After Effects CC Rendering Issues.

Hey guys,
I'm rendering DSLR footage out of After Effects for editing and grading. I have every clip in it's own comp with the Neat Video denoising plugin applied and some film grain, and I'm rendering every comp individually as DNxHD. The problem is that each comp seems to taken significantly longer to render than the one before it. For example, the first comp I rendered was about 11 minutes long and took a little under 2 hours. The next was only about 10 minutes long, but took 5 hours. I've even walked into the office in the morning to find comps on pace to take 10 hours. I'm rendering off a 2013 iMac with 24 GBs of RAM and a 3.5 GHz i7 processor rendering onto a 4 TB thunderbolt G-Raid. I have 18 GBs of Ram allocated to AE, and mulitprocessing enabled. Any ideas? I'm assuming there's some aspect of memory management that I'm not using properly. I should also point out that when I start rendering, the fan on my iMac goes into overddrive, but when I come in the next day everything is whisper quiet. Could my computer be overheating a scaling back it's work load?

Here's a workflow idea:
You can import a Premiere project into AE and it makes a composition with each cut on its own layer. So you could import your edit into AE and maintain all of the cuts. (As mentioned, you won't have transitions in place, but a dissolve is easy enough to create in AE.)
There are scripts out there (like VideoCopilot's Trim Compose script) that will make a composition for each layer (each cut, in this case) and you can then render each cut out with your noise removal.
You could then import those files into Premiere to carry on with your XML to Resolve workflow and you won't have rendered hours of noise removal out of AE that you'll never use.
Another option is to skip putting each clip into its own composition and simply render the whole thing out and then grade that. Alternatively, you could precompose whole scenes in AE and render those out.
Another, entirely different thought, would be to use Color Finesse in AE to do your color grading. But, if you're familiar with Resolve, you might prefer that.

    Hello,
    First the computer specs:
    Mac OS X Vers. 10.6.6
2x2.66 Ghz Quad-core Intel Xenon Processor
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 Memory.
    2x 1T Hard Drives
    After Effects Version CS4
    Problem:
I am working on something that should be very basic and easy, but I can't even render a preview for it without the program either crashing or it taking 60 minutes to render about 3 seconds.  I Created a text that I am turning to sand and dissolving off the screen using the Particle Playground effect.  This is what seems to be bogging down the processor or ram so much that it won't preview or render in even close to a timely matter.  I was wondering if this is a common problem or not.
With the amount of processor and Ram size, I thought that turning on the multiprocessing would do the trick, but there was no change.  In the preferences window it says that the Total After Effects Memory usage is 26.87 GB.  I have 2.09 Allocation per CPU.  I am at a loss and have not found a similar post, so I am asking for help since this project is due in two weeks and this effect is key to the opening of the shadow sequences generated with after effects.
    Thanks all.

Sorry, file attachments have been eliminated from this forum due to abuse & security issues.  You would need to post with another host and provide the link here - even via Yousendit would do?
How many particles are being created in your comp?  PP is an absolute render hog, and a nightmare to use, frankly.  You may wish to investigate a more modern and efficient particle option, like Trapcode Particular or Trapcode Form.  Here's a tutorial on using Form to do a text-to-sand effect.
Other AE plugins that may assist in "shattering" a layer are CC Pixel Poly or Shatter.

  • After Effects Error: rendering error while writing to file...Output Module failed - 1610153646

Hi – I’m currently working with someone who is running After Effects 5.5v10.5.0.253 on a PC which is running Windows 7 Ultimate. The computer has just recently been built and the software is newly installed. (ie. a couple of weeks old, max). Up until now, we have been using After Effects with no real issues. But tonight, we started to see the following error message, when trying to render something out:
“After Effects Error: rendering error while writing to file xxxxx. Output Module failed, the file may be damaged or corrupted -1610153646” – displayed during render, which meant the render failed.”
We started to review forums to see if we could come up with a fix and tried a few of the more common suggested solutions, including:
Make sure there are no third-party plug-ins or Windows incompatible elements installed - as it’s a pretty new install, we haven’t added anything except out-of-the box elements.
Clear the render queue – did this, no change.
Reinstall Quicktime – did this, no change.
Reinstall Creative Suite – also no change.
Check the default program to open .mov files is Quicktime – Quicktime was already the default.
A bit more detail about the machine...
    Ram is 32gb
    GPU is GeForce GTX 660ti
    250gb soild states
    2tb raid drive
Any help would be much appreciated. This is now happening on all AE files, even files that worked fine earlier in the week. Other than the AE and QT reinstalls mentioned above, nothing new has been added to the machine this week. On a deadline – so a quick response would be amazing, right about now. Thanks.

