After Crash: Mail opens to setup assistant, Where is everything?
I shutdown and rebooted my computer after it did not want to take my password; the keyboard wasn't responding. Mail was open at the time I did this and after rebooting, when I open Mail it give me the setup assistant! In Library/Mail everything that should be there is there, my folders, my accounts... why is Mail not seeing this info and not opening it correctly? What happened? I can't see anything in the log and repairing disk permissions didn't work.
I have a back-up but it's at least a month old, maybe more. Seeing as my files are in the Library, I don't understand why Mail isn't working correctly.
Any help is appreciated as I am seriously freaking out.
Thank you!
What happened is that, probably as a result of what you did, Mail discarded the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and created a new one. This file is where all the account settings (but not the messages themselves) are stored. As a result, all your non-.Mac account settings are lost.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
You have three options now:
(1) Restore com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
(2) Set up your non-.Mac accounts in Mail again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
(3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try moving the new com.apple.mail.plist out of ~/Library/Preferences/ (e.g. to the Desktop) and rename the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Since Mail decided to discard it, I would expect this file to be corrupt (I don’t understand why would Mail discard it and create a new one otherwise), but apparently that often is not the case and the settings can indeed be restored by just renaming the file.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

Setup Assistant: Where IS the darned thing?
I just had the guys at the Genius Bar update the OS on my iMac from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard, and then updated it to 10.6.5. Rather than stick around the busy Macstore to get things configured, I opted to take the machine home and do it there, using the Setup Assistant as the store guy recommended. But where is the darned thing? I can't find it in my Applications or in my Utilities, and I only get lots of mystery files when I search using Spotlight, and I'd rather not open things blindly. So I guess I have two questions;
1. How do I find it and open it?
2. Do I even need to, if I was happy with the settings I had in 10.5.8?Actually, it's a complicated story involving a failed hard drive, a failed optical drive, and an OS upgrade that didn't happen the first time around, but I think the end result was, effectively, a simple upgrade.
So that takes care of that! Thank you. -
Can't create new account after running Mac OS X Setup Assistant
Please help me...!
Yesterday, my friend gave me his old MacBook (Mac OS X Tiger)...
He said that he forgot his password and didn't know how to reset it...
Soon, I do the Setup Assistant with this :
1. holding down Command + S.
2. fsck -yf
mount -uw /
3. Remove current Netinfo Database:
cd /private/var/db/netinfo
mv local.nidb local.old
4. Force Apple Setup to launch on next startup:
rm ../.AppleSetupDone
5. Don't forget to delete the home folders from every user on the system in /Users!
6. Shut down the mac:
shutdown -h now
But after running the Setup Assistant and after filling all of the important information, The "Welcome" video come again and the mac just run the Setup Assistant again....
I'm so confused with this... so please help me....I need it so Bad...hhe...
(Ehm...sorry for my BAD English..hhehe..)Hi MemphisBELLE, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You've done about everything you can without The Install Disk, if your friend doesn't have that then call Apple with the Serial# handy, or seek an Apple Store/Provider. -
After Leopard install Mac OSX Setup Assistant is in a constant loop
I have a friend who I persuaded to switch to mac a few years ago and he recently installed Leopard without much success on his second mac (it was fine on his macbook pro 2.13ghz), a Power PC G5 1.8ghz - 1.25 gb ram. When I had a look at it it appears to be stuck in Mac OSX Setup Assistant mode - i.e. when you put the info in and the Screen says "enjoy your computer" or whatever it just comes back to the same Setup page. (What's weird is can't get to the end unless it has an internet signal - wireless at his place and ethernet at mine)
I'm guessing something went wrong during installation as when I restart with the Leopard disc in and hold "c" Leopard install launches but only shows drivers and some languages need to be installed. I copied all important files via target mode and it shows that the Computer is "10.5". I'm guessing the full installation was interrupted. There doesn't appear to be a way to do a complete re-install. I ran Tech-Tool and Disk Warrior to rebuild and verify permissions etc. No joy!
I'd like to do a full re-install of Leopard but I can't. As I have all important info backed up I guess I might have to completely wipe the disc and install Leopard on the blank disc - should this be okay as I've never done that before?
Any other suggestions appreciated.If I press go back ...it just goes back to the Welcome screen.
I should mention that if I try and select anything that needs to be opened in a window from the Apple menu nothing opens up. For example if I choose System Preferences it will show System Preferences in the top menu but no window will open. -
Why won't Mail open with windows placed where I left them?
I use Mail all day (and night).
I have 3 viewer windows open - one Inbox, one Sent, and one misc set to either Trash, Junk, or drafts.
I place them as nested windows so that I can always see them all and click on the visible top left corner to choose the one I want to work with. Works fine for me.
When I quit Mail and then reopen it either after a restart or after transporting my laptop to a new location, I get all 3 viewer windows to open but never in the same place they were when the application quit. I have to go about repositioning them every time I open Mail.
It's hard to say, but I even think that the viewer windows open in same relative place on the screen that I never "showed" them. But it's always the wrong location.
Is there any way to "teach" mail to open these 3 key viewer windows in the same place every time?
SteveI did exactly as you described, locating the plist file and moving it from Library/Preferences to the desktop. I logged out, logged back in, and Mail started on the left side of my Dock and then promptly shot to the right. It is now to the left of a Google quick search box, an Applications Folder, a Documents folder, and a Downloads folder. I want the mail icon on the left side of my screen. How can I ensure that?

