After Effects chunky/laggy interface?

Hello everyone,
I'm working on after effect / pc since years now, and i've always encountered this "issue" : chunky interface.
Point A is :
The more expanded the interface is (i mean in terms of screens' surface) and the more elements it contains, the more chunky it becomes.
For exemple, I'm used to have my viewport and all the panels on screen 1, and one big panel with the timeline on screen 2. in this case, the interface is chunky. And it goes worst as I multiply the layers in the sequence. Which can be really really disturbing and production breaking for heavy composition.
Point B is :
I was accepting that as a... weakness of after effects, till I did some test on a Mac. And *boum* that doesn't behave that way. That was an imac, with a not powerfull graphic card (default imac gfx).
Point C is :
I have experienced that along the 3 office's computers i had, as on friend's / collegues windows computer
To make it clear : create a new blank project. Set the timeline panel on the second screen as a very low size/scale/screen's surface.
Scale it up, scale it down and see the "display refresh rate" of the resizing.
Now create a layer (anything) and dupplicate it like 150 times.
Rescale the timeline panel to min-max window size multiple times & you'll see what i mean.
To make it simple, in the first case you will have like 30/40 fps, in the second you will have like 5/10 fps. And that become annoying since the interface become laggy.
The problem here is not about processing but about the speed of redrawing the window/panel and it's elements.
SO can anybody tell me if using a solid quadro can overwhelm this windows 2d terrible management weakness?

Szalam thanks a lot, I'd really like to have your feedback. Everything depends from you now Could you please also specify which quadro are you using?
Todd_Kopriva I'm glad adobe had noticed that and had worked on. And I really hope that those improvements are significant, since this kind of behaviour (from the software) is becoming really critical...
especially for a product defined as a professional solution. And especially regarding the fact that it's only about drawing 2D.
Be sure that I will get the trial version as soon as it will be available and give feedback.
Mylenium I could... understand the approximative handling on multi-desktops for public/gaming card. Not for professional card, especially when the overprice is justified by the support and the reliability/optimisation of the drivers.
As said upper, everything depends inter alia on the Szalam answers.

  • After effects EXTREMELY LAGGY

Hey guys, this is a huge problem I really hope you guys can fix. So I am on AE CS6 Version 11.0.2.11 and I am working on a project in a composition with some effects, but not NEARLY enough to cause this much of a problem. So, with these effects, every time I try move a keyframe, or adjust the CTI, or change a single value, After effects lags and freezes for like 1 minute and then continues on normally just to present me with the same issue. So basically every time I make edits in my composition after effects freezes up.
    Now for the specs....
    - MacBook Pro on OS X Lion 10.7.5
    - 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor
    - 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
    - Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
In the Media disc cache section of preferences, I have 500 GB alotted on an SSD 1TB external drive (Yes I have tried emptying disk cache)
Everything in the discussion has worked extremely well on my machine, and the problem came up just recently.
    -OpenGL is disabled
These are all of the effects included (please note I have used all of the without problem):
    -Twixtor
    -3d camera tracker
    -Trapcode Shine
    I am also working with 29.97 Fps 1280 x 720 dimensions. The file is a .mp4 with a H.264 and AAC codec.
I really don't know what the problem is. If you are reading this PLEASE take a shot at fixing this. I will be happy to supply ANY more information you guys need so just ask! Thank you for your time.

I'd do two things: First, I'd transcode the mp4 footage to quicktimes in ProRes 422 (if you have it), PNG or Animation.  Then I'd do the Twixtor work & render it out.  After that, you should be good to go.
You're asking AE to do A LOT of  computing by working with a highly7-compressed codec like h.264, PLUS frame rate conversion.
It also wouldn't hurt to turn off multiprocessing temporarily if you're using it.

  • Problems with After Effects/Premiere CS3 in Vista

I have read through a bundle of solutions to this problem and haven't found anything that has worked yet. I ran After Effects and Premiere Pro on Vista up until two days ago when it refused to open. When I try to open Premiere, it gives the message "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attemp to save your current project." When I tryo to open After Effects, the firts try does nothing. The second attempt will open After Effects, but all interfaces are missing and all the dropdown menus are grayed out. When I close it, it says After Effects has crashed, contact support, error 0:42. I have uninstalled/deactivated and reinstalled, run codec sniper, removed xmi preference settings and nothing works. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you run the CS3 Clean Script? If not, please do so before attempting any reinstalls. More info on such stuff here and here.

