After crash, recovery, new drive install: "locked disk/write permissions"?

After this trauma, I've already had the installing tech redo the generic Home setup they did (originals were lost) as there were tangled permissions, users, etc.. They did add the iLife 06 suite to the reinstall, and then I upgraded back it '08.
Now, iTunes and iPhoto give the message: "The folder (X) is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." What? Why? And why just these two?

Hi Larry,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions after re-install, then reboot again.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • Hard Drive Crashed - New Drive Installed - How to Write to External?

Not sure if this is the right forum. Please re-direct me if necessary.
My hard drive crashed last week. Files were non-recoverable. I installed a new hard drive, new OS, and new apps.
Question: How do I now write to my external hard disk? Before my hard drive crashed I had set my external to sharing with "read only." Now, with my new hard drive and OS, I can only "read only." But I use that disk to store backup files and I want to use it with Time Machine. So how can I write to it?

  • Cannot back up with Time Machine/Capsule after new drive installed in MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.8.5.
I just had a larger hard drive installed by Tekserve. This is to be my first back up since installing the new drive. I have 2 back ups: one to my Time Capsule via WiFi, the other to an external Le Cie via USB.
Time Machine just gives me preparing to backup but goes no further, just stuck in that mode. I suspect that it can't find my old drive, which it backed up till now. But I cannot find a way to correct this possible snafu. I do not see an option in Preferences.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Just so we are clear.. were your files all recovered from backup after the install of the disk?? Did you supply one of the backups to the company who did the installation so they could do the recovery?
You do want to be careful not to damage the old backup.. it might really be better to start over a clean new backup.
TM should be reset. It sounds like they did recover your settings.. Please check Pondini here.
    A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Also use A1 to check what the log is saying about TM.. the old backup will need to be fully indexed and checked if you intend to keep using it.. and that will take several hours to the TC if you use wireless.. The problem people expect fast starts but that is not possible unless you are doing a new backup.
You can also check some of the other help files there eg D1 long preparing for why that happens.

  • Mac Pro refuses to boot after new drive instalation...

    Hi
Could anyone shed a bit of light on my problem - Ive just got a new 500gb seagate drive, - when I load it up in order to format, im faced with a blank screen, and os x refuses to even think about booting up - there is also an odd click which Im guessing is the boot drive trying to start.
The new drive slots into place fine, and I made sure I was earthed out before touching it...
When the new drive is taken out, the system starts up without a hitch.
Do I have a duff drive? - or am I missing something blindingly obvious?
    Thanks for any help
    Maxine.

    Hi,
Funny that I saw this message, I am the person that had the exact same problem on the 20th of December.
After trying to install the HD, I had the problem as well. I ended up taking the computer in to my local Apple store, and they kept the Mac Pro.
It is now January 5th and I still do not have the system. Called them an hour ago and they said that the part (they didn't mention what it was) was on BACKORDER, so they had to decide if they were going to wait for the part or give me a brand new system. Hmmmm.... Could this be a NEW hidden problem for the Mac Pro now?
I wanted to purchase an iMac, but was afraid of the lock-up issues. I am starting to regreat my choice and wish I had got an iMac, at least I would have some kind of file server for my network
All I can suggest is to take it in to your local Apple store and let them check it, and then ask if they could fix it right then, or you two could have a system that's not able to be workable.

  • Cd Drive not working even after a new drive installed.

    Hello
About a month ago i had problems with my cd drive, it wouldn't burn a cd and every time i tried it sounded like the computer was going to take off! I took my computer to the genius' and it was supposedly fixed with a new disk drive put it. BUT i am still having the same problems! is there any way in which it may be a software issue as i am still having the same issues and they are actually getting worse!
    Please Help!
    Thank You!

You should go back to the genius who installed the new drive.  The repair will be under warranty.

  • Windows Crashes with Bootcamp Driver Instal

Just loaded Windows XP SP2 on my new IMac...partition and Windows load went fine. When I loaded the OSX Windows drivers, per the instructions, after quite a few driver installations, the blue screen of death came up stating Windows was closed due to errors (twenty digit error number...who in the world would know what that means). This happened several times after numerous attempts. Bottom line; everything (Internet, ISight, etc.) in Windows works except no sound...so a lot of drivers where loaded. Downloaded the latests Apple update for windows and latests windows update. Device manager states all audio codecs, etc. are fine...but no audio is detected in audio manager, and no sound. Sound in OSX is fine. I suppose there is a driver download available, but I could not find a sound driver on the OSX install disk for bootcamp...if there is one in the OSX install disk, you'd need to be a cryptologist to figure out which one it is. So, could the OSX disk be bad for the driver install?? If so, would that screw up the Apple for Windows update, which should have loaded the right drivers??

