After Effects Color/Saturation rendering bug?

Ok so I have CS4 and I have a client who has given me the raw footage files uncompressed from a 4D camera shoot. The problem Im having is that no matter if I render my work out as a Quicktime uncompressed animation, Tiff, or Targa, when my client imports the work onto his Mac they all come out too bright and washed out.
At first I just thought it was the quicktime render cause I read that there was a bug in quicktime that reads gamma at different levels on a Mac and PC. But even rendered out as a tiff or targa? Could this perhaps be because the bug is even present on the import of the footage? I wouldnt think AE would be processing imported footage in any way except for the way it is but I cant seem to find an answer to this problem. Anyone have any clues or work arounds you have used? Please Help!!! My cleint wants to hire me for a new large commercial but only if I can find a way to make his footage not looked washed out coming out of my workflow.
Btw, im not adding any effects or color correction to the footage at all. All the effects work is done on seperate layers and the BG is locked so untouched.

The obvious: Your client's monitor color settings ar hopelessly mis-tweaked? Or conversely, he is using specific color profiles and calibration and you are not? Whatever it is, it is certainly not a fundamental problem in AE. At best, it may require enabling the "Match legacy Quicktime Gamma" option in the footage interpretation, but that is pretty much all there is. Or to put it simply: If the footage looks okay in any media player on your (uncalibrated) monitor, then it is okay - the Gamma will be the same as Windows bog standard Gamma plus/minus any evil tweaking you have done on your monitor and graphics card and the absence of a calibration. And the differences in Gamma between Mac and PC would not generally be a problem, either, as Quicktime or any image viewer would already compensate by relying on the system's display library. Hence, we return to the point of your client's monitor claibration (or lack thereof) being the culprit here most likely.

  • After Effects crashes when rendering to H264

    Hi,
On one of my computers, After Effects Crashes when rendering to H264. It always chrashes when doing the last frame of a clip. I think its when muxxing the m4a and the m4v together...
Does anyone have a solution? maybe there is some odd codec trash going on?
    Thanks in advance!

In every version of AE that has been capable of exporting h.264 the quality has been significantly lower than exporting with an app that gives you the option of multi-pass rendering. This has always been true for MPEG codecs that use inter frame (temporal) compression. You just can't get the same quality without multi pass compression. This goes back to the first use of MPEG streams.
AE CS6 may have H.264 encoding broken internally, but any pro has never used AE to render highly compressed delivery codecs because AE was never designed to be the right tool for the job.

  • After Effects Color Settings

    Hello Everyone.
I noticed Inside File-Project Settings- Color Settings, My working space is set to None. Is this color setting works like the Photoshop,  that you have either Adobe RGB 1998, or ProPhoto RGB ?
Also In The Dept, It is set to 8 bit.
My Images, are Originally Raw Shots 16 bit and later saved as a .Tiff format.  and their color setting is Adobe RGB 1998, Or ProPhoto RGB. 16 bit and some In 8 bit , and some of my Images
Have been saved for the web are sRGB, 8 bit.  And my Videos are from Canon 5D, and they are 1920 by 1080 24 fps.  I also have many old Shots from my Canon GL1, that are "NTSC not HD".
But I am not sure about this After Effects Color Settings..  Is this color setting has to match the PhotoShop Color setting ?
    Thanks.

  • After Effects CS5 DNxHD rendering problems

Hello folks, I posted this last month, but still haven't worked it out.  My problem is that everytime I try to render a quicktime from After Effects CS5 using Avid's DNxHD codec, I get this error, about 60 - 100 frames in:  "Rendering error while writing to file (path name here). An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted. (-1610153464)  I've tried rendering to different drives, rendering with and w/out multiprocessing, with and w/out Open GL rendering, different comps / projects, and different flavors of the DNxHD codec (8 bit, 10bit, 145, 220, etc).  Here's my basic system specs:
    Win 7 Pro 64bit
    Dual 6 core Westmere Processors
    48GB Ram
    Quadro FX 3800 1.5GB (driving 2 x 24" HP monitors)
GeForce GT 240 (driving a Cintiq tablet)
I have another system, same operation system, but with dual quad core Nehalem's and 16GB Ram and a Quadro FX 3400 and it renders to DNxHD just fine.  I'm certain I have the latest codecs from Avid, and I've tried both the LE and PE versions.  Any thoughts?
    Nate

It's a bug in the CoDec itself, if I'm not mistaken. I've seen this being discussed somewhere, but can't remember the full details. I believe the issue oils down to the Avid stuff using an older version of some compiler library and not dealing correctly with some SSE stuff on some processors. You may try to toy around with the BIOS settings to suppress SSE4 and 4.1 and see if it helps. Also consider installing the .NET runtimes. They still have those magical healing poweers, as the install resolves any version conflicts that may exist with outdated system DLLs bundled with some programs. That may also help. In the long run, though, I think Avid will just have to update DNx to properly work on 64bit and those new processors...