Hi Mylenium- thx for the quick response. We have have tried a bunch of different settings. AVIs work and we can do image sequences too. The only major problem seems to be with Quicktime files. While I appreciate your suggetion to convert with AME - this is only a workaround. Was really hoping for a solution that will fix the problem in After Effects? Heard rumor from a few friends in the biz, that this is a major bug... if possible, some feedback from Adobe product devs or someone with a technical background would be great! Thx.

  • After effects error: rendering error while writing to file. Disk full.

    Hi,
I tried to render a video in AE CC 2014, with RGB + Alpha as I wanted to keep the background transparent (rotoscoped) so that I can then use it in Premiere.
I chose to export in Quicktime, with uncompressed 8bit.
After it rendered it for a little while I had a window pop-up saying
After effects error: rendering error while writing to file "E:...blabla". Disk full. The file may be damaged or corrupted. (-1610153463).
I read a thread posted in the forums but i do not understand the solution provided there.. What is a POD??
I have a Win7 Ultimate, x64. Plenty of disk space, and 16 Go ram.
Please help, I canoot go further in my project with this bug...
    Jaywaii

Is the drive you are rendering to formatted FAT32 by any chance? If so you can only render up to 4Gb for one file. Try rendering out a TIFF sequence instead. Litte tip - push the LZW compression tickbox in format options for a lossless compression, this will keep you file size way down.

  • After Effect error: Rendering error while writing to file

    Greetings,
I'm a beginner and am starting to learn most of the basics but every time I try to render a specific type of composition, I get this massage:
After Effect error: Rendering error while writing to file "C:Users\Admin\Videos\720p.mp4".Unknown Error! (-1610153453)
    RENDER SETTINGS:
    LENGTH: 8min. and 30 sec

    CODEC: mp4
    RESOLUTION: 1280 x 720

OUTPUT LOCATION: C DRIVE (22GB FREE)
I got Windows Ultimate 64-bit and Adobe After Effect CS5.5 64-bit (both on C drive) installed in my laptop.
When I first installed after effect, I rendered a part of the whole composition (AVI, 720p) and it worked but after that when I rendered with
format H.264 it showed this massage. Then I tried to change it back to AVI. and rendered. again the same massage.
My C drive isn't full, I have 22GB SPACE AVAILABLE.
And when I try to save it on D (114GB free) or E drive (33GB free), It shows me the SAME MASSAGE.

  • After effects multi processing issue

hi i installed after effects cc2014 on the following machine:
    dell precision t7500
dual zeon six core with hyperhreading
    36 gb ram
    ssd disks
    nvidia gtx590 gfx card
ruing 3 dell 22 inch monitors
on first install multi processing was fine was able to render multiple frames on multiple cpus ect,  i ended up having some heat issues with gfx card so removed it, and installed a nvidia fx 3700 card, after that after effects takes loads longer to load, and when i go to preferences multiprocessing it shows 0 cores used to render multi frames.
i have set aside 2 cores for other apps, and each of them gets 1.5gb of ram, leaving:
22 cores (with hyper threading) available to after effects and 33 gb of ram .
i have tried many different configs but it will not use multi cpu. i switched off hyper threading, so there would be 12 actual cores set aside 2 for other apps and gave them 1.5 gb ram each to use so i should have had: 10 cores and 33gbs of ram left for after effects. i expected to be able to use 8 or 9 cores for multi cpu utilization, with at least a couple of gb for each. but still no multiprocessing available.
do you think i will have to re install after effects? hope i dont as i have loads of plugins installed so dont realy want all the hassle, i had same problem in the past when i upgraded to the gtx590 card but i was doing a new windows install on new drives so was not much more of a hassle once new install was done multi processing worked ok again.
any idea from othe who had same issues?
    thanks
    alun

You shouldn't have to reinstall aftereffects, just delete your preferences and start from scratch. Multi processing is a very sensitive beast. Some footage, many codecs, and some of the effects do not play well with multi processing. If your projects contain any of these incompatible elements then multiprocessing will not work effectively.
Without knowing anything at all about your compensation or the footage used or the codec you are rendering to it is impossible for us to give you suggested settings.

