After doing "software update" iMac wont start up !!!!?????

So the Software Update window poped up and resquested i do a softwareupdate. So I said fine... it was for iTunes. It downloaded the files... and asked to start up and when it when to start up it hasn't been able to start up. It just make steh sound, and stays blank...after a minute the fan come on very loud. Ok, what's up?
It's Sunday, so 800 line is closed. I tried the on-line tech support... but I got this computer in Nov 2005, so the basic tech support is done with. However, since this happened after one of their SUGGESTED Software Updates, i feel they should help me.
And no I haven't done any back up in over two weeks. So, I don't want to do a fresh install.
Any ideas on how I can get this thing started? or at least retrieve my old files and so I can take it to an Apple Store?

I have found that the best way to avoid problems with updating your OS is to skip the delta (incremental) updates from software update and use the combo update that are offered in the "downloads" section of this website.
I follow the following procedure each and every time and have yet to have an OS update go bad.
1) Backup your data, preferably by cloning the hard drive to an external FireWire drive using a program like SuperDuper. If things go horribly wrong, you can then boot up from the external drive and restore everything back to the internal.
2) Test your clone to see if it boots your Mac. A clone is no good to you at all if it doesn't work.
3) Download, but do not apply the combo update.
4) Download a tool like OS X Cocktail and run all the scripts and then reboot.
5) Unplug all USB and FireWire devices - except the keyboard and mouse - from your Mac.
6) Apply the update and reboot.
7) Run all Cocktail scripts again.
That is the method I have used since getting my Mac - recommended to me by others - that has never failed me once. I have yet to see an OS installation or update - including a major one from Panther to Tiger - go bad and I do not expect it to be otherwise in the future.

  • Mail crashing after doing software update

The Mail application now constantly crashes since doing the Software Update and updating the iLife 06 components.
I am getting the following error message:
"Program received signal EXCBADACCESS, Could not access memory.
    Reason: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at address: 0x7472756d

Can someone please help me get Mail working again???
    Thanks!!!

Given everything you have done so far, it may be a more simple path to simply reinstall Safari and Mail. Have a look at this post for how to extract these applications from your installer DVD. In the post, I mention the combo updater for 10.4.4. Use the combo updater for 10.4.5. Hopefully, this resolves whatever is causing the crashes. Please post back with results.
"have never made a clone copy of my system "
Two years ago, I had one of the worst computing experiences. I lost all of my computer information from a hard disk failure. I did not have a backup. Learned the lesson quickly. I purchased an external HD for $150 (you can certainly do better with the price) and SuperDuper for $20. Made backing up the system very simple and quick (after the initial backup). Has been a huge time saver on a few occasions where I have needed to retrieve an file(s). Also, gives me peace of mind knowing I have options for data recovery. I encourage you to create a backup strategy.

  • Updated software - now iMac wont start up

    Hi
Im new to this, I have just been given a iMac to play about with and updated the software on it like it told me too, then it said to restart the computer but now all i get is a white screen with the apple logo and a flashing circle display, i also dont have any of the discs that came with the iMac
    Help please
    John

Welcome to Discussions - ask the person who gave you the iMac for the discs, there is little you can do to repair it without them. You can try to reset the SMU:
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
And you can also reset the PRAM.
Let us know if either of those helped,

  • After doing software update to 5.1.1 on iPad1 the photo feature doesn't have edit button. Any idea how to fix?

Can't edit photos after upgrading ipad1 to 5.1.1

The edit button for photos is alive and well in iOS 5.1.1.  There is no logical reason, why you would not have the edit button.  When you open an individual picture in Photos on your iPad, the Edit button should be at the top on the right hand side.  If you don't touch the picture for a few seconds all command buttons disappear until you touch the screen again.

Yes. You can use iTunes 11.
As noted, you need 10.7.5 to use iCloud though.

  • 3 Beeps After Software Update, Will Not Start

Late 2012 Mac Mini.  Updated OS X with Software Update, upon restart it is instead beeping 3 beeps in a row, silence, then 3 beeps in a row again, for hours.  It's getting hot near the power cord.  Screen is black.  I finally powered down successfully by holding power button.
I've seen older posts saying this signals faulty RAM in Powerbooks.  I did upgrade the RAM to 16 GB myself when I bought the Mac mini, it has always worked fine (apart from snowy screens when it first awakes or starts which eventually go away and I understand this update was supposed to address...).
Have I voided my warranty by installing the RAM myself?
    What to do?

John, thanks.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test, and the memory tested fine.  The three beeps at start up has not returned since the original restart after the software update, so who knows what it was...

Rember, the free GUI front end for memtest is another memory test utility to consider.
The display may or may not be related to anything. It will be difficult to draw any conclusion without another display to substitute.