For MacPro 2008, BootCamp (OSX Disk 1)->Drivers->RealTekSetup.exe (Not in a sub folder) is the audio in my case. You should be able to run individual rather than whole BC setup.

  • I have new hard drive in macbook pro(08) and have SATA cable with external power source to old hard drive (10.5.8)via. USB port and newer drive(10.6.8) will not recognize older drive..Do I need to partition newer drive with older disk to recover data?

I have new HD 750GB Hybrid in 2008 Macbook Pro 17" w/ Snow Leopard 10.6.8  connected to old Hard drive(250GB that had 10.5.8 on it at time of failure) via SATA cable to USB port with external power source.. Computer not acknowledging old HD at all in Disk Utility or otherwise (that I'm aware of)..Do I need to partition New HD and load old(10.5.8) onto partition to recognize older drive for data recovery? Thanks Wayno08

You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction  and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
    I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The  only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.
Disk Warrior can be found at:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the  damage has already been done.
    Let us know what happens.

How to go about this?Should I install the programs AND the old drivers from the CD first, then un-install just the drivers and after that install the newest drivers?Or should i install the new drivers first and then install the programs from the CD ( and if its possible uncheck driver install there), would this work and is there that kind of option in the install process this way?I would love a quick response

Anyone who can help me out here? ppllllzzzzz

  • Km2m shuts down during boot after running via chipset driver install

Ive recently purchased a new computer with a km2m Combo mobo and am having trouble getting it properly configured and running.
I attempted to run the "One Touch Setup" on the drivers and utilities CD that was supplied with the system. Reeceived a message to first install the VIA Chipset drivers. I ran the chipset driver install and simply clicked NEXT on all the screens accepting the default options. The install appears to complete successfully and restarts the pc.
during restart the pc abruptly powers off!
I can reboot the system in safe mode.
I've run msconfig and disbabled everything and the system still powers of during a normal boot.
If I restore the registy (scanreg /restore) the system again boots properly.
What causes this anomaly and how do I resolve it? Is there some sort of hardware incompatibility? I'm stumped!!!
    AMD XP 2400+ 266FSB
    OS = Windows Me
    PSU = +3.3/28a +5/40a +12/18a -12/1.0a -5/1.0a +5SB/3.0a
    what other info is needed?

Yes, problem with the video card sounds plausible! Any not so successful updates recently? It is sometimes to make a good uninstall, which is required to make a good install.
4in1 drivers should - esp. with W98 and ME - be installed while in SafeMode and with all autostarting programs disabled, for example Antivirus and utilities.
Else, since you have a damaged regedit, I would reinstall Windows. You might have done something for example an upgrade or new install the registry, not healthy, has made a note of. Some utilities also overwrite and change system files without good results.

  • Moving backups to new drive -- without using disk utility restore

    Hello,
I have done some research on this already but I don't believe I've found the solution. I just bought a new media / backup hard drive, and I've moved my itunes library (over 100 GBs) to this drive. Now I have researched how to move the time machine backups to this drive, and know you can't just copy the files.
The instructions I've received tell me to use the disk utility to restore the old time machine backup drive to the new drive, however if I do that won't I lose the iTunes stuff currently on that drive?
Is there an easier way to move that data without me transferring the iTunes back to my laptop, and then restoring through disk utility, and then re-transferring the iTunes again?
    thanks,
    James

yes, you will. but it is also a VERY bad idea to keep other data on the same partition as the TM backup. first, this data will not be backed up by TM. if you value your itunes data you should have it backed up. also, TM is very buggy and there are too many situations when you need to delete existing TM backups and start from scratch. this should be done by erasing the entire TM partition. you should never delete any TM backups from finder. also, TM will eventually fill up the entire partition with TM backup. it will start bumping up against other data on the partition and you won't be able to put anything else on it.
the upshot is that you should make a separate partition just for TM. don't keep any other data on that partition. you can add a partition to the drive without disturbing your itunes data. type "create new volumes" in disk utility help to see how. however, that's not a good idea IMO as you'll have both the itunes data and the TM backups on the same physical drive. when the drive fails (and it will eventually) you'll loose everything.
Is there an easier way to move that data without me transferring the iTunes back to my laptop, and then restoring through disk utility, and then re-transferring the iTunes again?

