After cvfsck can't find some files? What chances of recover them?

Hi all,
so the problem is that in my xsan one of the volumes have restarted 2-3 times in a day. So i did cvfsck -wv. During the chek it reported File System Status as Clean and at the end that F+ile system have been modified+. After that i can not find some of the files. Is this normal behavior of cvfsck? Is there any chances to recover lost files?
Thanks in advance

In the root of the filesystem there normally is a folder "lost+found", in which files with strange names are found. These are the files cvfsck has collected in the recovering of the filesystemnames. It is sometimes not possible to recover the original file name and location. So this is the only way for cvfsck to give them back.
If you think the content of these files is allright, you can rename and relocate them.

If the filename starts with a dot (.thisfile), then it will be hidden on the Mac.
You can use a 3rd party App, such as EasyFind to search for the file on your Mac, and then re-name (remove the dot)

  • DVD SP can't find some files-won't start

When I try to open a major DVD SP 3 project, which worked last week, DVD SP states that it cannot find some files and that the project cannot open without them: "The movie file "Sequence 1-FIN-00000005" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly." I have to Force Quit DVD SP and cannot open the project. Other files complained about include 1-FIN-0000003b
Since I last opened the project, one of my external Firewire hard drives has failed - it will not switch on or run up or mount. That HD contained the scratch for FCE from which the movies (.mov) files for the DVD SP project were created.
Could it be that some of the movies that DVD SP can't find are Reference Movies which rely on a Sequence in one of the FCE projects on the faulty disc, which would explain whey DVD SP can't find them?
If so, how do I recover from this? The originating FCE scratch disc is lost, being on the failed HD. How can I force DVD SP to open the DVD SP project and THEN complain? That would allow me to delete the missing movies, recapture the shots from my camera into FCE, run the FCE project (which is on my internal HD), output the movies again but as stand-alone movies, and reinsert them in DVD SP's Assets and rescue the project. As it is, I cannot even identify the movies that DVD SP complains about
    Help! A serious problem.

SOLVED! I can now get the project to upen by tricking DVD SP into finding that the files are MISSING rather than that they are REFERENCE MOVIES which cannot find their "parent" Final Cut Sequence. Here's how:
Examine all the QT movies that the troublesome DVD SP project needs acces to (they will be in your Media folder). Open each movie and if QuickTime can't display any of them by reporting that it cannot find a file called something like "Abcde - FIN-0000008", that means that the movie is a reference movie, which means that it depends on the Sequence in your Final Cut project file which created that reference movie. That is perhaps because the Final Cut project file or its sequence has been deleted; or (in my case) the relevant Capture Scratch hard drive is kaput.
For each such reference QT file, add an "x" (or something) to the file name in your media folder. (A clue about which QT files are reference movies is an unexpectedly small file size.) Changing the file names like that will result in DVD SP failing to find any trace of them them, one after the other, but this time it will continue to open the DVD SP project file until it displays a box listing the missing file names. Press "Continue" and the DVD SP project file will complete the opening process. In other words, DVD SP will refuse to open a project that needs REFERENCE movies which lack their parent sequences, but will eventually open a project with MISSING OR WRONGLY NAMED movies. You should then re-create the movies as non-reference ones, perhaps after re-creating your Final Cut project or re-capturing the shots from your camera.
This is an important discovery for anyone who has inadvertently created reference movies and lost his/her Final Cut Project File or Capture Scratch. Without it, you will loose your DVD SP project and many earlier versions of it. So, never check the box called "Make reference movie" when creating a movie from Final cut.
    Whew!
However, I think that it is bad programming on Apple's part to create a situation when a file has to be abandoned unecessarily like that. DVD SP should treat orphan reference movies like it treats missing movies and just complain and get on with the job of opening. It's like my car refusing to move for ever more because, just once, a door wasn't properly shut!
I can't think why I did not keep a backup external HD for my Capture Scratch. I've got one now!

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.

  • Can't find some files after changing drive name

I keep all my music files on an external drive, and my iTunes folder (and iTunes Music folder) on the internal drive. After changing the name of the external drive, a good number of files (not all, and probably not even most, but a lot) couldn't be found by iTunes.
I'm suspecting that this problem results from having my files stored externally and separate from the internal default iTunes Music folder, but I'm hoping someone can give me some more details about this and hopefully help find a solution. Thanks.

  • [SOLVED]Nano can't find some files to edit Locate can't find ...