  • When I add my composition to the Adobe Media Encoder from After Effects, it renders out incorrectly?

Why is it that when I add my composition directly from after effects to the adobe media encoder, it renders out of the adobe media encoder incorrectly? By that I mean the video comes out a little scrambled- parts of it overlap other parts. Is this an issue with 'dynamic link'? Did I do something wrong? I'm working in CC.

I also don't understand what you are saying. What do you mean by "parts of it overlap other parts"? A screen shot might help.
What were your render settings in AME? (Format, Codec, data rate, etc.)
What is in your AE comp? If footage, tell us what format, codec, etc. Tell us what effects were used too.
What exact version number of AE CC are you using?

  • Optimizing After Effects Performance/ Rendering Speed for large projects

    Problem:
My after effects is extremely slow and i want to use an external harddrive  to increase the speed temporarily until i can afford to change the internal hard drive. i also have other video production software like Cinema 4D, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Cheetah 3D, etc.
Macbook pro with the following specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB (Available space approx 91.GB)
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Action:
i have set my Disk Cache to use the 500GB Gtech firewire external hardrive in After Effects Preferences
    Issue: After effects still slow
Recommendation From expert: Change Internal Hard Drive to 512 GB SSD HARD DRIVE
Question: How can i optimize After effects with the current hard drive space i have right now?

Thank you. As i stated earlier i am new to after effects and video editing in general so this is a learning process for me. i have also realized that i have soo much going in the layer that i need to clean up and prerender as you said. Also one of the biggest mistake i am making is with the "composed individual lyric effect" i created. As i said earlier, i masked the lyrics to audio spectrum and choose the mp3 song in other to make the effect active, but since i am working on the lyric composition individually i did not crop the yellow bar in the workframe to the exact part of the lyric that applies to the song. hence leaving me with 100+ of words with each having the full length of the song in each individual composition i created in the master layer, in addition to the spin fx effect that i have not prerendered. After effects is trying to render alll these together basically. The extremely slow rendering procesing time arose  when i combined all individual lyric effect into the layer while also implementing typography tricks like in the same layer.
Basically, my question is should i reduce the frame work in each lyric composition to the exact section of the song that applies, and will this improve the overall rendering time in the master layer and solve my problem?
Also should i peform my typography skill like position, scaling rotation and so on in the individual layer/composition of the lyric effect i made in order to further save rendering time in the master layer?

  • FCP After Effects and RAM Issues

    Hello,
Recently I have been working on a 1280x720 video project using both FCP 7 and After Effects CS6.  I have an early 2011 MBP running 10.6.8 (I'm not a fan of Lion).  It's a 2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7.  I have been having significant lagging issues with playing back videos in AE and eeven more significant playing them in the timeline of FCP.  It has made editing a royal pain.  Exports also take a long time.
I had 8GB of RAM but last night, expanded to 16GB.  Since then, I have noticed no increase in speed at all.  Not opening programs.  Not opening files, not exporting files, and not playing back in either program.  Maybe I am misunderstood as to what the RAM was supposed to accomplish?
My question is, what can I do to fix this?  Do I need a new Hard Drive?  Was the RAM upgrade a waste of money.  Maybe someone has some suggested settings for Memory and Cache for the two programs?
Thanks in advance for any help
    Chris