  • After Effects - Problems with rendering - please help :(

    Hello everybody,
i am sorry about my bad english, but i hope    you can help me somehow. I pruchased the Productions Pro Premium from Adobe some time ago.
I created some Layers in Photoshop CS4 and  animated them    in After Effects CS4. After that, i rendered a raw file out and imported it    back into After Effects CS4 to save render and preview time. Then the    problems started... my After Effects became laggy and didnt respond for    3-4Seconds. After starting rendering, my PC waited for 10-20 minutes until he    started to render... and longer and later i unchecked the box Write XMP data    in the render settings and the problem has gone. Do you know what i did    wong or why that happens? It has something to do with my losless rendered    .Avis and XMP Metadata... the strange thing is, that this doesnt happens always and with every clips, but maybe there is an anwser for me...
I got a W7 Os and my PC is very strong with    an i7 cpu and 6gbs of ram..
I hope you can help me..

  • After Effects not starting at all, stops at "initializing user interface"

I installed CS5 master collection trial version on W7 64 bit machine.
After Effects  doesn't load at all (it stops at "initializing user interface") and it's  even impossible to kill the  process in windows (never had this problem with any app). I can shut down all  the other processes, like dynamiclinkmanager.exe  or Adobe QT32  Server.exe, but aftereffects.exe  just won't stop and I need to restart my PC.
Also  Premier crashes after I click 'new project', or try to open something,  but the application starts and I do see the whole GUI.
I updated Quicktime, as well as my video card  drivers. All  other apps in the master collection seem to work fine. Uninstalled the  whole thing twice (with the remove preferences option), cleaned the registry with a comodo system clean up utility,  reinstalled also twice- nothing. Tried with the firewall turned off and  quick time completly uninstalled - nothing changed.

  • No Refreshed Interface Design in After Effects CC 2014

Sort of an odd question, but how do you change the interface design in After Effects CC 2014 to be the new "Refreshed Interface Design"? Like with the blue text color, borders, and different look panels (as seen in the first image linked). I updated to Adobe After Effects CC 2014 yesterday, and for some reason, my interface design has not changed at all. Is there somewhere in preferences where I can change this? I would appreciate any help, thanks.
What it is supposed to look like:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/whats-new/_jcr_content/main-pars/image_1.img.pn g/ae-interface.png
What my After Effects looks like:
    http://puu.sh/dfYbm/aa366e60fd.png

Your second image shows After Effects CC 2014 (13.0). The new UI comes with After Effects CC 2014 (13.1).
I'm curious about how, exactly, you installed the software, since you should have gotten After Effects CC 2014 (13.1.1) if you installed from the Creative Cloud service.

  • After Effects Interface

    Hello everyone,
Im not sure theres anything i can do about this but i thought i'd ask.
Is there any way to make the controls in after effects bigger? its like re visiting the websites of 2001 where all the designers made micro buttons and text. this is a real drag and takes a lot of focus and energy just to interface with this application. im not too concerned about the clutter, just the little "weenie" buttons and controls. adobe finally addressed this issue a little bit with illustrator and made an option of making bezier controls bigger when you rolled over them but after effects remains horribly and unnecessarily small. the animation paths are horendously small and you have to go in like a freaken brain surgeon just to click on an end point. also, with so many variables to a layer, why not changes its color in the timeline when selected so you can get a quick read as to exactly what variable your tweaking and the associated keyframes in the timeline?
i dont know, im thinking this is just to micro noodle for me. maybe its because im new to the program and im trying to look at all the interface elements at once but it just doesnt seem that they did a very good job at organizing or focused much on the user interface experience.
    /end rant

