After converting mp3s to AAC, does itunes write id3 tags?
I'm on OSX 10.3.9 and running iTunes 5.0.1. I just recently converted a lot of music which was on mp3 format to AAC at 128kbps (saved about 30% space with no loss of quality).
Now when I'm running iTunes, it lags and a small window comes up sporadically saying "Writing ID3 Tags."
Is this for the files I converted to AAC recently, or what's this all about?
out of interest how did you do the conversion ?
Make an intelligent playlist, with the setings, "kind is" - "MPEG"
Check that your "convert to" setting is AAC.
In your MPEG playlist, press command and a keys together (or Edit > Select All, from the menu bar) and choose Advanced > Convert to AAC.
When you are done, use Select All then option and delete keys together in the playlist, to remove the MPEGs from your library.

Converting MP3 to AAC in iTunes 8.0.1
I heard about how Walmart is offering MP3 tracks for 94 cents through their MP3 downloading site that is now compatible with Mac OS X, Safari, iPod, and iTunes. The MP3 sites has no restrictions for backups, playlists, computers, etc.
So I'm wondering, how do you convert an MP3 file into AAC file?
Sincerely,
Stu "the1macnerd" Carpenter
P.S. MP3 is okay (MPEG-3 Audio layer 1) but AAC (MPEG-4) is a lot better and sounds better in both 128 kbps and 256 kbps, even though 256 kbps takes up twice the space with no DRM, iTunes Plus. However, buying from iTunes Store is a lot better cause Walmart only has 3 million tracks available compared to iTunes' 8.5 million tracks. The iTunes Store is also worth it for people who don't want to buy the edited versions of music because iTunes Store sells both versions, and Walmart is more selective in that they don't sell certain artists based on religious or moral objections, such as Marilyn Manson and other artists. You won't get any benefit converting from MP3 to AAC, both are lossy compression formats and you could even end up with a file of lesser quality by converting from one lossy format to another. Converting to AAC won't add any more information to the MP3 file than is already there. However to convert any type of audio file in iTunes 8 you first have to change your import settings in iTunes>Preferences>General, choose the Import Settings button. Once you have chosen your setting (AAC for instance) highlight the track you want to convert and go to Advanced>Create AAC version.

Why can't I write ID3 tags?
Hi gang. Odd problem. Just very recently noticed it.
With some files, but not all, when I go to bounce them, it won't let me write ID3 tags.
I click the Bounce icon. The bounce box comes up.
I overtype the file name at the top.
I select destination MP3. Stereo mode is joint stereo. Write ID3 tags is ticked, so are use best encoding, filter frequencies below 10Hz , mode offline and include audio tail. Bit rate mono is 80kbps. Bit rate stereo is 160kps. Bit rate VBR is not ticked.
I click ID3 settings. The Bounce box goes out and then after a very short moment comes back set back to the PCM destination with the file name missing.
I go through the whole routine again. This time the bounce box goes out and stays out.
The only way it will bounce is without changing the ID3 tags. It flatly refused to edit them. Just no way, I can't get at them, that's it.
Version is 9.1.5 (1 7 0 0.9) 32 bit. Yes I have tried saving the file, shutting the program down and restarting it, it still does it. Once a file starts doing this, that's it, it always does it.
The only thing that's changed recently is DwellClick. Every file created after that seems to have the problem. Every one before it is still OK, even with DwellClick running. However, if I create a new project now, the problem doesn't happen, it's fine. Something must be happening during the project that stops the ID3 tag dialogue box being accessible.
Is this a software incompatibility? a software bug? suggestions??Hi
Erm, excuse me asking a really stupid question, but how would I do that?
and why is it affecting some files but not others? The latest file here does not seem affected. If it was a global preferences issue would it not affect all files? is it not more likely that it is the project itself that has the issue?
I notice that the project file can be examined as a package which apparently contains a folder LgDoc, which itself contains
displayState, which appears to contain coding instructions and data
documentData, which is mostly unintelligible coding with odd bits in clear text
windowImage.jpg, which is just the graphic for the icon.
This for example is a displayState file from a project that does not allow access to the ID3 tags:

Question - is this corrupt, or is the other (mostly unintelligible one) corrupt? -
Has anybody ever converted an mp3 into AAC and had the AAC file be larger than the mp3? All of the music on my iPod (close to 3000 songs) is AAC, and when I have an mp3 file I've been converting them, but I did that with a podcast, only 2 discover the size increased from 24 to 65 MB!!!
Does this make any sense?!
Also, am I doing myself a lot of harm, quality-wise, by making this conversion?Converting 320kbps files into 128kbps will reduce the size by around 60%, but at the same time reducing audio quality. How much so can only be determined by you after several sid-by-side tests. You may or may not be able to hear the difference with your ears and equipment (iPod/headphones).
Converting the 45kbps podcasts to 128kbps will effectively triple the file size of each podcast, while adding absolutely no audio quality. Again, sampling a sample will lower quality.
Down-converting the 320 MP3s may not be as great a audio loss since they are starting off at a high quality bit rate. If they were 128s or 190s, you would notice a significant difference.
Just let your ears be your guide. -
Fuzzy output when I convert mp3 to aac (to make audiobook)
That's pretty much it.
I have imported CDs of audio books that I want to put on my iphone.
I am converting the mp3s to AAC - then changing the extension from mp4a to mp4b so that it is filed in the audio book section.
But during the conversion the quality of the track goes from clear to fuzzy. (like white noise in the background)
How do I get round this?but unfortunately I cant file them in the audiobooks section like that.
Why not? That's exactly what changing the *Media Kind:* does. Puts them under Audiobooks. -

I was converting my songs from mpeg to AAC in the iTunes software (not another application) and found a whole bunch of songs that weren't AAC. To convert a song's file format:
1. Choose iTunes > Preferences, click General, and then click Import Settings.
2. In the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the format you want to convert songs to, and then click OK to save the settings.
3. Select one or more songs in your library and choose Advanced > Create [Format] Version.
The song in its original format and the newly converted song appear in your library. -
Itunes does not read id3 tags and its a problem
Ok I have 60 gig of music and all of it is labeled correctly in id3 tags. But when i add them all to itunes some of the songs are blank with no information at all but if i go into "show in explorer" the information in the id3 tags instantly pops up. I'v searched google and found nothing so i hope someone can tell me a fix or another program to use that will organise my music like itunes does and also can put music on my ipod. So please help me with the problem.
ThanksIt doesn't work. I'v already tried that. I'v even tried converting the id3 tags and then removing them from the libray and adding them again. Still nothing. It might help if someone could tell me where itunes gets it information for its tags when you add music to its libray seeing as it doesn't use id3 tags for the information like any smart program does.

Bug or Feature? iTunes doesn't write ID3 Tags when you recorded in VBR mode
When you record music from a CD with iTunes (6.0.4 and 6.0.5) using higher bit rates (High Quality) together with VBR, then the iTunes database initialy shows a correct entry. But if you check the created mp3-files with the Finder application you will see that there is no id3-tag in the file.
When you later move your iTunes music folder, iTunes asks you to modfify everything concerning the embedded infos (id3 tags). If you then say "yes" your database is gone.
I saw a couple of postings where users complain about that iTunes loses the id3 tag when they burn a CD. I think that there has never been a physical ID3-Tag although the iTunes database shows a correct entry.
Is some kind of a bug fix out there or should I use Musicmatch within Parallels Desktop for Mac in order to properly record in VBR mode?Odysseas,
"But if you check the created mp3-files with the Finder application you will see that there is no id3-tag in the file."
You can't see ID3 tags in the Finder. The data is imbedded in the song file itself.
Regular, commercially produced CDs do not support ID3 tag information. When you insert a CD and it opens in iTunes, the application will go out on the internet and look up the track information in the Gracenote (CDDB) database.
Then, when you rip the CD to an MP3 or AAC etc. the track information is then incorporated into the encoded song file. Using VBR shouldn't prevent the ID3 tag information from being transfered.
However, if you then burn a music CD from that file, the ID3 tag information is lost.

