After downloading photos from camera ... having problems sorting them ...

Once I have downloaded an assortment of photos from my camera, I place them into separate folders according to the category I have named. In so doing, the photos are in the album, but remain in the import file which for some reason did not do so whenever I performed this task. What now occurs, is when I go to remove the photos in the imported file, it also removes them from the album.
I am confused with what I am doing to cause this occurrence. I used to perform this task successfully when in the import screen without losing the photos once I placed them in their respective albums.
Need help to sort myself out. I am a stickler for categorizing my photos according to the occasion. It makes it so easy to retrieve them whenever I want to send them to friends or to groups.
Hope I can resolve my confusion in what I am doing wrong.
Thanks!

I used to be able to sort my imported photos without the aforementioned occurrence. It appears to occur using a new camera.

Thank you, Terence, for the information. I'm going to mull this over because what you have mentioned is rather abstract to my diminishing grey cells. When I returned to iPhoto, in the Photos' List, the photos I had categorized were in tact and none of the other photos were included.
Much for me to consider when importing photos and my placing them into folders but forget about 'trashing' what is in the Import file, because as you say, this is only a shortcut.
Again, thanks for shedding some light on my dimly lit understanding of iPhoto and its importing photos.

Probably -will your card mount to the desktop? If not you will need a card reader - select the photo(s) in iPhoto and export to a desktop folder - mount the card to the desktop and drag the photos to the corredct folder on it

  • IPhoto won't download photos from camera.

iPhoto won't download photos from camera. iMac 10.6.8; iPhoto updated. No Name comes up, says "downloading," but color wheel only goes round and round. I've let it go on for 20" to no avail. Only way to get out of iPhoto then is to Force Quit. Tried downloading pictures through a Card Reader with same results.
Same camera, same procedure for last 5 years and never had this problem. Thanks for any advice.

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Problems downloading photos from camera to iPhoto

All -- I'm running iPhoto 6 on a Mac Mini with the latest version of OS10. I have a Canon PowerShot G3 and shoot 4-megapixel JPEG photos, and AVI movies. Downloading photos from the G3 to the Mac is slow, and deadly slow (as is 15 minutes or more) when there's an AVI movie or two mixed in with JPEGs. I've had to abort several downloads when they just flat out stalled.
Today when downloading a total of 58 JPEGs and 6 AVI's I got an error message - "unreadable files". 51 JPEGS and 3 AVIs downloaded fine. 7 JPEGS and 3 AVIs didn't download. The error message says "The following files could not be imported. They may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data."
Any help you all can offer would be much appreciated.

Isn't technology great? The more you learn, the more you need to learn more.
Have you viewed the iPhoto 6 tutorials? http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/iphoto/new.html The section on Organizing, "Add Ratings, Titles and Comments" could be helpful.
Click on the little blue i on the lower left of the iPhoto window, and the Info Panel should pop up. Select a picture, and it shows the info for it. Select a film roll's name, and you can see and edit the info for the whole roll. Click on the roll's title in the info panel to highlight it and you can type in a new name. You can edit the date of the roll this way, and it will affect how your rolls are listed in the library. The dates "from" and "to" are generated by the dates of the items within the roll. If you type comments about a roll they will be shown below the roll's name in the library when the roll is closed. I like to keep rolls that match my camera cards, but they can be very large. So I use comments to list the events contained in the roll, so I know which roll to open when I want to find a specific photo.
If you view your library in Film Roll view then you see the rolls' names with a little triangle to the left. As in the Finder, clicking on the triangle to make it point right conceales the contents of (closes) an item, while clicking on it to turn it down reveals the items inside the item.
Now the hard part - all those dates. If the dates and times are totally wrong, I would use iPhoto's Batch change to correct them. However, only iPhoto will recognize this date change, because it won't correct the real problem, which is that the EXIF info is wrong for those pictures. There are ways of changing EXIF info which involve downloading other programs, running batch changes, and re-imprting into iPhoto. I've never done it, but I searched the iPhoto 6 forum for "EXIF rename file info" and restricted by user name Old Toad. Try this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1734147&#1734147 and note Old Toad's last post about PhotoInfo.
If you don't mind about the EXIF, then you can just redate them within iPhoto. Select a series of photos from the same date, then go to the Photos menu and select Batch Change. Select Set Date. Type the correct date and give a time for the first picture. To force iPhoto to maintain the same order within the series, check Add 1 minute between each photo. This way, although the times will be wrong, at least they will have the correct chronological sequence. (Or type in the times manually after the batch change if the order is not correct.) I always do this with rolls of actual film I get processed at a store. The photo CD I get never has the correct dates or times, so I add these to at least get them to display in my library in the correct order. As far as I know, you have to run a seperate batch change for each date that you want to change to. Unless you have a series with one photo for each day and wish to check "Add X Days between each photo."