    Chris:
To open an application faster, install a faster hard drive.  If you go with an SSD drive, you should notice a huge improvement in how quickly your applications launch.  If you just upgrade from a 4,800 RPM or 5,400 RPM drive to a 7,200 RPM drive, then you'll see a modest increase in launch time.
To export files faster from AE, you'll want faster processors (assuming you had enough RAM in the first place). AE tells you at the bottom of the application window how much RAM is being used.  While you had 8GB of RAM, you might have seen 42% being used.  Increasing your RAM to 16GB would only reduce that percentage to 21%.  It would not speed up the render.  A faster hard drive can help as well, but not as much as faster processors.  Switching from a USB2 thumb drive to your internal drive would boost render speeds.  Even if you were working at 1920x1080, it's unlikely that you'd need more than 4GB of RAM. If you happend ot be working at really large Composition sizes or have artwork that is really large (like 18MB still images), AE will tell you exaclty how much more RAM you need when it displays an "insuficient memory" dialog box.  If that was happening, then you'd want more RAM.
To "speed up" the playback of video, you need storage media that can maintain the sustained data transfer rate of the file being played.  (Unfortunately, more RAM doesn't help for this.)  1280x720 rendered to the Animation codec at best quality and at 8 bits per channel requires 3.5Mb per frame (not including audio).  At 30 frames per second, you're looking at 105Mb/second.  eSATA was recommended earlier and that's a good option; however, you mentioned that you have a 2011 MacBook Pro.  As such, you probably have a Thundebolt port.  An external Thunderbolt drive should be able to maintain 105Mb/second with overhead to spare.  If you have to use your interal drive, switch from the Animation codec to Apple ProRes 422 or Apple ProRes 422 LT.  You'll see a good reduction in storage space requirements and your internal drive should be able to maintain the data rate required of APR 422 and APR 422 LT.  If you need to have Animation versions of your renders, use Compressor or Adobe Media Encoder to convert the rendered Animation movie to a H264 file and then play that when you need to view the video.  Also, _always_ be mindful of how full your drive is.  The closer the drive gets to being over 85% to 90% of its maximum capacity, the more likely data transfer rates are going to drop (that is, the drive will not perform as fast as it would have otherwise).  If you happen to have upgraded to a hybrid drive or SSD drive, you probably won't have to worry about reaching drive capacity (other than worrying about setting overlfow volumes in AE).  You can throw the fastest processor available and the most RAM available at a high data transfer rate movie, but if the storage media isn't fast enough then the storage media isn't fast enough.
Regardless of your OS (32bit vs. 64bit; 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, 10.6 or 10.8), all of the above factors apply.
I'm curious, do you really hope that I choke?

  • Can I work on a different project in After Effects while rendering another (AE) project in Media Encoder?

(I'm using the current AE CC 2014)... I've tried twice to start working on a project in After Effects while a DIFFERENT project is rendering in Media Encoder. Both times it (Media Encoder) hung up/crashed. I thought the point of a separate encoder program was so I COULD work on another project in AE at the same time another project was rendering in Media Encoder.
Am I doing something wrong, or do I just have to WAIT for the encoding in Media Encoder to finish before I can do other things in AE?
[I tried searching through help. If I it's there... I just missed it.]
Thanks (in advance) for the help.

  • After Effects CS6 Performance issues

Hello all. Well, got three new mac pro 12 core systems all running 65 - 128gigs of ram with Quadra 4000 GPU cards, up to date drivers, up to date AECS6 and dedicated 500 gig solid state drives for global cache. Their all set-up according to Adobe specifications/instructions. And, no we are not working with the ray trace activated in comps.
We have all noticed that performance on some projects is painfully slow. In fact some projects which run fine on an older MacPro with AE CS5.5 creep on the new boxes running CS6. So slo in fact we have had to abort and jump to the older machines to get things done in a timely manner. Simple things like typing text, navigating the GUI and scrubbing the timeline are frustrating. We are not new to mac boxes or After Effects. We have all been using AE since version 4. It also seems like projects with a lot of footage in them or a lot of stills that have higher resolution dpi really seem to bog. Something is definitely wrong here. Soloing doesn't seem to help, reducing resolution doesn't seem to help and have tried about every preference option to free up performance.
If anyone else is experiencing these same issues, I would love to hear about it or possible solutions. The global cache is really nice when all hardware/software is hitting on all cylinders, but something seems a miss. Not getting why there are performance issues on some projects and basic operational uses like text.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

  • After Effects Error: Rendering error while writing to file... Unable to open file.(-1610153459)

    Hi there,
As the title states, this is the error message I get ONLY when trying to render .mov files.
I have posted here before with a similar problem related to quick time files.
After Creative Cloud does its own updating, I can no longer render .mov files.
I have been through the trobleshooting list for QuickTime file errors, none of that works.
This is now the 3rd time that I have reinstalled AE CC.  On a clean install, everything works fine, but after updates it starts bugging out.
    ALSO
I cannot install the lates AE update...12.1.
CC says that I there are no new updates.
The manual update function within AE is greyed out so I cant click it.
I downloaded the entire patch and tried installing but I get another error stating that 'Udates have been surpressed by the Administrator.'
I am the Admin user, and I have tried running the patch as admin too.
I am getting extreemely frustrated with this CC package.
    Please....please, someone help.