  • After effects color corrected clip not showing correctly in Premiere

    Hello all,
I have recently made a short film with a few effects in Premiere and After effects CS4.  I have used the Dynamic Link to accomplish this.  I have added color correction with Color Finesse in After effects.  The problem is I some of the color correction is not showing up in Premiere once it has finished.  Some of them are adjustment layers and some are not and the ones that are showing up are diverse like that as well.  I have rendered the footage and rendered the premiere time line, it fixes it at first but won't build a DVD the right way then the fixes just seem to disappear when scrolling through the timeline.
Is anyone else haveing this problem?
Do you think it's something wrong that an update will fix?
    Maybe a new codec?

Describe the exect DL steps you took.

  • FCP + After Effects + Color Workflow Question

Forgive me if this is a naive question. I would like to know what is the best way to work between FCP, Color, and After Effects. This is the first project I'm working on that requires all three applications.
All my shots are done in DVCPro HD and imported into FCP. DVCPro is not really supported in Color so I learned that they should be converted to ProRes (right?). In Color I will be adding a vignette effect and color grading so I know it has to be last otherwise my texts and mattes in AE will look like they're on top of the video.
My problem with that is almost every shot will have an AE effect in it so it's easier to dump the whole timeline into AE using popcorn's XML script. But once I export it from AE and put it back into FCP it is one clip but color correction and effects has to be done differently for each clip and I can't do that in Color with the single AE clip I just rendered. So I'm kind of lost, is my only option to add effects in AE one clip at a time and return them to FCP?
Also am I right that Color only supports Apple ProRes? DVCPro HD hasn't worked so far.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    DP

    Hello David.
Regarding your question about DVCPro HD support, it is supported as an Importable format, but Color cannot render out in DVCPro HD. Color supports ProRes across the board. Here's a list of supported formats:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/color/usermanual/index.html#chapter=4%26sectio n=9%26tasks=true
After Effects really isn't part of my normal workflow, so I can't really comment on it, other than I've had a lot of problems with 10.0.1 and ProRes. That problem has caused me to eliminate AE from any workflow that I use here.

  • After Effects Color Grading Problem

I have imported some footage (about 3 minutes worth) into a single composition in After Effects in order to color correct with Color Finesse. Without even having loaded the plugin (or ANY plugins), the video plays at between 14 and 20 fps with the following error message: "(NOT realtime)".  This is at 50% screen size and quarter resolution.
I have a fairly powerful workstation with 12GB ram, Core i7 920, Radeon HD 4650 card and several 7200 RPM HDDs.  The footage has been transcoded (details below) and I can't figure out where the breakdown is and what steps I can take to ensure a smoother experience.
If I did something wrong, what's your workflow for doing color corrections out of the T3i or a similar Canon DSLR?
** T3i Quicktime files transcoded to DNxHD Quicktime files. **
    Settings as follows:
    - DNxHD: 175 10-bit
    - Resolution: 1080p
    - Color Levels: RGB Levels
    - Alpha: None
    - Frame Rate: 24 frames
    - Interlaced Scaling: unchecked
    - Quality: 100%

  • MEDIA MANAGER NOT HANDLING AFTER EFFECTS 7.0 RENDERS

Media Manager works on my captured DV footage. However, when using an After Effects QT movie copy of my credits, it failed. I spent several hours on this since it initially was my "test."
I gave up then tried my captured footage, canceling before actually processing it. Voila! I could finally see a change in the bar graphs. Any ideas why this happened? Can't insert a screenshot of my afx settings (ugh!) so I've typed them. Thanks for helping!!!

There can be problems with media manager if your source clips do not have a reel associated with them (as happens with imported files as opposed to captured material). Try creating a tape name in the browser for these clips. This may solve your problem.

  • After Effects Color Correction Eye Dropper

I use the Color Correction Eye dropper for clothing videos and recently it stopped letting me select the dropper.  I've tried restarting the program and computer.  Would I need to re-install After Effects?

We are going to need a lot more information.
What exact point number version of AE are you using? 12.2.1? 11.0.4?
    What effect are you using?
    How are you using it?
Screenshots showing things like your comp window, timeline, and effects panel would all be helpful in demonstrating your issue.

  • After Effects error when rendering

"After Effects error: Rendering error while writing file "file_name". An output module failed. The file maybe damaged or corrupted (-1610153464)"
file rendered successfully in draft and poor quality but this error is when best quality.
Tried saving into different location, rendered but the finished film kept stopping every 2 seconds and took 7GB of space. The film is meant to be 55 seconds long.