  • Need help restoring original desktop after crash and new install

Question: is there a way to restore my original desktop?
My system starting giving me kernel errors. I was running Member when it crashed. I did a restart and the mouse would no longer work. Tried starting in safe mode. Mouse still refused to work. Removed most of my memory and restarted but mouse still would not work. Finally got the mouse to move in safe mode. Set my system to start from a different hard drive. This time the mouse worked fine. Ran memory check from this secondary driver and ALL memory checked out fine. Restarted computer with the original drive and once again the mouse would not work.
Finally, I re-loaded OS 10.4 plus ran all updates. I first tried to load it keeping all the setting but this made the system lock up and the computer would not restart without the CD. Finally, re-loaded 10.4 and archived original desktop.
Question: is there a way to restore my original desktop?
I found a folder that has the desktop stuff in it but some seems to be missing...
AND I cannot find any of my previous mail that had been saved. I'm sure (I hope) that it is here, but don't know where or how to set it back up.
I still don't know what caused the original problem...

    Hi, Edward.
    1. You wrote: "I first tried to load it keeping all the setting but this made the system lock up and the computer would not restart without the CD. Finally, re-loaded 10.4 and archived original desktop.... I cannot find any of my previous mail that had been saved. "If you performed an Archive & Install of Mac OS X and did not use the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option, then everything that was in your old user account, including your Mail, is gone. Before performing an Archive and Install without that option, you should have made a complete backup of the affected hard drive using a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution.
While it's unclear what you mean by "archived original desktop." If you mean you used Create Archive to create an Archive (.zip file) of your previous Home > Desktop folder before performing the Archive & Install, then only the files and folders that were saved on the Desktop at that time would be preserved. Mail was saved in your Home > Library > Mail folder, which the Archive & Install replaced if you failed to use the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option.
If any e-mail files are still on the hard drive in question, then the instructions in my "Data Recovery" FAQ may help you find them, but I suspect they are all gone.
    2. You wrote: "I still don't know what caused the original problem..."Earlier in your post you noted:"My system starting giving me kernel errors."and"Finally got the mouse to move in safe mode."If by "kernel errors" you meant the following message:
    That indicates a kernel panic.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
Since the system appeared to work properly in Safe Mode, this would also imply an errant Startup or Login Item could have been the cause, which is addressed in Step 4 of the "Troubleshooting kernel panics" section of my FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • FCP HD STUDIO Malfunctions After HD Crash and New HD Install

OK Pro's! I know that someone out there has had something like this happen. My PM G5's original internal Hard Drive crashed and with the help of the Apple Tech @ repair unit got most of my Programs only recovered. I decided to install new 500 MB HD in unit too. Used Migration assistant to move files. Now Final cut runs like road kill. Often hangs up and frequently have to force quit. Of course I could use iMovie but why when FCP Studio 5 HD is on system and does it all better (used to at least).
Any hints, helps, clues, and knowledgeable guidance is welcomed.
    thx.

PowerMac G5 w/23" Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Two LaCie 500MB FW HD

Yes, that's what I'm recommending for you.
Insert your Tiger install dsioc in the SuperDrive, double-click on the install icon, and when the installer reboots and begins, click through until you reach the Installation Type screen, then click on the Options button. Select Erase & Install and go for it.
Then, after the installer finishes, update to v10.4.6 again, repair permissions in Disk Utility at every step. Then reinstall your apps, update them, and repair permissions at every step.
    Should be Good to Go.
At the end of this, you'll have a huge 500GB Scratch Disk that will be very fast and reliable. Use your firewire drives for archiving media & projects.

  • Failed Drive: Trying to install New Drive in 7 Disk Array

We are set up on an Xserve RAID with 1-7 (250G, RAID 5) as one array, and 8-10 (400G, RAID 5) as as second array. In our first array of seven, drive 6 failed.
We purchased a Hitachi Deskstar 250G ATA/IDE internal drive to swap with the failed drive. We did not purchase this through apple.
We swapped the drives and put the new HD in the 6th port. NO GO. We placed the dive on port 11 as its own and the drive reads fine (as a spare).
How do we add this drive to the 7 disk Array?

I think yes, you have to find someone, who is able to read service parts of the disks. Apple's 'special' firmware is written here. The way is read this firmware from original disk and write it to non Apple disk. You will not be able to do this without special tools. Company which does data rescue from crashed disks can do this job for you. But as was written before, disk size must be identical with original drive.