So....its been a few peacuful days.....but here I am again....with the same issue.
There have been no new Windows updates, quicktime updates or CC updates that I know of.
The problem however seems to be quite random.  Sometimes it doesnt  happen if I restart After Effects, while other times it occurs even If I restart the whole machine.
    The best part though:
I contacted Adobe technical support for the patching issue as I am still running 12.0
The technician remotely takes over my machine and proceedes to uninstal After Effects.  Then he tries to log onto Adobe's download site only to find out it is down (not quite sure how this isnt known to him before the fact).  He says the site will be back up after an hour and asks that I wait while still connected.  I do so.
Sure enough, the site is back online, but the tecnician is not responding to my communications even after a direct email to him and an aditional 30 minutes of waiting.
I have no option but to cut off the remote control and reinstall After Effects......again.
I count my bleesings and carry on the next day with normal work.  I have a product that can at least render the format I require.  I brush off the notion of getting the latest update.
So here I am today, with a 'brand new' quicktime issue.
I contact support again and explain the problems, but I am told that the technical staff are only online in 5 hours.

  • After Effects CS4 project issues from English to French

    Hi All,
So to give a quick summary of what our issue is, when a french AE designer (Using French AE) opened the project we had created in the UK (on English AE) he was getting errors mentioning that the xyz position preset was unavailable.  After spending a lot of time on the support line to Adobe they told me that the issue is basically that the x, y, z position preset which is part of the animation we created apparently DOES NOT translate across from English language After Effects over to French language After Effects (not entirely sure why, might be that this is code based and that the French code and English codes aren't the same).  Adobes only suggestion was for the french people to download a trial of the English language version of After Effects CS5 and make the amends and export using that.
Now being a stubborn so and so, I wondered what might be the cause, I'm guessing that the expression code is language specific, which led me to wonder whther it could literally be translated?  So in english the expression is:
    value + [effect("Separate XYZ Position")("X Position"), effect("Separate XYZ Position")("Y Position"), effect("Separate XYZ Position")("Z Position")]
Does anyone have French AE installed that could give us a clue to what the equivelent french expressions would be?
    Many thanks
    Mike

You should not need to take care of anything else. The internal references, functions and variable names are always English. Only the UI-centric stuff will change, that is the effect name and its control parameter, i.e. ("Slider") will become ("Curseur") in French. You could also avoid this by simply using the control index value instead of the control parameter, so ("Slider") would simply be (1), as it's the only control element. now that I think of it, just yesterday I saw an internationalizer script at AEScripts com that might be of use to you, too. If you have something odd, simply post the code and I'll have a look (or our resident Frenchmen here on this forum, Sébastien Perrier) .

  • Exporting from After Effects (field dominance issues?)

    Hi all,
I created a FCP DV/NTSC sequence with field dominance set to none (I'm working with still images, this improves the quality a lot). I then export that sequence as a quicktime movie file and import that movie file into After Effects.
The problem is after I'm done working in After Effects, I can't export a quicktime file without it looking really poor quality. When exporting, I preserve all the original FCP sequence settings, except the field dominance settings(doesn't seem to be an option in After Effects for this?).
So pretty much I am trying to get a sharp picture when exporting in After Effects, so I can take it back into FCP. Please assist.

Your workflow is quite limited by the DV NTSC sequence. If your sequence is all stills, you are not necessarily tied to that setting at all. Do you need to output to a VTR via FireWire ultimately? What is your final output?
A better sequence choice might be DV50. You would export a QT movie, current settings. You don't actually export from After Effects. You render by adding your comp to the Render Queue. Good render settings would be DV50 (this would not require rendering in FCP), Animation, or perhaps ProRes 422 HQ if you have access to it. You would choose not to render fields.
If it's all stills, it would be better yet to simply start in After Effects.

  • After Effects CS5 rendering with 48 cores and 96 GB of RAM

My company is trying to put together some new machines for our render farm. Currently we are considering building a system with 4 12-core CPUs and 96 GB of RAM. Theoretically this would mean that After Effects could render 48 frames simultaneously, but I've never heard of anyone running AE on this many cores. Does anyone have any insight on whether or not this would work well?
