After downloading software updates, I am locked out of G4 running 10.4.11

This problem occurred when I restarted after taking the latest software update from Apple (online). As I recall, the three recommended updates were for ITunes, Safari, and Security. When my computer restarted, I got a Log On screen, which I have never seen before (I am a solitary user). I typed password, and the Log In box wiggled and then the cursor sent me back to retype. I did this several times to no avail. I then used my original installation disk to reset the passwords (just in case I had them wrong) for both users and the system admin (just in case). When I restarted, I was presented with the same screen and got the same results. I've done this four or five times now, and I cannot get past the log On screen. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am in a panic!

Before doing an Archive and Install, it might be worth seeing if you can access your data from another Mac using FireWire Target Disk Mode:

If you can, perhaps you can retrieve your data and stash it on another drive before doing the Archive and Install. I am nervous about doing an A&I without a backup, just in case something should go wrong. I think you also need enough space on your hard drive for the previous system folder.
And of course you will have to do all the updates after the A&I.

I didn't originally recommend a Safe Boot because the Safe Boot didn't work for me--I still got the screen shaking its head "no", but it may be worth a try. Safe Boot does disable some things, and if the corruption is in something that has been disabled, you might be able to get to your desktop.

    It would help to know versions here.  I'm guessing your update put an older version of something into a place where a newer version of something iTunes put in there existed.  Updating an earlier OSX version to 10.6.8 is still only updating to system software that was issued several years ago.  If you are running some slightly newer version of iTunes issued subsequent to 10.6.8 and you just updated to 10.6.8 you may have put in an older version of something iTunes uses.  Anyway, I'm guessing here until we know exactly what you did.

    Today after downloading recommended software updates to my g5 imac, when i went to put a cd into it it wouldnt go in and upon checking my hardware overview my cd/dvd driver has completely disappeared like it was never there!!     My wife's Iphone 4 had the latest software update.  After the update, it asked to back up to the ICloud.  Doing that it asked for an Apple ID, and I used mine, as she hasn't purchased anything from ITunes, and didn't have an ID.  After the setup, it had merged our contact list.  I want to know how to unmerge our list.

    Of course it did if you signed her into your account. You can only unmerge them manually, one by one.

    I'm unable to download software updates for my iTouch 4.1 in iTunes.  I have iTunes version 10.5, Windows 7.  i've tried numerous times in the past and always get the same error message.  I'm now experiencing problems with some of my apps. and I've attempted 4 times in the past 2 days to upload version 5.0. It goes thru the whole download (761.61 MB), says "processing file", then closes out and I get the following message:
    "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "xxxxx's iPod". The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are current and your network connection is active or try again later. Err = .3529." 
    I ran diagnostics and it said everything was fine. 
    Also not all the apps. on my iTouch are in my iTunes library even though I've synced my iTouch numerous times since I've purchased the apps. with my iTouch.  All the apps on my 2nd screen are on iTunes, but none of the apps. on my 3rd screen of my iTouch are in iTunes. 

    Did you check your security software settings? Troubleshooting security software issues
    iTunes has to be able to contact Apple during the download of the software and the update process.

    Download iTunes using the tab at the top of this page. Then run the update with iTunes closed.

    After the last update that was pushed out by Adobe, my Acrobat 9 Pro will not generate a PDF file from; [right click], Combine files into one PDF multiple files chosen in the explorer.  A message pops up asking if I want to run repair.  Answering in the afirmative results in another message stating files are missing.  And we are back at square one.

    What is the exact error?  Else you could always reinstall your software.

    10.7 was horrible unstable so I waited until 10.7.1 and tried it again. Well I have to say that it is still a defective OS. I am reverting to Snow as we speak from my carbon clone copy.. This is really the worst OSX I have ever used. It gives me random Kernel panics for no reasons, unstable airport and hundreds of small issues that are just not necessary. For instance I can't use QuickTime in Lion to trim a videoclip ( the UI goes mad and the trimslider becomes inoperable and hangs the Player window ) while in Snow it is no problem. Itunes gives me crackling sound when the equalizer is turned on, Graphical glitches in Photoshop, games crashing, Preview.app not working with some pdfs, so I need Adobes reader which I never used before.. It is definately not ripe for mass usage. Might 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 fix it, but not yet.
    * and just for the records : the hardware is absoltely ok. Because in Snow it works as it should. ( So many Lion fanbois are talking : "your Ram is defect", defintely NOT. - Lion is defect! ).

  • Motion 3 still freezing after after MBP Software Update 1.1

    I have just started to use Motion 3 with my new Hi Rez 17" MBP and had a couple of occasions where Motion would freeze completely with the only option being to turn off the MBP and reboot it. I checked the Motion discussions and found that a lot of people had been having trouble with Intel MBP's and Motion after software update 1.0. I was pleased to hear that software update 1.1 was supposed to fix the issues and duely downloaded and installed it.
    However, in the past 3 hours I have been trying to work on a motion project (a pretty simple one at that) and motion would have FROZEN AT LEAST 6 TIMES. Disappointed to say the least!
    Has anyone else with a similar MBP experienced the same issues with Motion 3 after installing software update 1.1? As it is Motion is next to impossible to use and because the app is not crashing I can't even send off a report to Apple.

    Hi Jose,
    Although we don't seem to be any closer to a fix, its good to know I'm not the 'Lone Ranger' on this issue.
    A bit more info, in case somebody has any ideas. Since my post, at the suggestion from the guys I bought the MBP from I ran the Extended Hardware Test on the OSX install CD in case I might have some issues with something like the MBP's memory (I am running the full 4GB of RAM by the way). It came up completely fine.
    Another thing is that I noticed today that there is a new software update available - the 'MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0'. It doesn't say in the notes that it has anything to do with any motion fixes but I found the naming convention a bit strange. Maybe this is normal but just because they stick 'MacBook' in front I would have thought Apple would have given a different version number considering MacBook Pros have already had a software update 1.0. I was wondering if I try to run software update 1.1 again whether this might have the desired effect but I think I am probably clutching at straws.
    Any other feedback is greatly appreciated.

    OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Lion systems will have the necessary printing software already installed, or will automatically download and install software when the printer is connected or configured. Do not install software that came with the printer as it may be out of date, and do not connect the printer to your Mac yet. Follow the instructions that came with the printer to unpack, install ink or toner, and insert paper.  Finally, use the instructions in this article to connect the printer to your Mac.
    Make sure the printer model is listed in Printer and scanner software, which is a comprehensive list of all printer models that have compatible software for OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Lion.
