After Effects CS5 hangs on startup

After Effects CS5 (MAC, german trial version) needs 5-10 minutes to start up, hangs on the message "MediaCore wird initialisiert". On another Mac (small macbook!) it works fine. I did a reinstall, no effect. No plugins are installed.

Some of you appear to be having different problems.  Let's keep this thread focused on QT32 server related hangs only.  Please start a new thread if:
1. you are never seeing an AE splash dialog come up
2. the splash dialog does not say "Initializing MediaCore" during the hang you are seeing
3. killing the QT32 Server process  in the Activity Monitor (mac)  / Task Manager (windows) does not result in unfreezing AE.
Please note that if the Activity Monitor says QT32 Server is "unresponsive",  that can be normal and does not, by itself, mean you are experiencing a QT32 Server hang problem.    If (2) is happening but not (3), then you are likely experiencing some other plugin related issue than the QT32 server.  If all the above do apply to you.  Make sure you've tried the firewall fix mentioned above first.
If that doesn't help, on Mac please get the following information:     Repeat the hang with only AE running,  then go to the Activity Monitor and select the QT32 Server process.   Then press the "Sample Process" button at the top of the window.   When the sample is complete,  please post the first page of the resulting text file.

  • After Effects CS5 Crashes At Startup

I have been looking all over for the solution to this problem, but nothing I have found has worked so far.
I have taken out all of the plugins and tried.
Uninstalled AE CS5 and downloaded a fresh copy
    Taken out all fonts
Yet I still get an error message which states
    "Crash in progress. Last Logged message was: <6552> <AppDirs> <5> Required Dir = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5\Support Files\Required
Does anyone know what the solution might be?
    Thanks

I have now tried several different things, including going through the OpenGL troubleshooter on the adobe website.
I uninstalled all the plugins, fonts, deleted AE files etc. I then opened a new user on my PC and it worked! But when I tried opening it for the second time it came up with the same error message.
This happened straight after I installed all the Cycore FX plugin, so I repeated everything as before and opened a new user account. I didn't install anything and like before it opened up the first time, but the second time it crashed with the same message without me having changed or installed anything!
    So to summarise:
A new user account in windows allows me to open AE once, the second time it crashes.
Should I just leave AE open all the time? That seems to be the only thing that works!

    Peter

  • After Effects CS5 Hangs . . . Every 5 Minutes

Hi! I just upgraded to CS5 Master Suite. Now I can't work in AE for more than 5 minutes before I get a spinning beach ball. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing or what window/panel I'm in. I've tried shutting of OpenGL, re-allocating RAM, updating AE, checking dynamic link firewall issue, turned multiprocessing on and off . . . and nothing seems to get rid of the ball. Has anyone had this problem OR, even better, has anyone fixed it?
    We have:
    A Mac 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Mac OSX 10.5.8
    32 GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, 512 MB v-ram
    Thanks so much!
    K-

No funky codecs and the fonts are all okay.  I still have AE CS4
installed and it runs just fine.  I would switch back if I hadn't
already built an entire program in CS5.  CS5 also crashes quite a
bit.  One other note: When the spinning ball ends (after about 2
minutes), the mouse is always crazy for a several seconds.  It
highlights everything no matter what panel I'm in.  I have to hit esc
several times and cycle through different tools to get it back to
    normal.

  • After Effects CS5 Startup Error

Hi, I recently downloaded the After Effects CS5 trial for Mac OS X (64 Bit). I installed everything correctly (I think) and tried to start up the program, as I was very excited because I have heard great things about this program. I was unhappy to see a startup error pop up that says this, "After Effects Warning: Unknown BIB Error invalid encoding, BRV, 0 (83 :: 3)" I think it might be that I downloaded the 64 Bit instead of 32, but I do believe I'm running on a 64-bit operating system (Mac OS X 13-In. Macbook Pro), but I'm not sure. Some help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
    -John (AdobeAddict17)

There is no 32bit version of CS5, but it's really unimportant. OSX has supported 64bit apps since 10.5.x and 10.6.x is native 64bit. So no problems on that end. The error you are seeing is a generic drawing error which may be caused due to misconfiguration of your graphics hardware or problems with font rendering. in the latter case, removing unnecessary fonts may help, for the graphics config a system update may have a newer driver. Also make sure that you have the Verdana font on your system. This has been known to be a problem with OSX 10.6, since it does not install the font by default.

  • Premiere and After Effects CS5.5 crash on startup

I had been using Production Premium CS5.5 for a few months without any problems. Then there was a power outtage a couple nights ago and since then Premiere and After Effects crash whenever I try to open them. I get an error message like:
Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <5980><AppDirs> <5> Required Dir = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5.5\Support Files\Required
The rest of the programs still work fine. I reinstalled a few times, used the Cleaner tool and also tried some solutions on this page:http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/errors-exit-code-6-exit.html, but no luck.
My last installation actually didn't give me any fatal errors or errors, but AE and Premiere still don't work.

  • Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) won't start After Effects CS5.5 because it's a powerpc app!?

I've had CS 5.5 Master Collection installed on my Mac since it came out. All the CS 5/5.5 apps I've used up to now have worked fine, in 64-bit mode (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, InDesign). Now I need to use After Effects, but I can't get it to start.
First it said it couldn't rename a Workspaces.xml file in the preferences directory in my home folder. In fact, there was no such file there at all. Nothing to rename. So, I uninstalled After Effects using its uninstaller; then reinstalled it from the install DVDs.
Now, it fails on startup saying the After Effects CS5.5 application cannot be run because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. True: OS X no longer runs apps that require Rosetta. CS 5.5 is does not require Rosetta; it's compatible with Lion. The OS 10.7 Known Issues KB article says nothing about After Effects: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html?promoid=JBQYY
So...what's going on? I need this thing working for a project with a deadline! I don't get it. Anybody seen this before? (I didn't find anything in the discussions about it, nor Google...)

Interesting article, but I knew I was leaving PowerPC apps behind when I moved to OS 10.7, and Adobe claims that After Effects CS 5.5 is fully compatible with Lion. But you must be right about prefs; there's gotta be something causing the Mac OS to think this version of CS is ancient...
Since my initial message, I've tried and failed to find any details about how to select the right prefs to delete. I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my system drive. That got rid of the PowerPC error:) Now on startup AE says mediacore fails to initialize. I can choose to quit or continue on that error, but continuing just results in another error that says dynamiclinkmanager unexpectedly quit, and then AE locks up and I have to force quit it. Not much progress!
No other answers on this so far... Before I uninstall the entire Creative Suite and then delete all Adobe system and hidden files everywhere, any more suggestions? Or a list of the right prefs I should trash?

  • After Effects CS5.5 - Lion: Crash on splash screen EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGABRT)

So one day, out of the blue, After Effects stops wanting to open. The worst part is, I can't think of any changes that would have caused this.
I am running After Effects CS5.5 (10.5.1) on my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011), which is running Mac OSX Lion. Here is my system profile (with some sections omitted).
Just a few weeks ago, I began to consistently receive this message during the AE splash screen:
    After Effects Alert
Last log message was: <140735295236448> <ASL.ResourceUtils.GetLanguageIDFromRegistry> <0> Unable to obtain the User 'Language' registry key at: Software\Adobe\After Effects\10.5.1\ Defaulting to 'en_US'.
    Here is a crash log.
    Any ideas?
    First attempt
I figured maybe I had a bad preference file, so I cleared my prefs. Nothing changed aside from a modified error message:
    After Effects Alert
    Last log message was: <140735295236448> <DynamicLink> <5> 0x114ee8418
    And a crash log.
Also, if I try opening AE again, after I cleared my prefs and opened it once, the error message returns to the "registry key" alert.
    Second, third, fourth attempt
So I uninstalled and reinstalled After Effects about 3 times. No change. I used the latest download from Adobe, and the original Master Collection image: no difference.
    Fifth attempt
I created a second admin account to see if this was an isolated issue. It isn't; same problem.
    Sixth attempt
I thought about QuickTime, so I opened up System Prefs, and uninstalled Perian. I left the prefpane there though.
Also, I have the latest version of Java.
Seventh attempt (Added 19 March 2012)
I used the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool to wipe out my entire Adobe installation. I still have the same problem after a reinstall. I'm going to try installing AE on my external drive next. This is really frustrating. Has anyone experienced this issue and found a resolution?
    Notes
Interestingly enough, all of the other Abobe CS5.5 apps I installed work fine:
    Bridge
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    InDesign
    Premiere Pro
    OnLocation
    Extension Manager
    Added 1:54PM, 13 March 2012:
Also, opening up the render engine causes the same error message.

I just installed AE, have never used it, and am seeing it bail on startup with the same odd language registry key error. Please see my post on a related thread.
Any luck here? Would be nice to get AE to boot so I could evaluate it.

  • After Effects CS5 Mac says "Quicktime is not installed on this system, some components...

the error message is "QuickTime is not installed on this system, some components will not work correctly."
And when I open After Effects CS5 on MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 running 10.6.3, it is basically not functionaly, because it will not open any quicktime movies without an error message.
Quicktime is installed on this mac.
I have run permissions and run diskwarrior, and it has not solved this problem.
    Any ideas?

There are a few things that cause After Effects to report that QuickTime is not installed.
One  is the obvious one: If  QuickTime 7.x is not installed, After Effects will report that QuickTime  is not installed.
The next most common reason is  quite different: The TCP communication with the QuickTime server is  blocked, so After Effects thinks that QuickTime isn't there at all. The  fix for this to remove the blockage in communication. Sometimes the  blockage is because of an aggressive firewall program, which sees the  TCP communication and stops it. If this is the case, then you can either  turn the firewall software off or specifically allow the QT32 Server  component to communicate; instructions for letting a specific process  communicate are different for each firewall program, so you'll have to  look in the documentation for your security software for information  about doing that. Here's a document with some more information about  this general issue, though it refers to a more serious failure when the  blockage happens at a different step in the After Effects startup  process: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/857/cpsid_85711.html
Another  reason is that QuickTime can fail to initialize fully because it gets  stuck loading a badly written importer component. If you have any AVI  importers/codecs on your Mac, this could be the issue. Here's a message  that goes into some detail about that: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2808379#2808379

  • After Effects CS5 beach ball

Does anyone else experience this and/or know of a cause/solution?
Working in After Effects CS5 I get a lot of 'spinning beach balls'.
The cause? I do not know and cannot guess.
It randomly happens, mostly, when moving a random item in the composition window.
"Pick it up", try to move it: no... beach ball! Wait for up to a minute,... and work can continue.
The app just completely freezes but luckily, most of the time, returns to its senses after about 30 secs, sometimes much more.
I've learned not to force quit every time because as said, it mostly returns to normal after a while.
Gonna force quit now: this time its been hanging for as long as I am typing this...
It is of course driving me totally crazy...
    Regards,
    Harold

Ah yes, of course, sorry, here goes:
    Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    7 GB RAM
    OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3
    After Effects CS5
    Multiprocessing off
4,5 GB RAM available for AE
    OpenGL: enabled
Enable adaptive resolution when OpenGL is enabled: off
    Accelarate effect using OpenGL: enabled
Preview modes and viewer quality settings have no effect.
    Basically just the out-of-the-box settings.
    Comps are all 1280x720 / 25 fps
No footage, just RGB stills (JPEG, PSD, AI)
Effects applied: yes and no, that does not seem to matter.
    No 3rd party filters/effects/plugins used
The strange thing is that it happens with the most basic, no frills comp too...
In my opinion I am doing exactly the same things, or less, as I was doing in AE CS4, with no trouble at all.

  • Adobe Download Assistant communication error(Error 107) only when I download After Effects CS5.5

I've been trying to download the After Effects CS5.5 Trial for over a month now and it is really frustrating because I don't have a problem downloading any other adobe trial just After Effects CS5.5, it says I have a communication error (Error 107) and I know I really don't because I can download any other trial from Adobe Download Assistant. I reallly need help to try to download this program. I don't know if it is that I'm in another country, my server, or something relevant but i would really aprecite it if you could tell me why this is happening.