Umm, at what screen res are you running? Not to fire back at you, but indeed all you do is ranting about. Sure, AE has some UI issues like mask vertices always appearing to small or drowning in the color of the mask, but eh, sometimes you can't see squat in MS Office, either. The rest of your comments is just not of any real value to write anything about it - millions of other AE artists apparently can use the program successfully every day and they can't all err on the wrong side. The rest is a matter of personal preference. Do I like drowning in the "grey sea"? No, so I always ramp up the UI brightness, use really saturated label colors and get rid of those cheap and shabby gradients. Do I get crazy about the timeline being filled with tons of small switches and stopwatches? Not really, as I've been using 3D programs al lmy life na lists in tehir graph editors and outliners are just as crammed. Do I get annoyed about inconsistent font kerning/ spacing in the expression editor? Sure, that one drives me crazy, but then again, I'm one of a kind and there are millions of otehr users who never create expression code with 100 or even more lines... So on balance, the UI is okay as it needs to cater for a wide base of users. Consider that for a moment, do some comparisons with other apps and you will see, that it is not that bad at all. Just if you look around in compositing/ motion graphics apps like Motion, combustion, nuke or Fusion, you will see many small buttons and hidden options that always seem to be in the wrong place. That's just the way it is and if you cannot find a way of getting used to such inconsistencies and inconveniences, then your need to use any such program must not be that great at all. Artists have been living with such compromises all the time, yet it has never sto9pped many of them to really produce outstanding stuff. For the rest:

  • After effects CS3 locks up at Initializing User Interface

I am doing an install for a school lab and they are requesting both CS3 and CS4. Is that possible under Mac OS 10.5? I have managed to get everything to work except After effects CS3. They didn't need CS4 after effects so i removed that and CS3 after effects still doesn't work. I removed the prefrerences in the users Library folder and allowed after effects to re-create it and I am still unable to load the program It Freazes at Initializing User interface. I have tried uninstalling CS4 and CS3 After effects still didn't work. I just uninstalled CS3 as well and re-installed it again and i am still getting the same error. Any suggestions? I might Remove CS3 again and use the script that is on the net to remove all CS3 data.

What Macs are we talking about? There are some issues with some iMac models that seem to occur with specific configurations of said iMacs. A regular occurence is some 2007/2008 series models with ATI cards not launching AE at all or going into a freeze. Users have reported that completely re-installing OSX fixed these issues, so I can only assume it's a flaw in the factory disk image used to pre-format and pre-configure those machines upon delivery. Other than that I'm not aware of a specific cause, but who knows. If you can provide more info, I'm sure something can be clearly made out as the culprit.

  • After Effects not working. It hangs before getting to the interface and I can't upgrade neither!

I juust bought adobe after effects for the creative cloud. I can't get it to work. I installed the Afx through the app manager and launch it and didn't work. It freezes. Then I though it was because I had a previous version trial installed in my computer. The Cs 5.5. I downloaded the Adobe cleaning software and cleaned the HD. Then I reinstalled everything and now stills not working and won't patch neither. What should I do?

Nobody can tell you anything without system information. The most common issues why the app won't launch are GPU issues or DynamicLink problems, but again, we really can't know without more details. Provide system specs and the crash info and while there, also comb the articles on my site. It is, after all, the After effects error Code Database...

  • How to Link After Effects Buttons/Interface to Scripts?

    Hey, guys.
I'm trying to write a script that displays certain messages when a caertain button is pressed in After Effects itself (not buttons in my script). I was wondering if there was a way to, for example, display "This is a button" when I click on the render button. Does anyone know if this is possible with the tools provided in ExtendScript Toolkit CS6?
    Thank you.

Yeah, I don't think it's possible, even if you were to write a C++ plugin with the SDK.  You could definitely detect when buttons are pressed with you wrote a plugin, or even a ScriptUI plugin.  As for attached event listenters to core AE ui elements, I cannot think of a way to do that off the top of my head. . . if I think of something that could work, I'll definitely post.  Maybe you can be more specific as to what you are trying to acheive if you could do that.  Why do want to detect clicks on ui elements that are part of the standard AE ui?

  • Serious resolution issues with After Effects CC (2014) on Windows 8.1 Pro on Dell Precision M3800 laptop??

My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
    Any help will be appreciated!
    k.regards
    Ramon

Hi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?

  • I am new to After Effects and Motion 5 and I have a question

    Hello there,
I am currently working on a personal side project for a family member. She would like me to make a video with recorded audio and pictures from the 1920’s for my grandmother. I would like to give the parallax and 2.5D effect a try but as I never used After Effects or Motion before I am a little overwhelmed.
I have about 80 images to animate. Right now I am in the ‘Photoshop phase’. I am going through each image and separating the foreground, mid-ground, and background, into separate layers and saving the .psd files to eventually bring into Motion 5 (or After Effects) and animate.
    After seeing this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVrYyX3bHI8
I really wanted to animate the images I had in a similar fashion. I really loved how they seemed to move and know that I can accomplish this appearance with the pin tool in After Effects. After seeing this video however, I continued looking into the 2.5d effect and found this movie for Motion 5:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmxlm2nkVLA
I bought Motion 5 because I thought the interface seemed more user friendly to newcomers (like myself), the effects were similar, and because I couldn’t afford to pay for After Effects every month.
But now I am kicking myself. Motion 5 is lovely and I do like the camera effects but I don’t think I can accomplish the ‘puppet’ effect with it like I can in After Effects. Does anyone know if it is possible? Is there a plugin for Motion 5? Can I send my .psd files into Motion 5, set up the timeline and cameras, save it, and then move it into After Effects and then use the pin tool to manipulate the images and layers?
I have read that some say it is hard to move Motion files into After Effects? If this is the case, could I save the Motion file, open it in Adobe Premiere, and THEN open it in After Effects and play around with it?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advanced.

2.5D is fairly easy to do in Motion... that's the good news. The bad news is: if you don't know what you need to do to accomplish it, it's practically impossible to do easily or well.
The first problem to overcome is perspective, and the other problem is parallax.
These two tutorials (by Mark Spencer) will give you all the information you need dealing with moving Photoshop Layers in Z-space. Even though the point of the tutorials is a "fly through", the same information applies to creating 2.5D. Just animate the camera laterally (sweep) instead of dolly.

  • After Effects CS6 - Very slow workflow

Hi everyone, my first writing in adobe forums. I've contacted 3 adobe support agents, but I didn't get much help from them. Recently I switched from PC to Mac Pro, having Adobe Production Premium 5.5 for Windows and now upgraded to Adobe Production Premium 6.
First I tried a trial of After Effects CC and I was surprised how slow it is. Now I'm using AE CS6 full version and it's a bit better, but still pretty dang slow. (The video I made for adobe support explaining the problem is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jsZZpH0vYU )
To try to cut long story short. In the video adove, I've created couple of text layers and couple of shape layers. Made them 3D. Added a camera too. When I move the camera, everything is refreshing extremly slow. It's like you're having 100 3D layers and very busy scene,
and actually it's few most simplest 3D layers. The agents from adobe support told me to switch to half rez, or draft mode etc. But the problem is, I do not want to work in half rey, draft mode or something similar, with my configuration it should work pretty normal. Never
had these kind of problems in AE CS5.5. I tried everything, updated the software, updated my Mac OS, disabled global cache, even disabled multiprocessing etc. Btw, rendering is okay.
Is this the way CS6 is made? Is it supposed to be slow? Because, literally I got an answer from the agent that AECS6 is designed like that, in other words, to be slow
I really have no idea anymore how to make this work. I would like to get back to my lovely 5.5, but I only have license for Windows. If you guys could help me, I would really appriciate that.
    I use:
    * Mac Pro
    * 2 x 2,4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    * 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    * ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
    * 2TB HDD
    * 2 x Apple LED Cinema Display 27"
    * After Effects CS6 - 11.0.2.11
    * Mac OS X 10.8.4
    * I haven't had this problems ever before (using ae for quite some time)
    * At the moment no 3rd party plugins installed
    Thanks!
    Mirza

You'll have to get used to creating Ram Previews and using AE's interface in the right way. You should really go through the getting started materials on the home page and take a look at the FAQ. AE is a layer based pixel calculating beast that will do a lot more to a movie at 60 frames per second than Photoshop will do on to a still image. After Effects is essentially Photoshop for movies with a lot more options.
If you want to smoothly drag through the timeline and playback multiple cuts with simple transitions and two or three layers then use Premiere Pro. If you need to use 20 layers and 60 effects to create a stunning composite or motion graphics effect then you're stuck with rendering at just about any price point.

  • After Effects CS6 and Premiere Pro CS6 Long Startup and Application Hang

    Problem:
After Effects and Premiere Pro CS5.5 and CS6 are very slow to start all of a sudden.  Around 5 minutes to get to/by the intro dialogue box.  For AE, the majority of the time is spent on the "initializing user interface." Then, if I can make a comp, and even a layer inside that comp, it will "Hang" if I attempt to open AE's General preferences for example (no preferences window ever comes up).  This "hang" is what the Event Viewer in windows calls it, with the faulting module being afterfx.exe.  Premiere is not much different.   It makes it to the new project window fast, but after setting project parameters and creating the first sequence, I can't get into the preferences either and the application hangs.  It is important to note that if I have another application open, like Chrome or Firefox for example at the time the application hangs, they will freeze as well.  As soon as I kill the Afterfx.exe process, they come back to life.
I have read nearly all threads on the subject, and am struggling to find a solution:
Deleted preferences folder under my username's appdata.
Turned off Firewall (network traffic from dynamiclink, qtserver, etc was allowed, but what the hay)
ran windows system file checker/malwarebytes/rkill/rootkit detection.
checked for windows compatibility checkboxes under the file.
    Uninstalled Wacom Tablet drivers
    Disabled Aero
Started with ctrl-alt-shift to delete pref.
uninstalled video driver and replaced with one 6 months ago.
uninstalled, reinstalled, and tested various quicktime versions back to version 7.69
    moved plugins folder
moved opengl's plugin out of the folder temporarily
Disabled all 3rd party codecs (xvid was the only one installed and for months)
    reinitialized default directshow filters
checked for adobe font list (none found) and removed any fonts from 1 month ago to present.
used msconfig to selective startup without other applications/services running.
Uninstalled all adobe products, and reinstalled.
I performed all of these in a systematic manner, trying to solve the problem.  None have fixed the problem.
So it doesn't seem to be a network issue, a codec issue, a plugin issue, a driver issue, font issue, or conflicting application.  Any thoughts?
    System Info:
    PC Windows 7 pro 64-bit SP1
    Core i7 - 960 24GB ram
    AMD Radeon 6750  v12.10
    Adobe CS6 Master Collection

Who's says that Microsoft can't debug?
I used msconfig, first disabling startup items, -same result.
Enabled all startup items, disabled all non-microsoft services - AE worked!
I re-enabled each service in turn until AE crashed.
The fault was related to an item for a video streaming device I have in my house.  It was Monsoon-multimedia's Vulkano Service.  Sometimes under the old name of Hava, this is an app that acts like a sling-box to send my Cable TV to my screen.  It does load a couple of virtual devices in device manager, and uses a proprietary codec.
I uninstalled the vulkano streamer application and rebooted the external Vulkano device.  I reinstalled the Vulkano and verified it connected to the device and could stream.  Once it did, I tried AE again and IT WORKED!
I wonder if simply rebooting the Vulkano would have fixed it.  Its like opening the garage door to turn on the refridgerator.
    Thanks for the help!

  • CS4 After Effects no longer loading after installing Office 08

During the christmas break I installed Office 08 and its seamed to have mucked something up in CS4 After effects because it won't load anymore, the program starts loading the libraries and all that stuff at the splash screen and crashes when loading User interface
After effects worked fine before I installed office 08. Does anyone know what has happened and how to fix it? The strange thing is, it works on a couple of macs but the majority of the lab is having this problem.
I have tried heaps of things:
    - Totally uninstalled office 08 and its preferences
    - Uninstall CS4 and manually remove all the preference files
    - Locate the fonts folders and comparing the fonts with that of a working mac
    - Creating a new login account
    - Updated to After effects 9.0.2
After spending hours and hours and hours doing this, I have had no luck solving the issue. Help will be greatly appreciated... I will backup all the data and re-install Leopard next week if no-one knows how to fix this.

The failure appears to be in the FLV QuickTime component, which is an FLV exporter for QuickTime that Adobe Flash (or older Macromedia releases) installs into your [root]/Library/QuickTime folder.  After Effects loads any such component that QuickTime makes available (they appear under the File > Export menu).
First, try deleting the com.macromedia.FLVExporter in your [username]/Library/Preferences folder, if present.  Failing that, pull out the FLV QuickTime component I described above.
It is also theoretically possible that the failure is in the next component in the QuickTime components folder, not the FLV component.  You might could just pull out the entire contents of that folder and see what happens.