Hi! You've maybe heard this thousand times before, but I'm new to Arch Linux and Unix commands, so this is maybe stupid question and bla bla bla... but that's why there's Newbie Corner, right? I'm running Arch with LXDE on quite old and tired HP desktop, if that's important.
So, I'd like to have terminal right on my desktop, like hard core linux guys do. I googled a bit and found some how-tos. Tried to find file autostart.sh for openbox, didn't find it with command line nether graphical file browser, so I created one with nano to /home/user/.config/openbox folder, that's allright? After that, I'd like to edit rc.xml file. There's no such file (or at least I could't find one), so I tought that the file lxde-rc.xml in same folder is my target - graphical browser shows me that folder, Nano don't. Still on the map? BUT, there's where a problem occured - if I try to open the file for editing with Nano, there's just blank file. Tried several times, so it's not up to some misspelling or anything like that. There's been similar situations before, so is there something wrong with my installation, filesystem or Nano? I tried command 'locate' too, and it didn't work, too. What am I supposed to do?
And notice that question is about the Nano thing, Lxterminal on desktop isn't so important compared to undestandin my system tools and their behavior.

Yes, that's stupid. Maybe that's because I don't exactly know, which files I'm able to edit without sudo. Everything in folder /home?
Why are you editing anything in openbox directory if you are running LXDE?
I know that LXDE uses Openbox as a windowmanager, so that's why. Is that files in the Openbox directory are only for pure Openbox-session, and then other Openbox directories for LXDE-Openbox-session?
Do that all sounds like I should reinstall everything except base packages for Arch and start over with some more education, or is it worth learning to try to configure my current system... Jet there is not too much stuff insalled after the base system, only Lxde, office and Chrome browser.

  • Iweb can not find some files so MainEvent template crashed

Hi guys, just 5 minuetes ago I opened an IWeb and there was an error "Iweb can't locate files:......" So now a MainEvent template doesn't work correctly, but other templates do...help me please(((

You can try the troubleshooting steps under "Fix iWeb" here.....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/WebMusic/iWebTips.html
If this doesn't fix it you may have some domain file corruption. Do you have a Time Machine backup just in case?

It's hard to tell -- just going to sleep shouldn't have caused a problem.  Something else may be going on.

I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files.  Big problem.  What to do?

    Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.

These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here.
Audiobooks (and ringtones) are currently a one-time only download. I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them who are requiring the one-time only download restriction. To get it onto your other devices you will need to sync it via a computer. Depending upon what country that you are in, Audible.com have their own app (Audiobooks from Audible) so you might be able to buy direct from them, though I don't know whether you can buy within their app or download audiobooks directly from them within the app e.g. whether they need to be copied via a computer.

  • Can't find mp4 file after changing media kind setting to podcast

I recently imported some home videos into iTunes.  The default "media kind" is movies so I changed to podcast b/c I didn't want to mix home videos with movies when surfing through lists on my Apple TV.  After chaning the media kind setting now I can't find the file in iTunes.  Any idea on how I can update the media kind info so I can see the file again in iTunes on my Windows PC?

maybe the features of the usb port is controlled by the routers setup page most routers have some ip address you type into a browser and login to the router to set them up try that
because some routers have usb for external hd some for printers some only for firmware updates (like the Apple TV (which of cause are not routers but have usb connector for the sole purpose of upgrading a crashed firmware))

After it was done copying I can't find my files anywhere but the space (about 130gb) has been used on my hard drive. Does anyone know how I can get to them? I did change my user name from 'user' while it was copying, could this have something to do with it?

You don't want to do that by copying.
Your best bet, by far, is to use Setup Assistant.  If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.
If it came with Lion, it's a bit different: Using Setup Assistant on Lion

  • What is the name of the Bookmarks file? I just bought a new computer and can't find the file to transfer from the old computer. I'm going from Windows XP to Windows 7

I was running Firefox 4.1 on a 32 Bit Windows XP Computer. I just bought a 64 Bit Windows 7 computer and reinstalled Firefox. I backed up all of my XP programs and data to an external drive but I can't find a file for my previous Firefox Bookmarks. What is the filename and possible folder where I can find my old bookmarks and how do I import them into my new version?

I've had all kinds of trouble keeping my iTunes software current over the past year, but have found the easiest way to remedy the issue is to simply download the latest version of iTunes as though I am a first-time user and then just install it into the directory my current version of iTunes is using. Doing this has allowed me to update my software without losing any of my media/data. Hope this helps! Best of luck!!!