Itunes deleted id3 tags on my mp3s automatically
the "let itunes organize your music" box is unchecked, and i imported my cds as mp3s, as i removed the songs from the itunes library (not the files), it took off all the tags!!!! i spent hours importing cds, once i removed the songs from the library, then dragged the folder back into the itunes window, the tags to the album, track #, artist, etc weren't there anymore!!!!! just the file name. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!! the program shouldn't have authority to mess with the id3 tags that are embedded into the mp3s once i remove the song from itunes!!! RIGHT?! what am i supposed to do with all the unlabeled mp3s!?!1 i'm not going to use iEatBrainz for everything, thats rediculous! could someone else try removing their songs from the itunes 6 version like the one i have here and see if they have the same problem?? its gotta be from the same folder where all your imported music goes....
this is making me soooo mad. i need an alternative program cuz this ain't working for me.If you remove a song from the iTunes library the file will remain in the location that it was previously BUT the tune is removed from the library. The id3 tag was never changed. If you go back to the file in its' original location you can put it back into the iTunes library and all the id3 info is still there.
Usually it is best to let iTunes organize you library - unless you have a special reason not to let iTunes organize.
I removed tunes from my libary - keeping the files - then added them back and all was as it should be. If you are looking at the file via the finder the only info that you will see is the song title (the same info as in the "Name" column in iTunes). iTunes names the file on the HD the same as what is in the "Name" field.

Tracks originally ripped in iTunes loose ID3 Tag then become corrupt?
Gurus....
I'm tearing my hair out... After investing in a Soundblaster Wireless Media device I started to copy the 6000 odd mp3's ripped from CD's and Vinyl listed in iTunes 4.7 (I have an iPod so need to maintain both libraries) to the Media Organiser. Many of the ripped CD's (possibly from later editions of iTunes) appeared to have no Tag information (Artist, Album and genre were 'unknown') I started to manually readd some of this but then found that the tracks were not playable in either location!!! iTunes and Media Centre behave like the tracks doesn't exist and skip straight passed them.
I'm guessing it's an iD3 incompatibility and was wondering if anybody out there knew what the problem was and if there is any way around this.
Thanks in advance
WayneWayneMar,
I had a very similar problem. Ripped tunes in ITUNES, added them to a library in Musicmatch. Everything came up as 'Unknown Artist'. Tried to fix the tags in Musicmatch and got a dialog box saying the headers were corrupt.
After a little trial and error went into ITUNES and used the 'Convert ID3 Tags' feature to change the tags to V2.3. Musicmatch detected the change and picked up the tags.
The 'Convert ID3 Tags' feature is under 'Advanced' on the top bar or available by right-clicking a tune.
Hope this helps,
Leebob -
ITunes reads ID3 Tag Improperly
I've just spent my afternoon naming 1,881 mp3s that I loaded up on my computer from old cd's that weren't in any music database and I named all the files properly. As soon as I loaded the songs into iTunes the artist switched to "various" and everything else is fine. When I get properties on the file, all the information is there. Why doesn't iTunes pick it up?
I'm using the latest version 6.0.1 and the ID3 tags are in version 2.2My mistake, according to this topic, it is apparently the "Sound Check" feature that is adding the random numbers to your Comments field, coupled with already-dodgy ID3 tags.

Can't convert mp3s to AAC anymore?
I just updated my iTunes to the latest version. Now for some reason I can no longer convert my mp3s to Apple Lossless AAC. Is it just me?
Where are you looking for the command to convert? Highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create Apple Lossless version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
By the way, why are you creating Lossless versions of MP3s? You do realise that MP3 is a lossy format and information is discarded when the MP3 is created, changing that to a lossless format doesn't add any information back into the file, you just end up with a larger file of the same quality. -
I used to be able to select a mp3 file and covert it to aac format. Now the only selection I get when I choose a mp3 file is convert to mp3. Whats up?
Check your import setting. iTunes converts songs based on what your import setting is so if "Convert selection to" says MP 3 that would suggest that your import settings are using the MP3 encoder:
