Mylenium is correct. The OpenGL features (with the exception of the OpenGL - Interactive preview mode) weren't very useful in After Effects CS4.
Without furhter information about what your GPU is and what drivers you have installed, we can't help.

  • After Effects CS4 won't open?

I installed my After Effects and did everything properly and used it maybe once or twice until it started to not open at all.
Everytime I open it now the licence Agreement' comes up everytime and I have to press Accept, but when I do the After Effects loading screen comes up for maybe 2 seconds and then disappears with a sound and no message. Just doesn't wanna open.
Is there a reason for this?
Thanks for any help, its GREATLY appreciated!

Hi there, I installed it as a full retail version.
It's worked fine upto maybe a week or two ago when all of a sudden it loads (the purple screen) and then nothing happens or comes up.
I have Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and its a 32-bit I believe.
    Here are my specs...
Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
System Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061 (a830n)
    Bios: Version 08.00.10
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 (2 CPU's with HT) at 3.20GHZ
    Memory: 2040MB RAM
    Direct X: Version 9.0c
250 GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
Chip Type: Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
Like I said, it has worked fine upto a week or two ago when it just doesn't wanna come up.
I am thinking its more of a computer problem or something affecting the program...but again, I wouldn't know what.
I have uninstalled and re-installed it a few times and it does the same thing. It'll come up maybe once or twice and after that, nothing.
Like any information you can give would be so helpful!
    Thanks a lot.

  • After Effects CS4 will not open

My system runs on Windows XP SP2 and has 2GB RAM. I tried to run AE but the splash screen shows 4% RAM usage and a popup box displays with a message of "After Effetcs: Not enough memory to create compress formats (424905K requested, 216828K available).  Any ideas please why this is happening ?

Mmh, something is leaking. Are there any other Adobe products on the system that use MPEG CoDecs (Premiere, Encore, Adobe Media Encoder). If so, my best guess would be that those are not installed correctly or were messed up during an update or so. That stuff is shared by all apps and while your system is not ideal, it certainly should work and not give this error. Depending on what is going on, only a full re-install of everything might fix it, though, unfortunate as it may be. So make friends with the CS3 and CS4 Clean Scripts from the support pages, set aside a good afternoon and take some deep breaths...

  • If you experience a crash in After Effects CS4...

If you experience a crash in After Effects CS4, please provide full information through the Adobe Crash Reporter.
See this post on my blog for more information:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2008/12/after_effects_and_the_adobe_cr.html

Ran into this problem today. I made sure to send a detailed report to Adobe. I have traced the problem to Red Giant Knoll Light Factory plugins. I am using the latest version 2.5.3.
Removing the plugins from the MediaCore folder allows CS4 to open again. I tried moving the KLF plugin folder to the AE CS4 Plugins folder instead and it opens, but as soon as you try to apply the filter, it crashes the same way.
I am wondering if the AE CS4 9.0.1 patcher will help things at all...

  • After Effects CS4 reinstallation failure

I uninstalled Adobe After Effects CS4 from a Mac OS X 10.5 due to the program's continuous crashing. When reinstalling it, the following notice appeared after inserting all 4 discs:
"Installation of the following components has failed: Adobe After Effects CS4"
    Can anyone help me please?

    Hi EmilyAnn29,
    Please follow the mentioned steps:
    1. Go to Application/Utilities/Adobe Installers and look for After Effects CS4 uninstaller. If present run the uninstaller and try to installing again.
    2. Copy the content of the DVD to your desktop and try to install.
    3. Run the Cleaner tool and look for After Effect in the apps list. If present proceed with uninstallation: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
    4. Download the CS4 software from the direct link: http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html and try installing again.
Please let us know whether it worked.

  • Unable to open After Effects CS4 Mac OS

I just downloaded some updates via Adobe updater and the After Effects update wouldn't install after 2 attempts. Now After Effects won't even open. I am issued a window that reads:
"check with the developer to make sure Adobe After Effects CS4 works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and MAC OS X."
How can this be if nothing has been changed? I have the CS4 Master Suite and I am going to waste a whole day reinstalling everything
Is there another option or will I have to begin the reinstall?
    Thanks

    Apologies,
I am running version 10.6.6 and yes the software was working fine before the update. The thing that's most puzzling is the update failed to install. All the other Adobe programmes (Photoshop etc) work fine, After Effects is the only one experiencing problems.
I contacted technical support and they said to copy the file from the installation disc onto desktop and boot from there but that has not worked either. They are going to contact me tomorrow to see if everything went smoothly.
I will give the cleaner a try.
    Many thanks!

You can change the amount of audio that is rendered for previews, which can be useful if you're running into memory problems.
The amount of audio that is rendered for previews is specified by the Duration setting in the Previews preferences.

There's a list of the big new features in the
"New features in After Effects CS4" section of After Effects CS4 Help on the Web, and you can read about every little change to the UI in the
"User interface changes from After Effects CS3 to After Effects CS4" section.
But I thought that all of you who have posted requests to this wishlist might like to get specific responses to some of the items on this list.
First of all, though, I'd like to point out an innovative set of features that I think addresses a request that many of you have made... just not exactly as you asked for it. All of us have wanted a better way to see into and navigate among nested compositions (precompositions). The Composition Mini-Flowchart and Composition Navigator make moving around in a complex project much, much faster and easier. Telling you to see the
"Opening and navigating nested compositions" section isn't going to do this feature set justice. You'll only appreciate how slick this is when you get your hands on it.
Oh, and we reversed the behavior of double-clicking versus Option-double-clicking a precomposition layer: Now double-clicking opens the source composition in the Composition panel, not the precomposition layer in the Layer panel.
Now, on to the specific responses...

  • Quicktime X and After Effects CS4 - Unwanted Color / Gamma shift

    Hello,
Upon the import of ANY video footage file into After Effects CS4, there is an immediate color (I am guessing a gamma shift) difference between how the video appears in Quicktime (both X and the older player) and how it appear in the After Effects composition window.
Footage appears to be darker in AE and lighter in quicktime, both before and after export. The gamma/color then appears roughly the same when being compressed via h.264 and uploaded to the web (the same in Safari, much darker via Firefox).
My main concern is simply getting AE's color to match Quicktime's so that I can have as close of a match between the color I think I have created in AE, and the actual color that appears in my final output to the web.
I have tried using all of the fixes to be found relating to gamma shifts via .h264, prores, etc. but nobody seems to have this problem with every codec, even animation. I have tried assigning color profiles in AE, matching quicktime legacy formats, etc. All of the options available in AE to no avail.
My monitor is calibrated fine, I am using Perian, All of the latest software updates. Any advice much appreciated!

Hi, thanks for the link. While helpful I am still having problems!
I tried using the method described with Automator to assign a color profile to a test Animation file, created from scratch in AE and rendered out as an Animation with no color management (previously it made no difference to the quicktime gamma shift as to if I had assigned a working color space or not within AE).
Automator only gives three color profile options, HD, SD, or PAL. I tried using HD as this is the size of video I normally work in (although I am also working in PAL), and ran Automator. I also tried using PAL and got identical results. It took about 30 seconds to finish and the result indeed looked much better in QT, and opened up in AE looking identical to a copy of the same .mov file with no color correction.
However, there is *still some change in the image quality as it appears in QT from how it (and the original) appears in AE*.
Original created / displayed in AE: What I am trying to maintain
Rendered out, Automator color profile HD assigned, and opened in QT: Gamma looks good but colors slightly more saturated than original in AE.
Rendered out with no color profile: Original problem with large gamma shift making everything bleached/washed out.
I have a screen shot I can show you to illustrate this here:
    http://www.yousendit.com/download/THE0ek9xa0RxRTNIRGc9PQ
While the difference is subtle you can look at the RGB numbers and see the middle example is indeed more saturated.
Perhaps I need to use another color profile when working with the animation codec for animations created from scratch in AE to avoid this saturation shift, other than HD or PAL? Would you know of how to do this?
Also, would you know of how to change this, and perhaps a way of changing qucktime's interpretation rules for all animation files per se, so that I do not need to go through every .mov with the animation codec and assign profiles to them?
Many thanks for your time and sorry for being so long winded!

  • Severe audio problems in After Effects CS4 and MXF and more...

    Hi!
I've been experiencing a lot of problems lately with several CS4 products.
First, and the worst, is that there seems to be some severe audio bug in After Effects when handling mxf-files. I pre-cut a project in premiere CS4, shot with a Sony EX1, and then imported the project in After Effects CS4.
In premiere everything worked fine and I had all the audio. In AE however the audio matched with the MXF-files disappeared (Yes I had the import audio box checked). All other audio worked fine from the music tracks and so on, but the MXF-files (MXF for NLE) was completely blank, the waveforms were completely flat. I checked every option there is in AE regarding audio and tried enabling and disabling XMP ID's and so on. After a lot of tweaking and testing I understood that the problem was not with any settings anywhere, the MXF-files lacked audio even if I started a new project and just imported the MXF-file.
The problem seems to be connected to when importing from Premiere. My colleague was editing a similar project on his computer in After Effects without problems, and he started out fresh in AE (didn't pre-cut in premiere). However, we tried to move my project to his computer, to see if the problem was connected with incompability with my hardware or such, and he got the same problem as me when he opened the project. Waveforms on MXF-files were completely flat. Certain confirmation that the problem was not connected with my computer appeared when he later reopened his own project, that had worked fine before, and audio was now completely gone - waveforms flat. An hour later, by chance, his audio suddenly popped back.
I have experienced this problems in two different projects in different forms (but both pre-cut in premiere). In the first, audio disappeared while previewing but was there when I ctrl-scrolled and rendered (no I hadn't muted audio in the preview panel). In the second, audio was completely gone even when rendered.
In both cases I tried saving and restarting the computer, reimporting from premiere, starting a fresh after effects project and only importing the mxf-files, changing the project settings, fps fixed to the correct instead of auto, changing output audio mapping, changing XMP, and so on in every possible way and combination I could imagine.
At my company our suspicion is that After Effects flags mfx-files imported from Premiere in some wierd way, to strengthen and ensure compatibility between the two - regarding different audio tracks, settings and effects from premiere (and this is almost what you could suspect that the XMP ID is for, but as explained with or without doesn't change a thing regarding this). We have no problem with the pure MXF support for AE, as MXF-files work just fine in After Effects if you import them directly and have not imported them through premiere earlier (but after a file has been "flagged" you seem to be sc***ed)
Anyone else experiencing this? Or am I missing something huge?
As additional notes, the dynamic link function seems extremely buggy and both premiere both sometimes complains about "dynamic link already in use and only one connection blah blah" even though only one link is used, and even though you restart the projects, programs, computer, whatever.
In furher addition Adobe Media Encoder (which also seems to be using some sort of dynamic link offspring) is super-buggy and most codec formats either doesn't start to render or just renders partially and then the program hangs. The problem have a connection with a process named pproheadless.exe eating upp all the RAM (4gbs).
(My workstation has been working smoothly for one and a half years and I have had very little problems with CS3 and "just" AE CS4. I am cautious of updates, don't have spyware and use Quicktime 7.5 as 7.5.5 is superbuggy and people seems to have problems with 7.6 and it doesn't fix the gamma issues anyway.)
Sorry if this was a long post but the problem is compl

Dude, that's what these forums are all about. Everyone in here says they dont work for Adobe, but they all act like apologists for what is clearly a disaster of a software release.  My complaints aren't as specialized as yours, just very basic, and I wont go into all of them, because the list is long, and includes nearly every program in CS4.
I'm going for a refund, either from the retailer or my credit card company. Releasing software like this is dishonest.

  • Adobe After Effects CS4 Crashes During Startup

Hey I have a major problem i think.. after I installed AAE CS4 I picked the trial to see how it was b4 i bought it. Once everything was installed and complete I restarted my computer but when I went to open the program it pulled the grey aae startup box. It had 4% complete and said Initializing Media Core then it just stops and minutes later crashes with not progress. It continually does it with no improvement. Anybody that can help me?

I did all of the above:
    - 9.03 update
    -   1. Go go Control Panel -> System-> Advance System settings
         2. Click Advanced tab, Performance -> Setting
         3. Click Data Execution Prevention  -> Turn on DEP for all programs except those I select - > Here you click Browse and choose where your AE CS4 location is, and click Apply -> OK .
    - Run as administrator
Nothing worked. I still get the crash at start-up with the message
    <960> <AppDirs> <5> Required Dir=
    C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS4\Support Files\Required.
and after that sorry, AE can'r continue..
Help me please, I have the 30 days trial and I desperately need to learn how this program works for a project. After that I want to buy it.
My system is 32bit Vista Windows, I installed AE CS4 (that's the last one to run on 32bit right?) and did an update to 9.03.

  • Adobe After Effects CS4 - Compressor could not be found

I have used After Effects in the past and I haven't had any problems. But, tonight I had an error message while opening the program.
    It said:
After Effects warning: a compressor used in an output module template could not be found. The animation compressor will be used instead. ( 44 :: 18 )
I click ok and the program crashed without opening.
I tried opening it several times but I kept on getting this error. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but it pulled up the same error again.
What do I need to do to fix this?
The last time I used After Effects was during the summer of 2014 and it worked fine.

I have After Effects CS4 and my operating system Snow Leopard.
When I mean it doesn't work, I mean it won't load up when after it pulls up that error message. I'll click on the After Effects icon, it'll load as usual, then it'll pull up that error message.
After Effects warning: a compressor used in an output module template could not be found. The animation compressor will be used instead. ( 44 :: 18 )
I click okay, it closes, and then I have an error saying that Adobe After Effects has crashed.

  • ERROR Launching - After Effects CS4

    Hello all.
This is my colleague getting her new MacPro, Snow Leopard installed
    - We updated everything OS
    - Installed and updated everything Adobe CS4 suite of production premium software
    - Even reset preferences by pressing CommandShiftOption keys while launching AE CS$
Still getting errors of launching its own internal plug-ins, not external. When trying to open a pre-CS4, CS3 project
    Anybody any insight to this?
    Thanks and cheers

There could be two reasons for this.
    1. You're using a trial version. Support for video formats that relies on codecs provided by third parties (all MPEG flavors, including AVCHD and HDV) is not available in the trial.
    2. If it's not a trial version, it could be the following issue: If you downloaded the After Effects 9.0 trial, then updated to After Effects 9.0.1, and then activated the application with a serial number after purchasing a license (all in exactly that order), then the After Effects 9.0.2 update will fail to update your third-party content, like the Cycore (CC) effect plug-ins. It appears that uninstalling the third-party content and then restarting the application will cause the updated third-party content to be installed correctly. On windows you'll have an entry in Control Panels/Programs and Features. On the mac, it will be in /Application/Utilities/Adobe Installer.