  • Sony NEX-5N AVCHD 2.0 1080p50 and Premiere Pro/After Effects CS5.5

    Hi all,
I have a new Sony NEX-5N and have shot some test 1080p50 video using it.
On my quest for some new editing/production software to close the loop I have just downloaded and installed a Trial Version of CS5.5 Production Premium.
I am able to load my video files into Premiere Pro.
However, when I attempt to open the Video File in After Effects, I recieve the following Error message:
After Effects error: '00023.MTS' cannot be imported - this '.mts' file is damaged or unsupported.
I have tried renaming the extension to .MPG, .M4V, .M2TS all with exactly the same result.
Perhaps this is a limitation of the Trial Version or perhaps a limitation of After Effects CS5.5.  Is anyone able to advise?
As extra information I include below the TEXT output from MediaInfo for the file I am able to load into Premiere Pro CS5.5 but not After Effects.
    Thanks.

I just recorded 4 seconds of a clock pendulum swinging, surprisingly the file was 20Mb!?!?  Anyway, I have made the file available for download at the following location:
    http://andrew.net.au/~rowan/avchd/00032.MTS
You can browse the directory at http://andrew.net.au/~rowan/avchd/ if you need to "right-click" and save as.
I am hoping it is a limitation of the trial as I have noticed a few other "gotchas" with the trial version.
Thanks for the advice about video format, I have noticed that my computer (Core 2 Duo) is very slow to process the H.264 stream, PremierePro cannot play the 30sec stream in realtime (starts to stutter around 23sec) and After Effects starts its stutter almost immediately (both just playing the stream with no effects) - that said WindowsMediaPlayer has no problem playing the same stream at full speed.  I am however reluctant to do any transcoding except to a lossless format as it seems counter intuitive - but this will be the subject of another post, as I don't want to clutter this one.
    Thanks again.

  • MBP 17" 2,3 GHz - After Effects CS5.5 is not usable - too slow

    Hey!
I am a motiongraphics artist working mainly with After Effects CS5.5. I am coming from PC and I am quite new to the Mac-World. But for now I am not really satisfied - actually very disappointed. I have worked the last three years on a cheapo Acer Laptop - and I really have to say it was at least (I am not kidding!) twice as fast as my new MBP mid 2011. The other Adobe Apps don't run that good either - though I have to say I haven't had to work with them as much as with AE 5.5.
To name one thing that is really slow: Ram Preview, in the first place it takes ages per frame to render it, then mostly when it's done with rendering it is not played in realtime (more 1,2 fps ... in this range). So it's really not fun to work with this combination MBP + AE.
This can't be. The Macbook was 4x as expensive. And was build 3 years later. What's wrong with the Macbook?
    My Specs:
2,3 GHz MBP mid 2011, 4 GB Ram (going to be 8 GB soon), 750 GB HDD, Hi-Res 17" Matte, OS X 10.6.7
I already tried running Windows 7 on this Macbook it was so terrible that I was kinda frightend and really just wanted to bring it back to the shop. But maybe there is some way I can fix this?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Cheers!

The problem is OSX Lion not the specs of the hardware or CS5.x
If you can manage to revert the OS back to Snow Leopard ( which also can run 64bit software ), I bet your issues will be fixed.
And if you want to give Apples own Video-software a shot, then stay away from FinalCut X which has the same "quality" like the Lion..
Sorry, just saw that you have no Lion, I was redirected here from within Lions forum..

  • Photoshop CS6 PSDs into After Effects CS5.5

    Hi there,
Our graphics department have recently upgrade Photoshop to CS6 version 13.0 x64. I am trying to open a .psd file they have created in After Effects CS5.5 version 10.5.1.2. However I get the following message:
'After Effects error: could not open (.psd name) because it is not a valid Photoshop document. ( 51 :: 19 )'
Is there any way they can save their photoshop files differently so that they will open or do I need to upgrade to After Effects CS6?
Thanks in advance for the help.
(wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the photoshop forum - thought I would try here first though)

I've never encountered such an issue, and switch between both versions regularly.  On the machine I'm working on right now I have CS6 Creative Cloud installed, but do most of my AE work in CS5 or 5.5 because the clients I'm working for haven't upgarded yet.  But all my PSD work is done in CS6.
Is there anything unusual in the file, ie 3D content?  As Mylenium says, PS 3D has changed and is no longer supported by AE.  Otherwise, are you moving between platforms, ie Windows to Mac?  Does the file have a valid PSD extension?