Broken VI after crash - cant open.
My PC crashed while running a subvi. Now I cant open it.
When I open it it prompts "Please find the VI named myvi.vi" - then I selects the VI and it asks me to find the VI again.
It contionous and I cant open it.
What can I do - please help.Hi,
I'd try to create a new VI named myvi.vi. Just leave it empty. Your main VI won't work, but maybe you can open it (so you'll "just" have to redraw the subvi myvi.vi).

TDS: Cleaning up after crash with open transactions
I am evaluating TDS and have a pretty basic question. I have a test app that looks like this (error handling omitted).
// main opens/creates the env, checks for 'exit' on the command line, and then calls WriteBTree
void WriteBTree(DbEnv &env, bool exitSuddenly)
Db table(&env,0);
int dbResult = table.open(0, "table1.db", 0, DB_BTREE, DB_CREATE | DB_AUTO_COMMIT, 0);
DbTxn *txn = NULL;
env.txn_begin(NULL, &txn, 0);
char *data = "hello world";
for(int i=0; i<100; ++i)
Dbt dbtKey(&key, sizeof(int));
Dbt dbtData(data, strlen(data));
dbResult = table.put(txn, &dbtKey, &dbtData, 0);
if(exitSuddenly)
cerr << "Exiting in middle of transaction" << endl ;
exit(-1);
dbResult = txn->commit(0);
// cleanup here
If I kill the app via the exit flag while a transaction is pending, the table remains locked. I can see this with db_stat. Later instances of the app hang waiting for the lock to clear. The hang occurs on the first put in the loop. Who or what will eventually remove this lock? How does my app clean up from this crash?
I configure isalive and set_thread_id on the environment. I also configure 30 second transaction and lock timeouts. I open the env with these flags
DB_CREATE | // If the environment does not exist, create it.
DB_INIT_LOCK | // Initialize locking
DB_INIT_LOG | // Initialize logging
DB_INIT_MPOOL | // Initialize the cache
DB_INIT_TXN | // Initialize transactions
DB_REGISTER |
DB_RECOVER |
DB_THREAD |
DB_FAILCHK;
H^2I think I figured this out on my own.
Removing the DB_FAILCHK flag from the environment flags coerced BDB into cleaning up the truncated transaction. -
Can't get AirPort Express Setup Assistant to Work
I'm having trouble just setting up AirPort Express. (All I want to do is play iTunes from a stereo system in another room.) I purchased an "AirMac Express base station" in Tokyo a few days ago, took it out of the box, and followed the instructions as far as connecting audio jacks and plugging the base station into an electric outlet. (My iMac is also a Japanese machine, and I'm using it in Tokyo.
The next step was supposed to be opening AirPort Setup Assistant and obeying it. But the SA wasn't in Apps>Utilities, where the instruction manual said it would be, so I used the CD that came with the base station to install SA.
I did manage to open it and get as far as the first step, but then I got this message:
"In order to use the AirPort Setup Assistant your AirPort card must be enabled and AirPort needs to be turned on and set to use DHCP. Click OK if you would like to change these settings, or Skip if you would like to configure AirPort Base Stations using ethernet."
(An AirPort card was factory-installed, and AirPort is turned on.) So I clicked on "OK." Then I get this message and SA vanishes:
There was an error communicating with your AirPort card. Please make sure it is installed properly and try the AirPort Setup Assistant again.
I have looked in support as best I can and also tried some googling, but I still have idea what to do. Can anyone help?
Many thanks!I finally found the answer to my question in Joe Kissell's Taking Control of Upgrading to Leopard. For anyone who may need to know, the AirPort Setup Assistant is no longer used to set up base stations. That task has now been delegated to Airport Utility. Duh.
But why couldn't Apple manage to put this information in a place where people who bought a base station could find it?? -
Stuck in a Setup Assistant loop
Ok I have a problem hopefully someone can help.
I reinstalled leopard and reformatted my hard drive for a clean start. After I reinstalled leopard I did a software update, I can't remember what updates were need but several were updated including firmware, security etc. The updates installed but upon restart I had the spinning ball with the leopard background for 8 hours+ so I force powered down my MBP and upon restart the setup assistant appears, I choose language, country network etc and when its complete it goes right back to the beginning of the setup assistant where I am supposes to choose language and country. After I submit registration it just goes back to the beginning of the setup assistant and I cant get out of this.
Other details: I am using a different copy of leopard than originally installed I bought the leopard family pack and that is what I am using to reinstall not the original disc - I lost that one.
Hopefully someone can help I have a useless but pretty looking piece of laptop right .From the yellow bannered item at the top of http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235 one is led to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1196

