After editing raw in external editor, where does Aperture store that image?

When I have Aperture send a raw file over to Photoshop for more editing, Aperture creates a PSD (or TIFF) and saves it to its internal library. So, since my raw images are imported into Aperture as referenced files (I want to maintain my image library on external disks) how do I get Aperture to create, and save, that PSD (or TIFF) to the folder where the original raw file is stored? I want to do this because sometimes I want to access that PSD file from within Photoshop. As far as I know, PS cannot access the PSD that resides in Aperture library.
Antonio

Unless things are changed with Ap 2.0, the round trip file is stored in the Aperture Library. I too have complained about this exact issue. I have Ap 2.0 but have not bother to try it out.
My workaround is to export tiff/jpeg from Ap to the folder that has the referenced master, then open and edit the file using PS (or whatever else) and save there. Go back into Ap and import the edited image in the same location as the original referenced master version in aperture (project/album) and stack.
Not great but it works. Each round trip from Ap to external editor using psd or tiff adds 40~70mb of file size into the Ap library so it can balloon rather quickly, if you edit using PS often.

  • How to edit RAW in external editor (photoshop)

    Aperture duplicates the version and gives me a psd file open in photoshop. What I want is the Adobe Camera Raw editor, that's why I shot it in raw in the first place. Any workaround other than pulling the master out of aperture and doing it manually?
    Also, anyway to disable the annoying metadata hud that pops up on rollover of previews in aperture?

    Here is an idea I have been playing with for the new CS3 version of Photoshop.
    1. Locate the RAW files you want to process outside of Aperture's Library. You can do this by storing your masters as referenced images and using Aperture's 'Show in Finder' command.
    2. Open the RAW file directly with Photoshop CS3. Choose the 'Open as Smart Object' check box in the ACR settings dialog box. Save the resulting file and import that newly saved PSD back into to Aperture.
    3. From inside Aperture you can open this file using the 'Open with External Editor' command. Once you do this you will have two masters of the same images. Unstack the masters and delete the one that you imported--saving the one with the bulls-eye badge. That second one that you saved can be opened directly to Photoshop and re-adjusted using the ACR plug-in any time you want.
    This workflow gives you nearly all of the benefits of directly editing the RAW file using Aperture's controls. It would be a bit slow to do it with a 1000 images. I am thinking about ways to run this using Automator and Applescript.
    Is there a reason that Aperture's RAW processing doesn't work for you. I find that for supported cameras it is the equal of Photoshop's ACR and better in some regards.

  • A Better Way to Edit RAW with External Editor?

    The settings for the external editor will only let you edit the images in Tiff or PSD, I want to edit the RAW image itself. The only way I know how to do that is expert the master, edit it and then import it back in.
    This is a hockey workflow and frustrating especially when I then do a quick fix in Aperture itself and then want to edit the image again externally in GIMP.
    I just want to edit the RAW image in my external editor when needed, yet do my folder management within Aperture.

    I was afraid of that...
    I don't use lightroom or Photoshop. I used to be a Photoshop user until the cost became so prohibitive. I have since switched to using GIMP as my eternal editor, it's native files are .xcf (musch like the Photoshop .PSD) but Aperture doesn't support .xcf files and I doubt they ever will since GIMP is a free open source tool, rather than a commercial product.
    I have been playing with 3.01 now for a few days and finding that the heal tool and burn and dodge tools seem to be improved. Even though in GIMP they were destructive to the original RAW file those items were noticeably better in the external editor.
    Also, any extreme editing still needs to be done outside of Aperture, so I will take a Catapult or just keep my current workflow....

  • Where does Aperture store PhotoStream Masters

    I had PhotoStream enabled for some time Lion, until I realized it wasn´t very clear what was happening with my photos, and was breaking my import workflow. I then disabled it. Now, when I try to import photos from my iPhone, it thinks some of them are duplicates, since they were imported with PhotoStream. But the PhotoStream folder has disappeared from Aperture. I´m trying to manually import photos and I´m trying to figure out which ones were imported with PhotoStream so that I can import those manually. Does anybody know where those photos are stored, or a list of them. I´ve found some in the trash that I didn´t throw, but I´m hoping to find some sort of list detailing which ones were imported with photostream and when. Any help would be much appreciated.

    All your PhotoStream imports should be tagged with the keyword "Photo Stream", once they have been imported. While they are still waiting to be imported, you can recognize them by the metadata tag "Project Path" set to "Photo Stream".
    So a smart album  or  a search with the rules
         keyword is Photo Stream    or
         Project Path is Photo Stream
    should find them all.

