After converting to numbers I can't open xls files

I get the following message: "You can't open the application Microsoft Excel because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." I don't see why it wouldn't automatically convert this as my .doc files get coverted in Pages. Does this mean I've lost access to all of my spreadsheets that I created with the Excel???

If you drag an Excel file onto the Numbers icon, it doesn't open in Numbers?
The error message you're seeing is because your iMac's been upgraded to the Lion OS, and the Lion OS doesn't support PPC applications.
You've got a couple of choices:
1.  You can spend the $100 or so to upgrade to Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, which, by the way, includes a free update to the next version of Office for Mac.
2.  You can convert all of the Excel files to Numbers.  Be aware, though, that there may be some formatting changes made during the conversion.
I'm not at my Mac right now, but there is a way to associate files with a given application. It involves right-clicking the file, choosing Get Info, then changing something in the resulting window.  Unfortunately, I can't provide the exact wording just now.
I hope this helps.

Each camera needs a specific camera raw version (ACR).  And each ACR is tied to a specific version of PS.  See this list http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

You need camera raw 8.4 for your camera, if it’s Digital Rebel T5 EOS 1200D EOS Kiss X70. It is not compatible with PSE11; so it’s a bit odd if that software was bundled with the camera except that it will work with jpegs. I suggest you download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the DNG files will editable in PSE11(keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.4
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Can't open .xls files created by Numbers

All of a sudden, using Numbers '09 I can no longer open certain .xls files that I created in the first place by saving .numbers files as Excel files (using the "Save copy as Excel Document" checkbox in the Save As... dialog box). Some will open, but the vast majority attempt to open, and then I get an "Import Error - An unknown error occurred." message. Backed up copies of the same files produce the same result. New .numbers files I save as Excel documents can't open either.
Background: Earlier tonight while saving a .numbers file as an Excel Document, the blue "progress" bar got about halfway and then just hung there. Having not rebooted the computer for a couple of weeks, and lots of apps open, I proceeded to shut down other processes and eventually the blue progress bar finished and an Excel file was saved. However, after rebooting the computer, the above inability to open Excel files started to occur. Something in the "save as" process must have corrupted?
I quit Numbers, deleted the com.apple.iwork.numbers.plist file from Library/preferences, emptied trash, and restarted Numbers -- but that didn't solve the problem.
What would you all suggest now at this point? Would reinstalling Numbers solve this? (hmmn, where is that disc?) I'm personally fine with the .numbers format, but my clients are not, hence the need to save as Excel documents. Any help would be appreciated!

ack, this whole thing is frustrating. I can create new .numbers documents, save them as Excel documents, and those resulting .xls documents will open fine. HOWEVER, if I grab an old .xls document from a time machine backup (over a month ago), I cannot open it. Nor can I open an newly saved .xls document saved from the same original .numbers file.
It would seem that the only thing I can do now is take those old .numbers files and copy/paste the content into a brand new .numbers file. After saving as, the resulting .xls files open fine (with the usual "import warnings", but I'm used to those )

  • Can't open .xls file in numbers '09

Please help, I just purchased iwork '09 and installed recently.  I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8, numbers '09 version 2.0, pages '09 version 4.0.  When I try to open an .xls file the error is given 'Numbers quit unexpectedly while using the SFCompatibility plug-in.'
I saw a post from 2010 that suggested updating iwork '09 to numbers 2.0.3 and pages 4.0.3 but when I check for software updates it gives none for iwork.  I have not changed the original location or name of the folder/file of where the iwork files were installed automatically.
I've also deleted the com.apple.iwork.numbers.plist (& the Pages one) located in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences that was also suggested from this post from 2010.
    Thanks!

The latest version of Numbers is 2.3, but that is for Lion & Mountain Lion. For Snow Leopard you should have Numbers 2.0.4. iWork '09 installed from the retail disk or from the downloaded trial must be updated through Software Update. Those installations will not be recognized as installed by the Mac App Store.
But, as always, if you're not running the latest versions of the iWork apps installed from a retail box or the downloaded trial & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure all three of the iWork '09 applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. If you installed from the downloaded trial or the retail box, they must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • After upgrading to CC, I can't open a file in photoshop from LR5 interface.

Pre CC I could 'edit in' from LR5, but now, when I attempt to 'Edit in -> Photoshop CC' nothing comes across to Photoshop CC.
    Any ideas?

    Hi, I need -
OS 9's Finder uses File Type and Creator codes embedded in files to determine how the file should be handled - what program to use to open it, and how that program should process the file.
OSX uses filename extensions rather than File Type and Creator codes.
As a result, it is not uncommon for a file created in an OSX environment to be displayed as a generic unknown-type document when the machine is booted to OS 9; and for Finder to not know how to handle it when it is double-clicked.
If you know that a certain program in OS 9 should be able to open a file, try dropping that file onto the icon for that program (or on an alias to that program) - some programs are capable of trying to open a file done that way; others won't even try.
In most cases, a file created by an OSX app will not be openable by an OS 9 app - this is understandable, given that newer programs often use more advanced formats than older ones, even versions of the same program.
If you know that you will be transporting a file from OSX to OS 9, try saving it in a form accessible by OS 9 - many programs will offer a list of alternate file formats when you do a Save As of the file, or (in some cases) an Export of it.
Question: does the Internet connection (Internet Explorer vs. Safari play any role ?)
It certainly can. If Safari saves a file in a proprietary format, then IE will probably not be able to open it. However, a file saved in plain html should be openable by most any browser.
You might experiment with the settings in OS 9's File Exchange control panel, particularly the ones listed under PC Exchange. Adjusting some of these, or creating new linkages, may allow OS 9 to handle files which are openable by your OS 9 programs, but which are not identifiable by Finder.