You are using the default Animation codec which is the default codec. You should really study up on rendering and formats. I'm guessing that your connection to the external drive had some data rate problems or started dropping bits. Try another cable or render to your boot drive. You've scaled your latest screenshots to the point where they are very difficult to read, but it looks like everything else is normal except that your top screenshot shows the only footage in the shot looks like it came from a GoPro and your composition frame rate in the Render Settings is showing up as 24. It's not likely that that is the actual frame rate of the footage. Select the footage in the composition in the Project Panel and check out the frame rate. If it is 59.94 then your comp should either be 29.97 or 59.94. Because of the size I suspect that the frame rate is not 24 but 23.976.
This probably did not cause your problem but frame rates are important to understand and use properly.

  • Preview-picture making fix in After Effects CS6 before rendering

  • Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
I always export a video following this sequence:
File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
"Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

  • CS4 to CS6 After Effects Color Issue with Linked Photoshop Files

Hi, I just recently converted a CS4 project into CS6 and everything work wonderfully except that the photoshop files are different in color.  I know this because I took screenshots of the video I was working with and edited them in Photoshop before importing them back in to the project so I know the color should match.  This screenshot may help (as you can see I've increased the brightness and contrast in the affected area so that you may see what is happening.  There is a Photoshop layer that is covering up a number of scratches on the guiter (it is very beat up) and in the original (CS4) project they hid them perfectly while in the CS6 project they are clearly there.
I am not sure why the Photoshop files are acting differently but they are.  I need to re-export, please help if possible.  Thank you so much.  Jason.

In Bridge, my color settings are shown as synchronized (some kind of universal deal I guess), but the Photoshop files and the After Effects file are not color managed.  What is confusing me is how completely "not color managed" files can interpret RGB values for anything different than their face value?
    My Workaround (Not a Solution):
In light of how specific this problem is, I've decided to simply match the Photoshop files to the After Effects footage with a gamma adjustment using a levels effect.  For this situation settings the levels to .88 corrected the problem.  However, exporting the project from Premiere results in a darker movie file than the orginal so I was forced to correct the gamma on the export as well.  The new export (after the corrections) looks less appealing to me but as a standalone product is acceptable.

  • After Effects CC slow renders on iMac (low CPU Usage?)

    Hi,
i have an fully specced late 2013 27" iMac for working with the Creative Cloud Programms. At the moment i only have 8GB installed because of problems with my 32 GB Ram kit. I have an internal SSD for the OS and Programms, an 256GB USB3 SSD for Chache Files and a Raid 0 for my Source Files.
I am now rendering an 7min long movie shot on an Red Epic in 5K and 4K to an ProRes422HQ 1080p File out of After Effect. I mainly used the "Levels" Effect and an Plug-In called "Film Convert". No crazy animations or effects. My Render time is about 18 hours (it`s nearly finished, so this are no wrong calculations by AE).
Are this normal render times that should be expected when working with such large source files?
What makes me wonder is that the Activity Monitor show only bout 40% CPU Usage (see attached screenshot), shouldn`t that be maxed out?
I have to render out a few more similar clips, so optimizing this would be great.
Thanks a lot for the help!

    Hi,
thanks  a lot for your answers!
I was too thinking about the HDD setup but i think mine is pretty decent. My source footage is on an 3 HDD Raid-0 with 550 MB/s read and write, i have an 250 GB Scratch/Chache SSD in an USB 3 UASP enclosure thats around 400 MB/s read and write and my project files are on an external USB 2 drive (will change to USB 3 soon). Only thing is that i am outputting my files to the Scratch/Chache SSD right now because i am still waiting for my USB 3 "Output" drive. But i don`t think the Chache is beeing used while rendering, or could that be the mistake?
The GPU is this one: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB and should be ok i think.
I hope my new 32GB Ram kit arrives soon, so i can test if more RAM helps.
I have an 4K HD (Quad 1080p) Composition which contains mostly 4K HD source footage mixed with some downscaled 5K HD shots and some upscaled 2K HD Shots. The comp is mainly a simply edit from premiere with a Levels effect on every clip and the 3rd party film convert plugin plus an Unsharp Mask on the whole comp on adjustment layers. I tried turning those off too but it wasn`t speeding up much the rendering. I have no Ray-traced comp.
I left the Render Settings to "Best Settings" for the final rendering. Altough for preview purposes i was putting the resolution to "quater" in the Render Settings and it took only about 30min for the whole comp to render.
In the Output Module i was chosing ProRes422HQ as a codec and 1920x1080 as output resolution.
The 4K and 5K shots are looking pretty good when rendering with the Render Settings turned to "quater" resolution but the 2K shot are looking terrible then. Could the long render time be a problem with how after effects handels the de-bayering of the R3D Files?