And concerning RAM, I've noticed I can't get the Mac to ever utilize even half of it... so I don't understand what the benefit is.
Correct, there is no benefit of additional RAM unless and until your system and what you do with it requires more than you have. OS X manages its resources efficiently, and there is no way to change how it does that.
I'm still getting snow when starting or awakening the Mac when the monitor has not been recently on, so there may be some interaction between the monitor and the Mac mini.  (MultiSync LCD2470 monitor.)  Because when the monitor has been running for a while I can restart the Mac without getting snow, usually.   Turning the monitor off and on about three or four times usually gets rid of the snowy image and I get a picture.  Every now and then it will abruptly turn to complete snow after having been on for hours, so who knows... I understood the snow problems were a common problem with the Intel integrated graphics and the recent software update(s) were meant to address it.  It didn't help in my case.
At least I'm back to the original functionality from before the software update...

  • Intel imac wont start after changing permission

intel imac wont start after i changed my hard drive permission to let me read and write, then i clicked apply to all enclosed files.i turned it off no problem. then it never started up again in os x. the grey screen with apple logo appears, then after a minute it restarts, and will keep doing that if i let it. i can start up in windows xp, but i dont know how to do anything in windows xp that will affect os x. i can use the hard drive in target mode, but i cant figure out how that can help me. i use a macbook to view target disk. ive spent hours looking through help and support. finally i do not have the os install disks. PLEASE HELP!

My apologies for the inept instructions.
Restart normally. Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the commands in the Terminal application to avoid typos:
    sudo su
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted.  It will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again. Now paste each of the following at the prompt and press RETURN after each.
    chown root:admin /Applications
    chmod 0775 /Applications
    chown root:admin /Library
    chmod 1775 /Library
    chown root:admin /System
    chmod 0775 /System
    chown root:admin /Users
    chmod 0775 /Users
    chmod -R -N /Applications
    chown -R :admin /Applications/*
    Again, my apologies.

  • After software update, iMac has trouble booting

I have a 17" white intel iMac (bought november '06).
I recently had to archive and install (long story)
Everything works except after every software update that requires a restart, my mac doesn't restart right. I hear the startup noise a few times, getting softer every time until it is not audible. The iMac stays on the gray screen until I hold the power button down and manually restarted it.
I tried resetting PRAM a few times, but it didn't help.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks!

Are you sure you really had a problem? After a system update, it's normal for the imac to stay on the gray screen for a couple of minutes, then even reboot sometimes. If you've interrupted the process, you probably do have trouble now. I'd download the combo update from the downloads section of this site, run that, and give it time to restart itself.
If you mean it was stuck for like half an hour or something, that's not normal.

  • Why does itunes crash upon opening after the software update?

Why does itunes crash upon opening after the software update? Everything worked fine until I decided to update this morning and as soon as the computer rebooted, the error message appeared.  Is there anything available to fix this?

I answered the same question in a similar post.  It's all to do with the wireless sync.
I used the following method to stop iTunes from constantly restarting -
    Open task manager
    Select the 'Processes' tab.
    Look for 'iTunesHelper.exe'
Select 'iTunesHelper.exe'  then click on 'end process'
    Hope this helps.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update (Couldn't fix it)

    Hi there,
I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
    1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
    2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
    CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
    3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
    4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
    5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
    A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
    B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
    C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?
Apologies for writing so many questions but I'm really freaking out!
    Thank you.
    B.

  • My mac book pro does not boot up correctly anymore after doing some updates. I did have my ipod charging to my mac book. I ran the simple updates and never go to the maverick update and now my computer will not boot correctly. Help!

Please help my computer is not repsonding after doing some simple updates. I follow the instructions and which is simply click for the update to take place. I did what I was instructed to do. I did not do the new update for the Mavericks yet. I just did simple updates. The computer shutted down and restarted but would never get pass the grey screen with the spinning wheel and the booting bar that would not go past a certain point befor shutting off again. The computer is practically brand new. I purchased the computer from best by 2012 and the warrenty just ended the past October. I hardly use the computer maybe 4 times since I have had it because I have another main computer that I uses. However, I don't want to do a hard rest becuase I do have the entire adobe suits software that I paid for and don't want to loose. I have an appointment with apple today to see what they say but I hope that my computer that I hardly every use is not defected after doing a updated pushed by Apple. Any thoughts or suggestions???? Thanks in advance Apple Family :-)