  • Can't open xls file created by windows excel

when i try to open a xls file created by windows excel, my numbers (3.2.2) tells me that " 'file name' cannot be opened' please help, thank you!

  • Have iWork '06 And Can't Open .xls File?

I have been told that I need Numbers to open a .xls file.
However, it is not worth me buying it because I only get sent such a file once or twice a year. Furthermore, the person who sends these files to numerous people actually cuts and pastes them onto my email so I can see what they contain.
If possible I would like to save this person going to that trouble.
I believe NeoOffice might do the trick but it is a 160 MB download and my broadband is very slow. It would be very irritating to go to the trouble of downloading it only to discover it wouldn't open an .xls file.
Is there a free small size alternative available?

    Problem solved!
bphendri on the Leopard forum suggested downloading the free OpenOffice app (160MB), and in spite of the large size I decided to go ahead and risk it.
It opens the Excel documents and at first glance looks as good as iWork (functionally but not aesthetically) ...... though I probably shouldn't say that here!

  • After windows re-installation I can't open music files anymore

Hi, so I re-installed my windows and after that I installed iTunes. When I try to open my downloaded iTunes music files which I downloaded before re-installation, iTunes software says that I don't have privileges to access these files with this computer. The computer is the same which I use to buy those music files, only thing what is different is that I re-installed windows. Please help how I can play and burn my music files again.
    Amilo A1650g-15   Windows XP

The permissions on those files are probably set to be readable only be the previous owners. Since you reinstalled, you are no longer the owner.
To fix it, you need to have Administrator permissions in your account. Find your Music folder in Windows Explorer. The default location is "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music". To find out what your Music folder is, in iTunes go to the Edit menu and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab and under the General tab it will show your Music Folder location.
Right-click on that folder in Windows Explorer and select the Security tab. Under "Group or user names:", it will probably show long sequences of numbers instead of your account name. If this is NOT the case (i.e. you DO see your Account name), then do not follow the rest of my instructions, as permissions are not the problem.
First check to see if "Inherit permissions" is set. Click the Advanced button. Is the check box for "Inherit permissions" checked? If so, cancel out of the dialogs, then navigate up one folder. Get the properties of that folder and again select Security.. Advanced. Keep going up until that box is not checked.
Once you have gone up far enough in the folder tree, you have to make yourself the owner for that folder and every folder below that. Click the Advanced button, then the "Owner" tab. If "Current onwer of this item" isn't your account name, select your account name from the list under "Change owner to:", then check the box for "Replace owner on subcontainers.." Then click OK.
OK, this is a little dumb, but in order to get the permissions window to refresh you have to close the Properties window and reopen it again; i.e. click OK on the My Music properties window, then right-click on My Music and select properties again.
Click Advanced again. Is your Account name listed in the Permission entries? If not, click Add, then enter your Account name in the box and click OK. Select your account name in the list and click Edit. Make sure the "Full Control" box is checked. Click OK.
Click the box for "Replace permission entires on all child objects...", then click OK. It might take a while to finish, but when it does, you should be able to read all your music files.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

Numbers is a spreadsheet program and FileMaker is a database program, so you probably can't use Numbers to open them unless you had first exported them from FileMaker in a spreadsheet-compatible format.
If you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier and your old copy of FileMaker won't open anymore, it might be a PowerPC application that is not compatible with 10.7 and later. If that is the case, to work with your FileMaker files you should upgrade your copy of FileMaker to the latest version, which seems to be FileMaker 12.

I can not open adobe files that end in .doc. I purchased the 19.99 to convert doc to pdf and I still cant open. I get an error reading.

    Hi,
Which Adobe Service did you purchased?
If you have purchased CreatePDF please visit: https://createpdf.acrobat.com/SignIn.html
Sign in with your Adobe ID and password, and then convert your word doc into PDF.
Please let me know if that works.
If you have Adobe Reader, you cannot convert .doc file to .PDF by drag and drop.

  • Why does Apple say that Numbers can open and save Excel files, when in actuality, it can only open .XLSX files and only Export to Excel (not save-as excel)?

When attempting to open .XLS files in Numbers, the format is not recognized. When the format is .XLSX, the format is recognized. Why is it this way? It's still much more common for folks to have the .XLS file format on their excel files. Why would Numbers not be backwards-compatible?
Additionally, to state in the benefits of this program that one can save to 'Excel' is a little misleading. You can't save to anything except .numbers. Sure, you can export to Excel (with file extension .XLS, I might add), but you can't save or save-as.
Does anyone else see the irony in being able to export to .XLS but not be able to open an .XLS?
There is something to be said for clarity.
You can't expect folks to have Numbers and Excel on their systems, so how else are they supposed to open .XLS files in Numbers?
And I don't need to see another advertisement for NeoOffice or OpenOffice here, thanks. I'd actually like Numbers to be a little more sensible.
    That is all.

When the advertisements were written, there was no Lion so we were able to Save As Excel.
At thiqs time there is no longer Save As command under Lion but the feature is always available.
When your editing task is ended, you are free to use this scheme:
    File > Duplicate
File > Save and in the dialog you will have the option save as Excel.
Numbers isn't and I hope that it will not become an Excel editor.
Its resources contain a flag defining it this way.
I posted several times a script editing this resource.
This morning I'm not in a mood allowing me to do your duty.