  • Where does aperture store picture location?

    I am trying to use the slide making tool using the map background. It appears that if I have identified the location with a google command and not filled in the location on the assign location command, the slide comes up with a nonsense location. So I am trying to fix my images. The problem is I can't figure out away to select a picture and then see whether or not there is an assigned places rather than just a pick from google. Where can I find in the metadata the location?

    Hello Bill,
    I am trying to use the slide making tool using the map background.
    Are you talking about a Slideshow using the "Places" Theme?
    The problem is I can't figure out away to select a picture and then see whether or not there is an assigned places rather than just a pick from google. Where can I find in the metadata the location?
    That part of Aperture has been added only recently and does not yet integrate very well with the overall Aperture design - imho . You cannot see the places in the Metadata panels in Browser View - the IPTC location there does not correspond to the places. You will only see GPS, if GPS metadata have been assigned.
    You can search for "Places" using a "smart search" or a "smart album" with "Add rule -> Place is" or "Place includes", if that is of any help, or browse all your places in "Places View" with "Meatdata -> Manage my places".

  • Where does my saved file go after using photoshop as external editor

    Okay, I understand that when I have a 30MB picture file and edit with photoshop afterwards, I click on Save and back into aperture i'm left with a 175MB picture (bigger or smaller sometimes), but my question is this:
    Since i'm working with all referenced images that have been stored on my external hard drive, after i make the edits and the file size explodes, does aperture save that large file in the aperture library, or to my external drive?
    I keep my aperture library file on my computer, but the images on an external drive.
    Should I make a new library file and store that on an external drive also?
    The whole point of using referenced images is to save space on the main computer, but if it's saving a file that's 6 times larger onto my computer instead of the external drive, it kind of defeats the purpose right?
    Thank you all for your superior technical wizardry and support! I appreciate everything!

    You can test this for yourself, but I just tested with a new Project, importing to Aperture to remain at the currently location, editing a photo with Photoshop. The Tiff that Aperture first created for PS to edit was created in the original folder, and not in the Aperture Library. The edit, when Saved, was made to that new copy in the original folder location, and thus in the external location.

  • Can't edit pics in external editor

    I can't open anything from my iPhoto library up in Photoshop. For instance, if I Control+click an image in iPhoto, I see that there is an option Edit in External Editor," but it's all un-clickable and gray rather than the normal clickable black. How can I open my iPhoto pics in Photoshop?

    And note that after editing in an external editor you "save" to return the photo correctly to the iPhoto library and update the iPhoto database - do not save as which will create a new photo and not be a part of the iPhoto library until it is imported
    Also after configuring an external editor you can set the edit in back to in main window and normal editing will be by iPhoto - right clicking brings up the additional options including the external editor

  • How to pass RAW to external editor (after an iPhoto edit) ?

    Let us suppose that I edit (in iPhoto) a pic imported in RAW format. If I am not satisfied with the result I may think that an external editor with more edit tools can allow me to edit the pic to my taste.
    What I have observed is that BEFORE any edit I can request edition in an external editor and this gets the original RAW format (in spite of the existence of a JPEG version of the pic), but AFTER any edit what the external editor gets is a JPEG. That is surprising if one considers that the ability to work with RAW is precisely to be able to start afresh with the original capture data.
    Altogether I am left with the impression that the help panels about working with RAW leaves too many points in the air.

    What you need to do is Control-click on the thumbnail and select the Reprocess RAW option. Then you'll be able to get the external editor to work with the RAW file.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. • New Photo in OS X option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!

    Hi
    I have just updated my iPhoto to Photos in OS X and i have noticed that the option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!
    Its now a pain to send a photo directly to my favourite photo editing software.
    Ross

    Thanks Terence
    Totally understand being a new app and not an update.
    So i'm a ammeter photographer and i like the way i can view my photos in iPhoto and i'm happy with the new App for this also, however i like to edit my photos in PS from time to time and i shoot in raw. As i can no longer select edit in external editor from the photo app i tired to drag a RAW photo to PS but this didn't work. i then tried dragging to desktop but this then made a jpeg so i loose my raw advantage. I would like to be able to find my original raw photos easily so i can edit them in PS.
    Hope that makes sense?

  • Where does portal store the username after a successful log in?

    We have an intranet application, we use the portal security and login screen, etc.
    I have written a stored procedure which requires two parameters. One of them we already have at the time we need to call it. The other is username. All we need
    to know is how to get the username at the time we must call it. Where does portal store the username after a successful log in for the particular session this user is logged into?
    I tried using the following syntax,
    When i log in using PORTAL30 then it returns,
    SQL> select portal30.wwctx_api.get_user()
    2 from dual;
    PORTAL30.WWCTX_API.GET_USER()
    PORTAL30
    But when i logged in using some other user i.e.rtemps it returns,
    SQL> connect rtemps@mpdb
    Enter password: *******
    Connected.
    SQL> select portal30.wwctx_api.get_user()
    2 from dual;
    PORTAL30.WWCTX_API.GET_USER()
    PUBLIC
    Why does it return PUBLIC, instead of RTEMPS?
    rtemps is a Database user though.
    How do i test this script for portal users?
    Also my application is a multiple user application.
    So at a given time, there could be more than user logged in, also there could be more than one sessions of the same user logged in.
    what happens in that scenario?
    Thank you,
    Kalpa

    still not working..
    The first page my user goes to log in, is
    http://159.225.218.59/pls/portal30_sso/portal30_sso.draw_custom_login_page
    when i look at this stored procedure, it makes a call to the following procedure,
    PORTAL30_SSO.wwsso_app_admin.ls_login
    and passes a parameter ssousername
    From here my user is directed to the home page, which is built using the portlets, the URL for the same is,
    http://159.225.218.59/servlet/page?_pageid=255,257&_dad=portal30&_schema=PORTAL30
    This is where i want to pass the ssousername, so as to keep track of what the user is doing.
    Question 1: where does this page physically reside, or how do i add the parameter ssousername to this page?
    I have 1 HTML PORTLET, on this page, and the code behind this looks like,
    <!-- PL/SQL Language Definition Section -->
    <%@ page language="PL/SQL" %>
    <%@ plsql parameter="i_pagenum" default="1" %>
    <body>
    <table width = 760>
    <tr>
    Link 1
    </tr>
    </table>
    In the above code, when they click on link 1, it calls a database stored procedure(rpt_param_prov), which is also a psp page.
    In here, i want to pass the parameter ssousername.
    e.g. the link should look like,
    Link 1
    Again this is a HTML portlet, so i don't think it will recognize the psp tags.. so that probably might be another issue.
    But this is what i want to accomplish. So i can use the user who logged in, for my audit trail application, which will be inserting a record in a database table, everytime, the user runs reports that are being clicked.. like link 1 in above example.
    I don't understand why this is so hard.
    When i tried
    portal30.WWCTX_API.get_user, it still brings back PUBLIC or PORTAL30_PUBLIC.

  • Where does Keynote store the audio files in a presentation

    I have slides with individual audio files. When I import or attach the file and then save the presentation, it changes the file name to .mov extension. Where does Keynote store those files? I would like to edit the saved Keynote version, but cannot locate the .mov file!

    I'm not exactly sure of what you want to do, and I'm not sure if my answer is the most efficient, or even wholly correct, but here goes ...
    When you save a KN presentation (a KN doc) which includes an audio (or movie) file, you can save it 2 (3?) ways: either without or with the file being copied into the document, or as a "package". In a test file I just made with 3 white slides (title, slide with song, second slide with song) the results:
    without: 3.8 MB; with: 9.4 MB; package: 9.4 MB. The essential difference, aside from size, is that if saved without, if you play the KN on another machine which doesn't have those audio files on it, the audio won't be there. To make the KN truly portable, you must save with, or as a package. (I'm not too sure of the concept of package in KN. In PP, saving as a package means you end up with a folder, which contains the PP and the media files, each as separate entities. Saving a KN package yields not a folder but a file, which looks to me identical to the result achieved by simply saving with, and seems to behave identically, as well.) The audio file you used will in any case remain where it was before you used it, but, if the KN doc is saved with, or as a package, a copy of it will go into the KN doc.
    But then, what do you mean by "edit"? What do you want to edit, the KN presentation, or the audio file within it? If the former, I don't understand where the problem might be. If the latter: using the QT inspector within KN, you can change the length of the audio file (where in the song it starts and stops), whether to start it on click, or automatically after transition, or to loop it. If you wanted to do some other, more exotic audio editing, like reverbs or other effects, I'd do that on (a copy of) the original audio file (found wherever it was before) with another app (GarageBand, for instance), and then I'd replace the first, non-edited, version of the audio file in the KN doc with that.
    Have I missed something?
    Message edited by gbdoc: maybe someone will chime in to clarify the difference between "saved with" and a "package"

  • FontBook - where does it store font informations?

    As I've posted here before, I've been massively frustrated by Leopard's FontBook over and over again... so much so that this afternoon's longish post was deleted by the modgods here (they say "Your post was removed from Apple Discussions as it contained feedback or feature requests" when they mean "You used foul language to describe Apple products"
    Anyway, I've now installed Leopard on an external disk with one, and one purpose only: to get exactly the font files that are part of OS X 10.5.
    Having done that, I
    - deleted everything in /Library/Fonts
    - copied all the original Apple system fonts from the external disk
    - changed owner group and access data for each font resource to be exactly like the virgin 10.5
    - deleted the FontBook pref file in ~/Library/Preferences
    - deleted all ATS cache files
    - rebooted
    Now when I open FontBook, (of course) it still displays all sorts of fonts from before this open-heart surgery operation.
    So my questions are:
    - where does FontBook store its font informations?
    - how does one clear, delete, wipe out, nuke or kill these informations... whatever is necessary to not have Zombie font descriptions lurking in FontBook?
    TIA if anyone has an answer to enlighten this murky swamp!

    Maybe this is interesting to someone: after my 6th or so cold reboot this morning, and Spotlight having started its ritualistic "Indexing" my external FW harddrives (for the 6th time in 3 days...), my Console is filled with hundreds of this:
    23.11.07 02:34:35 com.apple.ATSServer[940] 2007.11.23 02:34:35.85
    23.11.07 02:34:35 com.apple.ATSServer[940] A fatal error was detected using fontiD 131127 while processing a message (id: 11) from pid=425.
    23.11.07 02:34:35 com.apple.ATSServer[940] Font Info:

    23.11.07 02:34:35 com.apple.ATSServer[940] Name:
    23.11.07 02:34:35 com.apple.ATSServer[940] No name in cache
    23.11.07 02:34:35 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ATSServer) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
    23.11.07 02:34:45 com.apple.ATSServer[941] FODBError: FODBRemoveFromAnnex - Got called to remove an annexIndex that does not match what is in the font
    23.11.07 02:34:45 com.apple.ATSServer[941] ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Now ATSserver is throttling and re-spawning, seemingly forever.
    Since this OS experience can't possibly get much worse -- I guess even Windows would be better at this point -- I'll go and delete all ATS caches (again) as well as FontBook's cache files, and reboot (again).
    Oh joy.

  • Where does iPhone store backups in Mac and Windows?

    Sorry I could not find the answer elsewhere.
    Where does iPhone store backups on Windows and Mac?
    Can the location be changed?
    Thanks!

    Mac:
    Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    (Note you may need to turn on show hidden files and folders to see it on Windows)
    As far as I know, you can't change it.

  • Where does EBS store customized LOV elements?

    Dear All,
    We are developing a report on EBS r12 >> Payables >> Payments screen.
    The Functional Consultants Team added a DFF ( view_inv_pay.DESC_FLEX ) with only 1 segment and its description at the Invoice Payment block level ( VIEW_INV_PAY )
    which synchronizes with each matched row in this block.
    The values of the DFF come by selecting from an attached customized List of value that the Functional Consultants Team had populated its elements using data loader.
    We have a requirement to display the DESCRIPTION of DFF segment in the report not its actual value.
    So the question is:
    Where does EBS store the data related to a customized LOV ?
    And how to join between the LOV’s under laying tables and the below report tables
    ( AP_CHECKS_ALL AC , HZ_PARTIES HZP , AP_SUPPLIERS PV , GL_DAILY_CONVERSION_TYPES GDCT , AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL  AIP , AP_INVOICES_ALL AI ) to display the DFF description?
    Since, only the actual DFF values are stored in AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL table.

    Dear Sandeep,
    That is great, but what about the joining condition.
    I know that i can join by the segment value in the AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL table
    to be like below:
    SELECT ffv.flex_value, ffv.description
    FROM fnd_flex_values_vl ffv, fnd_flex_value_sets ffvs , AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL API
    WHERE ffvs.flex_value_set_id = ffv.flex_value_set_id
    and API.SEGMENT1 = FFV.FLEX_VALUE ;   -- Assuming that the actual DFF value stored in SEGMENT1
    AND ffvs.flex_value_set_name LIKE '&value_set' But for tuning issues is there any an alternative to previous condition?