Well, I was at Apple for sometime on that day. I got a Genius that did not want to work. She basically jumped to the money to tell me that my hard drive was no good and that I was out of warranty (October 2013). I began to explain to her that I had only used the computer 5 times and that I don't use this computer as my main computer because I also have a Toshiba that is less expensive that I have had for several years and not one issue out of it. The rep told me that I could by a new hard drive for $161.00 and that I would loose all of my software and photos that I have on this computer. However, I told her that it's bazaar that it happens right after my warranty goes out and had I used it more often when in warranty before October then I would have been covered. Keeping in mind that I would still be very disappointed with the product because I would loose all of my information and it would not make sense to me why the hard drive fails on a very gently used computer. So I asked for a manager and it took her some time to get one. In the mean time I watched how the other Geniuses interacted with the other customers and seen that they were very engaging with convo and very help. I guess I just I got another lemon when I got my rep. When the manager finally came. I went from A-Z with the issues and that I felt that something could or should be done because the rep said that she did tests on my machine and it read to her that my hard drive was bad and there was nothing that could be done. I explained that I was not looking forward to paying for services to have my new computer repaired. The manager offered to give me 25% off the cost but I still didn't feel that it was effective. After he left and the rep wrote the notes in the system, I told her that I didn't think that all options had been exhausted and that there was something else that could be done. I told her to erase the machine and see if the updates could be installed and if the system would continue to do the same thing. The rep was hesitant and said that I would loose everything which we already know that we were at conclusion from the beginning. She assured me that I would happen again and that I would need a new hard drive. I just told her to erase the machine and get me another manager because I was just getting tired of her unhelpfulness and negative perspective. The new manager came and was very pleasant and I explained everything once again from A-Z. I informed him that I had the machine erased and that I need his help with options because I don't feel that the rep or the last manager was resourceful or helpful. He apologies for the actions of the reps and proceed to tell me that they will run all the updates in the store and that if it booted correctly that I should continue to use the machine with out adding the adobe software back on just incase that it crashes again and I'm out of money once again. However, if it does happen again and it is a hard drive issues that he would work with me to resolve the issues. As my computer went through the process of rebooting from out of the box stage another rep approached me because he could tell that I was upset and not happy. I told he what had happen and he said I think I can help you a little more. He said that I just want to run further testing on you computer for different components to make sure that everything would work properly and pin point any issues. I was delighted with that option. Anything would help at this time especially someone who is willing to help. The first test that he ran was to for the hard drive and he said that since it failed the test the first time could be because the software update glitch and did update correctly which would make the test faulty and be negative. As I sit with finger crossed the test came back as a pass test that my hard drive was not the issue and that the update was the cause and that I did not have to buy a new hard drive. I was happy that the computer was ok but I lost information. All of the updates were done in the store and everything works fine now. If I was not persistent about my gut feeling then I would had left out thinking that I had to pay for a new hard drive that I really didn't needed. Now I can invest that money in a external hard drive to start backing up my information. Lesson learned by I'm still on the fence about things but I hope all is well. I really went through a lot. No help or no service was not an option that I was taken.  I hope that it helps.

The path C:\users\owner\appdata\local\apple\apple software update\bonjour64.msi cannot be found. verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package "bonjour64.msi" in a folder from which you can install the product bonjour.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on 25 June 2010. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • TS1367 after a software update, my macbook pro was supposed to restart, since then, it doesn't restart & there is nothing i can do, any help please ?

    Hello,
after a sofware update, my macbook pro was supposed to restart,
since then the start up process begins & after few seconds, the mac goes back to off without starting, what's wrong ?
    thanks for any support,
    Amine

Let me add a little bit of details,
after the software update, I was asked to restart my laptop,
while doing it, I got a message error :"some files couldn't be updated".
Since then, everytime I start my macbook pro, I have the grey apple & screen, with a kind of updating bar (grey as well) at the bottom,
when the bar reaches approximately 30 to 40%, it disappears & the laptop swiths off.
Ihave tried to start on a safe mode, it doesn't work either,
    thanks

I have a PC computer and an i-phone 4S.  I set up an i-tunes acct online w/ icloud.  After a recent update my PC started receiving an error message on start up.  It says "AppleSyncNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found".  It also says, " The procedure entry point smlTextreaderConstName could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll".  I click on OK and it moves on.  It doesn't seem to affect my computer, but it's annoying.  Any ideas on correcting this?

UPDATE - (Made a second post so it'd be clearer)
I uninstalled Office 2003, then iTunes, then all of the associated software (Mobile Device Support, Apple Update, Quicktime, EVERYTHING)
Reinstalled Office 2003, then Office 2003's Service Pack 3, then all Microsoft Updates for Office 2003. Then I configured a blank Outlook profile, no data other than the IMAP info for my .Mac/Me account. Then I downloaded (didn't used my existing copy) of iTunes 7.7 and reinstalled. Sync'd phone. Changed MobileMe settings. Told it to sync contacts and calendar with Outlook. It warned me because it was the first sync. Told it to take ALL of the MobileMe data and replace the data on the computer (which was blank.) NOTHING showed up in Outlook. When I tell it to sync Contacts with the Windows Address Book, it works fine.
In Conclusion, it still won't sync with Outlook, when it's set to Sync with Outlook I still get the annoying MAPI errors. So I switched to to Sync the Contacts with the Windows Address Book, and I'm backing up my WAB file now with my nightly backups.
I suppose we'll see if it gets fixed when I format/reinstall on Vista Ultimate in the next month or two. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open and willing to try them.
On a completely unproductive note: Despite my love for Exchange, I hate MAPI.
