • Firefox won't open because it says it is already open when it ain't

Firefox won't open because it says it is already open. It appears Firefox is operating in the background. Tried to remove it but we get the same message to log out of Firefox. For 10 years we have been using McAfee with all features but it does not detect any virus or malaware etc. It appears it might be a malaware problem but even using all the latest Microsoft fixes hasn't helped. We used Vista Business Professional with all the latest service packs updated. We use the latest version of Firefox as of up to around 3 weeks or so ago when this issue first appeared.

I suspect you need more expert help but here are a few things you can try.
If you can't open Firefox(double click on Firefox desktop icon) try Safe Mode - Hold down the Shift Key as you double click on the icon>don't check anything on the page that opens>continue. If Firefox opens and works in this safe mode go to Add-ons> Extensions and look for "Ask". Then look at Add-ons >Plug-ins and again look for "Ask" . Remove, delete, disable any Asks. If you do remove any, close Firefox. And try again in Normal Mode.
The Ask website has detailed instructions for removal but you need to find it on your computer and have your computer in working order.
If there is no sign of Ask and Firefox is working well in Safe Mode you should work your way through this -
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes
Eventually you might need to grapple with About:Config and even your Windows Registry but I would recommend a complete uninstall and re-install before that. Unfortunately that often doesn't work.
That all sounds very daunting but taken step-by-step you might get lucky early.

    Hello Gigi,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the iTunes app after upgrading to iOS 7.
The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPhone:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching the iTunes app, I recommend restarting your phone and then resetting if it's still not working:
    Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPhone:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software

    Hello sillysewer,
I youve only been re installing the iTunes app itself, then I would recommend uninstalling all of the iTunes associated files as well.

  • Firefox won't open when I click on the icon. I've tried uninstalling so that I can reinstall, but it says I have to close firefox (which isn't open), so I'm stuck.

The problem: Firefox won't open when I click on the program.
Solutions tried: #1) I tried to uninstall the program so that I can download it again, but the screen shows the message "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation". However, firefox is not open.
#2) I tried to download firefox, thinking that possibly it would update and solve the problem. However, I get the same error message that "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation" Problem is that firefox is not open.
I've done a screen shot, so you can see that I do not have the firefox browser open.

Thanks for the reply. I tried repairing the permissions (as well as several other things like deleting the Finder preferences file), but no dice.
Given that the problem cropped up right after updating OS X on two separate machines, it's looking to me like it's just a bug that needs squashing at this point.

Sounds like a "hang at exit" problem. There are several possible causes for that error. See:
    * How to stop the running Firefox process
** In Task Manager, does firefox.exe show in the '''<u>Processes</u>''' tab?
    ** See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application

    ** https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+is+already+running+but+is+not+responding
    * You may need to try Firefox Safe Mode
** You may need to use '''Safe Mode''' to locate the problem: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
**Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes '''<u>before</u>''' starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
** If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling '''<u>one at a time</u>''' until the problem reappears. '''<u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u>''' via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.