  • After downloading photos from my camera I am now unable to view previous photo albums

Upon receiving my new iPad 3 I sne t photos from my previous PC via email to enable me to save them on the iPad. I created them into various albums and since then I have photo streamed photos from my iPhone.
then I downloaded photos from my husbands phone using connector and ever since then I can only find his downloaded photos and those photo streamed ones. I cannot find my other 4 albums and am desperate to view them again as one album is of my daughters recent wedding.
can anyone help me as I am rather a novice in using computers etc....but loving the iPad

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IPhoto will not longer download photos from camera or memory card

Ok, I have iPhoto '08 and a Nikon D70 camera. This morning I went to download photos from the camera and it was slower than usual to connect to the computer. All the photos show up as usual but when I click to import them I get a message and it can't download any of the photos because they are an unknown format.
I took the card out of the camera and put it in a card reader and got the same message.
Neither the camera OR the card reader showed up as a device when I ran the image transfer app.
Using the card reader and the Finder, I was able to copy all the pictures to a folder which I was then able to import into iPhoto. After than I used the camera to reformat the card and took a test picture and got the same error messages.
    So, any ideas?

I found a solution in a couple of other threads. The main problem is when you start iPhoto from the dock, the unix process is owned by root, and not as it should be, by you. If you start iPhoto from the Terminal by entering /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/MacOS/iPhoto, iPhoto is able to import the images.
I don't believe that starting the applications from Terminal is a good solution, so I looked for another - reinstalling Leopard seems to be the best option, and it actually works. I can now import images to iPhoto again.

  • Cannot load iPhoto Library nor download photos from camera

Upon reading most of the forums I have come to the conclusion that I have screwed up iPhoto Library by moving and deleting photos. Now Iphoto, verson 2.0 will not load the library nor download photos from an attached camera. It just remains a blank slate. I just did a clean install of OS 10.3 and downloaded all upgrades. Everything works except iPhoto. Reason I did all the didling with the library was that I have 25 Gigs of photos and my hardrive was too full. I still have over 15 Gig of photos on the drive and cannot view them. Prior to the Clean install of OS 10.3 Iphoto worked fine. I have purchased an external hard drive and now think I must do the following:
    1. Format the new hard drive
    2. Move the present iphoto library to the external hard drive. I have to do this as I still have no room on my hard drive. Move the old library out of picture folder.
    3. Open Iphoto. Now it supposedly will ask me where the library is. I will show iPhoto where it is on external drive. Question, iPhoto does not recognize the library now so why should it when I show where it has been moved to?? Do I just move iPhoto library folder or the complete Picture folder?? Also when I hold down the shift and option keys while opening Iphoto to rebuild the library why should it as iphoto stil does not recognize its library??
    4. Somewhere on the discussions I read that I have to hold down option key to get a new iPhoto Library. Can I do this and after creating new library have Iphoto download all albums from old renamed iphoto library??
Sorry for all the stupid questions. These photos are kids, grandkids and great grandkids, family pictures, etc. It would be devastating to me to loose these. Any help would be appreciated. Than ks

    theolddog:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You will not be able to resurrect your old library due to the renaming and moving of files within the iPhoto Library folder. You'll have to create a new library and import the full sized image files from the old library folder. Here's what you'll need to do:
1 - open the old iPhoto library folder and type Command-F (find). Then set the following search criteria.
    a. Name contains ".jpg"
    b. Size is greater than 100 KB.
2 - in the search window will be all of the thumbnail files that do don't want to import into the new library. So select them all and drag to the trash.
3 - launch iPhoto with the option key depressed and create a new library.
4 - use the File->Import menu option to select the old library folder and import all of the image files contained therein. You won't get any of the small thumbnail files since you removed them earlier.
That should do it. You'll probably have more rolls then you had before so you'll have to consolidate photos into fewer rolls. In the future Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. That's the cardinal sin of iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?

  • Missing iphoto pics after downloading photos from iphone

I downloaded photos from iphone to iphoto and now the only photos that appear in the iphoto library are the ones I just downloaded from the iphone, not any of the earlier ones. There is only one iphoto library to open.  I was able to get all of the earlier photos back by option clicking the library but now the ones from iphoto are missing, despite there only being one iphoto library to open.  How do I unite them?