Stuck in install loop in setup assistant
Completed a normal upgrade install and then everything locked up. Nothing worked but pulling the plug. After restart and log on I was taken to Setup Assistant. Filled everything in and once completed went to log on screen again. Entered password and back at Setup Assistant again. Quitting it locks the computer up and filling it out again continues the loop...
Trying an archive and install now. Not fun so far. Anyone else have this issue and a better solution then wiping clean and reinstalling my 300GB backup data?I had the same problem, only in a strange order.
At first Leopard came up great. So I started tweaking the new Leopard settings and then ran Software Update.
When I went to reboot from the Update the reboot hung. So I powered it down and started it back up and ...uh oh, Setup Assistant infinite loop.
I'm in the process of doing another Archive and Install. I'll let you know how it goes.
FYI: My MacBook Pro had 0 problems. My iMac had a minor issue which I resolved right away. And based on lots of other thread info, it looks like this upgrade is a bit touchy based on what you have installed where.

InDesign CS6 Crashes when opening any document from the network
Below are my notes on this issue along with the useless crash reports that Adobe and Apple ignore.
File location showing now special or reserved words in path: /Volumes/design/Design/Print/COLOR CARDS/Color Card-Country/INHOUSE
After crash, reopens document from crash and reports no issues
Same behavior even if ID is already open
Same issue if files are on server share with or w/o oplocks
Same crash issue if opening from desktop w/ all links local to desktop
Reopen after crash from opening on desktop opens fine
ID version 8.02 (CS6)
OS X 10.9.4 same issue with OS 10.8.5
I have removed and reinstalled ID CS6 and all patches
This happens on ALL Macs in the office
The server is a QNAP with access via SMB, all users logon as guest. NO AFP is in use. Only SMB. No errors reported at server.

Awaiting a fix from Adobe -
My new mac has two drives. Will setup assistant transfer files correctly?
My new iMac has a hard disc drive and a solid state drive. Does setup assistant transfer files from the old Mac to the new one by placing the files on one drive or on both? With setup assistant can I designate the SSD as the destination for transferring applications and the HDD as the destination for documents, music, photos, movies, etc.?
After completing the transfer with setup assistant will I have to move applications from the new iMac's HDD to its SSD?
Will the setup assistant have any effect on Lion in the new iMac?That's helpful. Is there any impact to quality? It's not practical for me to USB or Ethernet it, since I don't have adapters and storage, etc. It is, however, convenient for me to let the laptop sit for a day (the estimated time) and just take in data at it's own pace on Bluetooth.
Is there going to be any loss of quality using this? Choppy songs, etc. -
I bought a time capsule. I've hooked it to the internet WAN to modem via ethernet. I've hooked it to my macbook pro via ethernet. I've hooked it to my printer via USB. I turned the time capsule on. I opened airport utility which made me make up a password. And that was all. It didn't open the setup assistant, and I can't find how to setup for the first time (everything just says it should open automatically). I'm useless on computers (especially apple). Please help - in simple language. Thanks

You can download the previous 5.6 version and install it next to the V6 one just change the name a bit.
No, it won't install on Mountain Lion.
It will run on Mountain Lion, though. If you have a Lion installation, you can install it there, then just copy it to ML. If not, you can use the Pacifist app to extract it from the download on ML.
The name is Airport Utility 5.6.1, so you don't have to rename it to put it in the same folder as Airport Utility. -

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If the Setup Assistant appears unexpectedly each time Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard starts up, and continues to appear even after completing all pages in the assistant, use these steps
Start up with a Safe Boot.
When the login window appears, do not attempt to log in. Instead, click the Restart button located at the bottom of the login window and let the computer restart normally. (If the Restart button is not displayed, click the Back button, then click the Restart button.)