This is likely the case.  The only time I see double libraries is when I "Show package contents".  Then there is a "library" (which has all the pics) and a library.photo and a library6.photo.  Both look exactly the same as the real photo library but neither can be opened.
I can retake the pictures - it's only 20 or so now and recent too - I just wish I knew what had happened so that it wouldn't happen again!
Thanks for all of the help!

  • Problems downloading photos from camera

    (I'm not sure I'm using IPhoto 5, I have an IMac G5.)
I am having great difficulty downloading pictures from my digital camera. I have an Olympus camera which I connect to my Mac with the help of a Jessops Universal Card Reader. The card is an X-D one. When I connect the card reader via the USB port, IPhoto opens up but when I attempt to download the pictures I am stuck with the multicoloured "wait" icon. Do I need to clear anything out? I had a similar problem with AppleWorks that was resolved by another user -- see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=822524&tstart=0. Any ideas?
    IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi DM,
Do you have any large movie files on the camera card. This has caused the problems for some.
Try using Image Capture and see if it will let you download the contents of the card. The following is an explanation of why I use Image Capture instead of iPhoto to download my photos.
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • I am having difficulty downloading photos from camera....iPhoto seems to be doing nothing, shows pictures on screen, but unable to proceed from there.

I am having trouble downloading photos to iPhoto from camera.  iPhoto recognizes pictures, but does not offer  the option to download/import.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • After downloading photos from a camera, and deleting them from the device, "iPhoto Quit Unexpectedly", photos were deleted from camera

Does anyone have any suggestions to find these photos?  Can't believe they were deleted from camera, but are not in "Last Import".

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • "Get photos from camera" advanced dialog sort order

    Hello All,
I'm having a problem with the order of the photos in the advanced dialog when there are photos from more than one date. The import dialog orders the photos by decreasing date and increasing time. For example, a series of photos with the date/times (in order of being taken):
    10/20/11 11:30 PM
    10/20/11 11:31 PM
    10/20/11 11:34 PM
    10/21/11 01:03 AM
    10/21/11 01:04 AM
    will display as:
    10/21/11 01:03 AM
    10/21/11 01:04 AM
    10/20/11 11:30 PM
    10/20/11 11:31 PM
    10/20/11 11:34 PM
Now imagine say one or two thousand photos taken over three or four days and wanting to rename them. Right now I have to load the group associated with each day, and then keep adjusting the index number so that the naming scheme will make any sense. This was asked in the previous post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2981895#2981895 and has not been answered. The photo order really makes no sense to me. Surely there is some way of fixing this?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Chris Jones

OK, here is the situation as I see it.
Took another round of pictures on day two.  Used the same method as outlined in post # 7.  The day 2 photos show up first and then day 1 photos.  This is in the same order as the pictures are shown on the card, with the newest pictures at the front.  So if using advanced rename it starts the rename at the first picture on the card and works down, in this case newest to oldest.
Now I took the same card and pictures and used the method I always use.  Short date + custom name.  In this case since you are not renaming the pictures, it uses the camera name and therefore the pictures are labeled from oldest to newest.  This is because the camera labels in an advancing sequence starting at the first picture.
So the easy way to avoid the problems you are addressing is to download the pictures to Bridge using the camera name, use the correct sort order, or manual sort to order pictures, and then do a batch rename.  As the batch rename starts at the first pictures and works its way to the last picture in sequence.
If you feel this is awkward for your workflow I would suggest you submit a feature request to have a sort order on the photo downloader for some future update.  If enought people submit the same request it may get done.
Let me know if this answers the question satisfactorily.

  • Downloading photos from camera to iPhoto

Each time I go to download new photos, my iPhoto program wants to import ALL the pictures on the memory stick, instead of just the new ones. What am I not doing? What should I be doing? I don't want to erase the pix from the memory because I use them. But I don't want to re-invent the wheel each and every time I go to download. My camera is a Cannon. The Cannon software recognized the new photos and would ask me what I wanted to do. Anybody.....?
    radish

    radish,
It's been reported here by many folks that iPhoto 6 often fails to ignore the duplicates upon import from a camera.
Since Canon cameras don't mount on the Desktop, you can use a USB card reader. Remove the card from the camera, pop it into a reader, and it will mount as an external hard drive. If iPhoto brings up its +Ready to Import+ dialog, ignore it. Then do File > Import to Library, and a navigation window will open where you can preview the files on the card and select only the files you wish to import. It's similar to importing with Image Capture, with the advantage of importing directly into your iPhoto library. If you have a photo printer with camera card slots, it may be used as a card reader.
You are wise to not allow iPhoto to delete the photos from your memory card after importing. There have been too many reports of failed imports followed by total deletions.
    Regards.
